Fall Breeding Season is Here! Let’s Grow the Goat Herd
Fall breeding season is here and it’s Benji the Buck Goat’s time to shine! New baby goat kids incoming Spring 2022. Plus we give an update on baby goat kid Minnie Pearl’s broken leg.
Benji is an 18 month old Nigerian Dwarf buck who has been on the farm since February 2021. He has a great temperament and we are very excited to introduce his genes into the future generations of the GWP Goat Herd. Our goal for our goat herd is to develop strong milk lines and make our own dairy products and soaps. Benji, as well as our does Brandi, Annie, and Violet (and her kids) are all ADGA registered, so we have high hopes for our herd.
★ Dairy Goats: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiBilDABA650oM728fQNRnnKVmw0od3hd
Since everyone was out and about we brought Minnie Pearl on camera as well. She recently fractured her leg (we have no idea how) but the swelling has gone down quite a bit in the past couple of days and she’s doing much better. The veterinarian expects her to make a full recovery in time but for now she’ll stay on stall rest!

Minnie Pearl is HURT! Is it SERIOUS this time?
Our goat kid Minnie Pearl is back at the veterinarian with yet another ailment. What happened this time? Is it serious?
★ Dairy Goats: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiBilDABA650oM728fQNRnnKVmw0od3hd
This little girl has had more issues than any of our other goats to this point. She was the runt of four goat kids born to Violet in the spring of 2021. There are concerns associated with that and you always worry if they’ll pull through, but Minnie Pearl is a fighter and is now about 5 months old. After she was disbudded she came down with pneumonia but Megan caught it in time and was able to get it treated. But the other day she came up lame with some minor swelling in one of her front legs, and when it worsened over the next couple of days we knew it was time to make another trip to the vet.
After an X-ray the veterinarian determined that Pearl actually had a small break in her leg. We aren’t sure exactly what caused it, but it will heal on its own in time! So Pearl will be isolated from the rest of the herd (with her sister Calamity Jane for company) for a little while until she’s all healed up.

Why You NEED a Chicken Saddle for your Hens
“Sometimes roosters are just buttholes.” Having a rooster in your flock has a few benefits but there are also drawbacks, one of them being that he can rub the feathers off a hen’s back. If you have a rooster that’s hard on his favorite girls then a chicken saddle might be the perfect solution for you!
In our experience roosters have two main goals in life: 1.) To be fruitful and multiply and 2.) Make your life as difficult as possible. Sometimes there’s significant overlap between the two! When chickens breed the rooster will mount the hen and do his thang. If he has one or a few favorites then over time he can rub the feathers off the hen’s back. A chicken saddle helps protect your hen by providing a barrier between the rooster and the hen.
You can buy these saddles but if you or someone you know is skilled with a sewing machine they can be made pretty easily for just the cost of materials (thanks Aunt Deb). We bought one saddle and used it as a template for the others.

Let’s be honest with each other for a minute. The days of Larry the Lavender Orpington are numbered. He’s a pest, he’s hard on the girls, and he wants to flog anything that moves. We’ve tried to love the hate out of him but if he’s going to be a jerk to our kids he’ll be in the soup pot. If that interests you, then subscribe to the channel! The Mega Cone is GONE! Post-Surgery with Virgil the LGD
Time for the Mega Cone of Shame to come off! Our livestock guardian dog Virgil’s post-surgery check-up went great and the vet pulled his stitches so it’s time to take the cone off and get our boy back his regular self.
★ Livestock Guardian Dogs | How we're raising our LGD: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiBilDABA652-4EWfReM5C67XDHV4EvWn
Two weeks ago Virgil went to the veterinarian for a neuter and dewclaw removal. Virgil is a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix; both breeds have double dewclaws on their hind feet. Whatever purpose they once served has largely been lost and at the recommendation of our vet we had them removed. Of course our Virgil is extra-special and it took him about 25 seconds to outsmart his 30cm cone of shame and we had to go back to the vet and get a 40cm cone that we affectionately dubbed “The Mega Cone.”
Side note: Virgil and his Mega Cone kind of blew up on TikTok (7.7 million views and counting). It’s been a crazy couple of weeks!
Virgil is now all healed up and the cone can come off. It’s nice having our boy back and it feels like he’s happier now that he doesn’t have to wear that lampshade anymore. We hope it won’t be too much longer before he gets to move in with the goats 100% of the time!
Thanks for watching this video and for keeping up with our family. We’ve experienced a lot of growth lately and I can’t thank you enough for your time and your subscription. Take care and we’ll see you soon!

Dutch Oven Cinnamon Rolls | DELICIOUS & EASY Camping Breakfast!
Take your camping breakfasts to the next level with this super easy and delicious meal! A can of cinnamon rolls pack easily in your cooler and cook in about 15 minutes. Pair with some bacon and eggs and you’ve got a meal that will keep your camp crew happy and ready to take on the day!
★ Charcoal briquette guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GJ-HDhw9HrO1_RfPF6QIezTo_gFSGsuL/view?usp=sharing
Before you do anything get some charcoal briquettes going. Use the picture file linked above to ballpark estimate how many briquettes you’ll need both underneath and on top of the Dutch oven. I recommend saving this picture to your phone so you can reference it over and over. For these cinnamon rolls the Dough Boy recommends cooking between 375°F-400°F so we started a little more than 30 briquettes in a charcoal chimney.
We started by cooking a few pieces of bacon in our Dutch oven to grease the bottom of the pan. We then added some margarine as well – you do NOT want the rolls to stick to the pan!
Lay the desired amount of charcoal briquettes out to distribute heat evenly underneath the Dutch oven, then move the oven over the briquettes. Place the cinnamon rolls into the oven, cover with the lid, then add the desired amount of briquettes to the lid so cooking is done from both above and below. Set a timer, kick back with a cup of coffee, and enjoy the wait.
For me, it’s worth it to check the cinnamon rolls about a minute or so before the timer goes off. A burnt biscuit or cinnamon roll is the worst and if you need to flip the rolls (like we did) to finish the top of the rolls off then you’ve got time to do that. Once they’re done to your liking carefully remove them from the Dutch oven, top with icing, and serve.

WHAT IS HAPPENING??
Well we’ve had ourselves a crazy few days! Our livestock guardian dog, Virgil, and his Mega Cone of Shame went viral on TikTok and our following over there completely exploded. It was overwhelming, exciting, and completely unexpected. So now what?
Let’s start with a little background on the matter. You’re probably aware that we’re trying to share our lives on the farm with a community online (why else would we be making videos, right?). We’re on YouTube obviously, but we’re playing around with Instagram and TikTok as well. Well the other day Virgil went to the veterinarian for a neuter and dewclaw removal and to keep him from chewing on his stitches he was prescribed a vet cone (“The Cone of Shame” for you Disney fans). But the 30cm cone wasn’t large enough and Virgil figured out he could stretch his long legs in front of his face and nibble on his incisions that way. Thankfully the vet had a 40cm cone in stock and after another trip to their office Virgil was set.
We posted a one minute long video to TikTok to show how absurdly large this 40cm cone was. By the next morning the video was taking off and now a few days later we have well over 3 million views (closing in on 4 million) and our following has increased by almost twentyfold. WHAT?!?
It’s been a whirlwind lately and we’re so thankful to have had this moment in our homestead-documentation journey. We’re excited and grateful to see what happens next! Thank you all for watching and for subscribing, it really means the world to us!

Virgil got fixed! Livestock guardian dog training
Our LGD Virgil is nine months old and it was time for him to have a couple procedures done. What happened, and how is his training coming along?
★ Livestock Guardian Dogs | How we're raising our LGD:
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiBilDABA652-4EWfReM5C67XDHV4EvWn
Virgil is now nine months old and it’s time for him to get fixed. Some LGDs can be prone to roaming (actually almost every dog I’ve ever had was prone to roaming, too) so we’re hoping that by neutering him it will tamp down some of that desire. Waiting until nine months of age to neuter him was done at our veterinarian’s recommendation. The vet also recommended removing Virgil’s double dew claws on his hind feet. Many LGD breeds evolved double dew claws over time to help with navigating rough terrain. Nowadays those dew claws pose more potential problems than rewards as they can be ripped off, requiring an emergency vet visit and a lot of pain to the animal. Virgil will have to wear the cone of shame for two weeks but once his stitches come out he’ll be back to his old self.
Megan also gives an update on how his training is going and how he’s doing with the goats and chickens. We’re proud of our not-so-little LGD and how he’s progressing.
If you have any questions, comments, or recommendations on what we’re doing drop them in the comment section below. Thank you for watching our channel and for subscribing as well, we really appreciate it. See y’all soon!

Jethro gets to STAY on the farm but there’s a BIG catch!
We decided to keep one of our little boy goats on the farm, but there’s a BIG catch! I think Riley is excited that her buckling gets to hang around, though.
Jethro was one of the four goat kids born on the farm earlier this year. The two doelings, Calamity Jane and Minnie Pearl, were always going to be kept as we continue to grow our herd. One of the boys who we called Gibbs was sold a few weeks ago and he’ll have a great life on another farm. The other boy, Jethro, never sold, and instead of offering him up for less than what he was worth we decided to keep him and wether him.
A wether is a castrated male goat or sheep. Goats are herd animals and don’t do well without companions. Benji, our herd buck, needs a buddy when he is not with the girls, and our other wether Clyde, doesn’t like being separated from his sister Bonnie (he’s pretty useless but at least he helps keep the field mowed down). We’re wethering Jethro using a process called banding, which cuts off the circulation to his boy-parts and after several weeks to months they’ll fall off. It’s really a simple and painless process.
Thanks for watching our channel and spending your time keeping up with our family. If you haven’t already please consider subscribing so you won’t miss another video. See y’all soon!
