How to Prep Camellia Flowers as Cut Flowers! (#short) Shirley Bovshow
This is how you prep Camellia flowers from your garden as long-lasting cut flowers! The first thing to do is strike the bottom of the stem to remove the outer covering so that water will flow through the tissue. You can also cut into the stem vertically. Don't be scared, you won't kill the Camellia flower.

Gorgeous Mulch Options for Garden and Landscapes! (Shirley Bovshow)
Did you know that there are many mulch options that benefit your plants but also add style to your garden and landscapes? When you're at the garden center, there are many different mulches to choose from?
Which one do you get?
Mulches are a practical and beneficial addition to the garden. A layer of mulch helps to block the sun's rays and retards weed growth. Mulch helps regulate soil temperatures. Mulch also benefits your garden soil when it breaks down.
I'm sharing some of my favorite garden mulches today for different kinds of plants and applications.
1. "Gorilla Hair" mulch by Gardeners is an ideal mulch for the strawberry patch. The Gorilla hair mulch has the texture of cotton candy and knits and holds well together creating a solid physical block against the sun and weeds. It is spun redwood and is good for hillsides and my favorite for vegetable gardens.
2. Recycled Hazelnut shells have an architectural look to them and are good for accenting sculptural plants like succulents. Use a landscape fabric underneath to keep the hazelnut shells from digging into the ground.
3. Small Bark Redwood pairs well with azaleas and other acid-loving plants like roses, gardenias, and camellias. When redwood bark breaks down it imparts an acidic ph to the soil which these plants need to thrive!
4. Recycled Rubber is made into rolls and is a good mulch for an ornamental ( not edible) landscape. It is a practical material in commercial landscapes because it is low maintenance and lasts a long time.
Recycled rubber mulch is for areas in the garden that are permanent and not planted often. Under trees, hedges, and other permanent plants!
Find Recycled rubber mulch on Amazon!
https://amzn.to/40ePasl
Select mulch that is beneficial for your plants and that also adds a beautiful aesthetic and style to your garden and landscape!

BROMELIAD GARDENS Huge Bromeliads Growing in the Ground- Florida! (Gardening Shorts) Shirley Bovshow
I came across huge bromeliads growing in the ground in Florida! Take a look! The bromeliad garden was a "grove" of bromeliad mother plants and their pups, or "daughter plants!"
Once a bromeliad flowers, it begins to decline or die. The mother plant guarantees its survival by birthing "pups" or "daughter plants" that can be separated from the mother plant once it is at least 8 inches tall and has sturdy roots.
If you don't live in a tropical climate, Bromeliad plants may be a strictly "indoor" plant for you. It's fascinating to see a "terrestrial" bromeliad growing from the ground outdoors!
Enjoy!

Landscaping Mistakes with Lantana (Ground Cover Plant) Shirley Bovshow #shorts
Are you guilty of this landscaping mistake? I recently saw a majestic potted palm tree that was underplanted with Lantana that was sheared back so much, all you saw was a bunch of woody stems, no leaves, and one single flower!
Lantana is a beautiful flowering plant that can be used as a spiller or a cascading ground cover in a large container. It attracts pollinators but this lantana was pruned back so much, all the leaves and flowers were missing.
TIP: When planting a cascading plant like Lantana that can easily overgrow the container, do selective pruning of stems when the plant is still young and cut back to a lower node, but don't shear this plant! You will lose all the aesthetics of the plant and compromise it's health.

Spontaneous Orchid Plant: Keiki (Phalaenopsis)😀 Shirley Bovshow #shorts
Check out this new orchid plant also known as a “Keiki.” Sometimes a Phalaenopsis orchid will randomly sprout a new plant at the end of a stem (stalk).
Instead of seeing new orchid flower buds, an orchid plant will grow a new plantlet complete with new leaves and roots at the top of a stalk!
When this happens consider yourself lucky! There is nothing wrong with your orchid even though it may seem bizarre with aerial roots floating high above the plant!
When a Keiki (new baby orchid) grows, it's best to wait until the roots grow a few inches long (take a look at the roots in the orchid in the video).
When orchid roots are 2 or 3 inches long, you can cut the Keiki from the mother plant and repot the orchid in a new pot!
Keiki’s are rare in Phalaenopsis but they do occur. Keikis are the easiest ways to propagate an orchid plant though you can not induce keikis to grow!
They happen randomly on their own!
This plant was rescued from a trash bin by an orchid lover.
She was thrilled to see that her act of plant kindness rewarded her with not one, but two keikis on one orchid plant!

✅ DRIP IRRIGATION! 🚰 Install a Drip Irrigation System to Container Plants! Shirley Bovshow
DRIP IRRIGATION saves water and saves time watering plants by hand! Watch Shirley Bovshow demonstrate how to install a drip irrigation system to 5 different container plants in just a few minutes! You can do this without the help of a professional gardener or handyperson by using a simple drip watering kit!
A drip irrigation system is a great watering tool during times of drought and watering restrictions. Drip irrigation provides efficient watering to plant roots where water is needed.
Shirley uses a drip irrigation system kit by Rain Bird that allows you to install drip irrigation to 10 patio plants. The watering kit comes with all materials including:
-A pressure relief valve that you attach to a hose bib. A pressure relief valve reduces the pressure flowing through the hose bib so that it doesn't overwhelm the drip tube hose
-25 feet of 1/4 inch tubing that has a backflow filter built into the coupler. The 1/4 inch tubing is easy to cut with scissors to connect a series of potted plants to the drip irrigation system!
-Plastic "T" connectors to connect drip hose
-Drip emitters in two sizes for low and higher water flow plants
-Stakes to support the emitters and keep them off of the soil
Saving water is a serious issue in many areas of the country. A drip irrigation system will help you water your garden most efficiently!

I'm Growing Corn in a Small (4x8 ft) Raised Bed! You Can Too! (Foodie Gardener) Shirley Bovshow
I'm growing corn in a small, 4-foot by the 8-foot raised garden bed and you can too! Foodie Gardener, Shirley Bovshow demonstrates how to grow corn in a very small space! As soon as the weather warms up to 75 to 95 degrees on a consistent basis, it's time to plant corn. Select a sunny spot that receives sun all day long because the corn needs it.
Because corn is a very hungry and thirsty plant, it needs nutrient-rich soil. I'm filling my raised garden bed with a special soil blend made for raised gardens. It offers great texture, and moisture retention, plus organic nutrients to feed the corn. Corn is a part of the grass family.
Spacing corn correctly is crucial to growing corn in a small space because it affects the success of pollination. Follow Shirley and her crew of beginner gardeners as she demonstrates step by step how to select healthy corn plants from the garden center, how to space them, how deeply to plant them,, fertilize them, water them, and when to harvest corn.
You will be able to grow corn in a small raised garden by doing it correctly!
Do you have a question about growing corn or any other gardening need?

My Orchid Cactus (Epiphyllum) in Bloom 😀Shirley Bovshow (#shorts)
I've had my orchid cactus (Epiphyllum) for over a year now and it's the first time it blooms at home! Did you know that the orchid cactus is an epiphyte plant? In the wild, epiphyllums grow on tree trunks instead of in the soil!
We can grow them in well-draining soil or cactus mix.
Another interesting note about epiphyllums is that they are "tropical cacti."
Not all cacti are desert plants. Enjoy my #shorts video.

WHITE SAGE PLANT: Compact Variety for You Garden (Salvia apiana 'Compacta') Shirley Bovshow #shorts
Do you love the white sage plant (Salvia apiana)? Did you know that this California native salvia (sage) is available as a compact variety for your garden or container? I was so happy to see a compact variety at the Theodore Payne Native Plant nursery in Southern California recently.
The regular white sage plant can grow 5 feet tall and 5 feet wide while the compact variety grows half of that size! You can see the shorter, compact white sage in my garden thriving in full sun.
White sage is a traditional ceremonial plant for indigenous communities and is also a popular natural therapeutic and medicinal plant. Many people like the scent of sage incense and as a decorative dried herb in wreaths and other natural crafts.
Check out this beautiful compact variety of white sage!

Types of PEPPER PLANTS to Grow at Home/🔥WHY is this PEPPER so HOT? 🔥Capsaicin (Foodie Gardener)
Are you new to gardening and need a guide on the types of pepper plants to grow at home? Foodie Gardener, Shirley Bovshow shares some guidelines for selecting pepper plants and explains how the amount of Capsaicin in a pepper dictates how spicy it tastes!
Did you know that when your mouth is on fire after biting into a ghost pepper, it's all in your mind? Your tongue is only IMAGINING that it's on fire, but it's not really burning. It's the capsaicin in the pepper that is playing tricks on you.
Peppers are rated from mild and sweet to intolerable heat on a scale called the Scoville Pepper Scale. Knowing the Scoville pepper rating for the particular pepper plant you want to grow is a great starting point!
When you are ready to select your peppers and start planting, watch Shirley's video:

Planting Peppers in Raised Beds at Home! From Digging to Harvest! (Foodie Gardener)
New gardeners learn all about planting peppers in raised beds at home!! From digging into the right soil, in the right sun exposure, the right temperatures, planting peppers at the right depth and spacing, watering peppers, fertilizing peppers, supporting pepper plants, and harvesting., this video covers it all!
Foodie Gardener, Shirley Bovshow reviews all of the basics for growing peppers. Take your pick! Do you want to grow sweet peppers or hot, spicy peppers at home?
Gardening tips include cautions about planting vegetables that are in the nightshade family (peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers) in the same raised bed every season. This can cause pest infestations as plants in the nightshade family tend to attract the same insects that will be waiting for new plants to feast on.
If you are new to growing food and want to learn how to grow your first vegetable garden crops, follow our "Foodie Gardener" series here on the Eden Maker by Shirley Bovshow channel.

Best Tomatoes to Grow In Containers! 🍅 Must Know Before You Grow! (Foodie Gardener) Shirley Bovshow
🍅Don't start shopping for tomato plants to grow in a container until you watch this video! Foodie Gardener, Shirley Bovshow shares the information for the BEST TOMATOES to grow in containers! Not all tomato varieties are suitable as potted tomatoes!
Shirley suggests that you consider some compact, smaller growing tomato plants such as cherry tomatoes or other "determinate" type tomatoes.
All tomatoes are classified as either "Determinate" or "Indeterminate" tomatoes and they grow very differently.
Determinate tomatoes are usually more compact plants, (perfect as container-grown tomatoes) and put out the fruit (tomatoes) within a short window of time.
After the 2 or 3-week period, determinate tomatoes are done for the season. Many paste tomatoes are determinate, making canning and preserving them a timely project. Determinate tomato plants also tend to grow in bush form rather than tall and vining.
Indeterminate tomatoes are the opposite of determinate tomatoes and have an "indefinite" growing period! Indeterminate tomato plants can continue producing tomatoes until the first frost. In mild climates, this can be all the way until December!

DRY a Flowers Like a Pro! Shirley Bovshow (#shorts)
Enjoy this beautiful #shorts tutorial on how to dry flower bouquets like a pro!
Here are the simple instructions:
1. Tie the bouquet into a bundle using cotton or other natural fiber string or twine. Rubber bands do not work as well because the stems will slip once the flowers start drying and shrinking. The twine has a natural texture that adheres to stems a lot better.
2. Hang the flower bouquets upside down from a strong rope or rod and space the bouquets so that there is good air circulation. The better the air circulation, the faster the flowers will dry.
3. Hand flower bouquets out of direct sunlight as the sunlight will bleach the flower colors
4. When the flowers and stalks are fully dry (crispy) spray a bit of hair spray or floral preserving spray to help lock out moisture.
5. Make decorative wreaths, hand bouquets, and resin flower art with your dried flowers! Be creative!

GERANIUM PLANT: Abandoned Zonal Geranium THRIVES in Alley with No Care! (#shorts) Shirley Bovshow
The other day, I came across a stunning geranium plant, (an abandoned zonal geranium) thriving in an alleyway! The geranium was in the midst of weeds, up against a chainlink fence, and the soil was very dry. But it was looking GOOOD!
Regardless of the lack of human care, the vivid red geranium plant was robust and full of life with many flower buds still to open! I used to NOT like geraniums a long time ago but have since come to respect these low water, low maintenance, and low care flowering plants!
Geraniums are workhorse plants worthy of even better care as a potted or container plant, or planted in the ground in the garden! I can only imagine how much more beautiful this geranium could be with a little more water, some fertilizer, and love!
You can find many different types of geraniums including zonal geraniums, ivy geraniums, Regal geraniums, Martha Washington geraniums, Scented geraniums, and many more.
They are available in a rainbow of colors and are extremely easy to propagate through geranium cuttings. No wonder they are a perennial favorite!
Give them full sun and they will reward you with lots of flowers from spring to fall!
Do you LOVE Geraniums and Want to make more of them? Watch my video on propagating geraniums with stem cuttings!

Narrow Space Garden Plants: SURPRISE! 😯 Train a Flowering Hibiscus 💮Flat on a Wall! Shirley Bovshow
Do you have a very narrow garden bed and feel limited in what you can plant? Not anymore! Garden designer, Shirley Bovshow demonstrates some narrow space garden plants including, surprise!.... A flowering Hibiscus plant that she trains to grow flat against a wall. This is how you train a large plant to fit in a small space- espalier it!
The technique is called "espalier" and it allows the Hibiscus to be exposed to maximum sunshine. The Hibiscus stems are tied to a trellis, opening and exposing the hibiscus to maximum sunshine, resulting in lots of Hibiscus flowers! In addition to the hibiscus, Shirley plants Agapanthus, a perennial summer flowering plant with strappy leaves, and an Aeonium succulent plant that grows tall and narrow.
Watch and learn how to train a hibiscus to grow in a small narrow garden space and if you have any questions, post them below.

Diabetic Recipes Type 2: Spicy ZUCCHINI CHIPS! 😃 Won't Spike Blood Sugar! (#shorts) Shirley Bovshow
One of my favorite diabetic recipes is “DEHYDRATED SPICY ZUCCHINI CHIPS” 🥒 My dehydrated zucchini chips are a great low carb snack and won't spike blood sugar just don't eat them all in one sitting!!
Need a low carb, low glycemic index, and low glycemic load alternative to potato chips? Look no further!😀
I was diagnosed with Type2 Diabetes last year 😧
I can’t snack mindlessly anymore and reach for whatever tickles my fancy. Every bite is calculated, weighed, and carbohydrates logged. My goal is to #reversediabetes 😀
So that’s where these homemade spicy zucchini chips come in!
-Fresh Zucchini ( I grow mine in my garden)
-Spray olive or avocado oil
-Old Bay Seasoning
1. *Slice Zucchini into thin, uniform slices. They will dry more consistently if the same size.
* I bought a mandolin slicer for $4 at the Goodwill ho look for one!
2. Spray zucchini slices on both sides with oil and sprinkle Old Bay Seasoning or seasoning of choice
3. *Dehydrate slices for 12 hours at 120 degrees in a dehydrator. (You can also dry the chips in an oven on a cookie sheet and low temperature for several hours)
* I also saw dehydrators at the thrift shop for $10!
The Zucchini chips are ready when they snap and are not chewy anymore!
The dehydrated chips taste the best fresh but you can store them in an airtight container for a week or so.
Enjoy!!
FYI- I am not a candidate for diabetic medication because of familial health issues that predispose me to thyroid cancer. So, I have to manage my blood sugar through proper nutrition, stress management, weight loss, exercise, and a great sleep schedule!
I try different foods and measure my glucose levels before eating and then 30 min, 60 min, and 2 hours later so I know if a certain food raises my sugar or not!
DO YOU HAVE TYPE 2 DIABETES and want to join me in supporting each other to reverse it?
I want to share my diabetes hacks with you and also learn from YOU!😀❤️

How to Eat Fruits for Diabetics T2: To Avoid Glucose Spike After Eating! Shirley Bovshow #shorts
As a Type 2 diabetic, I had to learn to eat strategically to avoid spiking my glucose (blood sugar). This #shorts video is about how to eat fruits for diabetics to avoid glucose spikes!
Although fruit has carbohydrates that affect blood sugar levels, do this when eating fruit to avoid glucose spikes (blood sugar spikes)!
1. Select a fruit that is on the list of low glycemic index and low glycemic fruits. Today I am eating kumquats.
2. Limit your fruit to a small portion. You can always eat half a serving now and the other half later.
3. Add a good quality protein and fat to the fruit snack to slow down the absorption and digestion of the fruit carbohydrates. Fat and protein act like "speed bumps" and slow down the absorption of fruit carbs! Today I am combining the kumquat fruit with a half-ounce of cheese and a few walnuts.
4. Eat fruit very slowly and alternate between a small bite of fruit, the cheese, and the nuts. Yes, it makes a difference.
Always combine fruit with fats and protein, that is the main food tip in this #shorts video on eating fruit for Type 2 diabetics!
Let's encourage each other to reverse diabetes!
