Amateur Radio POTA US-6947 #34
NC US-6947 #34 Sandhills State Game Land
The rain forecast made me to decide to operate from the car today using my MFJ Short HF Mobile Ham-tenna. 13 contacts mostly p2p but did make a couple of contacts by calling cq on 15 and 40. I activated US-8010 yesterday. The parks join each other but they are not a two for. I had good reports on my signal today. Thanks for the contacts.

Amateur radio activating a new ro me South Carolina park
Amateur radio activating a new South Carolina park. Chesterfield County I never get the top score in contest but I did submit my log for the SC QSO Party I don’t know why I am having trouble calling CQ SC QSO party. And 40 was really busy. The photos of packing for Astronomy versus Amateur Radio was a result of me unloading the telescope after an outreach event for Astronomy the night before the activation. With my set up there is more equipment I need to carry for Astronomy then my ham radio.

I am still amazed at what signals we get from a portable antenna! It only took me 50:minutes to set up from when I arrived until my first QSO. When I heard a CQ on ten from Namibia. I had to respond. I mere 7,462 miles away. I decided to call CQ on ten and picked up an aeronautical mobile over Raleigh. The father was the pilot and son co-pilot. Both hams. I had to ask questions. I am subject to change my POTA contacts to a QSO. In addition to the aeronautical mobile I made a few other videos for my website. Check out my website at n4mqu dot com later for the videos. After the activation I took the bike out. I am trying to learn how to ride and prove I am not getting old. I haven’t owned a bicycle since I got my drivers license and only been on a bicycle when I go visit the radio telescope facility in Green Bank WV where they only allow diesel automobiles and bicycles. I had a nice ride. Thanks for the hunters and p2p. If you ever want to activate a park around my neighborhood look me up. We are close to the South Carolina line off of US 1!

This is a POTA friendly park. I started off hunting today and had the required number of activation in 8 minutes thanks to the multiple 2 park activators and 1 5 park activators. I also used my headphones today. That is rare for me at activations. This park has more of an opportunity for visitors to see an activator than other parks in my jurisdiction. So I displayed my POTA flag. Guess what happened a school group came by for their snack break and sat at the surrounding tables. One of the adults ask me what I was doing as she pointed to my flag. I explained it to her and gave her one of my business cards. Told her the hobby was open to people of all ages and showed her the map I had of my contacts at that point.. one of the adults said he thought I was flying a drone. Great to have DX contacts in Canada, England, Belgium, Spain, Chile, Germany, and Poland. I am also enjoying QSOs with my regular US contacts. Isn’t it fun as you start to recognize regular contacts! After the activation I had purchased lunch at my favorite BBQ food truck Max’s Millstone BBQ & Catering Thanks for the hunters and P2P.

In the videos you will hear tips on taking down your antenna and what I do to organize my gear to carry it home. Don’t worry about having everything perfect. I have grown and didn’t start out with the equipment I have now. (And I don’t have the newest equipment) Thanks to the hunters and p2p and the early shift contacts.

Activating K-2888 for amateur radio
K-2888 Cheraw State Park 28 miles
28 miles from home This made my 50th unique park activation and my 1000th p2p contact. This is my 3rd South Carolina Park. It was a nice day at the park. Thanks to all the hunters and p2p. 21 contacts 2 on 15, 1 on 17, 2 on 40 and 15 on 20. Looking at the map to extend my park activation list I’ll have to do some driving that may be possible. But I have 5 parks I can easily get to on a regular basis.

K-6848 POTA activation by n4mqu
NC K-6848 President James K. Polk State Historic Site
74 miles from home 149 activations I put it in Waze and it routed me on a toll road oh well it’s a bit far for me but glad I did it.
I arrived and walked thru the museum. I mentioned that I was an amateur radio operator and he said we can operate from there but just don’t use the trees for the antenna. :( I was prepared. I had my MFJ Short HF Mobile Ham-tenna. I made 26 contacts on 40, 17, 15 and 20. Thanks to the hunters and p2p.
This video contains a tribute to my friend. Honey Davis 1948 - 2023. She was interested in my amateur radio activities and even wanted to go on an activation with me but God had other plans before we got her to one of the parks.

It was a nice morning for activating a park. It wasn’t roo hot. I used MFJ Short HF Mobile Ham-tenna tried 10, 17, 15, 20, 40 but only successful on 20 and 40. Check your radio settings if you are not making contacts. I called for 10 minutes before realizing I had the split function on. I made 20 contacts. Thanks to the hunters and p2p.
