Making Isopropyl Chloride: A Secondary Alkyl Halide
Welcome to Episode 11 of Molecular Playground! In this video, I make isopropyl chloride! This compound carries the isopropyl group. It is especially valuable in aromatic reactions. It can be used to make phenol, catechol, and hydroquinone through the cumene process as well as propofol, a quick-acting general anesthesic.
WARNING:
This reaction creates a considerable amount of hydrogen chloride gas, a very acidic and highly toxic gas. Perform with caution and plenty of ventilation!

White Fuming Nitric Acid is a potent and highly reactive oxidizing agent. It can easily nitrate alcohols as well as perform nitrolysis and aromatic nitrations. In addition, it is widely used in industrial settings for rocket propellants, explosives, and chemical synthesis.
WARNING:
Nitric Acid is a very strong oxidizer that can ignite many organic compounds and destroy metals. Handle with CAUTION! And always wear your safety equipment!

Making Gunpowder with Sodium Nitrate

The theory behind this episode is that sodium nitrate packs more punch per pound than potassium nitrate, 19% more to be exact. This is because in sodium nitrate, 73% of the salt is nitrate versus 61% in potassium nitrate.

Making Anhydrous Aluminum Chloride
In Episode 2 of Pour & Play, we make aluminum chloride anhydrously. Simply adding hydrochloric acid to aluminum produces a chemically worthless product (hard-to-clean metal sludge and very noxious fumes). This is because aluminum chloride binds to water so strongly that any attempt to dehydrate it will instead oxidize the product into aluminum oxychloride. Anhydrous aluminum chloride though is an extremely valuable reagent in Organic Chemistry. It can rapidly catalyze reactions pertaining to aromatic compounds and movement of electrons.

Making Acetone Peroxide
We start at Level 1: Pour & Play. In this Molecular Playground series, you will learn basic experiments that create practical products in a single step—beginning with Acetone Peroxide. Acetone Peroxide is best used for initiating free-radical halogenations and polymerizations as it is cheap and much easier to make than benzoyl peroxide.
Warning:
DO NOT Test this at home. Acetone Peroxide is extremely flammable when wet and extremely explosive when dry. I worked with the wet quantity to perform this fire show. Do not detonate dry acetone peroxide like this! This is for demonstration purposes only.
