Going over the .223 Remington vs 5.56 MM rounds.
Original .223 Rem became 5.56 MM military ammo known as M193.
Both rounds ate the exact same size, both were designed at 53,000 PSI chamber tests and became 55,000 PSI rounds. Both were based off a 55 gr bullet or lighter.

Later FN in Belgium approved a NATO round as 5.56 NATO. This was a 62 gr bullet at 62,000 PSI and designated as SS109 and M855.

They say you can shoot .223 in a .223 chamber or a 5.56 Chamber.
They say you should NOT shoot a 5.56 in a .223 chamber., and only in a 5.56 chamber.

The chambers of .223 and 5.56 MM have different cuts. 5.56 chambers have a throat that is .125 inches longer and slightly different forcing cone angles. .223 Wylde chambers split the difference. The 5.56 chamber is made for reliability and and the .223 is made for accuracy.
