FFW 27.1- System76 Teases New Pangolin Laptop

Been a while since I talked about System76, but it is high time for them to release a new AMD rig. Here are the basic specs:

· AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor
· AMD Radeon 680M graphics
· A 144Hz 15.6-inch FHD display
· Up to 32 GB DDR5 6400 MHz RAM
· Up to 16TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage
· 70 WH battery to give up to 10 hours of battery life
· Starting at $1300 for the basic spec

They state that we can expect the first ones to be available in February, so if you are in the market for a high performance, Linux-dedicated laptop, this could be a good fit for you.

FFW 27.2: Latest Proton-GE Release Out Now

Proton is Steam’s answer to the Linux compatibility problem for games in its library. They work furiously on it now, since the Steam Deck is runs SteamOS, which is based on Arch Linux. Proton-GE is the community fork of Proton, largely spearheaded by a gentleman who works for Fedora, who goes by GloriousEggroll online. The latest version is Proton-GE 7-44, and here’s what’s new:

· wine: updated to latest bleeding edge (includes alt+tab fix)
· wine-staging: rebased for latest proton-wine bleeding edge
· dxvk: updated to latest git (includes HDR patches)
· vkd3d-proton: updated to latest git (includes HDR patches)
· proton: import upstream changes (includes prefix sync revert/fix)
· protonfixes: add workaround for pentiment launch failure (thanks tgurr)
· protonfixes: add multiplayer fix for stronghold hd/stronghold crusader hd/ stronghold crusader extreme hd (thanks jopejoe1)
· protonfixes: add framerate fix for Battle Fantia Revised Edition (thanks ranplayer)
· protonfixes: add launcher workaround for Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (thanks ranplayer)

The article (link below) mentions that Proton-GE can often add more issues vs mainline Proton, as it is not tested as thoroughly as the mainline version is, but if you regularly play one of the above-mentioned games, then you will benefit from this one.

FFW 27.3: Bad Day for Steam...

LeakerWanderer apparently had an NDA with Steam back in the day, but has decided to leak a whole bunch of assets from the following games:

· Portal
· Counter Strike: Source
· Day of Defeat: Source
· Half Life 2: Episodes 1 & 2
· Half-Life 2 multiplayer
· Team Fortress 2

Valve got hit with a similar leak for a Left 4 Dead prototype a couple of months back. Come on, guys, I know we’d rather have everything be FOSS, but we need to respect the intellectual property of others by honoring NDAs that we sign. Be people of our word, not randomly leak stuff that doesn’t belong to us merely because we had a passing fancy that we were Robin Hood or some such mythical hero.
