Earth Water Budget Animation
Earth’s 370 quintillion gallons of water can be found all over the planet in lakes, rivers, glaciers, oceans, and groundwater. However, only a tiny fraction of this water is usable by humans. Understanding Earth’s ‘water budget’ – where these different forms of water exist and how they move – is an important part of understanding our planet and planning for future water needs. NASA has a fleet of satellites to help us bring Earth’s water budget into focus, including upcoming missions like SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography).
SWOT is scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in central California no earlier than December 2022.
SWOT is a collaboration between NASA and the French space agency Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency.

Introducing NASA’s NEW Earth System Observatory
cing the Earth System Observatory – an array of satellites, instruments and missions that are going to collect a series of critical observations. These observations will better inform us of how our planet is changing with greater precision on unimaginable scales – from entire continents down to individual trees. Each mission in itself will deliver important environmental measurements. Taken together, as a single Observatory, we will have a holistic, 3-dimensional understanding of our Earth’s systems – how they work together, how one change can influence another.

Earth from Orbit 2023
Every day of every year, NASA satellites provide useful data about our home planet, and along the way, some beautiful images as well. This video includes satellite images of Earth in 2014 from NASA and its partners as well as photos and a time lapse video from the International Space Station. We’ve also included a range of data visualizations, model runs, and a conceptual animation that were produced in 2014 (but in some cases might have been utilizing data from earlier years.) Below is a full list of the images included.

Sierra Space Dream Chaser Arrival - Move to SSPF High Bay
Dream Chaser Tenacity, Sierra Space's uncrewed cargo spaceplane is lifted and moved by crane inside the Space Systems Processing Facility (SSPF) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Monday, May 20, 2024. Dream Chaser Tenacity will undergo final testing and prelaunch processing inside the high bay of the SSPF ahead of its inaugural launch atop a ULA (United Launch Alliance) Vulcan rocket from nearby Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The reusable transportation system is contracted to perform a minimum of seven cargo missions to the International Space Station as part of the agency’s efforts to expand commercial resupply services to low Earth orbit.

Super Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse
NASA TV provided coverage of Super Blue Moon Lunar Eclipse on Jan. 31. The full moon was the third in a series of “supermoons,” when the Moon is closer to Earth in its orbit -- known as perigee -- and about 14 percent brighter than usual. It was also the second full moon of the month, commonly known as a “blue moon.” As the super blue moon passed through Earth’s shadow, viewers in some locations experienced a total lunar eclipse. While in Earth’s shadow, the moon also took on a reddish tint – which is sometimes referred to as a “blood moon.”
