Gut bacteria are not symbionts [there to help us], they are
pathobionts. Necessary to promote HOST DEFENSE in our
gut lining by: activating your
-lymphocytes; antibodies; white blood cells
But, if go too far, turn on own body by autoimmunity action

Interaction bet. enteric microbiota & mucosal immune system
-constant, dynamic, intimate interaction among these players
and our gut lining--not a passive coexistence!
Mucosal immune system
-adaptive, renewing, repairing...
Microbiome is needed
-to maintain epithelial
barriers&
-mature defenses

The mucosal immune system consists of
-cellular component
-humoral immunity
-defense mechanisms
that prevent the invasion of microorganisms

These defense mechanisms can be
-physical barriers [epithelial lining, mucus, cilia function]
-chemical factors [pH, antimicrobial peptides]

Gut lining & bacteria [microbiome] should protect us by making
us ready for pathogens...
Disrupted by our actions: eat lots of probiotics; and
-plants; polyphenols; tannins; lectins; fiber..

This causes break in membrane integrity then bacteria
infiltrates into gaps in wall...
-creates inflamed response
Example: leaky gut:
-gap allows bacteria in
-response is inflammation
-antibodies created to kill
If ANTIBODIES IN EXCESS
or, If NO BACTERIA
-can kill pancreas; give T2D
-damage nerves;
-cause multiple sclerosis
