Milestone Day for our LGD (& Ice Storm 2022 Damage?) // VLOG

Our livestock guardian dog, Virgil, had a BIG day last week and we’re excited to update you on how his training is progressing. Plus, Ragon walks you around the farm to show off the damage (or lack thereof) from the February 2022 ice storm.

Virgil is a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd mix. We brought him to our farm as an 11 week old puppy one year ago. Watching him grow has been a lot of fun but it hasn’t been without its challenges. Livestock guardian dogs are very strong and powerful – they are supposed to be intimidating – so if their temperament is left unchecked they can cause a lot of destruction to the very animals they are supposed to protect. For this reason we are bringing Virgil along slowly. He is not left unattended with his animals, but we do keep them near to him at all times so he can learn their scents and let his instincts come along naturally. We are not dog trainers, just a family doing our best to show you how we are raising our dog.

Last week we got hit with a round of ice that had everybody in the area scrambling. For good reason too; in 2009 we got an ice storm that left many (including yours truly) without power for weeks. So when meteorologists were again predicting that ice accumulations up to ¾” or more were possible, everybody stocked up on gasoline and made sure their generators were in working order, preparing for the worst. Thankfully it didn’t get all that bad and we didn’t even lose power (though many in our county were without electricity for a day or so) and everybody and everything on our farm came out just fine.

There are lots of exciting things happening around the farm: we are preparing to welcome baby goats in a few weeks, a new beef steer (or two) will arrive in a month or so, and we’re going to get our garden plot ready for spring. Be sure you’re subscribed so you won’t miss another video. Thank you and see y’all soon!
