Will we see a Star Wars movie again in the movie theater?
00:00 - Will we see a Star Wars movie again in the movie theater?
A huge slate of Disney+ releases suggests the franchise is retreating from the multiplex – but a Mandalorian movie may prove the theory wrong
00:16 - 1 - Film history:
Students of film history will be well aware that before 1977, and the release of Star Wars, the modern summer blockbuster was very much in its infancy. It could be argued that Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, released two years earlier, was the first film to really get those queues snaking round the block, but the first instalment in George Lucas’s long-running space opera triggered Hollywood’s love affair with mass same-day openings, high-octane marketing and the sense of a major movie “event” happening across the globe.
How strange, then, that there is no Star Wars movie currently in production and no real date for when we will next get to see the saga in multiplexes. Disney’s sequel trilogy and the associated nine-film “Skywalker Saga” is complete, and thanks to the fact that 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stank harder than a Tauntaun’s guts, there is no appetite whatsoever for spinoffs, prequels or sequels featuring recently introduced characters such as Daisy Ridley’s Rey, John Boyega’s Finn or Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron. People have even forgotten how cute they once thought BB-8 was. It is as if the entire thing has been quietly swept into the Sarlacc’s throat, never to be seen again (unless it is revived in desperation in a few decades’ time, a la Boba Fett.)
01:41 - 2 - Continued success:
Meanwhile, an entire universe of interlinked Star Wars TV shows is emerging on Disney+, thanks to the ongoing success of Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian. Suddenly nobody is all that interested in the legacy of the Lucas era – and if they are, it’s pretty easy to get your fill of Luke, Leia, Obi-Wan and Boba Fett when they turn up on the small screen. Even when these new Star Wars shows are not quite up to the standard of The Mandalorian – as with the nostalgic but disappointing Book of Boba Fett or the mercurial Obi-Wan Kenobi – the very fact that we get several-episode deep dive on each character means the disappointment will never be on the level of, say, the insipid Solo. And there’s always another Disney+ show just around the corner to whet the appetite, in any case.
Next up (next week) is Andor, which Disney revealed at D23 this weekend will run to at least 24 episodes across two seasons. Starring Diego Luna in the title role, the show begins five years before the events of the excellent Rogue One, and is created by the Bourne saga’s Tony Gilroy (who turned Rogue One around in a sort of high-end, hands-on executive producer role in 2016). Ahsoka, about the Jedi warrior Ahsoka Tano, will arrive in 2023, with Skeleton Crew, about a group of children lost in space following the events of Return of the Jedi, debuting the same year. We can also expect a third season of The Mandalorian in February.
03:54 - 3 - Beginning of life:
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has been saying for some time that all of the above could eventually build up to some kind of climactic event, a la Marvel’s The Avengers. And we know that The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal is keen to see the masked bounty hunter make it to the big screen. Could this be why we haven’t heard much in recent times about Rian Johnson’s mooted Star Wars film trilogy based in another corner of the galaxy, why Taika Waititi himself doesn’t seem to have a scoobie what his forthcoming big-screen effort will be about, and even why Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron has this week been officially removed from the Disney slate?
Disney and Lucasfilm have shown that they are in the business of wish fulfilment. Not so long ago, we all thought the idea of a Star Wars movie showing what happened to Luke Skywalker was a fabulous idea – in the end a vocal minority ended up hating Johnson’s The Last Jedi. A prequel based on the early life of Han Solo seemed like a shoo-in, but Alden Ehrenreich never quite nailed the role, and the studio did a terrible job of managing the production, switching directors halfway through the creative process.
Luckily, Kennedy et al are now in the fortunate position of knowing exactly what fans do want to see on the big screen, and it is most likely to be the continuing adventures of Din Djarin and Baby Yoda, AKA The Child, AKA Grogu. Favreau is an accomplished director, and there would be no need to dig any more dead Star Wars stalwarts out of retirement (though I wouldn’t have an issue with mo-cap Luke making another cameo). Ahsoka, Boba and Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan could all join forces with our heroes to take down a greater threat. Perhaps the film might even reveal the mystery of Yoda and Grogu’s home planet for the first time? Now that would be a reason to head back to the cinema. Apologies for borrowing a slogan from another long-running sci-fi saga, but I really wish Disney would make it so.

SUGAR PIE
00:00 - SUGAR PIE
00:14 - 1 - Her History:
Born Umpeylia Marsema Balinton of Filipino and African-American parentage, she was dubbed Little Miss Sugar Pie by the legendary Johnny Otis. He signed her to her first professional contract in 1954, after which she had her first hit record in 1959.
“I Want to Know” was recorded on the Veltone® label and produced by the Godfather of Oakland Blues, Bob Geddins, Sr.
It rose to Number 3 on the Billboard charts, spring boarding Ms. DeSanto into a lucrative contract with Chess Records®. At that time, Chess Records’ artists included Etta James, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and Bo Diddley.
During her tenure at Chess Records, she became the most prolific and highest paid writer in their employ.
Her songbook contains more than 100 compositions, which have been recorded by the likes of Minnie Riperton, Billy Stewart, Fontella Bass, The Whispers, Little Milton, The Dells, and Jesse James. Also while at Chess Records, Ms. DeSanto recorded two historic duets with Etta James, “In the Basement” and “Do I Make Myself Clear.” The latter song was featured in the 1999 movie, “The Hurricane.”
01:35 - 2 - Career Success:
For a two-year stretch, Ms. DeSanto opened for James Brown, pushing him to new heights with her white-hot, daring, dazzling, saucy stage presence. James Brown earned the moniker the hardest working man in show business legitimately; anybody who follows Ms. DeDanto has to work harder.
Ms. DeSanto’s career spans six decades, but she is still a vibrant, multifaceted performer. In the summer of 2008, she performed to capacity crowds at Yoshi’s Jazz & Supper Club, The Chicago Blues Festival, and the Poretta Soul Festival in Poretta, Italy.
“Best Blues Performer (Female) 1997?—Real Blues Magazine
“Legendary Artist/Songwriter 1998?—Blues/Soul Summit Conference
“Outstanding Blues Artist 1999?—Bammies Regional Award
“In Recognition of Artistry 2000?—Panama Awards
02:37 - 3 - About Sugar Pie:
Sugar Pie DeSanto has been called a great R&B singer. Her CDs, “Sugar Is Salty” (1993), “Classic Sugar Pie” (1997), and “A Slice of Pie” (1999), are on the Jasman Records label. Yet, Ms. DeSanto, born in Brooklyn, is far more than a great blues singer—, she’s also a first-class soul singer, a commanding jazz stylist, an uproarious comedienne, a show-stopping dancer, and an expert tunesmith.
She made more than 20 appearances at the Apollo Theater and appeared regularly at The Regal in Chicago and The Howard in Washington, DC. It was at the Apollo where she was spotted by “The Godfather of Soul,” James Brown, and became his dynamic opening act for the next two years.
03:30 - 4 - A Unique Sensation:
With the exception of “Hello, San Francisco, Part 1,” which was composed by legendary Oakland, California, blues producer, Bob Geddins, Sr., and “Keep It Like It Is,” written by blues great Jimmy McCracklin, all of the selections on the Jasman Records’ CDs were written in whole or in part by Ms. DeSanto.
She was the only female act on the bill with the American Folk Blues Festival that toured Europe in 1964. Other headliners included Willie Dixon, John Henry Barbee, Sleepy John Estes, Clifton James, Sunnyland Slim, Hubert Sumlin, Lightnin Hopkins, and the legendary Sonny Boy Williamson. This Lippmann and Rau Production was publicized as “featuring the best Blues Artists of America.”
04:20 - 5 - Her Songs:
The song “Hello, San Francisco” is the latest chapter in a prolific career that has taken Ms. DeSanto from her hometown to Chicago (where she wrote and recorded many classic slides for Checker) and back again. Her latest albums magnificently demonstrate that she is one of the most talented and versatile artists that has ever come out of the San Francisco Bay Area or anywhere else.
While Ms. DeSanto has made many memorable records over the years, such as “I Want to Know,” “Slippin’ Mules,” and “Soulful Dress,” it is her live performances that people particularly never forget. “Classic Sugar Pie,” released in 1997 (Jasman 10004), was recorded in New Orleans with arrangements by Wardell Quezergue.
Wardell Quezergue’s list of credits include work with Alan Touissant, Fats Domino, Wilson Pickett, and the Neville Brothers. We were more than pleased with the arrangements he gave us, which are groove to the bone.
05:22 - 6 - Contemporary Arrangements:
Except for “Never Say Die,” “Bread & Butter,” and “Don’t Worry about Me,” the other songs were recorded in the 1950s and 1960s. They’re presented here with contemporary arrangements that appeal to many fans. Although musical pundits might pigeonhole this CD as R&B, country and Western fans who listen closely to “Mama Didn’t Raise No Fool,” “Crazy Lovin”, and “I Don’t Want to Fuss” will enjoy them as much as Ms. DeSanto’s regular followers.

clothes made with spray
00:00 - clothes made with spray
00:07 - 1 - seamless fabric:
Spray-on technology demonstrated in London today creates a seamless fabric on contact with the body and may have applications in medicine as well as fashion
A Spanish fashion designer has developed the world's first spray-on clothing that can be worn, washed and worn again.
00:27 - 2 - spray consists of short fibers:
Manel Torres joined forces with scientists at Imperial College London to invent the spray, which forms a seamless fabric on contact with the body.
Torres took 15 minutes to spray a T-shirt onto a male model in a demonstration today, ahead of his spring/summer collection at the Science in Style fashion show in London next week.
The spray consists of short fibres that are mixed into a solvent, allowing it to be sprayed from a can or high-pressure spray gun. The fibres are mixed with polymers that bind them together to form a fabric. The texture of the fabric can be varied by using wool, linen or acrylic fibres.
The fabric, which dries when it meets the skin, is very cold when it is sprayed on, a limitation that may frustrate hopes for spray-on trousers and other garments.
"I really wanted to make a futuristic, seamless, quick and comfortable material," said Torres. "In my quest to produce this kind of fabric, I ended up returning to the principles of the earliest textiles such as felt, which were also produced by taking fibres and finding a way of binding them together without having to weave or stitch them."
Torres teamed up with chemical engineer Paul Luckham to set up a spin-out company called Fabrican Ltd, which will explore other applications ranging from spray-on bandages, hygiene wipes and upholstery for cars and furniture.
01:56 - 3 - spray fabric:
"The fashion application of spray-on fabric is a great way of advertising the concept, but we are also keen to work on new applications for the medical, transport and chemical industries," said Luckham. "For example, the spray-on fabric may be produced and kept in a sterilised can, which could be perfect for providing spray-on bandages without applying any pressure for soothing burnt skin, or delivering medicines directly to a wound."

Music legends who died early
00:00 - Music legends who died early
The untimely deaths of famous musicians at age 27 may be coincidence, but it is tragic coincidence. The mythology of the 27 Club gained prominence with the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994 since he died at the same age as iconic rock musicians, including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, when they died in the 1970s. The premature death of Amy Winehouse at age 27 in 2011, again renewed interest in the age's apparent curse. This is a list of some of the artists and musicians who died at the far too young age of 27.
The 27 Club
00:48 - 1 - Robert Johnson (1911-1938):
Born 100 years ago in rural Mississippi, the blues singer and guitarist Robert Johnson garnered little attention during his lifetime but was rediscovered in the 1960s, influencing numerous rock and roll pioneers. According to legend, Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his mighty talent, which he demonstrated on street corners throughout the Mississippi Delta and in the 29 songs he recorded between 1936 and 1937. Famously partial to women and whiskey, Johnson was allegedly poisoned by a lover’s jealous boyfriend or husband.
01:26 - 2 - Brian Jones (1942-1969):
A founding member of the Rolling Stones along with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Brian Jones developed a severe substance abuse problem that by the mid-1960s had taken a toll on his health, landed him in jail and alienated him from his bandmates. He was forced out of the group in June 1969. The following month, Jones was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool; police reported that he had drowned while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Recently, new evidence has suggested that foul play may have had a hand in his death at age 27.
02:08 - 3 - Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson (1943-1970):
Known as Blind Owl because of his poor vision, Alan Wilson (first on left) headed up the American blues band Canned Heat, which performed at Woodstock in 1969. A songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player, he famously re-taught the aging blues legend Son House, who had been living in obscurity for decades, how to play his own songs. Wilson, who struggled with mental illness and had previously attempted suicide, succumbed to a drug overdose in September 1970, becoming the first of three acclaimed musicians to die at age 27 that year.
02:50 - 4 - Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970):
Remembered as one of the greatest electric guitarists in history, Jimi Hendrix revolutionized rock and roll as both an artist and a producer during his brief four-year career. He died in London in September 1970, asphyxiating on his own vomit. His girlfriend claimed that Hendrix, a heavy drug user who was particularly fond of LSD, had washed down a handful of sleeping pills with red wine before going to bed.
03:23 - 5 - Janis Joplin (1943-1970):
Born in Texas, Janis Joplin won over the San Francisco music scene with her bluesy vocals and powerful stage presence, first as the lead singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company and later as a solo artist. Despite multiple attempts to get clean, she became increasingly addicted to heroin and alcohol as her career skyrocketed. She died of a heroin overdose in October 1970, less than three weeks after the death of fellow rock icon Jimi Hendrix.
03:59 - 6 - Jim Morrison (1943-1971):
A poet and avid reader of philosophy, Jim Morrison rose to prominence as the lead singer and lyricist of The Doors, a band he founded with a friend in 1965. By 1969, his drinking had become a problem, making him late for performances and fueling raucous onstage behavior. In July 1971, Morrison died of a heart attack apparently caused by a heroin overdose while living in Paris. It is thought that he mistook the drug for cocaine and snorted a fatal amount.
05:09 - 7 - Ron “Pigpen” McKernan (1945-1973):
A founding member of the Grateful Dead, Ron McKernan, who went by the nickname Pigpen, did not share his bandmates’ predilection for LSD and other psychedelic drugs. However, his heavy drinking caused him to develop cirrhosis in 1970, and by 1972 his health had become so fragile he could no longer tour. He died of an internal hemorrhage in March 1973.
05:10 - 8 - Pete Ham (1947-1975):
As lead vocalist of 1970s rock band Badfinger, Ham helped craft some of the group’s best-selling songs to date including “Baby Blue” and “No Matter What.” He also co-wrote “Without You”—a number one hit which would later be covered by Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carrey. Ham worked with the Beatles after the group signed to their Apple label. One of the band’s biggest singles was 1970’s “Come And Get It” with Paul McCartney. Ham died just days before he would have turned 28 on April 27, 1975
05:48 - 9 - Kurt Cobain (1967-1994):
An icon of the Seattle grunge scene, Kurt Cobain formed Nirvana with a friend in 1985; the band achieved mainstream success in the early 1990s. Under a glaring public spotlight, Cobain struggled with mental illness, chronic health problems and heroin addiction. He committed suicide in April 1994, leaving behind his wife, the musician Courtney Love, and their baby daughter.
06:20 - 10 - Amy Winehouse (1983-2011):
An English singer-songwriter whose powerful voice and unique style won her numerous awards and honors, Amy Winehouse battled drug and alcohol addiction for years. Her substance abuse problems were frequent tabloid fodder and inspired some of her songs, most notably the hit “Rehab.” On July 23, 2011, Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment, becoming the latest musician to have their career cut tragically short at age 27.

Greatest Gold Treasures Ever Found
00:00 - Greatest Gold Treasures Ever Found
Gold has been a coveted metal since ancient times. And one can see this in its popularity over the ages. Although fairly rare in ancient times, gold was used to manufacture coins owing to its rarity. A lot of these coins were stored together, which is why ancient gold coins are usually discovered in hoards.
Over the years, it is not just archaeologists across the world who have discovered gold; common people too have stumbled upon discoveries involving this precious metal. A number of treasures were discovered by people who were not even looking for anything valuable. Read on for an account of some of the most amazing gold treasures recovered from around the world that were once thought to be lost.
00:47 - 1 - The Hoxne Hoard:
In 1992, a farmer called Peter Whatling lost a hammer on his farm in England. When he asked his friend, who often looked for things using his metal detector, to help him find the lost hammer, they discovered 14,865 gold, silver, and bronze coins dating from Roman times. The entire hoard currently is valued at around $4.3 million. All the findings, along with Whatling’s recovered hammer, were donated to the British Museum.
01:22 - 2 - The Saddle Ridge Hoard:
Finding treasure in one’s backyard has always been a dream for a lot of people. In 2013, this dream came true for a couple living in California who stumbled upon a metal can containing a few gold coins while walking their dog. Subsequent digging and exploration with the help of a metal detector led to the discovery of seven other cans filled with gold coins. In all, 1,427 gold coins dating back to 1847-1894 were unearthed. The treasure was estimated to be worth $10 million. Who knew that walking your dog could prove to be so beneficial!
02:04 - 3 - The Ship of Gold:
SS Central America (also known as the Ship of Gold) was carrying 13,600 kilograms of gold when it sank in 1857. Although the site of the wreck was identified in 1988, only 5% of the shipwreck could be excavated. In 2014, Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc., an American company that engages in the salvage of deep-water shipwrecks, started exploring the site again. They recovered more than 15,500 gold and silver coins along with 45 gold bars from the shipwreck. The value of the entire horde is estimated to be between $100 million and $150 million.
02:52 - 4 - San Jose Galleon:
The sunken ship of San José, a galleon belonging to the Spanish Navy, was found by the Colombian Navy in 2015. The ship sank in 1708 and is said to have held gold, silver, and other precious jewels worth $1 billion today. Sea Search Armada (SSA), a group of investors from the US, claimed to have found the ship in 1981 and were willing to disclose its location if Colombia agreed to give SSA 35% of the treasure. However, the Colombian government soon announced that the SSA would be given only 5% of the total haul as finder’s fee. This battle between SSA and Colombia was resolved by the Colombian Supreme Court ruling of 2007. It gave SSA rights over 50% of the part considered as “treasure” and stated that SSA would not have rights over any part that is considered as cultural heritage of Colombia.
03:53 - 5 - Staffordshire Hoard:
The Staffordshire hoard is the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found. This treasure was found in 2009 by farmer Terry Herbert when he used a metal detector on a farm in Staffordshire. A total of 3,500 cloisonné garnets, 5 kilograms of gold, and 1.5 kilograms of silver were found as he embarked on a dig for the next five days. The reward for the findings was GBP 3.285 million, and it was split in half between the farmer and the owner of the land.
04:29 - 6 - Our Lady of Mercedes:
Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, a Spanish Navy frigate, was transporting gold and silver coins when it went down during the Battle of Cape Santa Maria in October 1804. The shipwreck was found by Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc. in 2007. Odyssey shipped their findings of almost 50,000 gold and silver coins to the US. However, the government of Spain claimed that since the frigate was a part of the Spanish Navy, they were the rightful owners of the gold. After a legal battle that went on for five years, the court finally ruled that the Spanish government was indeed the rightful owner and the gold has since then been shipped back to Spain.
05:15 - 7 - Caesarea Sunken Treasure:
In 2015, a group of divers discovered approximately 2,000 gold coins in the sea bed near the port of Caesarea, Israel. The divers notified the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) after their initial discovery. An expedition was organised with an IAA diving team in a bid to recover the whole treasure. However, the discovery has since been declared as property of the state and the unlucky divers got no finders’ fee.

00:00 - The Exciters
00:00 - The Exciters
00:13 - 1 - The Exciters Biography:
With their no-nonsense, street-smart approach, the Exciters ushered in the heyday of the girl group sound via the 1962 classic "Tell Him." Queens, NY, classmates Brenda Reid, Carol Johnson, Lillian Walker, and Sylvia Wilbur formed the group in 1961 when they were all 17 years old. Originally dubbed the Masterettes, they were the sister act to the Masters, a local doo wop quintet with the End Records single "A Man Is Not Supposed to Cry" to its credit. When the Masters secured a record deal with the Le Sage label, they wrangled session time for the Masterettes as well, and in early 1962 the group issued its debut effort, "Follow the Leader."
01:01 - 2 -First session:
Wilbur left the lineup soon after, and with replacement Penny Carter, the Masterettes auditioned for the famed writing/producing duo of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller -- Carter's tenure with the group proved brief, however, and following creative differences with his bandmates, Masters member Herb Rooney signed on with the Masterettes in time for their first session for United Artists. Galvanized by Reid's aggressive lead vocal, "Tell Him" -- credited to the Exciters, a moniker devised by Leiber & Stoller -- hit radio and retail in the fall of 1962, reaching the Top Five on the Billboard pop and R&B charts early the following year. Eschewing the demure puppy-love sensibilities of previous girl group records, "Tell Him" boasted an intensity that signified a sea change in the presentation and perception of femininity in popular music, paving the way for such tough, sexy acts as the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes.
01:58 - 3 - Unusual quality:
The Exciters resurfaced in the spring of 1963 with "He's Got the Power" -- though as potent (if not more so) than "Tell Him," the single sputtered to a halt at number 57 on the Billboard chart, portending the commercial frustrations that dogged the group despite the uncommon quality of its output. The third Exciters single, "Get Him," climbed only as high as number 76, two spots better than its follow-up, the Ellie Greenwich/Jeff Barry-penned "Do Wah Diddy" -- British Invasion combo Manfred Mann nevertheless heard the song and recorded their own cover version, scoring an international number one smash just months later. After one last United Artists release, "Havin' My Fun," in 1965 the Exciters signed with Roulette Records to remake Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' "I Want You to Be My Boy."
02:51 - 4 - Last success:
Early the following year, the group scored one last minor hit, a reading of the Jarmels' "A Little Bit of Soap," but its commercial heyday was over. The Exciters nevertheless continued recording throughout the decade for labels including Bang, Shout, and RCA Victor. Reid and Rooney, who had wed in 1964, continued leading the group long after Johnson and Walker broke ranks. After recording a handful of disco-era singles under the name Brenda & Herb, the couple finally eased into retirement. In the mid-'80s they separated, and while Rooney founded his own cosmetics firm, Reid launched a new Exciters with members of her family.

The 2022 World Cup Qatar
00:00 - The 2022 World Cup Qatar
JAKARTA - The most prestigious football competition in the world, the FIFA World Cup, will be held in the Middle East for the first time in history and Qatar is the host country of the competition. The Middle East's most iconic nation will host a month-long carnival with the tournament starting in the winter of 2022.
But, you know, there are many things that make the 2022 World Cup one of the most unique world cups in the history of football. Let's take a closer look at some of the most interesting facts about the 2022 World Cup that make it unique in every way. VOI tries to summarize it from various sources.
00:42 - 1. The first winter World Cup in the Northern Hemisphere:
Well, here are interesting facts about the World Cup in Qatar. This 2022 edition of the competition will be the first winter world cup in the Northern Hemisphere. Initially, the world cup usually took place in the summer in the southern hemisphere as this is the time in which the region experiences winter conditions.
However, things get tough when it comes to Qatar. Located in the Middle East, Qatar experiences extremely high temperatures that can reach up to 50 degrees celsius. Under such conditions, hosting any kind of world cup is almost impossible.
Therefore, to overcome the challenges posed by the weather in Qatar, the FIFA World Cup was moved from its usual summer slot to winter. This move, then, made it the first winter world cup in the Northern Hemisphere.
Interestingly, the 2022 World Cup will start on November 21, 2021 and end with the final scheduled for December 18, 2021.
01:48 - 2. The most expensive World Cup:
Another interesting fact about the upcoming 2022 world cup in Qatar is the amount the host country is spending in preparation for this event. As per estimates, Qatar spent 200 billion US dollars on infrastructure projects which include the construction of stadiums, roads, hotels and so on. This will make the Qatar World Cup one of the most expensive world cups in history.
02:17 - 3. Least number of stadiums to host the World Cup:
Another unique fact about the upcoming world cup in Qatar is the number of stadiums. Only eight stadiums are prepared by Qatar to host FIFA 2022 which is the lowest number of venues for a world cup in recent years.
In fact, of the eight venues selected to host the tournament, only one was completely renovated while the other seven were built from scratch.
Earlier in 1978, Argentina was the first country to host a FIFA World Cup with just six stadiums. Two stadiums less than Qatar.
02:55 - 4. Record number of visitors:
One of the most interesting facts about FIFA 2022 in Qatar is the number of visitors expected to arrive in the country during the event. As expected, the 2022 World Cup Qatar will probably receive a record number of visitors by the time the tournament ends.
The reason behind this is simple to understand. Being one of the best countries in the Middle East, Qatar is also located right in the center of the world and close to most of the countries in the world. Therefore, a record number of visitors is expected to come from all over the world when the 2022 World Cup kicks off.
It is interesting to note, Qatar Airways and Hamad International Airport will join hands to bring a record number of visitors to the country. It is estimated that there will be 1300 flights coming to Qatar every day for the whole month.
03:52 - 5. Easiest to move cities:
Another interesting fact about the Qatar World Cup is its commutability. As already discussed, the FIFA World Cup will attract a record number of visitors to Qatar. But what about moving within the country? Well, here's one thing. Qatar is a small country. In fact, it is much smaller than the host of the 2018 world cup, Russia.
Since the size of this country is very small, traveling from one place to another here is not a big problem. Host cities such as Doha, Lusail, Al Wakrah and Al Rayyan are located close to each other. Therefore, moving from one place to another will not be a big problem for travelers.
In fact, while local taxis like Karwa will help fans travel to different places, the Doha Metro will play a big role once the World Cup kicks off in the country. It is estimated that the metro line will carry around one million people during the Qatar World Cup.
As experts believed, the number might even be higher than before and would set a new record. Interestingly, the Doha Metro line connects all venues for the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Qatar's two most remote stadiums, Al Bayt and Al Wakrah are only 90 miles away.
05:15 - 6. Fan zone provides cheap alcohol:
Qatar has left no stone unturned in making the upcoming FIFA 2022 a huge success, and fan zones will be a big part of that. To date, there has been a lot of talk about the availability of alcohol in Qatar during the World Cup. However, while the stadium does not serve alcohol to fans, Qatar has certainly found a solution that might work.
There will be fan zones set up across the country that will serve alcohol at lower prices. This will be the overall concept in terms of the Qatar World Cup and fans will be able to enjoy live action right from the fan zone while getting cheap alcohol.
05:57 - 7. Stadium is equipped with Centralized Air Conditioning:
One of the most important things to note about the 2022 World Cup host nation is the fact that the temperature in Qatar during the day is very high.
While the World Cup is nearly impossible to hold during the summer given the fact that temperatures can touch 50 degrees celsius, switching to the winter slot has brought some peace. However, is the problem solved?
Well, as far as winter is concerned, even daytime temperatures during winter can be quite high. Therefore, Qatar has found a solution for this. For the first time, the country will host the World Cup in an air-conditioned stadium. All eight stadiums will be fully air-conditioned, providing fans with a comfortable viewing experience.
06:47 - 8. Bridging the cultural gap between Europe and the Middle East:
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will help bridge the cultural gap between Europe and the Middle East. This will be an opportunity to bring the two worlds together and help people have fun together.
In fact, Qatar put a tremendous effort into this and the results will be interesting to see after the World Cup takes place.
07:11 - 9. Second World Cup to be held in Asia:
Not only will Qatar be the first Middle Eastern country to host the 2022 World Cup, but it will also be the second time when the prestigious competition takes place in Asia. The first occurred in 2002 when Japan and South Korea co-hosted a FIFA event for the first time in Asia.
Therefore, FIFA 2022 will be a special event for Qatar as it will be the first Middle Eastern country to host the event.
07:42 - 10. Hospitality awaits fans:
Ever heard of Qatari Arab hospitality? Well, here's the thing, this country is very well known for its generous Arab hospitality and continues to impress travelers. Every hotel, public park or even a shopping mall in Qatar has been designed with comfort and convenience in mind.
As far as the 2022 World Cup is concerned, fans will receive generous hospitality once the tournament kicks off.

Titus Turner
00:00 - Titus Turner
00:12 - 1 -Success as a composer:
Titus Turner was an Atlanta-based R&B singer who had his greatest success as a songwriter. As a vocalist he had more than 60 singles released (and only one album), three of which became minor hits. Most of his pre-soul releases are well worth collecting.
00:35 - 2 - Beginning of life:
I was unable to find any information about Turner’s early life. His debut as a recording artist took place at the age of sixteen, on December 28, 1949, in Los Angeles. The resulting single, “Where Are You”/“I’m Just A Lucky So And So” (Aladdin 3053), was credited to "Mr. T and his Band". After a one-off single for the Regal label in 1951, Turner was signed by OKeh. On this label he had eight single releases during the years 1952-1954. His next stop was Wing Records, a Mercury subsidiary, where he debuted with his own composition “All Around the World”. It was covered by Little Willie John for his very first release (on the King label). This version went to # 5 on the R&B charts and a 1969 remake by Little Milton would also chart (# 13 R&B, # 73 pop), under the title “Grits Ain’t Groceries”. It was Turner’s first success as a songwriter. His second and third Wing single also wound up being the subject of a cover version. “Big John” (a rewrite of Little Walter’s “My Babe”) is probably better known in the version by Richard Berry ; the same goes for “Get On the Right Track Baby”, which was given a rockabilly treatment by Joe Clay. Ray Charles also recorded the song, in November 1956 (Atlantic 1143).
02:10 - 3 - More success:
The year 1956 brought Turner further chart success, again as a songwriter. “Hey Doll Baby” was a # 8 R&B hit for the Clovers. The song was later recorded by the Everly Brothers and included on their first LP. “Tell Me Why” was first recorded by the Crew Cuts, whose version peaked at # 45 in Billboard. On January 12, 1957 it was covered by Elvis Presley, but this track remained in the can until late 1965, when it was released as a single and reached # 33 (in early 1966).
An isolated single release on Atlantic (“Hungry Man”/“A-Knockin’ On My Baby’s Door”) in February 1957 was followed by a two-year stint with King Records. In April 1959 Titus finally scored his first chart entry as a singer. “Return of Stagolee” (King 5186), an answer record to “Stagger Lee”, made # 29 on the R&B charts. Also in 1959, Turner wrote “Leave My Kitten Alone” with Little Willie John, whose original version peaked at # 13 R&B and # 60 pop. When Johnny Preston recorded the song in late 1960, Little Willie John’s version was reissued with a different flip-side. Again the song reached # 60 (pop), while the Preston version went to # 73. In the UK, Preston was heard by the Beatles, who recorded “Leave My Kitten Alone” in August 1964, during the “Beatles For Sale” sessions, but their version was consigned to the vaults until 1995.
In 1959, star producer Henry Glover quit King Records after a long run of successes to form the Glover label in association with Old Town. He took Turner with him and released “We Told You Not To Marry” as the second single on Glover. This was another answer to a Lloyd Price hit, this time “I'm Gonna Get Married”. It gave Turner his first entry into the pop charts (# 83) and the single was also released in the UK, on London HLU 9024, in January 1960. For the follow-up, Glover had scheduled a catchy tune called “Let the Little Girl Dance”, but Turner - a vocalist of limited range - was having difficulty in getting an acceptable take and the song was subsequently recorded by Billy Bland (with Top 10 success), who happened to be present at the session. Also in 1960, Ray Charles recorded Turner’s composition “Sticks and Stones” (# 2 R&B, # 40 pop), which has seen many cover versions over the years.
04:59 -- 4 - Last entry on the charts:
Turner’s next stop was the Jamie label, for which he made several good recordings in 1960-61. The first of these was “Sound Off”, which gave him his last chart entry (# 77 pop). It was also the title of the only album he ever released (Jamie JLP 3018). Other Jamie singles include his own version of “Hey Doll Baby” and the original of “Shake the Hand Of A Fool”, which was also recorded by Johnny Hallyday in 1962 for his first US release. Gradually switching to soul music, Turner kept on recording prolifically during the 1960s, for a variety of labels, including Enjoy, Columbia, Atco and Josie. One of his Josie singles, “People Sure Act Funny (When They Get A Little Money)”, was successfully covered by Arthur Conley in 1968 (# 17 R&B, # 58 pop). During the 1970s he recorded only sporadically ; his last release came out in 1976. Titus Turner died in 1984, of unknown causes, aged 51.

Pit bull dog
00:00 - Pit bull dog
00:12 - 1 - fighting dog:
Also called American Pit Bull Terrier or Pit Bull Terrier, fighting dog developed in 19th-century England, Scotland, and Ireland from bulldog and terrier ancestry for hunting, specifically capturing and restraining semi-feral livestock. The name has been applied historically to several breeds of dogs—including the bull terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier—but it is not recognized as a distinct breed by the American Kennel Club. The United Kennel Club, however, first recognized the breed, which it calls the American Pit Bull Terrier, in 1898. The American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA)—whose primary focus is fostering the positive features of the American Pit Bull Terrier, such as its loyalty, dedication, and athleticism—also recognizes the breed.
Although these dogs were originally bred and trained to display aggression against other dogs, aggression against human beings was not encouraged because, even while fighting, the dogs had to be handled by their trainers. Dogs displaying this trait were not selected for breeding. However, the resurgence of dogfighting—illegal in the United States, Great Britain, and many other countries—led to irresponsible breeders encouraging such traits in their animals and mistreating them in order to induce a vicious temperament. Well-publicized attacks on people by dogs identified as pit bulls led to the passing of legislation in some jurisdictions banning or restricting the keeping of the breeds. Some humane societies routinely euthanize pit bulls that come into their possession, deeming them unsuitable for adoption. In response to the breed’s negative reputation, numerous pit bull owners and owner organizations (such as the ADBA) routinely condemn the breed’s mistreatment by irresponsible owners, arguing that any dog breed is capable of similar aggressive behaviour when trained improperly.
02:15 - 2 - Care and upkeep:
The breed is not well suited for dog parks. Although an individual pit bull may have a history of getting along with other dogs, that can change when it reaches maturity (about 18 months of age) or if challenged by another dog. In fact, pit bull experts advise that multi-dog families have a breaking stick to pry open dogs’ jaws in case fights ensue. Pit bulls need a fenced yard in which to exercise. Because of the breed’s athletic and tenacious nature, extra care should be taken to ensure that the fence is secure, with strong and tall sides that cannot be tunneled under. Time in the yard should be supplemented with leash walks, and a pit bull should wear a harness that limits the dog’s ability to pull the handler. Other recommended activities include games; agility, obedience, and scent work; coursing; flyball; and anything that engages both its mind and body. The breed excels at the sport of weight pulling. Pit bulls may or may not like swimming.
Coat care is minimal, consisting of occasional bathing and weekly brushing. Pit bulls do not like extreme cold nor heat.
The breed is susceptible to various bone diseases, notably canine hip dysplasia. Treatments include surgery and physical therapy. Other issues include thyroid and heart conditions.
03:44 - 3 - Temperament:
Pit bulls are controversial when it comes to temperament, in part because they can be dogs of extremes. For many, they are ideal companions: playful, willing to please, and moderately active. It is a fun, generally obedient type of dog that loves to play games, especially those that are challenging and physical. Pit bulls are also generally quiet in the house and not prolific barkers. It is a fair watchdog and protector. Although stubborn at times, the pit bull is a fast learner, capable of advanced obedience.
The majority of pit bulls lead peaceful lives. However, the pit bull was bred to be a tenacious fighter. According to some, this can lead to interactions and altercations with other dogs and sometimes people. Pit bulls and pit bull mixes are responsible for more human and canine fatalities and severe trauma than all other breeds and mixes combined. Many fatal attacks are carried out by household pets that for unknown reasons attack their owners or other pets. Although the pit bull appears no more likely (probably even less so) than many other breeds to bite, it is more likely to continue an attack. This, combined with its jaw and body strength, can result in disfigurement, dismemberment, or death to its victim. Proponents of pit bulls believe their behaviour depends on how they are raised. They note that pit bulls’ scores on temperament tests are similar to dog breeds considered friendly, such as golden retrievers. Although pit bulls that attack people are in the minority, their fatality record indicates that it is still a breed that should be handled with an understanding of potential aggression.
It should be noted that these claims are a traditional and widely accepted generalization about the breed, and the behaviour of individual pit bulls may differ.

Tiny Bradshaw
00:00 - Tiny Bradshaw
00:15 - 1 -First artist:
Myron “Tiny” Bradshaw was one of the first artists to move into rock ‘n’ roll from another musical field and also one of the oldest of the original members of the rock club, forty-two years old in 1947 with a twenty year career already behind him that took him from big band swing to mellow pop-jazz, recording only sporadically along the way with none of it finding much success.
00:42 - 2 - Rock train:
The advent of rock ‘n’ roll gave him another chance, one he seized with both hands. Unlike some elder statesmen at its outset Bradshaw wasn’t merely hopping on board the rock train as a lark or because it may prove commercially successful, he was fully convinced of its musical potency from the beginning. The bandleader’s infectious enthusiasm for the style propelled him to stardom in the early 1950’s on King Records, delivering some of the most tightly played celebratory songs of the idiom.
01:12 - 3 -Independent rock bands:
Scoring a half dozen hits along with a record in “The Train Kept A Rollin” that failed to chart but proved to be one of the first rock “standards”, Bradshaw oversaw one of the most rousing self-contained rock bands of the first decade, featuring a series of tenor sax stars, most notably Red Prysock, that helped to define his sound over the years. Bradshaw’s own somewhat eccentric vocals were hardly the epitome of skill but they too conveyed the party-time atmosphere his songs thrived on.
The band’s exuberant stage shows were their stock in trade and they were a touring giant until Bradshaw’s health deteriorated after a 1954 stroke. He died four years later, marking the passing of one of the original rock visionaries.

Queen Elizabeth Dies at Age 96
00:00 - Queen Elizabeth Dies at Age 96
00:05 - 1 - The queen:
Having led the United Kingdom as its monarch for more than 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland surrounded by her children and grandchildren on Thursday. The queen steadily shepherded her nation through times of peace and triumph, but also through periods of great trauma and turmoil since her coronation on June 2, 1953. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was 96.
Queen Elizabeth’s son Prince Charles is now king. Charles immediately ascended the throne, in accordance with the British line of succession.
A poll conducted in the United Kingdom in the spring of 2022 in recognition of her Platinum Jubilee found the queen had "sky high" public approval, with almost 9 in 10 Britons in favor of how she conducted her job.
A total of 15 prime ministers served during her reign, from Winston Churchill to Boris Johnson to Britain’s new prime minister Liz Truss, who met with the queen on Tuesday.
Elizabeth has often been praised for her calm and steadfast demeanor. Salma Shah, the Independent Voices columnist for the Express, praised the queen, saying, “Her wisdom is reassuring and comforting in dark times.”
01:22 - 2 - The beginning:
Elizabeth began her reign in the early 1950s with a six-month round-the-world tour of the Commonwealth (countries historically connected with the British Empire). She was the first ruling British monarch to visit Australia and New Zealand. In a later visit to those countries, she broke with tradition and instead of waving to admirers from a distance, she strolled among the crowds.
Elizabeth was also the first British monarch to visit South America and the Persian Gulf countries. In 1961 she made what was then the first royal British tour of India in 50 years.
In 1965, she became the first royal to visit Germany since 1913. Her 10-day trip to the country marked the 20th anniversary of the end of World War II and symbolized a reconciliation between two of Europe’s most powerful nations.
In 1986, Elizabeth became the first British ruler to visit the Chinese mainland. She toured the terra-cotta warriors in Xi’an, the Great Wall in Beijing, and other sites. When Elizabeth visited the Republic of Ireland in 2011, it had been 100 years since a monarch had set foot in the country, due to long-standing conflict between the Republic and Northern Ireland, which remains part of the United Kingdom.
She did have a few regrets during her long reign. In 1966, when an avalanche of mining waste in Aberfan, Wales, killed 144 people, most of them children sitting in their school classrooms, Elizabeth did not immediately visit the beleaguered area, thinking she would be a distraction. Instead, she sent her husband Prince Philip to survey the damage and meet survivors. Eight days later, she came to the Welsh community and was greatly moved by the tragedy. She called her decision not to visit immediately “her biggest regret.”
During her extensive service, Elizabeth saw the decentralization of government power, whereby greater authority was granted to the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly. Through the late 1950s into the 1970s, Great Britain decolonized many of its territories in Africa. In 1997, Hong Kong was handed back to the People’s Republic of China.
Elizabeth reigned both when Britain joined the European Union in 1973 and when it left with Brexit in 2020.
From the Cold War to the fight in Afghanistan after 9/11, the U.S. and Britain have, as the queen said, stood together for freedom around the world.
04:09 - 3 - Personal Crossings:
In the latter half of the 20th century, the monarchy was seen as increasingly irrelevant. In an attempt to humanize the royal family, a documentary was made in 1969 intended to show their private, everyday life. The special gained a global audience of 40 million, but Elizabeth later banned future showings of the film, believing it revealed too much.
The queen weathered her share of family scandal as well. She called 1992 the “annus horribilis.” Prince Charles and his wife Diana, Princess of Wales, separated that year, and so did Prince Andrew and his wife, Sarah, Duchess of York. When Diana died in a car crash in 1997, Elizabeth drew criticism for at first refusing to fly the flag at half staff at Buckingham Palace. In time, she changed course and presented a televised address to a country in mourning.
The queen's son Prince Andrew has also cast a shadow on the monarchy. He reportedly had close ties to the American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was charged with child sex trafficking, and Andrew was the subject of a sexual abuse lawsuit.
The queen is survived by her four children, whom she had with the late Prince Philip: Prince Charles (73), Princess Anne (72), Prince Andrew (62), and Prince Edward (58), as well as eight grandchildren. Prince Charles will now assume the throne and become King of England.
Elizabeth led a long and relatively healthy life until her latter years, when she suffered mobility issues and a diagnosis of COVID-19.
Her leadership and positive outlook toward her life and people will remain her enduring legacy.
06:01 - 4 - Remarkable phrase of the monarch:
"Each day is a new beginning,” Elizabeth once said. “I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God.”

Ship in the Colorado desert
00:00 - Ship in the Colorado desert
It sounds implausible, right? There's no way a historic ship is buried beneath the California desert.
And yet the legend about a long-lost vessel has persisted for centuries. Theories range from a Spanish galleon to a Viking knarr — and everything in between.
Look back at historical accounts, and you'll find little proof.
But those who believe in its existence point to the way water once covered this arid landscape. Mother Nature leaves open the possibility of a nautical mystery, they argue.
00:36 - 1 - Here's what we actually know:
Magazines, newspapers and books across the world have long perpetuated the idea that a ship is buried beneath the desert floor. In 1870, Philadelphia’s Evening Telegraph called it “a marvellous story” about “a ship high and dry on a Colorado Desert – billows of sand beating about her.” In 1875, British publishing house Chapman and Hall released poet Joaquin Miller’s book of verse The Ship in the Desert.
01:04 - 2. There are documented 'sightings':
There are reports of sightings around the Salton Sea and Imperial Valley, extending as far south as Mexico’s Baja peninsula, though firsthand accounts are rare. In 1870, for example, explorer Albert S. Evans was traveling to San Bernardino, Calif., when he claimed to have stumbled on its remains. “The moon threw a track of shimmering light” upon “the wreck of a gallant ship,” Evans wrote in The Galaxy magazine in 1870, “which might have gone down there centuries ago when the bold Spanish adventurers … were pushing their way to the northwest.”
01:41 - 3. It's 'not uncommon' for shipwrecks to last 500 years:
Pearce Paul Creasman, an associate professor in the University of Arizona's Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research, says wood can survive for an "amazingly" long time in certain parts of the desert, depending on environmental conditions.
While the type of wood can be a determining factor, ships are expected to be "critter-resistant" to marine worms or termites, Creasman says. It's "not uncommon" for entire vessels to last 500 years – in Egypt, buried ships dating back to around 2700 B.C. still exist in good condition, he adds.
But if an area is prone to wet and dry cycles, such as rain, floods or a river that rises and falls, Creasman cautions, the opportunity for preservation is "considerably reduced."
02:31 - 4. One man wanted a permit to dig:
In the early 1970s, Lawrence Justus sought permission to enter Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs, Calif., for “the purpose of locating certain artifacts,” according to documents obtained by The Desert Sun.
His attorney first contacted the California Department of Parks and Recreation in 1974 and then two years later with a proposal to enter an agreement with Justus and the Imperial Valley College Museum in El Centro, Calif., to secure an antiquities permit, after which he'd be able to keep "all gold, silver and rare stones."
The state answered back with a resounding no.
But included in California State Parks' files is an old, black-and-white photo of Justus, wearing dark sunglasses, from an unidentified publication.
It reads, "One of the last photos of Larry Justus, who reportedly found the Lost Ship of the Desert."
It's still a mystery if he actually did.
03:31 - 5. Most scholars are skeptical:
To naysayers, it’s simply a myth passed down through oral and literary tradition.
The furthest documented voyage by a Spanish ship throughout the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries happened in 1540, says Don Laylander, a senior archaeologist with the cultural resources firm ASM Affiliates, who has published numerous studies on the region. That's when Hernando de Alarcón sailed up the western coast of Mexico, traversed the head of the Gulf and then navigated the lower Colorado River, making it at least to modern-day Yuma, Ariz. – abut 100 miles southeast of the Salton Sea.

JULIA LEE
00:00 - JULIA LEE
00:14 - 1 - Queen of the blues:
Singer / pianist Julia Lee is the undisputed Queen of Risqué blues and R&B. She was born in the small town Boonville in Missouri, but grew up amidst the rousing Kansas City music scene of the Roaring Twenties. Lee began to play piano professionally at the Novelty Club in Kansas City in 1918. From 1920 on, her career was linked for fourteen years with that of her brother, saxophonist George E. Lee (1896-1959). Julia made her first record in 1927 ("Down Home Syncopated Blues"/"Meritt Stomp"), for the local Meritt label, with George Lee and His Novelty Singing Orchestra, followed by two singles for Brunswick in 1929. After her brother's band was scaled back to a small combo in 1934, she was hired as a soloist at Milton's Tap Room in Kansas City, which remained her base until 1948. Although consistently active as a performer, she did not record again until 1944.
01:21 - 2 - His solo career:
A four-track Capitol session by Jay McShann and his Kansas City Stompers on November 1, 1944 featured Lee as vocalist on two of the four tracks. The popularity of the resulting single ("Come On Over To My House"/"Trouble In Mind") led to her solo recording career, which started on Mercury in 1946. There were fifteen Capitol sessions between 1946 and 1952, usually in Los Angeles, but also some in Kansas City, and all of them credited to Julia Lee and her Boy Friends. Her sidemen included Dave Cavanaugh on tenor sax, Benny Carter on alto sax, Vic Dickenson on trombone, Jack Marshall on guitar, Red Callender on bass and Sam 'Baby' Lovett on drums. Lee always accompanied herself on piano.
02:14 - 3 - Success:
The first Capitol solo session, on August 23, 1946, brought Julia immediate chart succes, with "Gotta Gimme Whatcha Got" (# 3 R&B), a boogie with an undeniable rock 'n' roll rhythm. Merrill Moore would revive the song in 1955, also on Capitol. This was the beginning of popular success for a 44- year old woman whose vocal freshness and musical dynamism helped her to hide her age and appear as a much younger vocalist. From November 1947 until February 1948 Lee topped the R&B charts (for 12 weeks) with "Snatch And Grab It", which she followed up with "King Size Papa" in March 1948. This became another number one (for nine weeks) and even crossed over to the pop charts (peaking at # 18), in spite of the lyrics, which are more than a little suggestive! There was further pop success with another double entendre song, "I Didn't Like It the First Time (The Spinach Song)", which went to # 4 R&B and # 29 pop in the spring of 1949. The last of her ten R&B hits was "You Ain't Got It No More" (# 9, late 1949), criticizing her partner's performance in bed. My personal Julia Lee favourite. (Dig the way she sings "so long" at 1:52.)
03:41 - 4 - Refused to tour:
In 1948 she appeared at a White House gala in front of President Truman, with her long-time musical partner Sam 'Baby' Lovett. Though she fulfilled several club engagements, she refused to tour. After leaving Capitol in 1952, Julia only recorded four further songs (for the Damon and Fourmost labels), but she was active up until her death (from a heart attack) in December 1958.
Her records have stood the test of time quite well. Julia Lee had a clear, rich, relaxed voice and both her singing and piano playing were based on solid boogie rhythms. Like that of Louis Jordan, Julia's music belongs to an era when musicians could create a beat merely by tapping their foot and did not feel obliged to hammer it out.

The Taj Mahal Story
00:00 - The Taj Mahal Story
00:04 - 1 - A legend:
Who could ever think that an eternal love leading to the saga of infinite bondage can evolve out of a desert like land and would blossom to be the reason to gift our world a poem-in-marble, The Taj!
No image of The Taj, neither on canvass nor on celluloid, can adequately express its conceptual imaginary nor convey the legend, the poetry and the romance that shrouds what Rabindranath Tagore calls "a teardrop on the cheek of time".
The Taj Mahal, a spectacle in white marble, unparalleled in grandeur that depicts the sheer opulence of an era. The awesome structure, the monument of love that Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan gave to the world, stands as a testimony of his intense love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
It is a romance celebrated in marble and glorified with precious and semi-precious stones and that’s the way to appreciate it!
Uttar Pradesh, the Land of The Taj is rich in its cultural heritage and has always been a prominent arena of politics since the ancient times. Agra, the City of The Taj and once the capital of the Mughal Empire during the 16th through the early 18th centuries, enjoys a close proximity to the National Capital City of New Delhi.
Tourists from all over the world visit Agra to make a pilgrimage to Taj Mahal, India’s most famous architectural wonder, in a land where magnificent temples and edifices abound to remind visitors about the rich civilization of a country that is slowly but surely lifting itself into an industrialized society as well.
Taj Mahal means "Crown Palace" and is in fact the most well preserved and architecturally beautiful tomb in the world. The English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold has described The Taj as "Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones."
It is a romance celebrated in marble and glorified with precious and semi-precious stones and that’s the way to appreciate it!.
01:58 - 2 - Your location:
Taj Mahal stands on the bank of River Yamuna, which otherwise serves as a wide most defending the Great Red Fort of Agra, the center of the Mughal emperors until they moved their capital to Delhi in 1637. It was built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in 1631 in memory of his third but the most favourite wife, in fact a soul-mate Mumtaz Mahal, a Muslim Persian princess. She died while accompanying her husband in Burhanpur in a campaign to crush a rebellion after giving birth to their 13th child. The death so crushed the emperor that all his hair and beard were said to have grown snow white in a few months.
When Mumtaz Mahal was still alive, she extracted four promises from the emperor: first, that he build the Taj; second, that he should marry again; third, that he be kind to their children; and fourth, that he visit the tomb on her death anniversary. However, due to ill health and being under house arrest by his own son and successor to the throne, Aurangzeb, barred him from continue to keep the last promise.
The Taj rises on a high red sandstone base topped by a huge white marble terrace on which rests the famous dome flanked by four tapering minarets. Within the dome lies the jewel-inlaid cenotaph of the queen. So exquisite is the workmanship that the Taj has been described as "having been designed by giants and finished by jewellers". The only asymmetrical object in the Taj is the casket of the emperor which was built beside the queen’s as an afterthought.
Legend has it that during his eight years long ailment and imprisonment, Shah Jahan used to intensly view The Taj lying on the bed through a diamond fixed in the wall in front at a particular angle. WOW!!!
03:43 - 3 - Love story:
As a tribute to a woman of exotic beauty and as a monument of a love story, which is keeping us engrossed even when we are reading through these pages here, truely an ever-lasting romance of a love not ended as yet, the Taj reveals its subtleties to its beholder!
The rectangular base of Taj is in itself symbolic of the different sides from which to view a beautiful woman. The main gate is like a veil to a woman’s face which should be lifted delicately, gently and without haste on the wedding night. In Indian tradition the veil is lifted gently to reveal the beauty of the bride. As one stands inside the main gate of Taj, his eyes are directed to an arch which frames the Taj.
The dome is made of white marble, but the tomb is set against the plain across the river and it is this background that works its magic of colours that, through their reflection, change the view of the Taj. The colours change at different hours of the day and during different seasons.
The Taj sparkles like a jewel in moonlight when the semi-precious stones inlaid into the white marble on the main mausoleum catch and reflect back its glow with a better gleam. The Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines. These changes, they say, depict the different moods of a beauty of any kind.
Different people have different views of the Taj but it would be enough to say that the Taj has a life of its own that leaps out of marble. A masterpiece of the art and science of architecture, a representative of an era called The Mughal Period surpassing any authority to add or de-add anything in any sense in or out of the Taj!
The Taj Mahal stands tall with grace is not just a parable epitome of emotional & eternal love between a man and a woman but for other reasons too _
Emperor Shah Jahan, who commissioned the construction of ‘The Taj’, desired to create it also as a symbol of solemnity, harmony, purity and spirituality as well.
The Taj is not merely a monument of grace and dignity alone. It is, in fact, a message to all mankind that “Pure love is the soul of life”.
The Taj is a reminder for all mankind about the universally accepted but not so well practiced concept of ‘Love & Peace’, the essence of the paradise, free from conflicts of races and geographical boundaries is important to be observed solemnly.
06:03 - 4 - Exotic beauty:
The Taj is simply a majestic tribute to an exotic beauty!
The saga of The Taj would be half told if the myths related to it are not mentioned. Like many a great buildings the Taj Mahal has its myths and legends. It seems that there is more fiction on the Taj than serious scholarly research. Several of the stories belong solely to oral tradition and are told by the guides, some are so established that they form a popular history of the monument and have made their way into guidebooks, and some have been taken up by scholars, or even created by them, and thus become part of the scholarly debate.
06:41 - 5 - Facts:
To the last category belong the oldest tales of the Taj. Here the most widely known is the story of the second Taj, the 'Black Taj', which Shah Jahan intended to build in black marble opposite the present mausoleum, on the site of the Mahtab Bagh. It goes back to Jean-Baptiste Tavernier who, when at Agra in 1665 AD, reported that 'Shahjahan began to built his own tomb on the other side of the river, but the war with his sons interrupted his plan, and Aurangzeb, who reigns at present, is not disposed to complete it. Shah Jahan was put under house arrest by his own son and successor by force, Aurangzeb. The latter did not agree with his father on most issues and was particularly opposed to him building a black Taj as his own mausoleum.
Upon Shah Jahan's death, Aurangzeb made the body of the Emperor, who got the body of his beloved Mumtaz in a golden casket from Burhanpur to Agra, carried in a boat by only two men and buried him in the Taj, next to his wife in probably the simplest manner.
Shah Jahan, the Emperor, who fulfilled the wishes of his beloved, could not find fulfilment of his own wish to build a Black Taj to express his mourning for the beloved Queen Mumtaz Mahal even after his death. That was the serenity in the purity of love.
Legend has it that during his eight years long ailment and imprisonment, Shah Jahan used to intensly view The Taj lying on the bed through a diamond fixed in the wall in front at a particular angle, WOW!!!
As a tribute to a woman of exotic beauty and as a monument of a love story, which is keeping us engrossed even when we are reading through these pages here, truely an ever-lasting romance of a love not ended as yet, the Taj reveals its subtleties to its Beholder! Come!! Be Thy One!!!

Ivory joe Hunter
00:00 - Ivory joe Hunter
00:14 - 1 - Ivory Joe Hunter Biography:
Bespectacled and velvet-smooth in the vocal department, pianist Ivory Joe Hunter appeared too much mild-mannered to be a rock & roller. But when the rebellious music first crashed the American consciousness in the mid-'50s, there was Ivory Joe, deftly delivering his blues ballad "Since I Met You Baby" right alongside the wildest pioneers of the era.
00:40 - 2 - Success:
Hunter was already a grizzled R&B vet by that time who had first heard his voice on a 1933 Library of Congress cylinder recording made in Texas (where he grew up). An accomplished tunesmith, he played around the Gulf Coast region, hosting his own radio program for a time in Beaumont before migrating to California in 1942. It was a wise move since Hunter -- whose real name was Ivory Joe, incidentally (perhaps his folks were psychic!) -- found plenty of work pounding out blues and ballads in wartime California. He started his own label, Ivory Records, to press up his "Blues at Sunrise" (with Johnny Moore's Three Blazers backing him), and it became a national hit when leased to Leon Rene's Exclusive imprint in 1945. Another Hunter enterprise, Pacific Records, hosted a major hit in 1948 when the pianist's "Pretty Mama Blues" topped the R&B charts for three weeks.
At whatever logo Hunter paused from the mid-'40s through the late '50s, his platters sold like hot cakes. For Cincinnati-based King in 1948-1949, he hit with "Don't Fall in Love with Me," "What Did You Do to Me," "Waiting in Vain," and "Guess Who." At MGM, then new to the record biz, he cut his immortal "I Almost Lost My Mind" (another R&B chart-topper in 1950), "I Need You So" (later covered by Elvis), and "It's a Sin." Signing with Atlantic in 1954, he hit big with "Since I Met You Baby" in 1956 and the two-sided smash "Empty Arms"/"Love's a Hurting Game" in 1957.
02:24 - 4 - End of career:
Hunter's fondness for country music reared its head in 1958. Upon switching to Dot Records, he scored his last pop hit with a cover of Bill Anderson's "City Lights." Hunter's Dot encores went nowhere; neither did typically mellow outings for Vee-Jay, Smash, Capitol, and Veep. Epic went so far as to recruit a simmering Memphis band (including organist Isaac Hayes, trumpeter Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, and saxist Charles Chalmers) for an LP titled The Return of Ivory Joe Hunter that he hoped would revitalize his career, but it wasn't meant to be. The album's cover photo -- a closeup of Hunter's grinning face with a cigarette dangling from his lips -- seems grimly ironic in the face of his death from lung cancer only a few years later.

Roy Milton
00:00 - Roy Milton
00:15 - 1 - Biography of Roy Milton:
As in-the-pocket drummer of his own jump blues combo, the Solid Senders, Roy Milton was in a perfect position to drive his outfit just as hard or soft as he so desired. With his stellar sense of swing, Milton did just that; his steady backbeat on his 1946 single for Art Rupe's fledgling Juke Box imprint, "R.M. Blues," helped steer it to the uppermost reaches of the R&B charts (his assured vocal didn't hurt either).
00:44 - 2 - Life:
Milton spent his early years on an Indian reservation in Oklahoma (his maternal grandmother was a Native American) before moving to Tulsa. He sang with Ernie Fields's territory band during the late '20s and began doubling on drums when the band's regular trapsman got arrested one fateful evening. In the mood to leave Fields in 1933, Milton wandered west to Los Angeles and formed the Solid Senders. 1945 was a big year for him -- along with signing with Juke Box (soon to be renamed Specialty), the band filmed three soundies with singer June Richmond.
01:21 - 3 - Success:
"R.M. Blues" was such a huge seller that it established Specialty as a viable concern for the long haul. Rupe knew a good thing when he saw it, recording Milton early and often through 1953. He was rewarded with 19 Top Ten R&B hits by the Solid Senders, including "Milton's Boogie," "True Blues," "Hop, Skip and Jump," "Information Blues," "Oh Babe" (a torrid cover of Louis Prima's jivey jump), and "Best Wishes." Milton's resident boogie piano specialist, Camille Howard, also sang on several Milton platters, including the 1947 hit "Thrill Me," concurrently building a solo career on Specialty.
After amassing a voluminous catalog as one of Specialty's early bedrocks, Milton moved on to Dootone, King (there he cut the delectable instrumental "Succotash"), and Warwick (where he eked out a minor R&B hit in 1961, "Red Light") with notably less commercial success. Sadly, even though he helped pioneer the postwar R&B medium, rock & roll had rendered Milton an anachronism.
02:28 - 4 - End of career:
The drummer remained active nonetheless, thrilling the throng at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival as part of Johnny Otis's all-star troupe. It's a safe bet he was swinging until the very end.

Walt Disney's first drawing was Lucky Rabbit Oswald:
00:00 - Walt Disney's first drawing was Lucky Rabbit Oswald:
00:06 - 1 - Walt Disney:
Donald, Goofy, Pluto, and… Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. That’s how the list of major Disney animated characters might read had certain events in the late 1920s unfolded differently, forever altering the history of animated film.
In 1923, Walt Disney headed for California with the hopes of getting into the movie business. He had had initial success in Kansas City, Missouri, making animated shorts for a local ad agency and later for his own “Laugh-O-Gram” studios. Fatefully, Disney accepted an $11,000 contract with Pictorial Clubs Inc. to produce six shorts. The company went bankrupt before fully paying Disney, forcing him out of business.
At the time, New York City was still the capital of animation, home to the studios that produced popular animation like the Felix the Cat and Krazy Kat series. Undeterred, Disney opted for California, as his brother Roy was already there convalescing from a bout of tuberculosis. In mid-1923, with a reported $40 in his pocket, Disney left for Hollywood.
Prior to leaving, Disney made one last short, Alice’s Wonderland (1923). Alice was inspired by Max Fleischer’s Out of the Inkwell series, featuring an animated Koko the Clown cavorting in a live-action world. Disney’s Alice cleverly switched that premise, putting a live-action girl in an animated world.
Margaret Winkler, distributor of the Felix the Cat series, saw Alice’s Wonderland and approached Disney to produce more. He had to scramble. He had no staff, and Winkler wanted the same child actress, Virginia Davis, to play Alice. Always persuasive, Disney convinced Davis’s family as well as animators Hugh Harman, Rudolph Ising, and Ub Iwerks to leave Kansas City for California.
The Alice series was popular with critics and audiences alike, but by 1927 the novelty of a live-action girl in a cartoon world had worn off. Smartly, Disney shifted focus from Alice to the cartoon characters, notably her sidekick Julius the Cat. Concurrently, Winkler’s new husband Charles Mintz had taken over her business, and Universal Pictures tapped him to get them back in the animation business. Universal, feeling there were already enough cartoon cats, suggested a series starring a rabbit.
02:34 - 2 - start
Disney and his best animator Ub Iwerks reworked Alice’s Julius into a rabbit named Oswald for Poor Papa (1927). After Universal executives complained that Oswald looked “too old,” Iwerks redesigned him to look younger for the second short, Trolley Troubles (1927). It became the first of 26 Oswald shorts created by Disney’s studio for producer Mintz and distributor Universal.
Disney was an expert storyteller and instinctively knew the shorts would be more successful if Oswald was more than a bystander. Instead, the humor arose from situations created for Oswald’s world and his reactions to them. The quality of the animation was also superior to the work of other studios, mostly because of Iwerks’s technical expertise and his skill at drawing perspective.
Disney and Iwerks developed an assembly-line system that met Disney’s desire for top-quality animation, story, and character development as well as allowing them to churn out one film every two weeks, as mandated by their contract with Mintz and Universal. Through Oswald, Disney also realized the potential for character merchandising. From the outset, Universal had promoted Oswald “tie-in” products, the first being an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit chocolate bar that hit the shelves in 1927.
Merchandise tie-ins, of course, were lucrative only to copyright holders. By early 1928, with Oswald on a roll, Disney felt confident enough to travel to New York to request an increase from $2,250 to $2,500 per short. Before he left, Iwerks alerted him that Mintz was signing Disney’s animators to new contracts, replacing Disney as their boss. Disney didn’t believe it until he arrived in New York, where Mintz offered $500 less per short, plus 50 percent of any profits. Mintz offered Disney, who thought of himself as Oswald’s owner, a contract to join Mintz’s firm as an employee. Disney learned that Universal controlled the copyright to Oswald and all profits from the character, regardless of who made the films. Feeling betrayed, Disney turned down Mintz’s offer and vowed never again to relinquish control of any of his studio’s creations. Before leaving New York, Disney wired his brother Roy to sign Iwerks, his best animator—and one of the few who refused to sign with Mintz—to an exclusive contract.
Iwerks’s contribution to Disney’s success is immeasurable. Long before Oswald, Disney had stopped drawing to concentrate on running the studio. Iwerks created the images of Oswald and Mickey Mouse and drew most of the first Mickey cartoons. Years later a story circulated that Disney was asked at a party to draw Mickey, and he handed the paper to Iwerks. In the 1930s, Iwerks started his own studio, producing shorts for Columbia Pictures and Warner Bros.’ Looney Tunes series. Iwerks returned to Disney in 1940.
Iwerks later concentrated mostly on visual effects, developing an improved process for combining live action with animation first used in The Three Caballeros (1944) and the xerographic process pioneered in 101 Dalmatians (1961). He won two Academy Awards for his technical work and received a nomination for the bird effects in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963). He also helped develop many of Disneyland’s animatronic attractions.
06:09 - 3 - Creation of Mikey:
Back in Hollywood, while the rest of the staff finished Oswald shorts for the Universal contract, Disney and Iwerks secretly created the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, Plane Crazy, with the Disney and Iwerks families inking at home after hours. Plane Crazy was drawn entirely by Iwerks at an astonishing rate of approximately 700 drawings per day.
Initially, theater owners resisted running the new cartoons. Mickey Mouse was yet unknown and Disney had no official distributor, but when the third Mickey cartoon came out as an all-talkie, the exhibitors were sold. Adding sound to cartoons wasn’t entirely new, but Disney’s approach was. He realized that sound effects and music should be driven by plot, not added as an afterthought.
If Disney hadn’t lost Oswald to Mintz and Universal, there might not have been a Mickey Mouse. From then on, Disney fiercely protected his copyrights, affecting copyright laws of the U.S. and the world to this day. Mickey and other Disney characters would have long since passed into the public domain if not for the intense lobbying for copyright extensions by the Walt Disney Company.
As for Oswald, he had a life after Disney. Eclipsed by Mickey’s fame, he faded from films in 1938, appearing one last time in 1943. He lasted longer in print, gracing the comic pages through the 1960s in the U.S., and later in Mexico and Italy. In 2004 and 2005, the original Oswald became a pop culture hit in Japan, spawning a craze. Finally, in 2006, the Walt Disney Company reacquired Oswald as part of an assets exchange with Universal. After almost 70 years, Oswald was finally home at Disney, taking his place alongside Mickey and the rest of the iconic Disney characters.

Animals felt before a natural disaster
00:00 - Animals felt before a natural disaster
On December 26, 2004, an earthquake along the floor of the Indian Ocean was responsible for a tsunami that claimed the lives of thousands of people in Asia and East Africa. In the midst of all the destruction, wildlife officials at Sri Lanka's Yala National Park have reported no mass animal deaths. Yala National Park is a wildlife reserve populated by hundreds of wild animals including various species of reptiles, amphibians, and ?mammals. Among the most popular residents are the reserves elephants, leopards, and monkeys. Researchers believe that these animals were able to sense the danger long before humans
00:52 - 1 - Can Animals Sense Natural Disasters?
Animals have keen senses that help them avoid predators or locate prey. It is thought that these senses might also help them detect pending disasters. Several countries have conducted research on the detection of earthquakes by animals. There are two theories as to how animals may be able to detect earthquakes. One theory is that animals sense the earth's vibrations. Another is that they can detect changes in the air or gases released by the earth. There has been no conclusive evidence as to how animals may be able to sense earthquakes. Some researchers believe the animals at Yala National Park were able to detect the earthquake and move to higher ground before the tsunami hit, causing massive waves and flooding.
Other researchers are skeptical about using animals as earthquake and natural disaster detectors. They cite the difficulty of developing a controlled study that can connect a specific animal behavior with an earthquake occurrence. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) officially states, "Changes in animal behavior cannot be used to predict earthquakes. Even though there have been documented cases of unusual animal behavior prior to earthquakes, a reproducible connection between a specific behavior and the occurrence of an earthquake has not been made. Because of their finely tuned senses, animals can often feel the earthquake at its earliest stages before the humans around it can. This feeds the myth that the animal knew the earthquake was coming. But animals also change their behavior for many reasons, and given that an earthquake can shake millions of people, it is likely that a few of their pets will, by chance, be acting strangely before an earthquake."
Although scientists disagree as to whether animal behavior can be used to predict earthquakes and natural disasters, they all agree that it is possible for animals to sense changes in the environment before humans. Researchers around the world are continuing to study animal behavior and earthquakes. It is hoped that these studies will help to aid earthquake predictions.
02:59 - 2 - Unusual Animal Behavior:
Toads
In 2009, toads near L'Aquila, Italy deserted their mating sites prior to an earthquake. They did not return until a few days later after the last of the aftershocks. Researchers suggest that the toads may have been able to detect changes in the planet's atmospheric electrical fields. Changes in the ionosphere occurred prior to the earthquake and is thought to be related to either radon gas release or gravity waves.
Birds and Mammals
By reviewing motion-sensor camera activity, scientists in Yanachaga National Park, Peru noticed behavioral changes in the birds and mammals at the park prior to an earthquake in 2011. The animals exhibited a sharp decrease in activity for up to three weeks prior the quake. The lack of activity was even more pronounced in the week prior to the event. The researchers also noted a change in the ionosphere seven to eight days before the earthquake.
Goats
In 2012, researchers studying goat behavior on Mount Etna in Sicily noticed that the goats became nervous and fled hours before a volcanic eruption. The researchers believe that the goats could detect early warning signs of the eruption such as tremors and the release of gases. It was also noted that the goats only ran away prior to violent eruptions and not in response to every ground tremor. The researchers are now using GPS trackers to monitor animal movements worldwide in the hopes of being able to predict natural disasters more reliably.

Bull Moose Jackson
00:00 - Bull Moose Jackson
00:14 - 1 - Bull Moose Jackson Biography:
Allegedly, Benjamin Jackson resembled a bull moose. At least, that's what a few wags in Lucky Millinder's band thought -- and the colorful moniker stuck. Up until then, he was Benjamin Jackson, but it was as Bull Moose that he lit up the R&B charts repeatedly during the late '40s and early '50s. Jackson had a split musical personality -- he sang "I Love You, Yes I Do" and "All My Love Belongs to You" like a pop crooner, then switched gears to belt out the double-entendre naughties "I Want a Bowlegged Woman" and "Big Ten Inch Woman" with total abandon. Record buyers loved both sides of the Moose.
00:55 - 2 - start:
Jackson was a childhood violinist prior to taking up the sax. He proved accomplished on the latter, blowing jazz in a variety of situations before latching on with Millinder's outfit in 1944 as both singer and saxist. His first 78 under his own name for Syd Nathan's fledgling Queen logo was "I Know Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well," an answer to a popular Millinder tune from the year before that became a smash in its own right. Jackson dubbed his combo the Buffalo Bearcats due to his frequent gigs at a Buffalo nitery.
01:30 - 3 - Success:
Moose hit big for Nathan's King label in 1947 with "I Love You, Yes I Do"; in 1948 with "Sneaky Pete," "All My Love Belongs to You," "I Want a Bowlegged Woman," "I Can't Go on Without You," and two more; and in 1949 with "Little Girl, Don't Cry" and "Why Don't You Haul Off and Love Me" (the latter a cover of Wayne Raney's hillbilly hit, a popular cross-fertilizing practice at King). He also made an appearance in the 1948 film Boarding House Blues with Millinder's band.
Some of Jackson's hilariously risqué stuff -- "Big Ten Inch Record" and the astonishingly raunchy "Nosey Joe" (penned by the young but obviously streetwise Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller), both from 1952 -- were probably too suggestive to merit airplay, but they're stellar examples of jump blues at its craziest.
02:20 - 4 - End of career:
Jackson stayed at King into 1955. Six years later, he briefly reentered the charts by remaking "I Love You, Yes I Do" for 7 Arts, but it was an isolated occurrence (catering kept the bills paid during the lean years in Washington, D.C.). There was a belated outbreak of Moosemania! in 1985 when his LP of that name emerged in conjunction with a Pittsburgh band called the Flashcats, but Moose's heartwarming comeback was short -- lung cancer felled him in 1989.

VARETA DILLARD
00:00 - VARETA DILLARD
00:17 - 1 - A vocalist:
Varetta Dillard was one of the great female R&B vocalists, right up there with Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker, although she never achieved their fame. In his masterful book “The Sound of the City”, Charlie Gillett writes : “Faye Adams, Little Esther, Varetta Dillard and Big Maybelle were all committed too firmly to the conventions of the blues to be able to make the transition to rock ’n’ roll, despite great reputations as rhythm and blues singers” (p. 129-130). But in my opinion, quite a few of her recordings can be classified as rock and roll.
00:52 - 2 - Life:
Born with a rare bone disease of the legs that required numerous operations, Dillard spent much of her childhood in hospital. There she developed her singing talents by performing for the hospital staff and other patients. After competing in a variety of amateur singing contests throughout New York, Dillard won two consecutive competitions at the prestigious Apollo Theater in 1951. There she was discovered by Lee Magid of Savoy Records, who signed her to the label and became her producer. Her third Savoy single, “Easy Easy Baby” (Savoy 847, released in May 1952), became the first of her three chart entries (# 8 R&B). The other two were “Mercy Mr. Percy” (# 6, 1953), which became her signature song, and “Johnny Has Gone” (# 6, 1955), the latter being a tribute to the late Johnny Ace. Dillard also recorded a few duets with H-Bomb Ferguson. The fact that Varetta could not walk without crutches did not prevent her from going on tour with some of the major R&B artists of the day.
02:01 - 3 - Success:
Towards the end of 1955 she left Savoy for RCA. At first her records were released on the Groove subsidiary. After that label was discontinued in early 1957 she was moved to the parent label. The advent of rock and roll caused her to adjust her style, though not much. The Groove/RCA recordings have a more commercial sound than the Savoy tracks. During this period Dillard was accompanied by top New York session men like Mickey Baker, King Curtis and Panama Francis, but she did not return to the charts. Some of the highlights from this period include “Mama Don’t Want”, “Got You On My Mind”, “I’m Gonna Tell My Daddy” (all 1956) and “That’s Why I Cry” (1957). Not so good was another tribute record, “I Miss You Jimmy” (1956), this time in memory of James Dean. Allegedly she hated the song, but was pressured to record it. On the 1958 single “Star of Fortune”/“The Rules of Love”, produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, she received vocal support from the Cookies. The A-side was a modest hit in Canada.
Varetta released only one record in 1959, but it was a powerful rocker, “Scorched”, on Herb Abramson’s Triumph label. Then she moved to Cub, a subsidiary of MGM. Three Cub singles came out in 1960-61, including a remake of “Mercy Mr. Percy”, but compared to her earlier recordings, these sides were rather poppy and not very strong. She did not record after 1961.
03:41 - 4 - Gospel Group:
Soon thereafter, Dillard joined her husband’s gospel group, the Tri-Odds, who were active in the Civil Rights movement. After this group disbanded in the late 1960s, she quit her professional career as a singer and worked a variety of jobs, including work as a music therapist with chronically ill children. In 1989 Bear Family released two CDs by Varetta (“Got You On My Mind” and “The Lovin’ Bird”) with the complete post-Savoy recordings (51 tracks), including no less than 23 previously unissued numbers. Varetta Dillard died of cancer in 1993, in Brooklyn, at the age of sixty.

Historians Found the Holy Grail
00:00 - Historians Found the Holy Grail
00:04 - 1 - Found:
Spanish historians say they have discovered what Monty Python could not — the Holy Grail, the legendary cup Jesus supposedly drank from at the Last Supper.
The Spaniards — Margarita Torres and Jose Ortega del Rio — believe the 2,000-year-old vessel is in a church in Leon, northern Spain.
The pair spent three years studying the history of the chalice and last week published a book, “The Kings of the Grail,” making their case.
The onyx chalice, they explained, was concealed within another antique vessel known as the Chalice of Doña Urruca, which is located in León’s basilica of Saint Isidore.
The historians said it has been there since the 11th century.
00:17 - 2 - History of the chalice:
“This is a very important discovery because it helps solve a big puzzle,” Torres told The Irish Times. “We believe this could be the start of a wonderful stage of research.”
She said the duo had been researching the history of some Islamic remains in the Saint Isidore basilica. But their discovery of two medieval Egyptian documents that mentioned the chalice of Christ caused them to change direction, the paper reported.
Those parchments told a tale of how Muslims took the sacred cup from the Christian community in Jerusalem to Cairo.
It was then given to an emir on Spain’s Mediterranean coast in return for help he gave to Egyptians who were suffering a famine.
The historians’ research has been backed up by scientific dating, which estimates that the cup in question was made between 200 BC and 100 AD.
The scientists admit the first 400 years of the cup’s history remain a mystery, and they can’t prove the chalice ever actually touched Christ’s lips.
But they insist there is no doubt that this is the cup that early Christians revered as the chalice used at the Last Supper.
“The only chalice that could be considered the chalice of Christ is that which made the journey to Cairo and then from Cairo to León — and that is this chalice,” said Torres, who teaches medieval history at the University of León.
Countless scientists and historians have pursued the Holy Grail, an effort chronicled in Arthurian legend, made into pulp adventure with “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” and satirized by the British comedy troupe Monty Python in 1975’s “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.”

Landslide
00:00 -Landslide
00:05 - 1 - The causes:
A landslide is the movement of rock, earth, or debris down a sloped section of land. Landslides are caused by rain, earthquakes, volcanoes, or other factors that make the slope unstable. Geologists, scientists who study the physical formations of the Earth, sometimes describe landslides as one type of mass wasting. A mass wasting is any downward movement in which the Earth's surface is worn away. Other types of mass wasting include rockfalls and the flow of shore deposits called alluvium. Near populated areas, landslides present major hazards to people and property. Landslides cause an estimated 25 to 50 deaths and $3.5 billion in damage each year in the United States.
00:53 - 2 - What causes landslides:
Landslides have three major causes: geology, morphology, and human activity. Geology refers to characteristics of the material itself. The earth or rock might be weak or fractured, or different layers may have different strengths and stiffness. Morphology refers to the structure of the land. For example, slopes that lose their vegetation to fire or drought are more vulnerable to landslides. Vegetation holds soil in place, and without the root systems of trees, bushes, and other plants, the land is more likely to slide away. A classic morphological cause of landslides is erosion, or weakening of earth due to water. In April 1983, the town of Thistle, Utah, experienced a devastating landslide brought on by heavy rains and rapidly melting snow. A mass of earth eventually totaling 305 meters wide, 61 meters thick, and 1.6 kilometers long (1,000 feet wide, 200 feet thick, and one mile long) slid across the nearby Spanish Fork River, damming it and severing railroad and highway lines. The landslide was the costliest in U.S. history, causing over $400 million in damage and destroying Thistle, which remains an evacuated ghost town today. Human activity, such as agriculture and construction, can increase the risk of a landslide. Irrigation, deforestation, excavation, and water leakage are some of the common activities that can help destabilize, or weaken, a slope.
02:31 - 3 -Types of landslides:
Types of Landslides There are many ways to describe a landslide. The nature of a landslide's movement and the type of material involved are two of the most common. Landslide MovementThere are several ways of describing how a landslide moves. These include falls, topples, translational slides, lateral spreads, and flows. In falls and topples, heavy blocks of material fall after separating from a very steep slope or cliff. Boulders tumbling down a slope would be a fall or topple. In translational slides, surface material is separated from the more stable underlying layer of a slope. An earthquake may shake the loosen top layer of soil from the harder earth beneath in this type of landslide. A lateral spread or flow is the movement of material sideways, or laterally. This happens when a powerful force, such as an earthquake, makes the ground move quickly, like a liquid. Landslide MaterialA landslide can involve rock, soil, vegetation, water, or some combination of all these. A landslide caused by a volcano can also contain hot volcanic ash and lava from the eruption. A landslide high in the mountains may have snow and snowmelt. Volcanic landslides, also called lahars, are among the most devastating type of landslides.
03:56 - 4 - The biggest slip:
The largest landslide in recorded history took place after the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in the U.S. state of Washington. The resulting flow of ash, rock, soil, vegetation and water, with a volume of about 2.9 cubic kilometers (0.7 cubic miles), covered an area of 62 square kilometers (24 square miles). Other FactorsAnother factor that might be important for describing landslides is the speed of the movement. Some landslides move at many meters per second, while others creep along at an centimeter or two a year. The amount of water, ice, or air in the earth should also be considered. Some landslides include toxic gases from deep in the Earth expelled by volcanoes. Some landslides, called mudslides, contain a high amount of water and move very quickly. Complex landslides consist of a combination of different material or movement types.

The Five Keys
00:00 - The Five Keys
00:14 - 1 - The Five Keys Biography :
The Five Keys are generally regarded by aficionados of 1950s R&B vocal group harmony as one of the finest groups to ever record in this genre. They are best known for their Capitol recordings of "Wisdom of a Fool," "Close Your Eyes," "Ling Ting Tong," and "Out of Sight, Out of Mind." But in collectors' circles their earlier recordings for Aladdin such as "My Saddest Hour," "Glory of Love," and "Red Sails in the Sunset" are even more highly revered and sought after. The group originally consisted of two sets of brothers; Rudy and Bernie West and Raphael and Ripley Ingram all hailing from Newport News, VA, part of the "Hampton Roads" area. This region had a rich history of high-caliber vocal music and had previously spawned great vocal ensembles like the Golden Gate Quartet and Norfolk Jazz Quartet. The West and Ingram brothers initially took on the name the Sentimental Four and soon decided to show off their talents by entering a local amateur program at the Jefferson Theater. After winning three consecutive weeks of amateur contests at the Jefferson, they were invited to perform at the prestigious Apollo Theater in New York City, where they also won.
01:27 - 2 - Entered the army:
This led to subsequent engagements at the Royal and Howard Theaters. As the group established their reputation along the Eastern Seaboard, they were noticed by Eddie Mesner, owner of the California-based Aladdin Records, who signed them to a recording contract. About this time, Raphael went into the army and was replaced by Maryland Pierce (formerly of the Avalons). Also added was another singer, Dickie Smith, and a sixth man, piano player Joe Jones. Reflecting the personnel changes, their name was changed from the Sentimental Four to the Five Keys. The Keys toured both the East and West Coasts and their Aladdin songs were recorded in New York and Los Angeles. Some of their approximately 17 Aladdin releases in the early '50s consisted of "Glory of Love," "How Long," "Someday Sweetheart," "Red Sails in the Sunset," and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" with Rudy West and Dickie Smith on leads; and "My Saddest Hour" and "Serve Another Round" with Maryland Pierce on lead.
In 1953, both Rudy and Dickie entered the army and were replaced by Ramon Loper and Ulysses Hicks. By mid-1954, the Keys' contract with Aladdin was expiring and their last Aladdin release, "Deep in My Heart," was reviewed in June of that year. In July of 1954, the Five Keys found themselves in the RCA studios, where they recorded four tracks. Two remained unreleased, and "Lawdy Miss Mary" backed with "I'll Follow You" were issued in August 1954 on RCA's subsidiary Groove label. The Keys' manager, Saul Richfield, must have been working very hard for his group at this time, for on August 29, 1954, Capitol announced that they had signed the Five Keys. RCA immediately stopped production of the Groove release and it is now the rarest of the Five Keys recordings. Now recording for Capitol, the Five Keys released "Ling Ting Tong," with Pierce on lead. The record was successful enough to eventually land them a spot of the Ed Sullivan TV show. When Hicks died suddenly in 1954, and before Rudy returned home from the service, the lead tenor position was filled temporarily by Dickie Smith's cousin, Willie Winfield, of the Harptones.
But by 1955, Rudy West was back and the Five Keys were in the right place at the right time to be recorded using Capitol's advanced audio production techniques. With Rudy on lead, and backed by the Howard Biggs Orchestra (former Ravens arranger) , they recorded "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" and "Wisdom of a Fool." Another great Capitol release, "Close Your Eyes," featured Maryland Pierce on lead, echoed hauntingly by Rudy's high-floating tenor. Tired of touring, Rudy retired from the group in 1958. In 1959, with the addition of Dickie Threat in Rudy's spot, they recorded several sides for the King label, the most notable being "Dream On" and "One Great Love." Perhaps it was because the record market was changing, or maybe the Keys weren't quite the same without Rudy, but they could not sustain the success they had achieved at Capitol. During this time, Rudy also recorded on his own for King, covering the Passions' "Just to Be With You" and the Fireflies' "You Were Mine" with an unlisted group.
In 1962, Rudy West produced and re-recorded "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" with a new group of Keys consisting of Rudy, Bernie West, and Dickie Smith, along with John Boyd and Willie Friday, for Seg-Way Records. On this version, the group's background harmonies were more pronounced than the Capitol release. In 1965, Rudy recorded "No Matter" on the Inferno label with yet another configuration of Keys, consisting of Rudy, Edmond Hall, Ollie Sidney, Theodore Jones, and George Winfield (yes, another of Willie's cousins). This grouping was also from the Newport News, VA, area and had previously recorded as the Chateaus on Epic and Warner Bros.
05:29 - 3 -Original Members:
The mid-'70s saw a resurgence of interest in 1950s doo-wop and Rudy West established another Keys group (similar to the Inferno group) that continued to perform through 1998. In 1992, the United In Group Harmony Association (U.G.H.A.) inducted the original Five Keys in to their Hall of Fame. All original members were present and performed together at the induction ceremony. This was their first time together in 40-plus years and would be the last time they would all take to the stage as a group. Rudy West passed away on May 14, 1998. His last performance was on April 18,1998, at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, NY. Even at that point in time, his voice was still magnificent, and his phrasing impeccable. The audience was justifiably thrilled at what would be the final performance of this legendary R&B artist. Ripley Ingram had previously passed away. The surviving original members are Bernie West, Dickie Smith, and Maryland Pierce. Fortunately, most of the Five Keys extensive recorded output is now available on various CDs.
