Rose Care Tips #2: Save & Dry Rose Petals When They Fall For 🌹Rose Potpourri/Shirley Bovshow #shorts
Enjoy this #shorts Rose Care Tips #2 video featuring my David Austin Roses that I cut from my garden and displayed in my kitchen~ Save and dry the falling rose petals and use them to make fragrant rose potpourri!
I use a small baking cooling rack and place it underneath the cut rose vase to catch the petals as they fall. It looks pretty too! By the time my English roses have dropped all their petals, I have a nice supply of dried rose petals for potpourri, for dried flower art, or my own supply of rose petals to make flower confetti! It's a small tip but you'd be surprised how many people don't think of saving their dried rose petals for DIY floral crafting projects!
There are so many ways to enjoy roses from your garden and it begins with treating yourself by taking cut roses and putting them in a vase. Display them where you can see them and enjoy the fragrance and colors up close and personal!
Fresh cut flowers are an affordable luxury that extends beyond the freshness date. Dried rose petals have a beauty of their own! Enjoy your roses in every phase of their life! I'll show you how.

Rose Gardening Tips: Grow HUGE Long Stem Roses! 🌹 Shirley Bovshow ( #Shorts)
Shirley Bovshow shares some rose gardening tips to help you grow HUGE Long Stem Roses in this #shorts gardening video
The first tip is to plant hybrid tea roses as they are the type of roses that produce long stem roses!
Shirley shows how hybrid tea roses produce straight long stems with a single rose at the end as you would expect to see. However, sometimes a hybrid tea rose will produce more than one rose per stem.
To grow HUGE long stem roses Shirley suggests keeping one rose flower per stem and removing the extra flowers to force all the growth energy to ONE rose flower!

Rose Tree: How to Support a Rose Tree Correctly! Shirley Bovshow (#shorts)
Shirley Bovshow shows you how to support a rose tree correctly in this #shorts video. A rose tree that becomes top-heavy will begin to lean or list putting your rose tree at risk for damage. The solution is to stake your rose trees using two stakes and padded guying wires.
Most rose trees come with a single wood stake but this will not offer sufficient support for your rose tree as it grows. Many times these stakes are tied tightly around the rose tree trunk and become embedded in the trunk with time.
To support a rose tree correctly, it's best to add two sturdy support stakes at planting time but you can add them anytime afterward, with care. Avoid inserting the tree stakes into the root ball.
This is done by placing two stakes on opposite sides of the trunk in the ground outside the original root ball. They should be placed perpendicular to the prevailing wind and attached to the trunk no higher than two-thirds of the tree's height.
MATERIALS
(2) padded guy wires for staking trees that you can buy at the garden center or online- (see links to materials below)
✅ WIRE TREE SUPPORT KIT: https://amzn.to/3ffYCWR
(2) wood or metal stakes
-mallet
1. Drive the first stake into the ground at a distance that clears or avoids the rootball.
Use a mallet to drive the stake to a depth of 12 inches or more.
2. Install the second stake opposite the first stake
3. Push the tree upright (you may need someone to help)
4. Place the first padded guy wire around the rose tree trunk and twist the wire on to the first stake
5. Hold the tree upright while another person installs the second padded wire around the trunk and wraps it around the second stake.
Twist the wires so that the trunk is sturdy but still has a little movement.
Remove the stakes after a few seasons when the rose tree has become strong and sturdy and can stand on its own. If you live in a windy area, you may leave the stakes longer. Just check the wires to make sure they don't embed themselves into the trunk!

Rose Care Tip: 🌹Roses LOVE Tea!! Recycle Tea Bags as Compost for Roses! Shirley Bovshow (#Shorts)
ROSES Love CHAI TEA!! (#Shorts)
Composting TIP: Reycle tea bags as a natural compost for roses!
After enjoying my delicious afternoon cup of chai tea, I shared some of the residual goodness with my roses!
Black tea leaves harvested from the Camellia sinensis plant have an affinity for acidic soil and so do roses!
Don’t throw away your bag of tea!
First, remove any staples on the bag and string that will not decompose.
Bury the tea bag in the soil where your rose is planted. The teabag will break down slowly and release the organic matter into the soil!!
Next time you have a cup of tea, share a little something-something with your roses!

HYDRANGEA CARE: Love Blue Hydrangeas? How to Change Pink Hydrangea Flowers to Blue! Shirley Bovshow
Hydrangea care tip! Do you love blue hydrangeas? Shirley Bovshow shares a key tip to change pink hydrangea flowers to blue hydrangeas (or purple hydrangea flowers)! It's easy to change hydrangea flower colors by lowering the soil PH level in the ground or in a container. I recommend using a soil amendments that acts as a soil acidifier, (one that doesn't have aluminum sulfites). When the soil is acidic (pH 5.5 or lower), aluminum is more available to the roots, resulting in blue flowers.
If you are growing hydrangeas in containers it's even easier to change the soil ph by adding an acidifying soil amendment. Watch this easy-to-understand gardening video with Shirley Bovshow, one of the most beloved gardening teachers on YOUTUBE!

CICADAS ARE COMING! Brood X (10) Cicada Swarm 2021 🐛 How To PROTECT YOUR TREES NOW! Shirley Bovshow
Periodical Cicadas are coming! The 2021 Cicada Brood X (Brood 10) swarm is emerging from underground after 16 years and it's time to protect your garden trees right now! Garden expert, Shirley Bovshow explains the purpose of the periodical cicada swarm, (Brood X) and what garden plants and trees you should be concerned about.
Shirley demonstrates how to protect young, or recently planted trees from being devastated when cicadas lays eggs in their branches by covering them with horticultural or agricultural netting aka "garden netting" and "tree netting."
You can find garden netting at garden centers and online. Another option is to wrap your young tree with insect sticky paper and insect sticky tape. The periodic cicadas will stick to paper and tape and will be unable to damage your tree.
Periodical Cicadas breed above ground every 17 years and make their presence known by their loud mating songs initiated by the male cicada. The loud sound of Cicadas is sometimes compared to the sound of a jet airplane or power drill! Shirley also offers tips on what not to do so you won't attract more cicadas to your yard!
Will the Cicadas feast on your new vegetable garden or rose garden? Watch Shirley's informative and entertaining Cicada video and get ready to protect your trees!

NO! 😞You CAN'T PROPAGATE ROSES from Bouquet Rose STEM CUTTINGS!🌹Shirley Bovshow/ EdenMakers
No! YOU CAN'T PROPAGATE ROSES FROM BOUQUET ROSE stem cuttings or store-bought roses!!! There's a growing number of videos and articles on the internet that claim that you can regrow roses from cuttings from long stem roses also known as bouquet roses, but IT'S NOT TRUE!!
The odds are stacked against a successful rose propagation for a number of reasons. Garden expert, Shirley Bovshow explains.
"Most bouquet roses travel thousands of miles from South America, Africa, and Australia before reaching the wholesale and retail florists who sell the roses to the consumer. By the time the consumer has a rose bouquet in their hands, it's been 7 to 10 days since the roses were cut from the plant!" Taking stem cuttings from bouquet roses is inferior to taking fresh cuttings from a lateral stem on a rose plant. Watch this video and understand why!
Shirley explains the interesting details about commercial flower roses that will make you a more informed rose plant grower! Of course, you can experiment with trying to propagate a bouquet rose, you only have time to lose! You might get lucky but the odds are against you.
I hope you will appreciate the fact that accurate information is very important to me!
DISCLAIMER: When I refer to "commercial cut roses" or "florist roses" I am not referring to local fresh cut organic roses or miniature roses that have a greater chance of rooting successfully.
I do mention that 'You may be able to root a florist rose but you would have to be very lucky and manage your expectations." I stand by that claim.
The purpose of this video is to share solid reasons why you should not EXPECT this method of propagation to be successful.
-Sure, in nature, there are exceptions to the rule, and when a florist rose successfully roots, this is an exception! In fact, when you use "proper" propagation techniques, even an experienced propagator may have only a 60 to 70% success rate, and that is considered good!
There are several reasons the odds are stacked against you when trying to root a cutting from a typical florist rose bouquet:
Rose cuttings root more successfully when they are "stuck" soon after cutting. The plant hormones are at their most potent level for creating roots, new shoots, and leaves.
Most commercial roses are imported from South America, Africa, and other countries around the world. By the time they get to the wholesaler, the retailer, then the consumer, florist roses would have been cut from 5 to 8 days prior!
Commercial cut roses are treated with different chemicals, (natural and man-made) that inhibit rooting to secure fresh-looking roses.
Florists often remove all the leaves, and thorns, (that lay above nodes) which are the growing points in stems. With no leaves, nodes, or damaged nodes, a rose cutting will not produce roots! The cutting may grow leaves but NO ROOTS! (I hear this a lot).
Commercial cut roses are NOT bred to be successful and reliable "garden roses" for climates outside of their greenhouses or unique outdoor climate
Many commercial roses are grafted onto a rootstock that promotes tall, turgid stems, large flowers, glossy leaves in an "artificially managed environment" These roses are bred to become "JUST A CUT ROSE!"
I compare many commercial cut roses to a movie set:
The sets are built to LOOK beautiful for a temporary display. These facades aren't built with structural integrity or for people to actually LIVE in the buildings. They only need to stand as long as the cameras are rolling and when the director says "cut" the walls come tumbling down!
The purpose of commercial cut roses is similar...they just have to look amazing for a total of 15-20 days, which is the typical shelf life of a florist rose.
-Garden and landscape roses are bred with the opposite goal in mind- to function and produce roses for the long haul. So they are the most reliable source for cuttings!.
There are more biological reasons why commercial cut rose stems are not optimal for rooting!
