South Canyon Fire Survivors

There is more to the story of the 1994 South Canyon Fire than the tragic deaths of 14 hero wildland firefighters.

On July 6, sudden high winds caused the fire to blowup, and race up Storm King Mountain, nearly catching a group of smoke jumpers on a steep, exposed hillside.

Today, two burned-out stumps mark the "good black" location where they deployed their fire shelters.

The Storm King Mountain Memorial Trail honors the 14 hotshots, smoke jumpers, and helitack crew who perished in the wildfire.
