Authorities have lifted the state of emergency on Rhodes, after catastrophic wildfires swept through the island for ten days. Land, trees and buildings are burned as far as the eye can see, the once scenic landscape is now charred and black. The fires were started by people, but a combination of strong wind, heat and overgrown woodland allowed them to rapidly spread to heavily populated areas.

‘You don’t think about how fast the fire is coming. It has burned everything. My restaurant, my house,’ said local resident Dimitris. ‘When I built this restaurant, I spent all my money here, you know? My money, my time – everything.’

Locals are starting the arduous task of rebuilding their lives after the fires. Many have had their homes or businesses completely destroyed, with thousands of people in shelters and temporary accommodations.
