You not only need to let go of thoughts. You also need to let go of emotions, feeling, needs, wants, and attachments.
You need to let go of absolutely everything.
As soon as you do, you will be instantly home.
The character you are playing has emotions, feelings and thoughts. Not you.
Treat it as your enemy.
