I made this painting live on Rumble during a difficult period which I had earlier in the year. It took quite a while but I am happy with how it came out. Sometimes when times are tough, we find ourselves in a position where all we can do is pray. Perhaps this painting is a representation of an angelic spirit of goodness who intervenes and answers prayers on our behalf? Whatever one's interpretation, I was in a place then where it felt appropriate for me to paint an angelic figure, and this was the result. Really happy with this one, let me know what you think. I made this piece during a low point of volatility in my personal life. One thing about my art practice is that it helps sustain me during turbulent times. It has always been that way throughout my life. That is one of the reasons why I will always continue with my art practice, because I know that I always take it with me wherever I go, and it will always be a way for me to express myself and work through things, and it stands as a sort of personal historical record of where I have been, how I have grown, what I have experienced, which I keep just for myself. An interesting thing about this painting is that I had made the sketch for it a number of years ago. I like to periodically go through my old notebooks and sketchbooks. I can get reinspired by something which was simple or pointless or even an afterthought at one time. But for whatever reason, sometimes we see things in a new light and they become appealing or significant to us again or in a way which they were not before. For whatever reason, I felt like painting this old sketch. This is one example of how the creative process is really not a linear thing, it is actually very nonlinear for me. This painting idea is really is just a silly play on words, but of course the heart as a symbol is quite rich and embedded with a lot of meaning. Perhaps it is just a reminder to always stay organized! Not just in your physical environment, but also emotionally, internally, physiologically, and however else! Here is another painting I made of a Madonna archetype sort of figure, in a somewhat mosaic style, during part 2 of the Rumble Creator Sponsorship program. Had a lot of fun playing with this style, I really love the idea of painting as if the painting is a mosaic. I drew it out first and then painted it live. This one looks particularly nice in person because of the metallic and iridescent paints that were used, it really glistens with the light at different angles that the camera has a hard time capturing. Part two of a 2-part series of mushroom-skull paintings I created live on Rumble. Both Skulls and Mushrooms are symbols which fascinate me so I combined them in these two paintings. In many ways they work together as skulls are often symbolic of death, and mushrooms necessarily grow from decay, preparing the ground for new life to begin. I believe in the value of certain mushrooms for healing purposes, and in the past they have caused powerful and positive life changing and creative experiences for me. This is a 16x12" acrylic and ink painting on a canvas board. This piece began by painting over a previous painting created years ago by myself; it was a portrait of a roommate from many years ago. That painting which no longer served me or fulfilled my aesthetic sensibilities will now lie entombed under this new artistic offering. This is another entry in a series of trippy drippy eyes which I like to create, symbolizing the fluidity of consciousness and reality which the artist is able to perceive and tap into at will. Painting over old paintings is important to me. Not only does this advance upon works which do not hold enough weight to me, but it also imbues new pieces with a hidden energy which lies below the surface, known only to the creator. Sometimes, this adds an important amount of Impasto to the painting above. I personally really enjoy painting on a canvas or object which already has marks applied to it, as opposed to a fresh canvas. It creates another creative dimension which subtly interacts with the process, and it can require more creative fluidity in order to work with this added dimension. Perhaps most importantly, it saves money and recycles important art materials, allowing for stronger pieces to come into creation. This original painting is an 18x24" acrylic and ink on canvas painting. To me, it is reminiscent of stained glass windows. Perhaps this crystalline, colorful landscape exists within the inner world of our consciousness. Stained glass was traditionally used in buildings and meant to initiate a mystical experience through its beauty and the way it captured the light. But do we need to seek outside for what exists naturally within? This painting involved a different, new process for me. It took me about a month to create it over a number of painting sessions. A sped up time-lapse displaying the process of a painting I made. For me, creating mandalas is like making an art prayer. It is also like taking a screenshot of the inside of my brain. I like making them because they make me feel focused and centered while I am creating them. They take a little longer to make than some of the other kinds of paintings I like to make because they are geometrical, but that can be a fun process to explore. Even though I measured things out and sketch the drawing out beforehand, I try not to focus on making it perfect though. I actually think things look better when they aren't perfect, it makes them feel more human to me. Usually my creative process is more spontaneous than this, so it is fun for me to do these kinds of paintings sometimes. That's what I've been doing recently, but things are always changing.
