So, Upper half of CRP levels in HEALTHY PEOPLE
-4X risk of CVD!
How to lower CRP [C-Reactive Protein]?? statins
STUDY: 18k healthy people with no elevated cholesterol, but
had elevated CRP above mid range
RCT study [funded by pharma]
Looking for time to CVD or death
-STOPPED at 2 years because:
-lowered CRP, CVD & death
HOWEVER: deaths between
statin & placebo: 6 people!!
Not Clinically significant
4 years later published follow up:
"By the way, those receiving statins had 34% INCREASE in
diabetes RISK”
-this is NOT well KNOWN
-disconnect between lowering CRP, very little difference in
deaths, but increased diabetes
"Let's give them monoclonal antibody [IO1 beta cytokine]
[one step up from CRP] in CRT study…
-used different doses, long period of time, lots of people:
-Results: 20% decrease in coronary events
-but INCREASE RISK OF SEPSIS
-not allowing body to deal with infection
-this sepsis side-effect counter-balanced
the benefit of reduced CVD risk
Overall Neutral Effect of drug
