What makes cables different than dumbbells as tools and why might they be the GOAT?

pt1.

First noticing that dumbbells will always fall to the earth due to gravity helps us understand this question.

Since gravity has yet to turn off so far, it’s safe to assume for our exercise programming needs that in order to change the direction of the resistance during training we need to change the position of the body.

Why Change the direction of resistance when training?

To train a muscle is to exercise the ability of thats muscle to lengthen while keeping tension and structural stability without injury (some of you big wheels may need to reread that). Muscles pull from different angles so we can move in a 3d way. If they only pulled in the same line of force as gravity you’d be more then just dense as tree, you’d be tiff as one too. Unless, assuming you had joints, then you’d be quite the awkward looking tree too.

So since you’re not like a tree at all, in order to effectively train those multidirectional muscles of yours, you’re going to have to change your body position.

hen you look at the cable fly here compared to a dumbbell chest fly thats the most obvious difference between them.

But is there more difference to just changing the set up position?

Yes there is, but just that change in body posture will impact what sort of carry over effect the exercise has. Note that our postures will have their own demands to what muscles are engaged and how they are active during the time throughout the set.

Depending on your trainability the difference could be vital in reducing your exposure to injury. Unsupportable demands for core strength from a weak low backs can and will likely be compromised sooner than later.

But if this isn’t your problem it very well should be apart of your training progression to establish multidirectional stability as you grow stronger.
