Savannah Cats 101 : Fun Facts & Myths
In today's video, we are going to talk about 11 Things You Didn’t Know About Savannah Cats. We will also talk about the most common myths, lurking about this special breed.
The Savannah cat has become a popular pet, because of its interesting and exotic appearance as well as its very characteristic tameness and fondness of their owners.
The combination of serval cats and siamese makes this type of cat one of a kind. Savannahs makes great family members and are very social and interesting animals.
Here are 11 Facts You Probably Didn’t know About Domestic Savannah Cats
1 . They are the result of cross-breeding.
Savannahs are a mix of wild serval cats and domestic felines. Savannahs are cousins to the lynx and ocelot, and they all wear the same beautiful spotted coat.
This beautiful breed was created by cross-breeding a domestic cat with an African wild cat. The first litter was born in 1986, with only one kitten. The kitten was named Savannah, which also became the breeds name after breeders found out about the new kitten and took a large interest in this new, beautiful breed of cat.
2. They love water.
Most cats are not too fond of water. It is even safe to say that the majority of cats hate water. But if you need to give your Savannah cat a bath, it won’t be a difficult task. The Savannah cats are known for their love of water, and it is not unusual to find them swimming around, splashing and having the time of their life, while most cats would be longing for bath time to end.
3. They have dog-like personalities.
The Savannah cat is an active, adventurous and curious cat and their its personality has been compared to dogs. The Savannah quickly creates strong bonds to with their owners and often follow them around just like a dog. This has made the Savannah an excellent and popular pet for both cat and dog lovers.
4. They are intelligent.
Savannah cats are generally intelligent and curious. They are easily taught tricks on by command, that just like you normally would see with a well-trained dog doing, . This includes tricks such as retrieving objects, opening doors and cabinets, turning the faucet etc. They also enjoy walking on with a leash, which many other cats find difficult-unbearable. Just like dogs, Savannah cats can also be clicker-trained.
5. They are athletic.
The Savannah cat is, as mentioned earlier, an active and adventure adventurous cat. This, paired together with their long, slim legs make them excellent climbers and jumpers.
Many cat owners claims that their Savannahs likes to be up high, finding them on kitchen counters, on top of refrigerators or cabinets. The Savannah can also jump 8 to 11 feet horizontally, so this curious cat can change its location from one place to another before you have the time to blink.
6. They are expensive.
If you are interested in buying a Savannah cat from a breeder, prepare for a high costto put down some money. This beautiful companion comes at a high price. Savannahs are ranged from F1 down to F6, meaning First Generation or Sixth Generation so on. A Savannah cat is considered purebred at F4 and later generations.
How Much Is A Savannah Cat?
The price of a F1 Savannah cat is somewhere between $17,000- $22,000, because of the extreme difficulty of pairing and very small litters. Lower generations such as F3 to F6 will cost about $1,000 – $ 4,000, since the pairings are easier and each pairing yields bigger litters.
7. They can grow tall.
There have been two cats to hold the Guinness World Records title for Tallest Domestic Cat, both of them being Savannahs. The first winner in 2013, name Trouble, was 19 inches tall, toes to shoulder. Trouble fell to second place in 2017, when the Savannah Arcturus was measured at just over 19 inches tall.
8. They are social and playful.
Savannah cats loves playing with their human friends and are known for even greeting their family members at the door. The Savannah fluffs the base of their tail when greeting and can also wag their tails just like a dog greeting its human would. It is usual for Savannah cats to sleep close to their humans at night, sometime even under the covers for warmth.
They also enjoy playing fetch, since they are easily taught how to retrieve objects. They are not afraid or cautious of strangers, and they will happily engage in playtime with anyone who is willing to play.

Savannah Cat 101 : Breed & Personality
n today's video, we are going to talk about a wild breed, that caught the eyes of many cat fanciers around the world.
The Savannah Cat.
Judging by the Savannah Cat’s wild appearance and personality, you might assume that breeders simply plucked a feline right off the plains of Africa. And to be honest, the history of this breed isn’t too far off.
Back in the mid-1980s, a cat breeder in the United States, Judee Frank, had taken into her care a Serval cat named Ernie. To Judee’s surprise, one of her other cats, a Siamese, had a single kitten by Ernie. This first known F1 kitten took the name “Miracle”.
Miracle’s Owners changed her name to Savannah, perhaps to reflect the African savannah heritage, and so began a new cat breed. Much of the Savannahs’ early breeding is credited to Joyce Sroufe and Patrick Kelley, who established the breed by 1996. Shortly thereafter, they submitted the breed standard to the International Cat Association. The Association then formally recognized the cat breed in 2012.
However, other than the specific breeding lines, there is much to be said about the history of the Savannah Cat. With this in mind, let’s take it back to where it all started, a few thousand years ago in Africa.
As early as 1300 BCE, humans traded Serval cats in Ancient Egypt, along with other exotic animals. They appear in Egyptian art depicting mythologies and legends, which suggest that they held a special place in the hearts and minds of Ancient Egyptians.
If you want something even wilder than a Bengal, the Savannah is a cross between a domestic cat and an African serval. First-generation Savannah cats are 50% wild.
It’s no surprise that a Savannah Cat doesn’t display domesticated cat personality traits. You probably won’t find them snuggling up on their Owner’s lap, or waiting patiently for food or treats. Instead, this is a cat with a personality that allowed them to thrive for thousands of years in the African plains.
The most obvious example of this is with the Savannah’s hunting drive. And to understand it, let’s loop back to the Serval. Several adaptations make the Serval an excellent hunter. This wildcat has larger ears than other felines for better hearing. They’re sometimes called “giraffe cats” because, out of all felines, they have the longest legs in proportion to their bodies.
Savannah Cats are curious about new people, which can be off-putting for some. If you’re expecting company, it’s best to warn any newcomers that your wild-looking Savannah Cat will likely approach them, sniff them, and maybe even try to play.
Savannah Cats have a wide range of fascinating vocalizations. From their domestic lineage, you will hear the familiar meowing and purring from Savannahs. But there are a few more surprises, too.
Many Owners report distinctive wailing, yowling, yelping, and chirping. There’s even some characteristic chattering and barking.
This isn’t a cat for every Cat Owner. Unfortunately, some are so enchanted by the Savannah Cat’s unique appearance that they don’t learn more before bringing one home. What’s more, these cats are so rare that it’s not common to spend time with one before making the choice to adopt one.
In reality, though, the Savannah Cat requires more attention, more exercise, more rules, and a more strict diet than other domestic cats. Every cat breed will require good ownership practices, of course. But the Savannah Cat is what you might call a high maintenance breed in comparison.
That said, for those who have experience with high energy cats, and are willing to put in the time and effort, the Savannah Cat is just as enchanting and awe-inspiring as you would expect. With their dog-like qualities and feline grace, this is a breed that is amazing to have around.

Savannah the Serval Cat.
Savannah is a resident serval cat at HESC.
She was brought to HESC in 2013 by a family that had tried to hand rear it after rescuing it, and soon realised it was not meant to be tamed.
Unfortunately she has become too domesticated, and will always seek out human attention, making it a risk to herself to be left into the wild.
The family still come to visit her at our centre, where she now has a forever home

Serval Cats 101 : Fun Facts & Myths
In today's video, we are going to talk about some interesting facts and myths about the Serval Cat.
Servals are medium-sized wild cats with tawny, black-spotted coats and long necks and long legs that allow them to see over savanna grasses. They also have large ears and an acute sense of hearing.
The serval cat is a beautiful animal that some people keep as an exotic pet. While you may be able to acquire a serval cat from a breeder, they are considered wild cats. To own a serval cat, you must create a large, secure outdoor enclosure and provide a warm environment year-round. They will need to feed on whole prey food items and require veterinary care from an experienced exotics vet.
Here are some of the interesting facts about the Serval Cat, which will give you some further insight into its characteristics and temperament.
1. Serval Cat's Size and Appearance.
Often referred to as the cat of spare parts, this unusual, but the beautiful cat is among the feline family’s most successful. It has a small, delicate head and extremely large ears set on an elongated neck, long slim legs, hind legs longer than the front, a long slender body, and a short tail. The ears are black on the back with a distinctive white spot, and the tail has 6 or 7 black rings and a black tip.
The coat color is pale yellow with black markings, either of large spots that tend to merge into longitudinal stripes on the neck and back, or of numerous small spots, which give a speckled appearance. These "speckled" Servals from West Africa used to be considered a separate species of Felis Brachyura until it was demonstrated that the speckled pattern was just a "morph".
2. Serval Cat's Behaviour.
They are solitary animals. The serval is active in the day as well as at night; activity might peak in the early morning, around twilight, and at midnight. Servals might be active for a longer time on cool or rainy days. During the hot midday, they rest or groom themselves in the shade of bushes and grasses.
Servals remain cautious of their vicinity. Servals walk as much as 2 to 4 kilometers every night. Servals will often use special trails to reach certain hunting areas. A solitary animal, there is little social interaction among servals except in the mating season. The only long-lasting bond appears to be of the mother and her cubs, which leave their mother only when they are a year old.
The female defends home ranges of 9.5 to 19.8 square kilometers, depending on local prey availability. The male defends larger territories of 11.6 to 31.5 square kilometers and marks its territory by spraying urine onto bushes.
The serval is vulnerable to hyaenas and wild dogs. It will seek cover to escape their view, and, if the predator is very close, immediately flee in long leaps, changing its direction frequently and with the tail raised. They are efficient climbers. An individual was observed to have climbed a tree to a height of more than 9 meters to escape dogs. Like many cats, the serval is able to purr, it also has a high-pitched chirp and can hiss, cackle, growl, grunt, and meow.
3. Serval Cat's Habitat.
Servals are found in well-watered savannah long-grass environments and are associated with reed beds and other riparian vegetation types. They occupy a variety of habitats all associated with water sources, they range up into alpine grasslands and can penetrate deep dense forests along waterways and through grassy patches, but are absent from rain forests. They will make use of arid areas in extreme instances and have occasionally done so in parts of south-western Africa.
4. Serval Cat's Hunting and Diet.
The serval’s sensitive hearing allows it to locate small mammals moving through the grass or underground, and to hunt its prey sometimes without seeing it until the final pounce. Servals are carnivores, which means they eat meat. Servals also have the ability to leap vertically and catch prey such as birds, right out of the air. They do this by "clapping" with their front paws together and striking with a downward blow. Primary prey items for the Serval include rodents, birds, reptiles, fish, frogs, insects, and crabs. Servals have a hunting success rate of 50%.
Do not be alarmed if your serval eats so fast, that it regurgitates everything right back up due to clogging its throat. It may attempt to re-eat the regurgitated food if has not started fermenting from its stomach acid.
When feeding them, a game or puzzle that makes the cat problem-solve will enable the meal to be more rewarding and counts as an enrichment activity in their daily routine.
