Milestone Day for our LGD (& Ice Storm 2022 Damage?) // VLOG
Our livestock guardian dog, Virgil, had a BIG day last week and we’re excited to update you on how his training is progressing. Plus, Ragon walks you around the farm to show off the damage (or lack thereof) from the February 2022 ice storm.
Virgil is a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. We brought him to our farm as an 11 week old puppy one year ago. Watching him grow has been a lot of fun but it hasn’t been without its challenges. Livestock guardian dogs are very strong and powerful – they are supposed to be intimidating – so if their temperament is left unchecked they can cause a lot of destruction to the very animals they are supposed to protect. For this reason we are bringing Virgil along slowly. He is not left unattended with his animals, but we do keep them near to him at all times so he can learn their scents and let his instincts come along naturally. We are not dog trainers, just a family doing our best to show you how we are raising our dog.
Last week we got hit with a round of ice that had everybody in the area scrambling. For good reason too; in 2009 we got an ice storm that left many (including yours truly) without power for weeks. So when meteorologists were again predicting that ice accumulations up to ¾” or more were possible, everybody stocked up on gasoline and made sure their generators were in working order, preparing for the worst. Thankfully it didn’t get all that bad and we didn’t even lose power (though many in our county were without electricity for a day or so) and everybody and everything on our farm came out just fine.
There are lots of exciting things happening around the farm: we are preparing to welcome baby goats in a few weeks, a new beef steer (or two) will arrive in a month or so, and we’re going to get our garden plot ready for spring. Be sure you’re subscribed so you won’t miss another video. Thank you and see y’all soon!

They said we EXPLOIT our Farm Animals!
Farms and homesteads get a lot of grief from “animal rights” activists online. When somebody, presumably a vegan, smarted off in a comment about how we as a small farm exploit our animals Megan took that personally. If you stand with us please consider subscribing to the channel, we’d sure love to have you stick around!
If you’re new around here we are Ragon and Megan, and we are raising our family and a handful of critters on about 10 acres in Western Kentucky. We want to put our land to work for us so we raise chickens, dairy goats, and put a beef steer in the freezer each year. It is our goal to be as self-sufficient as possible so we try to raise as much of our own meat as we can and this year we’re attempting to do better with a garden as well. We haven’t been doing this very long but we are learning every day and enjoying every second of it. It is hard work, but it’s important to us that our children know where food comes from and know how important it is to be a good steward of God’s Creation.
Animal rights activists and vegans, however, believe they know better than us, even though they’ve never spent a moment in our lives, caring for our animals, or doing what we do. They don’t know how much work goes into this because they don’t care to know.
T
he world is a big place and things aren’t often black and white. While it’s easy to sit behind a keyboard and mouth off in a comment section about how farms exploit their animals, until you understand the big picture you don’t come off as caring, you come off as ignorant.
Thank you so much for spending your time watching our channel. If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing so you won’t miss the next video. See y’all soon!

Ground Venison Jerky // Make Deer Jerky with Jerky Gun, Dehydrator, & Hi Mountain Seasoning Kit
We use almost all of our ground venison to make homemade deer jerky. We love trying new flavors, too, and the Hi Mountain Jerky Makers Variety Pack contains the jerky cure, a handful of delicious seasonings, and some very helpful instructions.
I think literally every person I know loves deer jerky – once you start eating it’s almost impossible to stop. To make jerky from ground venison we use a LEM jerky gun and a LEM dehydrator. We’re also using a seasoning kit from Hi Mountain that had everything we needed to get started. We made this batch using the Cajun blend, but our favorite from Hi Mountain is the Cracked Pepper & Garlic.
Add the seasoning, cure, and some ice water (follow the instructions) to the meat and mix everything together for a few minutes. Then let it sit in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight. The next day we ran the meat through our jerky gun to make a whole bunch of sticks (we prefer the flat profile, but the LEM jerky gun comes with both a flat and round tip).
We cooked our jerky in the dehydrator for 4 hours at 160°F. The cook time will vary greatly depending on the size of your jerky sticks, whether they’re flat or round, and your cooking method (dehydrator, oven, pellet grill, etc.) The MOST important thing is to make sure your jerky is fully cooked to the proper internal temperature – everybody likes jerky but nobody wants to get sick.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you want to see more like it please be sure to subscribe to the channel. I think before too long I’m going to try this on the pellet grill. Comment down below if you want to see anything else in particular!

A Time for Everything // Ecclesiastes 3 {Devotional}
Motherhood is hard, and balancing the needs of my kids, my husband, my homestead, and myself can be overwhelming at times. But during my Bible study time one day last week I read a few verses that really brought me peace of mind.
-
Ecclesiastes 3 – Everything Has Its Time
1 To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
2 A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
3 A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
4 A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
6 A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
-
Lately things have been hard. The kids have been stuck inside a lot lately because we’re in the middle of winter; we have one child going through the Terrible Twos/Threes, and a two month old that needs constant attention. Plus the constant attention the farm requires and trying to keep a happy marriage while maintaining my own sanity, it’s a struggle. But I find peace in God’s Word, and I know that He is with me in all that I do. Things may be hard right now but this is only a season, and seasons change much faster than you think.

The BEST Advice for Young Homesteaders
Homesteading is hard and it always feels like there are a thousand things that need to be done. This bit of advice could make a huge difference in your perspective and, if you work hard enough, could help you build the farm of your dreams. We also check in on our Nigerian Dwarf does – we should have babies on the ground in a few more weeks!
-
You can donate to the Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund here: https://secure.kentucky.gov/formservices/Finance/WKYRelief
Many individual communities have urgent needs as well. Contact local emergency management personnel to find out what items – like shampoo, blankets, diapers, etc. – are needed and where they can be donated. The Kentucky towns of Bremen and Mayfield are near and dear to our hearts, but Benton, Eddyville, Princeton, Dawson Springs, and many others were greatly impacted as well.
Thank you and God bless.

On a farm (and life in general) there is always something going on. I can speak from my own personal experience that my to-do list has never once gotten shorter, no matter how much I get done. It’s hard to stay caught up and sometimes you can just feel downright overwhelmed. But recently I came across this piece of advice from another farm family I follow (Bar 7 Ranch on TikTok) and it really helped me put things into perspective. Do something every day to improve your farm. It doesn’t have to be something big; it can be as simple as picking up a rock or tying a wire, but it just needs to be done. If you’re faithful in this then over the course of your life you’ll see a huge difference.
While we were down in the barn we also checked in with the dairy goat gals and how they’re progressing through their pregnancy. At the point we *think* that everybody has been bred and now we get to play the waiting game. We expect Violet will be the first one to kid (she’s the most experienced mama and was the first to be bred) with Brandi and Annie coming soon after. Our Kiko x Savanna Bonnie may even give us another baby or two this time, as well!
Our first goat kids should be hitting the ground in early March so if you want to see that when it happens then please subscribe to the channel! It’s great having you around. See y’all soon!

How to Carve Pumpkins for Chickens | FAST & EASY
Pumpkins are basically a super-food for chickens, and a 12 gauge shotgun makes about a million bite-size chunks for your chickens to easily nibble on! Not to mention that shooting pumpkins is super fun, and it gave me a great opportunity to teach my children about gun safety.

Autumn has come and gone and now we’re in rotting pumpkin season (AKA winter). All our friends know that when it’s time to toss those fall decorations to give us a call because our chickens LOVE pumpkins. Pumpkins have several beneficial vitamins and nutrients that are good for a chicken’s health, which makes for happy, healthier chickens and therefore happier farmers.
We had a lot of fun with this video but it was also a great opportunity to teach my two oldest kids about gun safety. They’re going to grow up around firearms and I firmly believe that it is imperative that from a very young age they understand guns are serious business.
In case you’re wondering, I’m about 15 yards away from these pumpkins, shooting a Mossberg 535 with a modified choke. 2-3/4” shell with a fairly hot bird load (these are handloads and I don’t have the powder charge or the shot size in front of me at the time of writing this).

How do you Homestead with 3 Young Children? – Prepping the Barn for Snow and Extreme Cold
Homesteading is such a rewarding experience but it’s not without its challenges, and adding young kids into the mix has a tendency to slow work down as well. How can one person get anything done, especially in the winter when daylight is short and the animals need new bedding before a cold snap?
-

Ragon works a full-time job off the farm and with only one parent at home to take care of three kids some days are more productive than others. Mother Nature never sleeps, however, and when there’s a bad cold snap in the forecast we have to prioritize getting the barn ready for our animals. It’s not easy with children, and things tend to take a lot longer than expected, so sometimes you just have to make do. And really, as bad as it sounds, maybe you just need to lower your expectations.
★ Livestock Bedding Score Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10O-qgFIcXusL6D_gd_Jf3KD0mSuVyU6g/view?usp=sharing
Lowering expectations isn’t always a bad thing, though. Patience is a virtue, and slowing down and learning to enjoy the journey (not just the finish line) is a part of this life that we really enjoy. And especially in the case of children, watching them learn about the world around them is one of the most rewarding parts of parenthood.

Prepping the Goat Herd for Snow and Bad Weather
Tornadoes one day and snow literally the next – Kentucky weather seems to get crazier every year. How do we keep our goats happy, healthy, and safe when inclement weather pops up and Mother Nature doesn’t want to play nice?

If you live in Kentucky you undoubtedly have heard the phrase “If you don’t like the weather stick around, it’ll change.” This has never felt truer than it has this past weekend. After a week of unseasonably warm weather (we celebrated Christmas in shorts and t-shirts) Mother Nature reared her ugly head. Inches of rain fell, flash flooding occurred in low-lying areas, and a tornado even popped up in the next town over. But then the bottom fell out of the temperature and we had about a quarter inch of snow the very next day!
★ Livestock Bedding Score Chart: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10O-qgFIcXusL6D_gd_Jf3KD0mSuVyU6g/view?usp=sharing
Extreme temperature swings are hard on everybody and farm animals are no different. When it gets cold we have to take a few extra precautions to keep our critters warm and healthy. Keeping their bedding dry when its driving snow or rain is very important because it dry bedding insulates the goats from the cold temperatures. We also bring our entire herd into one barn stall so they can huddle together however they see fit, isolating the youngest ones so our buck doesn’t pester the young girls (they get a heat lamp). And then plenty of hay and clean water keeps their rumens active so they are constantly generating their own heat.
Temperatures are forecasted to drop even lower before week’s end so our goal is to get them some new, fresh straw before that happens. Subscribe to the channel if you’re enjoying these videos so you won’t miss the next one. Thanks for watching!

HUGE shop improvement! This changes EVERYTHING!
We cleaned up my messy and disorganized workshop by building a wall! The transformation in my shop is incredible. We framed the wall up, ran power to the new receptacle outlet boxes, and sheeted with OSB. This project has been a long time coming and it will make a huge difference going forward!

Before we bought our farm all my tools were organized in the garage at our house. When we moved I upgraded to this nice 36’x30’ pole barn, but there has been one huge problem – there’s nowhere to store anything! I’ve been wanting to frame up a wall for over a year but with the price of lumber being sky high I haven’t been able to prioritize this project.
I recently came across some free lumber and decided to make my own 2x4s to frame the wall. I bought the OSB sheeting and electrical components I needed, enlisted the help of a good friend, and knocked this thing out. At the end I added some French cleats to make hanging cabinets a little easier.
I am thrilled to have this desperately needed improvement completed! It’s been a long time coming and it’s going to make a huge different going forward; now I’ll be able to get work done much more efficiently since my shop will be cleaner and my tools will be organized. If you want to see more make sure you’re subscribed to the channel! See y’all soon!

There’s an old adage: if your marriage can survive a barn build, it can survive anything (or is that kitchen remodels?). Megan wants to build a new enclosure for the goats and we can’t come to agreement on the fine details. Oh, and these goats, they’re little troublemakers!

Megan wants to build a new enclosure for the goats – something of a rain shelter and an isolation pen when needed. However, we can’t seem to settle on what material for the floor. What do you think is the best solution? Do you have any ideas you’d like to share? Let us know in the comments below!
Before we jump into the barn discussion, Ragon and Keeton work to patch the fence where our precious goats are escaping into the woods. It was basically a complete bust but at least I got to spend time with my oldest boy.

Luke 2
8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
