Making Acetone Peroxide
We start at Level 1: Pour & Play. In this Molecular Playground series, you will learn basic experiments that create practical products in a single step—beginning with Acetone Peroxide. Acetone Peroxide is best used for initiating free-radical halogenations and polymerizations as it is cheap and much easier to make than benzoyl peroxide.
Warning:
DO NOT Test this at home. Acetone Peroxide is extremely flammable when wet and extremely explosive when dry. I worked with the wet quantity to perform this fire show. Do not detonate dry acetone peroxide like this! This is for demonstration purposes only.

Making Gunpowder with Sodium Nitrate
Welcome to Episode 9 of Molecular Playground! In this episode, I make gunpowder using sodium nitrate instead of potassium nitrate. This is the Finale of the Pour & Play series!
The theory behind this episode is that sodium nitrate packs more punch per pound than potassium nitrate, 19% more to be exact. This is because in sodium nitrate, 73% of the salt is nitrate versus 61% in potassium nitrate.
Warning:
Gunpowder fires can get very big and easily burn out of control DO NOT TRY AT HOME!

Making Hexamine
Welcome to Episode 8 of Molecular Playground! In this episode, I make the highly energetic compound known as Hexamine! Hexamine has broad applications in camping fuel tablets, military-grade explosives, and organic reactions!
The science behind its synthesis is simple! Ammonia condenses with formaldehyde into a cage-like molecule with the structure of adamantane! This form packs a lot of energy into one gram—30 kilojoules in fact!—making it perfect for sustaining fires or packing more punch in demolitions!
Warning:
Hexamine fires can get very hot! Take necessary precautions when handling!

Making Chloroform
Welcome to Episode 6 of Molecular Playground! I perform haloform reaction by creating chloroform from two common substances: acetone and pool chlorinating liquid. It's not just an experiment; it's a journey into the heart of organic chemistry!
Mixing acetone with sodium hypochlorite initiates a chemical reaction known as the haloform reaction which leads to the formation of chloroform. This reaction isn't just about combining ingredients; it's a perfect example of how halogenation works in organic compounds!
Warning:
Chloroform is extremely pungent and a powerful solvent! Handle with gloves and plenty of ventilation!

Making Anhydrous Aluminum Chloride
In Episode 2 of Pour & Play, we make aluminum chloride anhydrously. Simply adding hydrochloric acid to aluminum produces a chemically worthless product (hard-to-clean metal sludge and very noxious fumes). This is because aluminum chloride binds to water so strongly that any attempt to dehydrate it will instead oxidize the product into aluminum oxychloride. Anhydrous aluminum chloride though is an extremely valuable reagent in Organic Chemistry. It can rapidly catalyze reactions pertaining to aromatic compounds and movement of electrons.
Warning:
Chlorine Gas involved. DO NOT try this at home. This is for demonstration purposes only.
