Janet Jackson 1st appearance of the year
00:00 - Janet Jackson 1st appearance of the year
00:08 - 1 - Tour in London:
Janet Jackson was dressed super casual while out and about in London on March 10. It’s her first public outing since her highly watched tell-all documentary came out.
00:21 - 2 - Discreet profile:
Janet Jackson, 55, took a stroll in Central London on Thursday, March 10, marking the first time the superstar’s been seen in public in nearly one year. The “Rhythm Nation” hitmaker was photographed all smiles while exiting a florist shop in England’s capital where she now lives. Janet, whose life was showcased in the new tell-all documentary on Lifetime and A&E, was dressed in a casual black sweatshirt and matching sweatpants. She also rocked a gray scarf, a black head scarf, black sunglasses, and a pair of white sneakers.
The last time Janet was seen in public was May 2021. She’s kept a pretty low profile in the past year, although she did participate in some virtual press interviews to promote her documentary series. She appeared on The Real via Zoom on January 28 and chatted with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show February 3. She was also featured as the cover story for Allure‘s February 2022 issue.
01:23 - 3 - Documentary Series:
The Janet Jackson documentary series premiered January 28 and 29 on Lifetime and A&E. The four-part special focused on so many different aspects of Janet’s life, including her brother Michael Jackson‘s scandals, her private life as a mom, and even the infamous Super Bowl Halftime Show. She also opened up about her complicated relationship with her late father, Joe Jackson, as a kid, although she denied he was ever abusive.
Janet’s been living in London with her son Eissa Al Mana, 5, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Quatari businessman, Wissam Al Mana. The five-time Grammy winner sweetly spoke about her son in the documentary. “The biggest change in my life is my son Eissa. He’s my heart, he’s my life,” she said in part 4 of the series. “He’s my heart, he’s my life…I love being a mother, I love my new job.”

flying supercar
00:00 - flying supercar
A flying car can transform from a sports car to an aircraft and vice versa in under 3 minutes.
The AirCar recently received a certificate of airworthiness from the Slovak Transport Authority.
The company developing the model, Klein Vision, wants to introduce an AirCar taxi service.
00:23 - 1 - Tests:
A car-aircraft hybrid, which can transform from a sports car into an aircraft in less than three minutes, is now certified to fly in Slovakia.
The AirCar, developed by Klein Vision, received a certificate of airworthiness from the Slovak Transport Authority in January.
The certification came after 75 hours of test flights, with more than 220 takeoffs and landings executed.
A team of up to eight people has been working on the prototype since 2017, according to Klein Vision cofounder, Anton Zajac, together clocking up around 100,000 hours of work.
00:59 - 2 - 1 Flew and autonomy
The AirCar completed its first inter-city flight in June last year, flying from the international airport in Nitra, Slovakia, to the international airport in Bratislava, Slovakia. The flight took a total of 35 minutes.
After arrival, the AirCar then transformed into a sports car and was driven by Zajac, alongside the AirCar's inventor, Professor Stefan Klein, to downtown Bratislava.
The AirCar is not restricted to airfields. It can take off from and land anywhere so long as the owner of the property gives permission, according to Zajac.
The current model can travel up to 370 miles, cruising at 140 miles per hour. According to Zajac, a new production model will have a range of around 630 miles.
01:49 - 3 - Motor model and what you will have to do to have one:
The AirCar is powered by a 1.6 litre BMW engine and runs on fuel sold at any gas station.
The dual-mode vehicle is also equipped with a ballistic parachute in case of an emergency incident or engine failure.
The models weighs 1,100 kilograms and can hold two people. Zajac told Insider that the company plans to introduce a three-seat model, as well as an amphibious version.
Since the dual-mode vehicle is a fully-fledged aircraft, anybody flying it will need a pilot's licence.
02:28 - 4 - Regulations and how to place your order now:
According to Zajac, the certification is a "huge milestone," not only in bringing forward a flying car that meets European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations, but also in setting the stage for the mass production of dual-model vehicles.
The AirCar has an EASA compatible certificate, meaning it can fly in any country in the European Union, with approval from local authorities. Zajac told Insider that the company is also currently applying for approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
"We are planning to introduce an AirCar taxi service," Zajac told Insider, adding that the company hopes to encourage around 5% of the private owners of the US' 220,000 small planes to switch to the AirCar.
Depending on factors like avionics - the electronic flight control systems fitted in an aircraft - it will cost anywhere between $500,000 and $1 million to purchase the AirCar.
Zajac said the company had already started to take orders from "selected" clients, and expected deliveries to begin in late 2023.

The El Dorados
00:00 - Biography
The El Dorados
00:06 - 1 - Biography:
One of the leading R&B vocal groups on Vee Jay, the El Dorados had a relatively short career with their first lineup, during which they scored a massive crossover hit, 1955's "At My Front Door" (number 17 on the pop charts and number one R&B, where it remained for 18 weeks). They managed only one other charting record -- 1956's "I'll Be Forever Loving You" -- before their initial breakup in 1959. Subsequent lineups and name changes (and alterations) brought no further success, but they continued performing well into the '80s.
00:45 - 2 - original group:
The original group featured five members -- Pirkle Lee Moses Jr. (lead), Louis Bradley (tenor), Jewel Jones (second tenor and baritone), James Maddox (baritone and bass), and Robert Glasper (bass) -- when they formed in the Englewood section of Chicago's south side in 1952 while still attending Englewood High School (the same school that the Moroccos attended). They were calling themselves the Five Stars. Johnny Moore, their high school custodian, liked the group so much and thought they showed so much promise, that he became their manager.
01:21 - 3 - beginning of end:
In 1954, just after graduation, Moses and Glasper took advantage of the Air Force's 90-day active duty program, but while Moses returned, Glasper remained with the Air Force. By then, Arthur Bassett (tenor) had temporarily replaced Moses, and Richard Nickens came in for Glasper. The Five Stars were now six, and a name change was inevitable. They were about to become the Cardinals (apparently, they had no knowledge of Atlantic's New York-based group) when the craze for naming your group after a popular car model hit, and since they couldn't call themselves the Cadillacs, the settled for Cadillacs' luxurious two-door model, the El Dorado, for inspiration. The El Dorados came to the attention of local Chicago WWCA disc jockey Al Benson, who witnessed first-hand how their gorgeous blend of harmonies and talent made for an exciting new group that he could support. They had already won first prize at a local talent show at the Club De Lisa. Benson arranged for the group to audition at a contest hosted by Vee Jay Records at the Park City Skating Rink. Amateur groups were challenged to compete against Vee Jay's Spaniels. The El Dorados rose to the challenge, winning the contest and a recording contract with the label.
The El Dorados' first single, a bluesy ballad called "My Loving Baby," was issued in September 1954, and was a popular regional seller. Their next effort had the group backing up Hazel McCollum on "Annie's Answer," which was Vee Jay's contribution to the ongoing "Annie" saga begun by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. Perhaps tiring of all the Annie nonsense, Arthur Bassett ankled the El Dorados (he also joined the Air Force), and the sextet slimmed down to a quintet. During the third week of September 1955, Vee Jay released the group's "At My Front Door," which stormed the Billboard R&B charts on September 24th and the Top 100 on October 15th. The song featured Al Duricati's pounding drum rhythm and a rousing sax solo. The so-called "baby talk" pre-finale by Moses Jr. made the record soar even further, and the lyrics about that "crazy little mama" became as legendary as the Annie saga. By the end of the year it had climbed to number 17 on the pop charts and number one R&B, where it remained for 18 weeks. (Pat Boone later did a cover version that charted at number seven pop).
03:54 - 4 - new releases but without so much success:
Their follow-up, "I'll Be Forever Lovin' You" (originally recorded by the Rip Chords but never released), was issued during the second week of December. It was a rocker that exuded jazz, pop, and R&B overtones, but although it made it to number eight R&B in February 1956, it never charted on the pop lists. Soon after the release of the follow-up, Nickens left and the El Dorados soldiered on as a quartet. A few additional singles performed well in certain U.S. cities, but didn't measure up to their prior hit status. Their next single, "Tears on My Pillow" (a different song from Little Anthony and the Imperials' hit record), was the last by all of the original El Dorados; soon after its release, the group and Pirkle Moses Jr. separated over a disagreement on new management.
Moses Jr. soon joined another Vee Jay act, the Kool Gents, who had been left without a singer when their frontman, Dee Clark, departed for a solo career. John McCall (tenor), Douglas Brown (second tenor), Teddy Long (second tenor and baritone), and Johnny Carter (bass) of the Kool Gents joined with Moses Jr., to become the New El Dorados. They released two singles in 1958 for Vee Jay, but when neither sold, they eventually left Vee Jay in a money dispute and subsequently disbanded altogether.
During this same time, the remaining El Dorados -- Jones, Bradley, and Maddox -- joined up with new lead singer Marvin Smith. Smith had moved with his family to the west side of Chicago in the late '40s, where he attended Crane High and sang on street corners and in church choirs, before joining the group as their new lead vocalist. To avoid legal problems with Vee Jay, the group's name was changed to Those Four El Dorados for 1958's "A Lonely Boy," Academy Records of Chicago. Jewel Jones' name on the label was spelled J-u-e-l-l (each member's name was listed). Those Four El Dorados' later traveled to the West Coast, and connected with a former NBA basketball star Don Barksdale, who had formed his Rhythm Record Company in Oakland, CA. The group changed monikers again, this time calling themselves the Tempos, but the group faltered again, and returned to Chicago, splitting up in 1961.
Marvin Smith went on to join the Artistics on Okeh and Brunswick Records as the lead for such R&B charters as "I'm Gonna Miss You" (number 55 Top 100, number nine R&B, 1966) and "Girl I Need You" (number 69 Top 100, number 26 R&B, 1967). Johnny Carter, meanwhile, tried to keep the name alive by forming yet another new New El Dorados in late 1959, with John McCall, Danny Edwards, and Eugene Huff (formerly of the Valquins). This group lasted until 1965. Carter tried again in 1971, hooking up with Huff, Spence Goulsby, Jr., and Lee Toussaint on lead for two sides on Paula, but that group was gone by the early '80s. Moses Jr. recorded with an unknown group as the Squires in 1963 on Boss ("It's Time") and then did a solo effort titled The Docks. In 1965, Moses Jr., Melvin Morrow, and George Prager (the latter two late of the Moroccos) came together as the Major Minors. In 1969, this group once again became the El Dorados, doing a single for Torrid Records. Pirkle Moses Jr. then quit for almost a decade but returned with yet another El Dorados-lineup with tenor Norman Palm (from the Pastels on United), second tenor Billy Henderson, George Prayer (baritone), and Anthony Charles (bass). Around 1985 Henderson left and Anthony Charles passed away. Eugene Huff (of Carter's El Dorados) and Larry Johnson (Moroccos) took their places and the group recorded a ballad for Delano Records in 1987. In effect, that last El Dorados recording group contained members formerly in four Chicago-area groups: the Palms, the Moroccos, the Kool Gents, and the El Dorados. On December 26, 2000, the original El Dorados lead vocalist Pirkle Lee Moses, Jr. passed away.

stone forests
00:00 -stone forests
00:10 - 1 - Scientists study:
According to findings from a study released this week, scientists have confirmed that mysterious stone forests are formed by flowing water eroding the landscape, creating a unique rocky terrain with needle-sharp points.
The study was conducted by scientists from New York University, including Leif Ristroph, an associate professor at NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Michael Shelley, also a professor at the Courant Institute, Jinzi Mac Huang, an NYU doctoral student, and Joshua Tong, an NYU undergraduate.
Details are published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, where the researchers describe how they performed simulations to demonstrate how these fantasy-like structures may have been created.
Stone forests are vast landscapes of massive limestone rocks that almost look like giant petrified trees, giving the illusion of a forest of stone. They are incredibly striking in appearance and attract a steady flow of tourism, but their origins have long been a mystery to science.
01:15 - 2 - Where to find them:
The most famous stone forests can be found in China and Madagascar, but are seen dispersed all over the world, and each have rich cultural significance.
The Yunnan province in southwestern China is home to the Stone Forest of Shilin, approximately 270 million years old and over 180 miles large. It is generally believed that over the years, the forest got its shape from seismic activity and erosion from wind and water.
The landscape is so large and labyrinth-like, it is split into many smaller parks, each with distinct landmarks including caves, waterfalls, and even an underground river. One landmark is known as the Ashima stone, which holds a story of a girl who turned to stone and attracts an annual festival for the locals.
Across the globe in the Melaky region of northwest Madagascar is the Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park. It sits atop two formations called the Great Tsingy and the Little Tsingy.
The Tsingys are plateaus where groundwater has formed complex caverns with horizontal and vertical erosion patterns. The word Tsingy translates from Malagasy to English as “where one cannot walk barefoot” referring to the badlands of this region.
In order to figure out how the pointed pinnacles in the stone forests are formed, the team looked at karst topography, which is the result of the erosion of soluble rocks like limestone.
Limestone covers approximately 10% of Earth and is incredibly porous. It easily decays when exposed to acidity, and rainwater is a big culprit in this phenomenon.
02:55 - 3 - How it was formed:
Rain is naturally acidic due to carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and although it is a very weak acid, once it comes into contact with the calcite in the stone it begins to dissolve the mineral.
This process is responsible for the famous underground limestone caves — as the rainwater percolates through the soil, it begins to break up the limestone enough to form large openings. These limestone caves can function as carbonate aquifers, producing and containing freshwater for hundreds of millions of people.
First, the team used a combination of computer simulations and a mathematical model of their design, which replicated what happens when rocks such as these begin to dissolve. Secondly, they performed experiments in the Applied Mathematics Lab at NYU to further test their simulations.
In these experiments, they used a block of candy that contained internal pores and was similar in solubility to limestone to try to create their own karst topography. They found that their results were virtually identical to those from the simulation.
After placing the sugar-block in an underwater tank, it instantly started to dissolve naturally into a spiked “sugar forest” with the same pinnacle shapes seen in the stone forests, confirming their suspicions.
Furthermore, they were able to see the flows of sugar coming off of the pinnacles by shining green lasers down from above and adding microparticles to the water. They could see how the flows sunk to the bottom of the tank due to gravity as they dissolved into water.
“This work reveals a mechanism that explains how these sharply pointed rock spires, a source of wonder for centuries, come to be,” Ristroph said. “Through a series of simulations and experiments, we show how flowing water carves ultra-sharp spikes in landforms.”
The findings suggest that these structures are formed underwater and emerge over long periods of time when the crust beneath it lifts above sea level. The authors note that the results of their work hold great potential to assist in the manufacturing of other important, sharp-pointed objects, such as micro-needles and probes necessary for some medical procedures.

Junior Wells
00:00 - Junior Wells
00:04 - 1 - Biography:
He was one bad dude, strutting across the stage like a harp-toting gangster, mesmerizing the crowd with his tough-guy antics and rib-sticking Chicago blues attack. Amazingly, Junior Wells kept at precisely this sort of thing for over 40 years; he was an active performer from the dawn of the '50s until his death in the late '90s. Born in Memphis, Wells learned his earliest harp licks from another future legend, Little Junior Parker, before he came to Chicago at age 12. In 1950, the teenager passed an impromptu audition for guitarists Louis and David Myers at a house party on the South Side, and the Deuces were born. When drummer Fred Below came aboard, they changed their name to the Aces.
00:51 - 2 - Singer:
Little Walter left Muddy Waters in 1952 (in the wake of his hit instrumental "Juke"), and Wells jumped ship to take his place with Waters. That didn't stop the Aces (who joined forces with Little Walter) from backing Wells on his initial sessions for States Records, though -- his debut date produced some seminal Chicago blues efforts, including his first reading of "Hoodoo Man," a rollicking "Cut That Out," and the blazing instrumentals "Eagle Rock" and "Junior's Wail." More fireworks ensued the next year when he encored for States with a mournful "So All Alone" and the jumping "Lawdy! Lawdy!" (Muddy Waters moonlighted on guitar for the session). Wells was already exhibiting his tempestuous side -- he was allegedly AWOL from the Army at the time.
01:41 - 3 - success:
In 1957, Wells hooked up with producer Mel London, who owned the Chief and Profile logos. The association resulted in many of Wells' most enduring sides, including "I Could Cry" and the rock & rolling "Lovey Dovey Lovely One" in 1957, the grinding national R&B hit "Little by Little" (with Willie Dixon providing vocal harmony) in 1959, and the R&B-laced classic "Messin' with the Kid" in 1960 (sporting Earl Hooker's immaculate guitar work). Wells' harp was de-emphasized during this period on record in favor of his animated vocals. With Bob Koester producing, the harpist cut an all-time classic LP for Delmark in 1965. Hoodoo Man Blues vividly captured the feel of a typical Wells set at Theresa's Lounge, even though it was cut in a studio. With Buddy Guy (initially billed as "Friendly Chap" due to his contract with Chess) providing concise lead guitar, Wells laid down definitive versions of "Snatch It Back and Hold It," "You Don't Love Me," and "Chitlin' con Carne."
The harpist made his second appearance on the national R&B lists in 1968 with a funky James Brown-tinged piece, "You're Tuff Enough," for Mercury's feisty Blue Rock logo. Wells had been working in this bag for some time, alarming the purists but delighting R&B fans; his brass-powered 1966 single for Bright Star, "Up in Heah," had previously made a lot of local noise. After a fine mid-'70s set for Delmark (On Tap), little was heard from Wells on vinyl for an extended spell, though he continued to enjoy massive appeal at home (Theresa's was his principal haunt for many a moon) and abroad (whether on his own or in partnership with Guy; they opened for the Rolling Stones on one memorable tour and cut an inconsistent but interesting album for Atco in the early '70s).
03:40 - 4 - the end of the career:
Toward the end of his career, Wells just didn't seem to be into recording anymore; a pair of sets for Telarc in the early '90s were major disappointments, but his last studio session, 1997's Come on in This House, found him on the rebound and the critics noticed: the album won the W.C. Handy Blues Award for Traditional Blues Album in 1997. Even when he came up short in the studio, Wells remained a potent live attraction, cutting a familiar swaggering figure, commanding the attention of everyone in the room with one menacing yelp or a punctuating blast from his amplified harmonica. He continued performing until he was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in the summer of 1997. That fall, he suffered a heart attack while undergoing treatment, sending him into a coma. Wells stayed in the coma until he passed away on January 15, 1998. A handful of compilations were released shortly after his death, as was the film Blues Brothers 2000, which featured a cameo by Wells.

Hell's gates will close
00:00 - Hell's gates will close
00:05 - 1 - President wants to close:
The leader of Turkmenistan would like to finally close the "Gates of Hell" that have burned continuously in the nation's Karakum desert for five decades, according to recent televised remarks.
In a Jan. 8 appearance on Turkmenistan's state TV channel, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov urged officials to "find a solution to extinguish the fire," citing concerns for the health of people living near the flaming crater, as well as lost business opportunities, Agence France-Presse(opens in new tab) (AFP) reported.
"We are losing valuable natural resources for which we could get significant profits and use them for improving the well-being of our people," Berdymukhamedov said, according to AFP.
00:48 - 2 - What is it:
What exactly are the Gates of Hell? Also known by the far-less-apocalyptic name of the Darvaza gas crater, the gates are a large hole in the desert measuring roughly 230 feet (70 meters) wide and at least 65 feet (20 meters) deep.
Excavation of the hole began in 1971 during a Soviet drilling operation to extract gas, according to AFP. (Turkmenistan is an ex-Soviet nation.) Disaster struck when the ground beneath the drill rig collapsed, and the rig plunged into a natural gas cavern. As noxious methane gas leaked into the air, geologists decided to set the crater on fire, estimating that the gas within would only burn for a few weeks.
01:33 - 3 - Fifty years later:
The Gates of Hell still blaze — and have even become one of Turkmenistan's top tourist destinations, according to AFP. The burning crater gained a boost in internet fame in 2019, when President Berdymukhamedov released a video(opens in new tab) of himself driving through the desert near the hole in a rally car, performing doughnuts.
Why Berdymukhamedov has soured on this flaming photo-op in the desert is unclear, though his economic concerns may be a clue. According to Vice.com(opens in new tab), Turkmenistan sits atop the fourth-largest known reserve of natural gas in the world, and the country's economy is largely dependent on gas exports.

Slim Harpo
00:00 - Biography
Slim Harpo
00:07 - 1 - Start:
In the large stable of blues talent that Crowley, Louisiana producer Jay Miller recorded for the Nashville-based Excello label, no one enjoyed more mainstream success than Slim Harpo. Just a shade behind Lightnin' Slim in local popularity, Harpo played both guitar and neck-rack harmonica in a more down-home approximation of Jimmy Reed, with a few discernible, and distinctive, differences. Harpo's music was certainly more laid-back than Reed's, if such a notion was possible. But the rhythm was insistent and, overall, Harpo was more adaptable than Reed or most other bluesmen. His material not only made the national charts, but also proved to be quite adaptable for white artists on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Kinks, Dave Edmunds with Love Sculpture, Van Morrison with Them, Sun rockabilly singer Warren Smith, Hank Williams, Jr., and the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
01:06 - 2 - A new musical style:
A people-pleasing club entertainer, he certainly wasn't above working rock & roll rhythms into his music, along with hard-stressed, country & western vocal inflections. Several of his best tunes were co-written with his wife Lovelle and show a fine hand for song construction, appearing to have arrived at the studio already well-formed. His harmonica playing was driving and straightforward, full of surprising melody, while his vocals were perhaps best described by writer Peter Guralnick as "if a Black country & western singer or a white rhythm & blues singer were attempting to impersonate a member of the opposite genre." And here perhaps was Harpo's true genius, and what has given his music a wider currency. By the time his first single became a Southern jukebox favorite, his songs were being adapted and played by white musicians left and right. Here was good-time Saturday-night blues that could be sung by white musicians with a straight face. Nothing resembling the emotional investment of a Howlin' Wolf or a Muddy Waters was required; it all came natural and easy, and its influence has stood the test of time.
02:16 - 3 - Life:
He was born James Moore just outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After his parents died, he dropped out of school to work every juke joint, street corner, picnic, and house rent party that came his way. By this time he had acquired the alias of Harmonica Slim, which he used until his first record was released. It was fellow bluesman Lightnin' Slim who first steered him to local recordman J.D. Miller. The producer used him as an accompanist to Hopkins on a half-dozen sides before recording him on his own. When it came time to release his first single ("I'm a King Bee"), Miller informed him that there was another Harmonica Slim recording on the West Coast, and a new name was needed before the record could come out. Moore's wife took the slang word for harmonica, added an "o" to the end of it, and a new stage name was the result, one that would stay with Slim Harpo for the rest of his career.
03:14 - 4 - Absolute success:
Harpo's first record became a double-sided R&B hit, spawning numerous follow-ups on the "King Bee" theme, but even bigger was "Rainin' in My Heart," which made the Billboard Top 40 pop charts in the summer of 1961. It was another perfect distillation of Harpo's across-the-board appeal, and was immediately adapted by country, Cajun, and rock & roll musicians; anybody could play it and sound good doing it. In the wake of the Rolling Stones covering "I'm a King Bee" on their first album, Slim had the biggest hit of his career in 1966 with "Baby, Scratch My Back." Harpo described it "as an attempt at rock & roll for me," and its appearance in Billboard's Top 20 pop charts prompted the dance-oriented follow-ups "Tip on In" and "Tee-Ni-Nee-Ni-Nu," both R&B charters. For the first time in his career, Harpo appeared in such far-flung locales as Los Angeles and New York City. Flush with success, he contacted Lightnin' Slim, who was then residing outside of Detroit, Michigan. The two reunited and formed a band, touring together as a sort of blues mini-package to appreciative white rock audiences until the end of the decade. The new year beckoned with a tour of Europe (his first ever) all firmed up, and a recording session scheduled when he arrived in London. Unexplainably, Harpo -- who had never been plagued with any ailments stronger than a common cold -- suddenly succumbed to a heart attack on January 31, 1970.

The Brazilian Indians
00:00 - The Brazilian Indians
00:05 - 1 - Indigenous population:
There are about 305 tribes living in Brazil today, totaling around 900,000 people, or 0.4% of Brazil’s population.
The government has recognized 690 territories for its indigenous population, covering about 13% of Brazil’s land mass. Nearly all of this reserved land (98.5%) lies in the Amazon.
But although roughly half of all Brazilian Indians live outside the Amazon, these tribes only occupy 1.5% of the total land reserved for Indians in the country.
Those peoples who live in the savannahs and Atlantic forests of the south, such as the Guarani and the Kaingang, and the dry interior of the north-east such as the Pataxo Hã Hã Hãe and Tupinambá, were among the first to come into contact with the European colonists when they landed in Brazil in 1500.
Despite hundreds of years of contact with expanding frontier society, they have in most cases fiercely maintained their language and customs in the face of the massive theft of, and continuing encroachment onto, their lands.
01:13 - 2 - Biggest tribe:
The largest tribe today is the Guarani, numbering 51,000, but they have very little land left. During the past 100 years almost all their land has been stolen from them and turned into vast, dry networks of cattle ranches, soya fields and sugar cane plantations. Many communities are crammed into overcrowded reserves, and others live under tarpaulins by the side of highways.
The people with the largest territory are the relatively isolated 19,000 Yanomami, who occupy 9.4 million hectares in the northern Amazon, an area about the same size as the US state of Indiana and slightly larger than Hungary.
The largest Amazonian tribe in Brazil is the Tikuna, who number 40,000. The smallest consists of just one man, who lives in a small patch of forest surrounded by cattle ranches and soya plantations in the western Amazon, and eludes all attempts at contact.
Many Amazonian peoples number fewer than 1,000. The Akuntsu tribe, for example, now consists of just four people, and the Awá just 450.
02:21 - 3 - Not found:
Brazil is home to more uncontacted peoples than anywhere on the planet. It is now thought that over 100 such groups live in the Amazon. Some number several hundred and live in remote border areas in Acre state and in protected territories such as the Vale do Javari, on the border with Peru. Others are scattered fragments, the survivors of tribes virtually wiped out by the impacts of the rubber boom and expanding agriculture in the last century. Many, such as the nomadic Kawahiva, who number a few dozen, are fleeing loggers and ranchers invading their land.
As pressure mounts to exploit their lands, all uncontacted Indians are extremely vulnerable both to violent attack (which is common), and to diseases widespread elsewhere like flu and measles, to which they have no immunity.
03:11 - 4 - Means of subsistence:
Most tribes live entirely off the forests, savannas and rivers by a mixture of hunting, gathering and fishing. They grow plants for food and medicine and use them to build houses and make everyday objects.
‘We Indians are like plants. How can we live without our soil, without our land?’
(Marta Guarani)
Staple crops such as manioc, sweet potato, corn, bananas and pineapples are grown in gardens. Animals such as peccaries, tapir and monkeys, and birds like the curassow are hunted for meat.
Some tribes, like the Matis, use long blowguns with poisoned darts to catch prey. Most use bows and arrows, and some also use shotguns. Nuts, berries and fruits such as açai and peach palm are regularly harvested and bees’ honey is relished.
Fish, particularly in the Amazon, is an important food. Many indigenous people use fish poison or timbó to stun and catch fish. The Enawene Nawe, who do not eat red meat, are renowned for the elaborate wooden dams called ‘waitiwina’ which they build across small rivers every year to catch and smoke large quantities of fish. Their Yãkwa ceremony is linked to the fishing dams and has been recognized as part of Brazil’s national heritage.
A handful of peoples – the Awá, the Maku in the north-west and some uncontacted tribes – are nomadic hunter-gatherers. They live in small extended family groups and keep few possessions, which allows them to move rapidly through the forest. They can erect shelters from tree saplings and palm leaves in just a few hours.
Like all indigenous peoples, they carry incredibly detailed mental maps of the land and its topography, fauna and flora, and the best hunting places. The Awá sometimes hunt at night using torches made from the resin of the maçaranduba tree.
05:09 - 5 - Indigenous knowledge:
‘When my children are hungry I just go into the forest and find them food.’ (Peccary Awá)
Ethnobotanical knowledge and conservation role
Indigenous peoples have unrivalled knowledge of their plants and animals, and play a crucial role in conserving biodiversity.
‘You have schools, we don’t, but we know how to look after the forest.’
Davi Kopenawa Yanomami
According to scientific studies, indigenous lands are ‘currently the most important barrier to Amazon deforestation.’

James Carr
00:00 - 1 - Biography
James Carr
One of the greatest pure vocalists that deep Southern soul ever produced, James Carr is often mentioned in the same breath as Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Aretha Franklin in terms of the wrenching emotional power in his delivery. Or at least he is by hardcore soul aficionados; despite producing several classic R&B singles and some of the most intense country-soul ever waxed, Carr never achieved the pop crossover success that could have made him a household name, and his material wasn't always as distinctive as that of Stax artists like Redding or Sam & Dave. Ultimately, though, Carr's greatest obstacle was himself: he was plagued for much of his life by severe depression that made pursuit of a career -- or, for that matter, even single recording sessions -- extraordinarily difficult, and derailed his occasional comeback attempts.
01:00 - 2 - life:
James Carr was born June 13, 1942, in Coahoma County, MS, near Clarksdale; his father, a minister, moved the family to Memphis when Carr was very young. Carr began singing in church at age nine, and performed with several area gospel groups in his teenage years, including the Harmony Echoes (though not, as legend had it, the Soul Stirrers). Both Carr and Echoes manager Roosevelt Jamison had been harboring ambitions for careers in secular music, and the two began looking for a solo deal for Carr in 1963. Stax turned him down, but in late 1964 he caught on with Goldwax, a Memphis label started by Quinton Claunch (who'd earlier co-founded Hi Records) that, in its early days, also featured O.V. Wright (with whom Carr had sung in the Redemption Harmonizers). Over the next couple of years, Carr cut several singles that ranged from Motown-ish pop to soul-blues, searching for the best stylistic match for his richly expressive baritone.
02:05 - 3 - first successes:
arr finally hit in 1966 with the country-soul ballad "You Got My Mind Messed Up," a Top Ten R&B hit that earned him comparisons to Otis Redding. It kicked off the prime period of Carr's recording career, and among his next few singles was his clear-cut masterpiece "Dark End of the Street." Given a tortuously intense performance by Carr, "Dark End of the Street" was a bleak tale of adultery that marked the first songwriting collaboration between Dan Penn and Chips Moman; although the song was recorded by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Clarence Carter, Linda Ronstadt, and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Carr's original version still stands as definitive. Featuring other hit singles like the Redding-esque "Love Attack" and the exquisite "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man," Carr's 1966 debut LP You Got My Mind Messed Up is also considered a classic by many Southern soul collectors.
Despite Carr's first flush of success on the R&B charts over 1966-1967, things were not looking up. Carr signed on with Phil Walden, Otis Redding's manager, in 1966, but without Roosevelt Jamison around (he'd served as Carr's caretaker just as much as his manager), Carr found himself unable to deal with the stress of touring; he frequently wandered off alone and got lost. By 1968, his mental state had deteriorated greatly, making even recording sessions a challenge. He was able to complete a second LP, 1968's A Man Needs a Woman, but in Muscle Shoals for his last Goldwax session in 1969, he simply sat at the microphone and stared into space, singing only one song (the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody"). Not long afterward, Goldwax went bankrupt; wary of the singer's instability, Capitol rescinded an offer to buy out his contract, and although Carr signed with Atlantic, he released only one single in 1971.
04:06 - 4 - end of career:
In 1977, Carr released one single on the small River City label, which was run by Roosevelt Jamison. Two years later, he undertook a tour of Japan that started off well; however, at the Tokyo gig, Carr -- apparently having taken too many anti-depressants -- stood motionless at the microphone as though in a hypnotic trance. He returned to Memphis, where he lived with his sister (in between institutionalizations), and spent much of the '80s barely conscious of the world around him. With medication, his condition improved to the point where Jamison and Quinton Claunch cut an album with him in 1991 for a revived Goldwax. The record, Take Me to the Limit, received mixed reviews, although its very existence was an achievement in itself. Carr was even able to return to the road, touring the blues circuits in America and Europe. In 1994, he released another album on Claunch's new Soultrax label, titled Soul Survivor. Unfortunately, Carr was soon diagnosed with lung cancer, and spent several years battling the disease before finally succumbing on January 7, 2001.

The Coldest Inhabited Town On Earth
00:00 - The Coldest Inhabited Town On Earth
The pipes get frozen so bathrooms are outdoor. Cars have to be kept running or mechanics will freeze up. And vegetarians will have a tough time here. Here's a look at what it's like to live in the coldest place on earth
This is one place which is perpetually on "Winter is coming" mode. This is what it's like when hell freezes over. Okay, enough with the jokes. Especially when the name of the coldest inhabited place on earth is in itself an irony.
Oymyakon takes its name from the Russian for "water that doesn't freeze." And yet, this remote village in eastern Siberia has an average temperature of around -58 degrees Fahrenheit (that's -50 degrees Celsius) during winter.
00:55 - 1 - Cold record:
The lowest ever was a record -96.16 degrees Fahrenheit (-71.2 degrees Celsius) in 1924. You can see the monument in the town square which marks the day in 1924. North of the Sea of Okhotsk and close to the Arctic Circle, it became a settlement in the 1920s. Before that, it was a popular pitstop for winter herders who used to frequent a thermal spring for their reindeer.
Life can get pretty interesting here. A run to the loo is a feat. Water pipes get frozen and run the risk of bursting, so indoor plumbing is mostly absent and bathrooms are outhouses. People who live here have cars. But the extreme cold could freeze up mechanics. So they are left running, sometimes overnight. Which means gas stations stay open 24 hours a day.
Russki chai or vodka helps deal with the extreme temperatures. The low temperatures mean you cannot grow vegetables here. So locals mostly eat frozen raw fish and meat, including horse liver.
02:06 - 2 - in summer:
The village gets a short summer when it can go upto 96 degrees Fahrenheit (35.5 degrees Celsius). Winters are harsh. Sometimes a night can stretch on for 21 hours.
Come here during winter end and you can see the Cold Pole Festival. Hosted by Chyskhaan, a Yakutian pagan spirit, it has people taking part in dog sledding, reindeer races, ice fishing, and other sports.

Chuck Willins
00:00 - Chuck Willins
00:04 = 1 - Artist Biography
There were two distinct sides to Chuck Willis. In addition to being a convincing blues shouter, the Atlanta-born Willis harbored a vulnerable blues balladeer side. In addition, he was a masterful songwriter who penned some of the most distinctive R&B numbers of the 1950s. He can't be granted principal credit for his 1957 smash adaptation of "C.C. Rider," an irresistible update of a classic folk-blues, but Willis did write such gems as "I Feel So Bad" (later covered by Elvis Presley, Little Milton, and Otis Rush), the anguished ballads "Don't Deceive Me (Please Don't Go)" and "It's Too Late" (the latter attracting covers by Buddy Holly, Charlie Rich, and Otis Redding) and his swan song, "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes."
00:54 - 2 - Training:
Harold Willis (he adopted Chuck as a stage handle) received his early training singing at YMCA-sponsored "Teenage Canteens" in Atlanta and fronting the combos of local bandleaders Roy Mays and Red McAllister. Powerful DJ Zenas "Daddy" Sears took an interest in the young vocalist's career, hooking him up with Columbia Records in 1951. After a solitary single for the major firm, Willis was shuttled over to its recently reactivated OKeh R&B subsidiary.
In 1952, he crashed the national R&B lists for OKeh with a typically plaintive ballad, "My Story," swiftly encoring on the hit parade with a gentle cover of Fats Domino's "Goin' to the River" and his own "Don't Deceive Me" the next year and "You're Still My Baby" and the surging Latin-beat "I Feel So Bad" in 1954. Willis also penned a heart-tugging chart-topper for Ruth Brown that year, "Oh What a Dream."
01:54 - 3 - Success:
Willis moved over to Atlantic Records in 1956 and immediately enjoyed another round of hits with "It's Too Late" and "Juanita." Atlantic strove mightily to cross Willis over into pop territory, inserting an exotic steel guitar at one session and chirpy choirs on several more. The strategy eventually worked when his 1957 revival of the ancient "C.C. Rider" proved the perfect number to do the "Stroll" to; American Bandstand gave the track a big push, and Willis had his first R&B number one hit as well as a huge pop seller (Gene "Daddy G" Barge's magnificent sax solo likely aided its ascent).
02:36 - 4 - The disease:
Barge returned for Willis's similar follow-up, "Betty and Dupree," which also did well for him. But the turban-wearing crooner's time was growing short -- he had long suffered from ulcers prior to his 1958 death from peritonitis. Much has been made of the ironic title of his last hit, the touching "What Am I Living For," but it was no more a clue to his impending demise than its flip, the joyous "Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes." Both tracks became massive hits upon the singer's death, and his posthumous roll continued with "My Life" and a powerful "Keep A-Driving" later that year.

Colombia underground cathedral
00:00 - Colombia underground cathedral
00:11 - 1 - to the cathedral:
Some 650 feet underground in Zipaquirá, Colombia, worshippers kneel in front of an illuminated cross that stretches 16 feet in height to pray, surrounded by salty walls in a subterranean cathedral. The Catedral de Sal has multiple main sections illuminated by colorful lights: the three naves (complete with pew seating), the dome, and the Stations of the Cross. There’s also an array of sculptures and statuary throughout the cathedral and the tunnels leading to it.
00:43 - 2 - construction:
This underground holy space began its life as something very different: a salt mine, the construction of which initially began in 1815. By 1876, workers had excavated four tunnels, removing rock salt from the walls, and by 1932, generations of miners had carved out a small altar and sanctuary where workers would pray for protection each morning before heading deeper into the mine. In the early 1950s, they decided to make it into something bigger, and began to carve a massive cathedral out of the salt. It opened officially in 1953 with a huge worship space complete with walkways and a basilica dome. The workers dedicated it to the patron saint of mines.
01:30 - 3 - closing:
In 1990, however, the salt cathedral was shut down. The mine had been active throughout its construction, leaving it with structural problems that were deemed unsafe. Work on a new version began one year later, and the current cathedral opened in 1995, about 200 feet beneath the original. The design, which won an architecture contest, took four years to bring to life, and required structural improvements be made to the mine and the removal of about 250,000 tons of rock. The original cross in front of which the miners prayed back in the 1930s remained on display, but the capacity of the sacturay expanded greatly to welcome some 8,400 people. On the ground of the new cathedral, a original scultpure was also commissioned depicting the birth, life and death of Jesus.
02:24 - 4- - visitation:
Outside, the property is essentially a giant salt-themed park, complete with a climbing wall, a light show and a craft and souvenir market. Visitors can also watch a 3D movie about the history of salt mining in Colombia and check out an on-site salt mine museum. The Museo de la Salmuera is in the mine’s old processing rooms, where underground ponds were once used to separate the salt from the ore.
Most days, Monday through Saturday, tourists are also welcome to pile into the tunnels and caverns of the salt cathedral—but on Sundays, it’s still a functioning church, welcoming around 3,000 worshippers for Catholic services.

-Tommy Edwards
00:00 -Tommy Edwards
00:05 - 1 - Early Years
Thomas Jefferson Edwards was born on October 15, 1922, in Henrico County and was the son of Thomas Jefferson Edwards (1881–1958) and Buena Vista Williams Edwards. Until he was almost six years old he lived in Hanover County, where his father served as principal of the Virginia Manual Labor School for Colored Boys (later the Hanover Juvenile Correctional Center). In 1928 the family moved to Henrico County, where Edwards attended the Virginia Randolph Training School. For approximately a year beginning in October 1939 he sang and played piano on his own fifteen-minute radio show that aired twice weekly on WRNL. By 1943 Edwards had moved to New York City. Lodging at the Harlem Young Men’s Christian Association, he peddled his songs in the Tin Pan Alley district and on Broadway. By April of that year Edwards had signed with the General Amusement Corporation and soon was performing in nightclubs and lounges in the Northeast and Midwest. Neither of two tracks he recorded with the Sammy Price Orchestra in 1944 was issued.
01:15 - 2 - Professional Success
In 1946 the Deep River Boys and Bill Samuels and the Cats “N” Jammer Three covered Edwards’s amusingly risqué “That Chick’s Too Young to Fry,” and Louis Jordan’s version hit number three on the race (later the rhythm and blues) chart. Samuels’s quartet released Edwards’s raunchy “My Bicycle Tillie” that autumn. By August 1947 Edwards had formed the Tommy Edwards Trio and released one of several recordings for Top Records, some featuring his compositions. By early in 1949 he had signed a four-year deal with National Records, and his trio released a debut recording featuring his novelty tune “Up in the Alley.” The ensuing recordings, featuring Edwards’s voice and piano on blues-flavored and upbeat tunes, did not chart, and he and the label parted ways.
Resuming his solo career, Edwards signed with Signature Records in September 1950. Although that venture proved unproductive, his songwriting paid off again when Tony Bennett released the swinging “One Lie Leads to Another.” Edwards appeared on the television talent-search programs The Show Goes On and Songs for Sale, where his comic “Paging Mister Jackson” won first prize. The country music star Red Foley soon recorded the tune. Edwards then pitched “All Over Again” to MGM Records. Impressed by his voice, executives offered him a contract, and on November 30 he went into the recording studio.
When “Once There Lived a Fool” debuted early in 1951, reviewers for Billboard and several other music-industry publications noted a similarity to Nat King Cole, and some considered Edwards as imitative. In July “The Morningside of the Mountain” hit number twenty-four on Billboard‘s retail chart. By then Edwards had also recorded “It’s All in the Game.” Carl Sigman had written lyrics for “Melody in A Major,” music composed decades earlier by Charles Gates Dawes, later vice president of the United States. Louis Armstrong, Carmen Cavallaro, Sammy Kaye, and Dinah Shore had all recorded the ballad, but it was Edwards’s version that charted at number eighteen that autumn. The flip side, “All Over Again,” made the R&B chart. Trumpeted as “A New Singing Star” in a September 1951 advertisement in Variety, Edwards appeared on Perry Como’s television show and with the Woody Herman Orchestra in Montreal and Toronto. His sudden fame led a Chicago Defender columnist to proclaim in March 1952 that Edwards was the “most talked about vocalist along juke box row.”
During 1952 Edwards appeared on television, performed with the Les Paul and Mary Ford stage show, and traveled with the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Mills Brothers, and Dinah Washington in a Caravan of Stars tour that stopped in Norfolk and Richmond. “Please Mr. Sun” and “You Win Again” proved popular, but these and other of Edwards’s recordings lost out to more-successful versions by Perry Como, Doris Day, Johnny Ray, Jo Stafford, and Hank Williams. Although picked as one of the most promising newer male vocalists in February 1953, his career had stalled by May 1954. He cut but two tracks that month and, in a sign of things to come, did not return to the studio until the following January.
Edwards made no recordings for MGM between September 1955 and June 1958. Often broke, he relied on loans from friends in the music business. Edwards attributed his decline to the onset of rock and roll during the mid-1950s, but his career had faltered earlier. MGM had marketed him as a black crooner similar to the label’s “Sepia Sinatra,” Billy Eckstine, but the lushly orchestrated songs selected for him were of uneven quality. For his part, the soft-singing Edwards rarely extended a note or fashioned a crescendo, and the sweetly sung ballads became predictable. His popularity might have been prolonged, however, had his flair for lively, up-tempo compositions not been disregarded.
Edwards reportedly had only pocket change and MGM was preparing to drop him when in 1958 the label opted to reprise “It’s All in the Game” as a beat-ballad. The arrangement melded perfectly with his romantic tenor. Captivating teenagers and young adults alike, the recording spent six weeks at number one on Billboard, topped the charts in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and eventually sold 3.5 million copies. Edwards received his gold record on Your Hit Parade and performed on the Ed Sullivan Show. Dick Clark, host of American Bandstand, hailed his return as the year’s biggest comeback. During the next two years Edwards charted thirteen other songs; three made the Top 20 and two others the Top 30. He toured extensively, starred at least twice on Bandstand, and was invited on several occasions to appear on Clark’s Saturday Night Beechnut Show.
06:28 - 3 - Later Years
Despite this success, in October 1959 a reviewer from the Arizona Republic warned that “Edwards should try a jump tune sometime—and pretty soon, too … [H]e has a new MGM release, but it’s another set of wistful ballads.” Edwards last appeared on the charts a year later. In 1962 he won a victory when the New York State Supreme Court ordered MGM to disclose royalty figures. In 1965 Edwards joined Musicor Records, but a 1966 release flopped. He had once confided that rock and roll was not his style, and he became increasingly out of step with music trends. Settling at the family home, he toured U.S. military bases in West Germany and appeared in Virginia Beach and Atlanta before returning to Richmond to star in a Red Barn Theater revue. Early in 1969 he appeared in Winnipeg, where he had once played to enthusiastic audiences and received a key to the city.
In reduced circumstances and drinking heavily, Edwards died of cirrhosis of the liver on October 23, 1969, in his Henrico County home. No obituary appeared in the trade press, and his grave in the Quioccasin Baptist Church Cemetery remained unmarked until 2008.
In 2004 Universal Music Group, which then owned the MGM catalog, agreed to pay the Edwards estate about $229,000 as part of a royalties settlement by major music corporations. Regarded as a classic of the early rock and roll era, his signature song has been featured in numerous compilations, including Barry Manilow’s chart-topping 2006 album, The Greatest Songs of the Fifties. In 2012 London-based Jasmine Records and Cherry Red Records each released double-compact disc sets featuring more than fifty recordings from Edwards’s MGM catalog. In 2008, the fiftieth anniversary of his million-seller, Richmond’s mayor proclaimed October 15 as Tommy Edwards Day. The following year the Virginia Department of Historic Resources erected a historical marker in Henrico County near where Edwards had grown up.

Mars has auroras without a global magnetic field
00:00 - Mars has auroras without a global magnetic field
Earth's auroras are a glorious wonder, but our planet isn't the only place in the Solar System where these phenomena can be found.
An atmospheric glow, albeit sometimes in invisible wavelengths, has been spotted at every planet except Mercury, and even some moons of Jupiter... and even a comet. But Mars is where it gets interesting. The red planet is famous for its lost global magnetic field, an ingredient that plays a crucial role in the formation of aurora elsewhere.
00:42 - 1 - Study:
But that doesn't mean Mars is totally magnetism-free. Regions of localized magnetic fields sprout from some regions of the crust, particularly in the southern hemisphere. New analysis has confirmed that these small, local magnetic fields interact with the solar wind in interesting ways to produce Mars's discrete (or structured) ultraviolet auroras.
"We have the first detailed study looking at how solar wind conditions affect auroras on Mars," said physicist and astronomer Zachary Girazian of the University of Iowa.
"Our main finding is that inside the strong crustal field region, the aurora occurrence rate depends mostly on the orientation of the solar wind magnetic field, while outside the strong crustal field region, the occurrence rate depends mostly on the solar wind dynamic pressure."
Here on Earth, we have a pretty good handle of how auroras – borealis and australis – happen. They appear when particles from the solar wind collide with Earth's magnetosphere, and are then accelerated along the lines of the magnetic field to high latitudes, where they rain down into the upper atmosphere.
There, they interact with atmospheric particles to produce the shimmering lights that dance across the sky.
01:54 - 2 - Evidence:
Evidence suggests that the phenomena form in similar ways on other bodies. For instance, Jupiter's powerful, permanent auroras are also facilitated by the enormous planet's complex magnetic field.
But Mars's global magnetic field decayed fairly early on in the planet's history, leaving behind only patches of magnetism preserved in magnetized minerals in the crust. Ultraviolet images of Mars at night have revealed that auroras tend to form near these crustal magnetic fields, which makes sense if magnetic field lines are required for particle acceleration.
Girazian and his team's work also takes into account the solar wind conditions. They analyzed data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft, which has been collecting ultraviolet images of the red planet since 2014. It's also equipped with an instrument called the Solar Wind Ion Analyzer, which, unsurprisingly, analyzes the solar wind.
They compared data on the dynamic pressure of the solar wind, as well as the strength and angle of the interplanetary magnetic field, with ultraviolet data on the Martian auroras. They found that, outside the crustal magnetic field regions, the dynamic pressure of the solar wind plays a significant role in the detection frequency of auroras.
03:11 - 3 - Weather events:
However, the pressure of the solar wind seems to play little role in the brightness of said auroras. This suggests that space weather events, such as coronal mass ejections, where masses of charged particles are ejected from the Sun and are associated with higher solar wind pressure, may trigger Martian auroras.
Inside the crustal magnetic field regions, the orientation of the magnetic field and the solar wind seems to play a significant role in the formation of auroras on Mars. At certain orientations, the solar wind seems to be favorable to the magnetic reconnection events or particle acceleration required to produce the ultraviolet glow.
These results, the researchers said, reveal new information on how interactions with the solar wind can generate auroras on a planet stripped of its global magnetic field. This information can be used to help better understand the formation of discrete auroras on very different worlds.
"Now is a very fruitful and exciting time for researching aurora at Mars,"

Renewable energy sources are all around us
01:40 - 1. Renewable energy sources are all around us
About 80 percent of the global population lives in countries that are net-importers of fossil fuels -- that’s about 6 billion people who are dependent on fossil fuels from other countries, which makes them vulnerable to geopolitical shocks and crises.
In contrast, renewable energy sources are available in all countries, and their potential is yet to be fully harnessed. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that 90 percent of the world’s electricity can and should come from renewable energy by 2050.
Renewables offer a way out of import dependency, allowing countries to diversify their economies and protect them from the unpredictable price swings of fossil fuels, while driving inclusive economic growth, new jobs, and poverty alleviation.
02:31 - 2. Renewable energy is cheaper
Renewable energy actually is the cheapest power option in most parts of the world today. Prices for renewable energy technologies are dropping rapidly. The cost of electricity from solar power fell by 85 percent between 2010 and 2020. Costs of onshore and offshore wind energy fell by 56 percent and 48 percent respectively.
Falling prices make renewable energy more attractive all around – including to low- and middle-income countries, where most of the additional demand for new electricity will come from. With falling costs, there is a real opportunity for much of the new power supply over the coming years to be provided by low-carbon sources.
Cheap electricity from renewable sources could provide 65 percent of the world’s total electricity supply by 2030. It could decarbonize 90 percent of the power sector by 2050, massively cutting carbon emissions and helping to mitigate climate change.
Although solar and wind power costs are expected to remain higher in 2022 and 2023 then pre-pandemic levels due to general elevated commodity and freight prices, their competitiveness actually improves due to much sharper increases in gas and coal prices, says the International Energy Agency (IEA).
03:54 - 3. Renewable energy is healthier
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 99 percent of people in the world breathe air that exceeds air quality limits and threatens their health, and more than 13 million deaths around the world each year are due to avoidable environmental causes, including air pollution.
The unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide originate mainly from the burning of fossil fuels. In 2018, air pollution from fossil fuels caused $2.9 trillion in health and economic costs, about $8 billion a day.
Switching to clean sources of energy, such as wind and solar, thus helps address not only climate change but also air pollution and health.
04:40 - 4. Renewable energy creates jobs
Every dollar of investment in renewables creates three times more jobs than in the fossil fuel industry. The IEA estimates that the transition towards net-zero emissions will lead to an overall increase in energy sector jobs: while about 5 million jobs in fossil fuel production could be lost by 2030, an estimated 14 million new jobs would be created in clean energy, resulting in a net gain of 9 million jobs.
In addition, energy-related industries would require a further 16 million workers, for instance to take on new roles in manufacturing of electric vehicles and hyper-efficient appliances or in innovative technologies such as hydrogen. This means that a total of more than 30 million jobs could be created in clean energy, efficiency, and low-emissions technologies by 2030.
Ensuring a just transition, placing the needs and rights of people at the heart of the energy transition, will be paramount to make sure no one is left behind.
05:43 - 5. Renewable energy makes economic sense
About $5.9 trillion was spent on subsidizing the fossil fuel industry in 2020, including through explicit subsidies, tax breaks, and health and environmental damages that were not priced into the cost of fossil fuels.
In comparison, about $4 trillion a year needs to be invested in renewable energy until 2030 – including investments in technology and infrastructure – to allow us to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
The upfront cost can be daunting for many countries with limited resources, and many will need financial and technical support to make the transition. But investments in renewable energy will pay off. The reduction of pollution and climate impacts alone could save the world up to $4.2 trillion per year by 2030.
Moreover, efficient, reliable renewable technologies can create a system less prone to market shocks and improve resilience and energy security by diversifying power supply options.

Joey Dee & The Starliters
Joey Dee & The Starliters
1 - Biography
Joey Dee and The Starliters are an American pop music group from the 1960s. Best known for their 1961 hit recording “Peppermint Twist,” the group was founded by Joey Dee, born Joseph DiNicola in Passaic, New Jersey on 11 June 1940. With lead singer Rogers Freeman, Joey Dee and The Starliters’ first single was “Lorraine,” backed with “The Girl I Walk To School,” in 1958 on the Little label. That same year, Joey Dee recruited David Brigati for the group after meeting him during a gig at Garfield (New Jersey) High School. David and Joey would subsequently share lead vocal honors for The Starliters, with Joey ultimately becoming the primary lead singer. Another early single for the group was “Face of an Angel,” with David on lead vocals, released on Scepter Records; the flipside was “Shimmy Baby.” An album entitled The Peppermint Twisters and credited to “Joey Dee and The Starlighters” was subsequently released on Scepter as well.
Various members of The Starliters, such as vocalist Freeman and drummer Don Martin, came and went over the next few years; the most famous lineup of Joey Dee and The Starliters is considered to be Joey Dee, David Brigati, Larry Vernieri (vocals), Carlton Lattimore (organ), and Willie Davis (drums). Later members of the touring group would include Eddie Brigati (David’s brother), Gene Cornish, and Felix Cavaliere - three-quarters of The Young Rascals - as well as guitarist Jimmy James (later known as Jimi Hendrix) and Charles Neville of The Neville Brothers.
2- Discovery:
In 1960, The Starliters were discovered by agent Don Davis while performing at a Lodi, New Jersey nightclub called Oliveri’s. The group was booked at an intimate venue on 45th Street in New York City called the Peppermint Lounge for what was supposed to be a one-time weekend gig. Joey Dee and company made such a smash that they ended up becoming the house band for the Peppermint Lounge, remaining onboard for more than a year. Joey penned “Peppermint Twist,” along with producer Henry Glover, as a tribute to the lounge and the group took the song all the way to the top spot on the U.S. charts in late 1961. By this time the group had signed with Roulette Records. The Lounge became world famous during The Starliters’ tenure, attracting celebrities such as Jackie Kennedy, Truman Capote, and Judy Garland.
3- success:
One night in 1961, a trio of pretty teenagers were waiting on line outside the club hoping to be allowed inside. Dressed in matching brightly colored dresses, they looked like professional entertainers (which in fact they were) and in a case of mistaken identity, thinking they were the dancers he’d hired, the manager of the Peppermint Lounge ushered the girls - Ronnie and Estelle Bennett and their cousin, Nedra Talley - up to the stage and told them to dance. The Ronettes spent the rest of that night dancing and singing along with Joey Dee and The Starliters, and the reaction from the group and the crowd was so positive that the club manager, having realized his error, offered the girls a job on the spot. Every night, The Ronettes would dance and perform along with The Starliters at the Peppermint Lounge, even traveling with them to the club’s Miami, Florida location in early 1962.
4- movie:
Also in 1961, Joey Dee and The Starliters filmed the movie Hey, Let’s Twist, starring Jo Ann Campbell and Teddy Randazzo, for Paramount Pictures. Hey, Let’s Twist was a fictional portrait of Joey Dee (Randazzo and Dino DiLuca played the parts of Joey’s brother and father, respectively) and the Peppermint Lounge; its release capitalized on the current Twist craze and brought the once-obscure Lounge into the forefront. The movie and soundtrack album did their part in making the Peppermint Lounge a world-famous venue. Hit singles spawned from Hey, Let’s Twist were the title track and “Shout - Part I,” which became the group’s second-biggest selling record. Other albums released during this time period were Doin’ The Twist At The Peppermint Lounge, which was recorded live at the venue, and All The World’s Twistin’ With Joey Dee & The Starliters.
In 1962, Joey Dee and The Starliters starred in their second motion picture, Two Tickets to Paris, along with Gary Crosby, Jeri Lynne Fraser and Kay Medford. One of the songs from this film, “What Kind Of Love Is This,” penned by Johnny Nash, was released in September of that year and became a Top Twenty hit. In December of 1962, the original Starliters did their final recording session as a group, turning out “Help Me Pick Up the Pieces,” also composed by Nash, and “Baby, You’re Driving Me Crazy,” written by Joey Dee and Henry Glover. In 1963, Joey Dee recorded an album entitled Dance, Dance, Dance, with The Ronettes as his backup group. In spring of that year, Roulette released the track “Hot Pastrami with Mashed Potatoes,” from the previously issued live album, as a two-part single; the record made the U.S. Top Forty. The label later released “Ya Ya” and “Fannie Mae” from the same album. In November of ‘63, The Starliters toured Europe with The Beatles as their opening act. During 1964, Joey Dee toured with various Starliters including Cornish, Cavaliere, and Eddie Brigati. Other group members at different times included Hendrix, Neville, drummer Jimmy Mayes and singer Tommy Davis.
Joey Dee continued to record and issue solo recordings from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, as well a song he wrote with original Starliters David Brigati and Larry Vernieri entitled “How Can I Forget” in the late 1960s which was released under the name Joey Dee and The New Starliters. During the 1980s, Joey lived for a short time in Florida before moving back to New York, to The Bronx. He continued to travel and make personal appearances with various Starliters.
5- Currently:
These days, Joey Dee and The Starliters is comprised of Joey with Bob Valli (brother of Frankie Valli) and original Starliter David Brigati. The group tours and plays at various venues from Connecticut to New Jersey to Florida to Las Vegas, doing well over a hundred concerts per year. In 2001, the group was featured on a PBS special, Rock, Rhythm and Doo-Wop, and in 2005 they appeared on the Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy. Joey Dee resides in Florida, while Brigati and Valli remain Jersey boys.

Greatest Fighter Pilots in Aviation History
00:00 - Greatest Fighter Pilots in Aviation History
00:08 - 1 - Top Gan:
A critical failure but a popular success, the movie “Top Gun” illustrates what seems to be an undeniable truth, fighter pilots are a separate breed. They are exceedingly driven risk-takers, with athletic prowess and quick intelligence. Often, they are Tom Cruise cocky.
00:29 - 2- The best:
And they win wars reviewed various historical sources to determine who were the greatest fighter pilots of all, considering only the top ace for each country in each war. Our ranking is based on the number of “kills” or “victories” – the recorded number of aircraft shot down, and an ace is a pilot who achieves at least five kills in one day.
Because these numbers were sometimes exaggerated by either the pilots or their hero-worshippers, or otherwise were undocumented, we relied exclusively on official estimates from government sources.
01:04 - 3 - ranking pilots:
Of the 25 fighter pilots in this ranking, each had a distinctive style of attack – and often a distinctive look. Manfred von Richthofen, the legendary “Red Baron,” for instance, had the planes in his fighter wing painted in bright colors, making his team famous as “the Flying Circus.”
Some of the aces here returned to the sky undaunted after being shot down, and others managed to avoid getting hit at all in their hundreds of missions. Six of them died in the war, including the Red Baron. Most of the surviving aces could not stay out of the sky after their wars ended. Seven continued their military careers and four flew planes for a living – more, including those that continued to fly after retiring from the military. Tragically, seven out of the 25 died in plane crashes after their war service.

Jimmy Jones
00:00 - Jimmy Jones
00:04 - 1 - Start:
Jimmy Jones, who had spent a long apprenticeship singing in R&B vocal harmony groups, became a rock 'n' roll star in the early 1960s singing "Handy Man" and other hits with a dramatic and piercingly high falsetto.
When Jimmy was around twelve years old he moved from his native Birmingham, Alabama, to New York City. At that time he was already an accomplished tap dancer, but singing was equally important to him. Role models were Louis Jordan and the Ink Spots and later especially Clyde McPhatter and Jackie Wilson. Early in 1955 he joined a vocal group, the Sparks of Rhythm (originally the Berliners), who landed a recording contract with Apollo Records in July 1955. Four songs were recorded at their first session, three of them led by Jimmy. When the two resulting singles went nowhere, Jones left the Sparks of Rhythm to form his own group, the Savoys, soon renamed the Pretenders. Their first session was for Herman Lubinsky's Savoy label (for which they were named), on February 2, 1956 and yielded the single "Say You're Mine"/"You" (Savoy 1188). By coincidence, this was one day after the Sparks Of Rhythm, now without Jimmy, recorded four - then unissued - songs for Apollo, among them Jones's composition "Handy Man" (with bass Andrew Barksdale on lead).
01:24 - 2 - Beginning of success:
Jimmy led the Pretenders on a series of doowop sides for a number of New York based labels : Savoy, Rama, Whirlin' Disc, Arrow, Holiday, Central and Apt, but nothing came close to denting the charts. In 1959 he was getting tired of groups ("too much responsibility") and decided to go it alone. He started doing demonstration records at Roosevelt Music, for songwriters like Otis Blackwell, Charlie Stephenson and Luther Dixon. For every demo he did, Jimmy received $ 25. A demo of his own "Handy Man" was heard by Otis Blackwell, who helped him rework the song. Jones then made a new demo, which Blackwell took to publisher Moe Gale of Shalimar Music. On June 17, 1959, Jimmy made a professional recording of "Handy Man" at Regent Sound Studio in NYC, with Otis Blackwell handling the whistling after the flute player didn't show up for the session. Moe Gale sold the tapes to MGM in August. "Handy Man" was released on September 7, on MGM's Cub subsidiary, but it didn't enter the Billboard charts until the last week of 1959. From that point there was no stopping the record and in February 1960 it peaked at # 2 pop and # 3 R&B.
02:41 - 3 - shows and end of career:
Following this success, everyone came out of the woodwork. Apollo finally released "Handy Man" by the Sparks of Rhythm, which they had kept in the can since 1956. Their slow doowop version sounded outdated in 1960. Savoy reissued "Say You're Mine" with overdubs, while Roulette and ABC-Paramount dug up old Pretenders tracks and reissued them as by Jimmy Jones.
The follow-up to "Handy Man" was "Good Timin'", which went to # 3 pop / # 8 R&B in the US and all the way to # 1 in the UK (where "Handy Man" had peaked at # 3). Jimmy flew over to the UK in the autumn of 1960 for a successful tour of the British Isles. In general, his records sold better in the UK than in his home country, where only "That's When I Cried" (# 83 pop, 1960) and "I Told You So" (# 85 pop, 1961) made any chart impact after "Good Timin'". Lack of promotion on the part of MGM seemed largely responsible for Jimmy's decline in the USA. Jones left MGM in 1962 and subsequently recorded for Ro-Jac, Vee-Jay, Roulette, Parkway and Bell, but the glory days were over. By the late 60s, the music industry had changed beyond recognition from the days that Jimmy had first stepped into a recording studio and although he was still in his prime, the heavy workload endured over the past decade had taken its toll. A period away from the limelight ensued, although Jimmy did come out of premature retirement in the early seventies to launch his own Jenjillus label, which is still in business today. Jones claims that he never received any royalties from MGM as a singer. "The only thing I got paid for was as a writer. Over the years I've done pretty good from 'Handy Man' alone". The song has been recorded by at least 25 artists and charted in versions by Del Shannon (# 22, 1964) and James Taylor (# 4, 1977). Add to that the income from radio airplay and Jimmy Jones hasn't been doing too bad these last few decades.

Subsea internet cables could help detect earthquakes
00:00 - Subsea internet cables could help detect earthquakes
00:14 - 1- Study:
Internet cables that crisscross the sea-floor could be use to detect earthquakes and tsunamis or monitor how climate change alters ocean currents.
These telecoms cables could be used as a giant array of deep-sea scientific sensors, the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and its partners say.
Scientists tested the technique on an optical-fibre link between the UK and Canada.
The research is published in Science Magazine.
Because installing permanent sensors to monitor the ocean floor is very costly, only a few exist globally, the scientists say.
"70% of the Earth's surface is water but all the seismic stations are on land, because it is too difficult and expensive to install permanent sensors on the seafloor" Dr Giuseppe Marra of the NPL told the BBC.
01:07 - 2 - explanation of scientists:
According to Dr Marra vibrations, pressure and temperature changes affect, by a very small amount, the speed of light as it travels through the cable which extremely sensitive instruments can then detect.
The researchers said they had detected earthquakes and "ocean signals", such as waves and currents, using a 5,860km EXA Infrastructure optical-fibre link between Southport, Lancashire, and Halifax, Canada.
The scientists were able to use individual spans of cable between repeaters - devices that help boost the signal - as separate sensors.
"If we apply this technique to a large number of cables", Dr Mara said, "we could transform this underwater infrastructure into a giant array of detectors for earthquakes, ocean currents and more.
"Extending the seismic network from land to the seafloor will improve our understanding of the internal structure of the Earth and its dynamic behaviour" he added.
Cable-based sensors could identify the "epicentral area" of an earthquake in the same way as land-based seismometers, the researchers suggest.
And the technique opened other possibilities, such as monitoring deep-water currents for changes caused by global warming.
There is also the untested possibility of using cables to monitor how climate change alters sea-floor temperatures.
Technology-giant Google was involved in the research as well as the University of Edinburgh, the British Geological Survey, and the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica, in Italy.
Brian Baptie, head of the Earth seismology team for the British Geological Survey, said the research could transform scientists' ability to make measurements over vast areas of Earth's surface where it was very difficult to use conventional technologies.
"It creates an amazing opportunity to observe earthquakes in the middle of oceans at close range as well as the tantalising possibility of measuring other natural phenomena like submarine volcanic eruptions and tsunami in future," he said.

00:00 - Oceans are warmer and more acidic
00:05 - 1 - Affirmation:
"It is just a matter of time before we see another warmest year on record," Taalas said.
The world's oceans in 2021 grew to their warmest and most acidic levels on record, while melting ice sheets helped push sea levels to new heights, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Wednesday.
Oceans saw the most striking extremes as the WMO detailed a range of turmoil wrought by climate change in its annual "State of the Global Climate" report.
Our climate is changing before our eyes. The heat trapped by human-induced greenhouse gases will warm the planet for many generations to come," said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas in a statement.
00:49 - 2 - Evaluation:
The WMO report follows on the latest United Nations climate assessment, which warned that humanity must drastically cut its greenhouse gas emissions or face increasingly catastrophic changes to the world's climate.
The levels of climate-warming carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere in 2021 surpassed previous records, the WMO said.
Globally, the average temperature last year was 1.11 degrees Celsius above the preindustrial average - as the world inches closer to the 1.5 C threshold beyond which the effects of warming are expected to become drastic.
Last year's temperatures were tempered slightly compared to 2020 because of the cooling effects of La Nina in the Pacific, though the year was still among the top seven hottest years on record.
"It is just a matter of time before we see another warmest year on record," Taalas said.
Oceans bear much of the brunt of the warming and emissions. The bodies of water absorb around 90% of the Earth's accumulated heat and 23% of the carbon dioxide emissions from human activity.
The ocean has warmed markedly faster in the last 20 years, hitting a new high in 2021, and is expected to become even warmer, the report said. That change would likely take centuries or millennia to reverse, it noted.
02:09 - 3 - Acidity of the seas:
The ocean is also now its most acidic in at least 26,000 years as it absorbs and reacts with more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Sea level has risen 4.5 centimeters (1.8 inches) in the last decade, with the annual increase from 2013 to 2021 more than double what it was from 1993 to 2002.
The WMO also listed individual extreme heatwaves, wildfires, floods and other climate linked disasters around the world, noting reports of more than $100 billion in damages.
The continental United States saw its hottest-ever summer, with hundreds of heat-related deaths recorded. The Dixie fire burned 3,900 square kilometers (1,500 square miles), making it California's largest ever wildfire.

The clovers
00:00 - The clovers
00:04 - 1 - Beginning and origin:
The Clovers occupy an exalted place in the history of R&B, if not in the minds of many listeners, other than hard-core devotees of the music's history -- the Drifters tend to eclipse them, by virtue of their longer history and the string of hits that the later incarnation of that group had during the 1960s. The truth is that the Clovers not only started earlier than any other act on Atlantic, but they also scored more hits in their six years there than any other R&B act in the label's history.
The group's origins, like those of so many R&B vocal outfits, goes back to the members' middle teenage years. Tenor/baritone Harold "Hal" Lucas, tenor Billy Shelton, and bass Robert Woods were students at Armstrong High School in Washington, D.C., during the mid-'40s when they formed a trio led by Lucas, who also came up with the name the Clovers. A fourth member, John "Buddy" Bailey, another tenor, joined up and eventually became their lead singer, while Lucas started singing baritone. Their early sound was influenced by the likes of such professional outfits of the era as the Orioles and the Ravens.
01:07 - 2 - History:
The history of R&B isn't easily contained within the boundaries of the post-World War II era, when it began gathering popularity. The Clovers took shape over the next few years, as Woods departed to be replaced by Matthew McQuater, and Shelton was succeeded by Harold Winley, and a fifth member, in the guise of guitarist Bill Harris, joined in 1949. During these years, their repertory was largely drawn from the records and set lists of the Orioles and the Ravens, but as the 1950s dawned, the group had begun to embrace a harder, edgier brand of R&B, with less restraint in their embellishments. They were discovered while playing a club in Washington by Baltimore-based entrepreneur Lou Krefetz, who got them onto a small label called Rainbow Records, where they made their debut with "Yes Sir, That's My Baby." It was Ahmet Ertegun, the founder of the then new label, who interceded and, after getting the group onto his label, started feeding them rougher, more rhythm-oriented material, including the first song Ertegun ever wrote, "Don't You Know I Love You" -- according to Nick Tosches, that single was also the first record by an R&B quartet to incorporate a saxophone solo (by Frank Culley) into its structure; the record became a number one R&B hit during the summer of 1951 and heralded a new era in popular music, serving as the template for a decade of R&B hits. Indeed, there are those who identify that record as the very first identifiable rock & roll single.
The group was put in the hands of producer/songwriter Jesse Stone (aka Charles Calhoun), who, with Ertegun, directed them further into this new territory that they suddenly found themselves trailblazing. In April of 1952, "One Mint Julep" became a number two single, and they followed that up in July with "Ting-a-Ling," which also got to number two. The Clovers' fortunes continued until Bailey was drafted during the summer of 1952, and the group didn't see any significant success again until the summer of 1953 when "Good Lovin'" charted at number two with Charlie White, late of Billy Ward's group the Dominoes. They charted again at number three in the spring of 1954 with "Lovey Dovey," and then Billy Mitchell came in as lead singer for "Your Cash Ain't Nothin' but Trash." That single was only a relatively modest hit during the summer of 1954, but it was useful on a whole different level, getting the group a berth in the pioneering rock & roll/R&B short feature Rock 'n' Roll Revue. Beginning in 1955, with Bailey's discharge from the army, he and Mitchell served as joint lead singers in the group.
03:38 - 3 - Style:
The Clovers switched to a ballad style in 1955 with the release of "Blue Velvet," which was a modest success at number 14 on the R&B listings. Their next single, "Devil or Angel," the latter an "over-the-transom" submission by an amateur songwriter named Blanche Carter, got to number three, but that marked the end of their run of hits on Atlantic. Ironically, it was those last two singles -- which were really the least representative of their sound of any of their hits -- became their best known singles, getting the widest airplay, though their version of "Devil or Angel" was later eclipsed by Bobby Vee's recording. Following its release, as the rock & roll boom solidified around white performers, guitar-based acts, and novelty tunes, the Clovers experienced a downturn in their fortunes. They ceased charting singles and after two more years of attempts at reviving their sales, Atlantic released the bluesy sleeper classic "Down in the Alley" (1957), one of the raunchiest songs of its period ever aimed at a mainstream audience, which even had the temerity to project its lustful observations slowly.
Rather than retreat, the act, with the encouragement of their manager, Lou Krefetz, grew bolder. He organized a new label, Poplar Records, and had the Clovers record an entire LP, an extraordinary opportunity for a group that wasn't riding high on the charts at the time -- even the Drifters had never recorded an actual LP at the time, their albums being compilations of previously recorded singles. The group scored with the LP and its accompanying single, "Pennies From Heaven," and it looked as though they might pull out of their ongoing commercial slump. Fate then took a hand as Krefetz was offered the opportunity to become the head of sales for United Artists Records, a newly organized label that had the money of one of the top studios in Hollywood behind them. The manager accepted the offer and was able to fold the Clovers, along with their recordings for Poplar, into the larger company. Krefetz next linked the group up with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, the result being the biggest pop hit in the group's history, in the form of "Love Potion No. 9," sung by Billy Mitchell, and peaked at number 23 (which, oddly enough, was the same slot it occupied on the R&B charts).
05:48 - 4 - end of the band:
Alas, this was to be the group's last success. They never found another producer as effective as Leiber and Stoller, much less Ertegun or Stone, and even when they returned to work with Stone, they were unable to find a way back to the charts; even re-recording their old hits, such as "One Mint Julep," failed to attract any listeners. By 1961, the group had parted company with United Artists, and soon they were grasping at straws commercially, spiraling down in a series of contracts with ever smaller and weaker labels, losing Matthew McQuater in the process. The group splintered, with Billy Mitchell and Harold Lucas reorganizing the lineup with a pair of members from another group, the Bachelors, James "Toy" Walton and Robert Russell. They made a brief return to Atlantic in 1961 without any resulting rebound in sales, and after that, the group's situation became complicated by the existence of rival incarnations -- along with Mitchell's outfit was a group called (at times) "the Fabulous Clovers," led by Bailey. Roosevelt "Tippie" Hubbard succeeded Mitchell, leading a quartet called "Tippie and the Clovers," who cut sides for Leiber and Stoller's Tiger label, among them "Bossa Nova Baby," a number that was even an embarrassment to Elvis Presley when he did it.
By the dawn of the rock & roll revival at the turn of the 1960s into the 1970s, the Clovers' situation had become at least as complicated as that of the Drifters, with multiple groups claiming the name in various performing venues and recording situations. None of it really mattered by then, as the recordings had assumed a life of their own, separate from any performances by survivors or pretenders. The group was honored by the Rhythm-and-Blues Foundation in 1988 with a Pioneer Award, given to surviving members Bailey, McQuater, Lucas, and Winley, and thanks to the CD boom, their classic Atlantic sides have been more readily available since the 1990s than they've been at any time since the mid-'50s, Rhino Records keeping two different hits compilations in print while Collectables Records has reissued their two Atlantic LPs on a single CD.

World's first temple
00:00 - World's first temple
00:04 - 1 - The discovery:
Six miles from Urfa, an ancient city in southeastern Turkey, Klaus Schmidt has made one of the most startling archaeological discoveries of our time: massive carved stones about 11,000 years old, crafted and arranged by prehistoric people who had not yet developed metal tools or even pottery. The megaliths predate Stonehenge by some 6,000 years. The place is called Gobekli Tepe, and Schmidt, a German archaeologist who has been working here more than a decade, is convinced it's the site of the world's oldest temple.
"Guten Morgen," he says at 5:20 a.m. when his van picks me up at my hotel in Urfa. Thirty minutes later, the van reaches the foot of a grassy hill and parks next to strands of barbed wire. We follow a knot of workmen up the hill to rectangular pits shaded by a corrugated steel roof—the main excavation site. In the pits, standing stones, or pillars, are arranged in circles. Beyond, on the hillside, are four other rings of partially excavated pillars. Each ring has a roughly similar layout: in the center are two large stone T-shaped pillars encircled by slightly smaller stones facing inward. The tallest pillars tower 16 feet and, Schmidt says, weigh between seven and ten tons. As we walk among them, I see that some are blank, while others are elaborately carved: foxes, lions, scorpions and vultures abound, twisting and crawling on the pillars' broad sides.
01:39 - 2 - Sacred place for its people:
Schmidt points to the great stone rings, one of them 65 feet across. "This is the first human-built holy place," he says.
From this perch 1,000 feet above the valley, we can see to the horizon in nearly every direction. Schmidt, 53, asks me to imagine what the landscape would have looked like 11,000 years ago, before centuries of intensive farming and settlement turned it into the nearly featureless brown expanse it is today.
Prehistoric people would have gazed upon herds of gazelle and other wild animals; gently flowing rivers, which attracted migrating geese and ducks; fruit and nut trees; and rippling fields of wild barley and wild wheat varieties such as emmer and einkorn. "This area was like a paradise," says Schmidt, a member of the German Archaeological Institute. Indeed, Gobekli Tepe sits at the northern edge of the Fertile Crescent—an arc of mild climate and arable land from the Persian Gulf to present-day Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and Egypt—and would have attracted hunter-gatherers from Africa and the Levant. And partly because Schmidt has found no evidence that people permanently resided on the summit of Gobekli Tepe itself, he believes this was a place of worship on an unprecedented scale—humanity's first "cathedral on a hill."
With the sun higher in the sky, Schmidt ties a white scarf around his balding head, turban-style, and deftly picks his way down the hill among the relics. In rapid-fire German he explains that he has mapped the entire summit using ground-penetrating radar and geomagnetic surveys, charting where at least 16 other megalith rings remain buried across 22 acres. The one-acre excavation covers less than 5 percent of the site. He says archaeologists could dig here for another 50 years and barely scratch the surface.
03:33 - 3 - First time it was examined:
Gobekli Tepe was first examined—and dismissed—by University of Chicago and Istanbul University anthropologists in the 1960s. As part of a sweeping survey of the region, they visited the hill, saw some broken slabs of limestone and assumed the mound was nothing more than an abandoned medieval cemetery. In 1994, Schmidt was working on his own survey of prehistoric sites in the region. After reading a brief mention of the stone-littered hilltop in the University of Chicago researchers' report, he decided to go there himself. From the moment he first saw it, he knew the place was extraordinary.
Unlike the stark plateaus nearby, Gobekli Tepe (the name means "belly hill" in Turkish) has a gently rounded top that rises 50 feet above the surrounding landscape. To Schmidt's eye, the shape stood out. "Only man could have created something like this," he says. "It was clear right away this was a gigantic Stone Age site." The broken pieces of limestone that earlier surveyors had mistaken for gravestones suddenly took on a different meaning.
Schmidt returned a year later with five colleagues and they uncovered the first megaliths, a few buried so close to the surface they were scarred by plows. As the archaeologists dug deeper, they unearthed pillars arranged in circles. Schmidt's team, however, found none of the telltale signs of a settlement: no cooking hearths, houses or trash pits, and none of the clay fertility figurines that litter nearby sites of about the same age. The archaeologists did find evidence of tool use, including stone hammers and blades. And because those artifacts closely resemble others from nearby sites previously carbon-dated to about 9000 B.C., Schmidt and co-workers estimate that Gobekli Tepe's stone structures are the same age. Limited carbon dating undertaken by Schmidt at the site confirms this assessment.
The way Schmidt sees it, Gobekli Tepe's sloping, rocky ground is a stonecutter's dream. Even without metal chisels or hammers, prehistoric masons wielding flint tools could have chipped away at softer limestone outcrops, shaping them into pillars on the spot before carrying them a few hundred yards to the summit and lifting them upright. Then, Schmidt says, once the stone rings were finished, the ancient builders covered them over with dirt. Eventually, they placed another ring nearby or on top of the old one. Over centuries, these layers created the hilltop.
Today, Schmidt oversees a team of more than a dozen German archaeologists, 50 local laborers and a steady stream of enthusiastic students. He typically excavates at the site for two months in the spring and two in the fall. (Summer temperatures reach 115 degrees, too hot to dig; in the winter the area is deluged by rain.) In 1995, he bought a traditional Ottoman house with a courtyard in Urfa, a city of nearly a half-million people, to use as a base of operations.

Chubby Checker
00:00 - Chubby Checker
Artist Biography by Jason Ankeny
00:10 - 1 - The Beginning:
Chubby Checker was the unrivaled king of the rock & roll dance craze; although most of the dances his records promoted -- the Pony, "the Fly," and the Hucklebuck, to cite just three -- have long since faded into obscurity, his most famous hit, "The Twist," remains the yardstick against which all subsequent dancefloor phenomena are measured. Born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941, in Spring Gulley, South Carolina, he worked in a local poultry shop while in high school, and while on the job often entertained customers by singing and cracking jokes. His workplace antics helped win an audition with the local Cameo-Parkway label, who signed the fledgling singer in 1959; at the suggestion of no less than Dick Clark's wife, the portly youth was re-christened Chubby Checker, the name a sly reference to Fats Domino.
01:02 - 2 - success:
Checker's first single, "The Class," showcased his skills as an impressionist; while the record became a minor novelty hit, none of its immediate follow-ups were successful. In 1960, however, he recorded "The Twist," a cover of a 1958 Hank Ballard & the Midnighters B-side; Checker's rendition de-emphasized the original's overtly sexual overtones, focusing instead on the song's happy-go-lucky charms. The single rocketed to number one during the autumn of 1960, remaining on the charts for four months; some time after it dropped off, it slowly returned to prominence, and in late 1961 it hit number one again; the only record ever to enjoy two stays at the top more than a year apart. After "The Twist" first made Checker a superstar, he returned to the top in 1961 with "Do the Pony"; that same year, he also reached the Top Ten with "Let's Twist Again," which assured the dance's passage from novelty to institution.
02:04 - 3 - the continuity:
In addition to 1961's "The Fly," Checker's other Top Ten hits included three 1962 smashes: "Slow Twistin'," "Limbo Rock," and "Popeye the Hitchhiker." He even starred in a pair of feature films, Twist Around the Clock and Don't Knock the Twist. In total, Checker notched 32 chart hits before the bubble burst in 1966; as interest in dance novelties dwindled, he briefly turned to folk music, and became a regular on the nightclub circuit. From the 1970s onward, he was a staple of oldies revival tours; in 1982, more than a decade after his last studio LP, he signed with MCA and issued the disco-inspired The Change Has Come, scoring a pair of minor hits with the singles "Running" and "Harder Than Diamond." In 1988, Checker returned to the Top 40 for the first time in a quarter century when he appeared on the Fat Boys' rap rendition of "The Twist," and he continued touring regularly throughout the decade to follow.

Bright spots of the sun
00:00 - Bright spots of the sun
Sunspots aren't the only speckles decorating the dynamic face of our Sun. Solar physicists have made a close study of tiny, fleeting speckles of brightness that emerge and fade in less than a minute on average, in regions where loops of plasma rise from the solar surface.
00:20 - 1 - Your name:
They're named 'solar dots'. The fleeting phenomenon, analysis has revealed, is likely the result of magnetic shenanigans – which wouldn't be hugely surprising, given that magnetic field changes play a huge role in all sorts of wacky solar phenomena.
Nevertheless, the finding suggests the Sun is even more complex than we knew; analysis of these sun freckles could improve our understanding of the role of the magnetic field on solar dynamics, and the magnetic field itself.
The fascinating dots were, ahem, spotted in images from the joint NASA-ESA Solar Orbiter, which launched in 2020 when the Sun had just entered a new cycle, and was growing more active.
On 20 May 2020, the spacecraft imaged some regions of magnetic flux, with magnetic loops arcing up from the solar photosphere.
The solar magnetic field is a complicated beast. It's generated by a dynamo process in the solar interior – the motion of a convecting, conducting fluid that generates electric and magnetic fields. We don't know exactly how it works, but the resulting magnetic field lines are numerous, dynamic, and complex.
Sunspots, for example, are regions where magnetic fields are particularly strong, and solar flares and coronal mass ejections are produced by magnetic field lines snapping and reconnecting.
01:46 - 2 - The cycles:
The 11-year solar cycles mentioned earlier are driven by the magnetic field reversal that takes place every 11 years, when the solar magnetic poles switch places.
Led by astrophysicist Sanjiv Tiwari of the Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory, a team of scientists took a closer look at one of these magnetic flux regions, imaged in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths. They found tiny, round specks of brightness almost hidden in the solar plasma.
Image processing drew the dots into greater prominence, allowing the team to study them in detail. Over the course of about an hour, they were able to observe and characterize around 170 dots.
Overall, on average, the dots were around 675 kilometers (420 miles) in diameter (hey, that's small for the Sun), were around 30 percent brighter than the surrounding plasma, and lasted, on average, just 50 seconds before disappearing again. About half the dots remained isolated for the duration of their brief lives, while the remainder split into two, merged with other dots, or developed explosive loops or jets.
Comparison with data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory showing the Sun's magnetic field revealed that the dots appeared in the entire field of view covered by Solar Orbiter, but were more densely clustered in more magnetically active regions, especially the bigger and brighter dots.
03:15 - 3 - Causes:
The next step was to try and figure out what causes the speckles. This required the use of software that simulates the magnetohydrodynamics of the solar atmosphere, Bifrost.
This simulation revealed that the dots may be moments of magnetic reconnection between magnetic field lines emerging from the solar surface, and magnetic field lines descending into it.
Since magnetic reconnection in the solar atmosphere produces loops, this would explain why many of the dots stretch into an extended loop during their evolution.
However, some of the dots did not appear in regions with tangled magnetic fields, which suggests there might be multiple formation pathways for these mysterious features. One possible explanation, the team said, is the propagation of magnetoacoustic waves in the solar plasma, which could produce shocks that result in dots.
But the mystery is far from resolved. The dots imaged by Solar Orbiter aren't the only dots seen on the Sun, and they have been observed in different wavelengths and different magnetic environments.
Future research, the team said, could help to resolve these open questions, bringing us closer to truly understanding our fascinating star.

The bobbettes
00:00 - The bobbettes
00:03 - 1 - Origin group:
The Bobbettes were the first all-female R&B group to have a major pop hit record. Their "Mr. Lee" beat the Chantels "He's Gone" to the charts by one month and outranked it in the US pop charts. All of the original members were born in North Carolina, but most of them lived in New York since age 2 or 3. The group came from the Lower East Side of Manhattan and was originally an octet called The Harlem Queens, who began doing local amateur nights in 1955. Their manager, James Dailey, took them to Atlantic Records who wanted changes to both line-up and name. The membership settled down to Laura Webb (1943-2001), Reather Dixon (1945), Helen Gathers (1944), Emma Pought (1944) and her sister Jannie Pought (1945-1980, stabbed to death by a total stranger in New Jersey).
The girls went into the Atlantic studio on February 28, 1957, to record four of their own songs (a huge achievement, given their ages), including "Mr. Lee", a ditty about a fifth-grade teacher that they did not exactly like. Jerry Wexler and Ahmet Ertegun suggested a rewrite of the song to make Mr. Lee (and the recording) more sympathetic. "He's the four-eyed-est teacher we ever did see" was changed into "He's the handsomest teacher I ever did see". Released in June 1957, "Mr. Lee" had a slow start, but eventually went to # 6 on the pop charts and # 1 (for four weeks) on the R&B charts. Their first tour took them across 49 states, mostly one-nighters.
01:43 - 2 - Success of the girls:
Despite their initial success and the excitement of their performances, the Bobbettes' next five releases sold poorly and Atlantic lost interest. At a final 1959 session, the girls recorded "I Shot Mr. Lee", in which they finally sang what they really thought about their former teacher, but Atlantic refused to release it. The company did release the girls from their contract and they went looking for a new label. At Triple-X, they started working with Teddy Vann, who produced a new version of "I Shot Mr. Lee", which peaked at # 52 in mid-1960. Atlantic took them to court, but lost, then issued the version they had in the can, but lost this sales battle too. For the next Triple-X 45, Teddy Vann arranged their re-workings of Billy Ward and the Dominoes' "Have Mercy Baby" and Hank Ballard's "Work With Me Annie" (as "Dance With Me, Georgie)". Both sides charted (# 66 and # 95, respectively), but in spite of a rare run of three chart successes from just two singles on Triple-X, the girls found themselves on the Galliant label in the fall of 1960. They next moved to George Goldner's Gone and End labels, scoring their last chart entry with "I Don't Like It Like That" (# 72, September 1961, an answer to Chris Kenner's hit "I Like It Like That"), which strangely appeared on both End 1095 and Gone 5112.
Actually, they did score a second Top 10 hit early in 1963, but the Bobbettes didn't get credit for singing background on Johnny Thunder's "Loop De Loop" (# 4), which was produced and co-written by Teddy Vann. The girls kept on recording until 1966, for King, Jubilee, Diamond and RCA, but their records failed to sell in any large quantities. However, the group remained intact (minus Helen Gathers, who quit around 1965) and never stopped performing. In the 1970s there were three releases on the Mayhew label. The current line-up still inc ludes two original members, Reather Dixon Turner and Emma Pought, along with two newer members, Pam McMullen and Debbie Thompson.* Recently they have performed at Viva Las Vegas (2003) and Hemsby (May 2004).
* Tony Rounce writes in his sleeve notes for the new CD "King Rock 'n' Roll, Vol. 2" (Ace 1051) : "Still featuring three of their five original members...", which is not correct. The version of "Dance With Me Georgie" on that CD is the Triple-X version, overdubbed with additional percussion and handclaps.
