poem text:
entering the airport—
which appears abandoned—
in a post-apocalyptic world
like Stephen King’s
The Langoliers.

meandering through the vacant
corridors,
passing empty gift shops
and closed restaurants
like a mall on the verge
of condemnation.

looking out
the long, glass windows
onto the tarmac,
at stationary planes
(like model replicas)
and
low hanging cumulus,
mimicking the
mountain formations
beneath them
as they scrape their bellies
across the mountaintops,
and pour their wet innards
upon those precipices.

crisscrossing steel vestibules
for cars
vanishing into gigantic
concrete corkscrews.

and the first signs of life
no life at all—
heads downcast,
necks stiffened,
eyes fixed on glaring screens
until the gate is called
and as one they rise,
put away their contraptions,
and shuffle forward
like poorly
synchronized swimmers
and
all of us
just wanderers
in the end
awaiting our
final destination.
