What to Use Instead of Big Tech

FFW 12-1: System 76 Oryx Pro Refreshed
New hardware for this boss of a development and content creation workhorse, in the form of a new 4K OLED panel for the 15.6” model. The internals are the same as the previous refresh: a 12700H, RTX 3070 TI and 3080 TI GPU options at the top end. They also moved from DDR4 to DDR5 ram, up to 64 GB. Other than that, it is the same as before. These machines start at $2200, but as you configure it more specifically, that price can climb to nearly $5000 for the tippy top options. My Lord.

I would add that each of us needs to remember who has carried us through all of the tough times in the past. Who has always brought us through? God. It may have seemed like you were alone in it all, but you never were. As much as you have walked through, whether you have acknowledged His presence with you along the way or not, He has been with you. So when you doubt that you can make it through, reflect on what He has brought you through until now, meditate on His faithfulness and the fact that you would not be alive now, if He weren’t faithful.

FFW 27-2: Valve is Excited

Update on the official Steam Deck Dock: more supply problems, though it is being built by a different manufacturer than the Deck itself, but looking forward to annoincing something soon.

They are also excited about seeing SteamOS on more devices, and are working hard to get the installer ready to go so that other gaming handhelds can dualboot it with Windows. Pretty sweet for those Deck afficionados out there. I am impressed by what I have seen, but have never been that into handhelds, so different strokes for different folks, I guess. I am solidly behind the Deck, though for its ability to raise awareness and usage of Linux overall.

FFW 27-3: Star Labs Starfighter
This sounds like an epic machine, and will come with a 16” 4K, 10-bit, matte, IPS display that also can rotate 180 degrees, and can come with Intel 12th generation processors or up to an AMD 6800H processor, up to 64 GB of DDR5, and up to 8 TB of SSD storage. The only weakness I see, in terms of hardware, is a lack of DGPU options, at least as noted in this article. The price starts at $900 and ranges up to around $3000, so is potentially far more affordable than the Oryx Pro we talked about earlier.
