Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll is the debut single by American hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult from their eponymous debut album Blue Öyster Cult released April 21, 1972. Despite not charting, it has become a staple in the band's live show. Its demo is credited with getting the band signed with Columbia Records. Lead vocals were performed by drummer Albert Bouchard. The lyrics describe the devastation of nuclear war with metaphors likening the destruction to rock and roll music. Don't Fear The Reaper is a song by American rock band Blue Öyster Cult from the 1976 album Agents of Fortune. The song, written and sung by lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser, deals with eternal love and the inevitability of death. Dharma wrote the song while picturing an early death for himself. Released as an edited single (omitting the slow building interlude in the original), the song is Blue Öyster Cult's highest chart success, reaching #7 in Cash Box and #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1976. Critical reception was positive and in December 2003 Don't Fear The Reaper was listed at number 405 on Rolling Stone's list of the top 500 songs of all time. In 1975, a poll of readers of the British magazine Melody Maker voted Secret Treaties the "Top Rock Album of All Time". In 2010, Rhapsody called it one of the all-time best "proto-metal" albums. It's the only BÖC album that does not feature a track with lead vocals sung by guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. The band also did not write any of the lyrics to the album, handing that duty to producer Sandy Pearlman, rock critic Richard Meltzer and singer Patti Smith.
