Sharpening kitchen knives is an essential skill for any aspiring cook. A sharp knife not only makes cutting and slicing easier, it also makes it safer. Dull knives require more force to use, leading to an increased risk of injury. With the proper tools in mind, sharpening kitchen knives is actually a fairly simple task.

Start by inspecting the blade of the knife. Dull knives will appear to not have much of an edge. Contrarily, a sharp knife will appear to almost have a “hollow” in the blade. From this point, the user should choose the right tool for the job. Sharpening stones are the most common tool, with varying sizes and minerals depending on the user’s needs.

Hold the sharpening stone in one hand and the knife in the other. Maintain a 20-degree angle between the blade and the stone and begin to gradually draw the blade across the stone in a forward and back motion. Work both
