Block Island Seabass over Spinach
November 6th, 2021
“I Love My Own Cooking Show”
Block Island Seabass over Sautéed Spinach and Garlic in equal amounts of KerryGold Butter and California Olive Oil, thickened with Better than Bullion and Flour. Then served over Basmati Brown Rice. It could have been a little thicker. I’ll have to work on that! Oh, and let’s not forget the Fresh Ground Black Pepper and Himalayan Pink Salt. Hope you guys enjoy!!

Blackfish Extravaganza
Fished October 15, 2021 off Fishers Island. Great trip, lots of laughs! Finally got to fish with Mike Higgins again, as he’s been laid up with blood clots. I had the crew on the edge of their seat with a couple Coast Guard Stories. They wanted me to tell more, but I told them I was there to fish and not tell stories. They were disappointed, but got over it. I figure I’ll limit one Coast Guard Story to each fishing trip. Take care, and thanks for reviewing. Tom

October 2, 2021. Self-guided tour from Amidships Starboard Side walking forward towards the Bow. Looking forward we have a good view of the Anchor Winch, Catpaw and Capstan. Not sure if it’s visible on the video, but the Jack Flag should be forward on the Bowsprit or Foremast

October 2, 2021 USCGC Eagle Thames River Connecticut
October 2, 2021. We had booked a 6:30 pm ferry leaving New London Connecticut enroute Orient Point. Being way ahead of schedule, we decided to see if we could catch an earlier ferry, which was not to be. The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle was tied up on the slip adjacent the ferry terminal, so with time to kill, I took a stroll down to see if I could get close enough to get a good look at her. To my surprise, there was an open gate which allowed the public entry to the pier. After speaking with Boatswains Mate 2nd Class Thompson, he informed me that I was able to do a self guided tour till 4 pm. When a Coast Guard Apprentice/SA reports aboard his ship for the first time, he would show his orders to the Quartermaster of the Watch. From there he would make his way up the gangway, turn to his left and salute the Ensign/American Flag. After rendering a hand salute to Old Glory, he would turn towards the bridge, salute the Officer of the Deck/OOD and ask permission to come aboard! At least that’s the way I remember it, it’s been over 40 years. I hope you enjoyed the videos of USCGC Eagle, formally the Horst Wessel. Semper Paratus BM2 Tommy May

USCGC Eagle Part Two
USCGC Eagle Starboard Aft Motor Lifeboat. The Eagles motorize lifeboat is at the rail suspended by quadrantal davits. Wire rope connecting both davits has “Monkey Lines” attached and complete with figure eight knots to allow crewmembers the ability to reduce weight in the boat during raising and lowering. These are the ships working boats. They are often used to ferry crewman to the pier, before the ship arrives so as to retrieve morning lines. Other functions would be to board vessels, or maintain AIDS to Navigation. It would not be uncommon for a ship to lower and raise it’s motorized lifeboats 4 to 5 times a day, which would translate to a proficient evolution. Hope you enjoy the video. Tommy May

USCGC Eagle Part One
October 2, 2021 Traveling back from New Hampshire visiting our daughter Caitlin we were hoping to catch an earlier ferry, than the 6:30 pm we had reservations for in New London Connection enroute Orient NY. Unfortunately we were not able to get aboard the 3:30 pm ferry. While waiting in the standby line, I took a stroll down to the US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, the 295’ training vessel for the Coast Guard Academy and was surprised that I was permitted to do a self guided tour of the upper decks. This was my first time aboard the Eagle since 1980 when she was laid up at the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay Maryland. My ship, the US Coast Guard Cutter Woodrush WLB-407 was being refitted and updated. Eventually we would sail her through the Panama Canal and up to Sitka Alaska her new homeport. While in the Curtis Bay Yard I was able to reunite with Michael Roy, whom I went through Boot Camp with in February 1979. We were attached to graduating class November 103.

USCGC Eagle
Entering New London Harbor aboard the Susan Anne October 1, 2021. Just off our port beam, the US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle proudly displays the “Colors”. The “Eagle”, formerly named after Horst Wessel, a German Paratrooper, was taken possession of by the United States as a war prize after WWII. Adolf Hitler and President John F Kennedy celebrated birthdays aboard the Eagle. I was stationed aboard the USCGC Woodrush WLB-407 during a 1980 refit at the Curtis Bay Yard, in preparation of her trip threw the Panama Canal and eventual homeport of Sitka Alaska. The Cutter Eagle was in the slip just east of us. Michael Roy, whom I attended boot camp in Cape May NJ was stationed aboard her, so I paid him a visit. Together we climbed the forward mast to the second stay, before I called it quits! Semper Paratus, Tommy May USCG 1979 to 1983.
