Poodle with Lens Luxation
Our 14 year old poodle's right eye started becoming cloudy. At first we thought that it was just age related. Within a weeks time it started getting really bad and knew we had to get her to the vet. Our vet said that she had lens luxation and that her lens had moved forward. She said that surgery was available but didn't really recommend it due to her age and sent us home with some eye drops and pills to keep her comfortable. After studying up on dog lens luxation I am beginning to think that I might need to get another opinion.
What is lens luxation?
The crystalline lens is suspended behind the pupil where it helps to direct light rays onto the retina, where a visual image is formed. The lens is normally held in place by thin fibres called ‘zonules’.
In some patients, these zonules can break down and as a result, the lens becomes instable and starts to move within the eye. Initially, the lens is likely to only be a little bit ‘wobbly’ and it may sink towards the lower part of the pupil. This often happens without you noticing and only an experienced ophthalmologist is likely to be able to pick up the earliest signs of lens luxation with special eye examination equipment. However, with time, the lens may become fully detached and will start to move freely. If the lens falls into the back of the eye, it may not be noticed for quite some time – but it is more likely that the lens will slip into the front of the eye – where it becomes stuck between cornea and iris. This is likely to cause acute pain and vision loss and you may notice that your dog’s eye is sore and blue. Lenses that are trapped in the front of the eye are likely to cause increases in intraocular pressure - termed glaucoma – which can be blinding. Emergency treatment is usually required for lenses that have luxated into the front of the eye and your vet usually will try and recommend urgent referral upon diagnosis.
Have you had a dog that has had this? What are your thoughts?

Back Yard Fishing
I've got a friend who told me last spring that he didn't want to set up his pool this year because it was too much work to clean it and keep it clean. I told him he should just fill it with fish and use it as a fishing pond. I was shocked when I found out that he took me seriously.

Have Yourself A Merry Little Xmas
Christmas lights(also known asfairy lights, festive lightsorstring lights) are lights often used for decoration in celebration ofChristmas, often on display throughout theChristmas seasonincludingAdventandChristmastide. The custom goes back to when Christmas trees were decorated with andles whichsymbolizedChrist being thelight of the world. This custom was borrowed from pagan yule rituals that celebrate the return of the light of the sun as the days grow longer after solstice: the evergreen trees symbolising the renewal and continuance of life in dark times. The Christmas trees were brought by Christians into their homes inearly modern Germany.
Christmas trees displayed publicly and illuminated with electric lights became popular in the early 20th century. By the mid-20th century, it became customary to display strings of electric lights along streets and on buildings; Christmas decorations detached from the Christmas tree itself. In the United States, it became popular to outline private homes with such Christmas lights intract housingbeginning in the 1960s. By the late 20th century, the custom had also been adopted in other nations, including outside the Western world, notably inJapanandHong Kong.
In many countries, Christmas lights, as well as otherChristmas decorations, are traditionally erected on or around thefirst dayofAdvent. In the Western Christian world, the two traditional days when Christmas lights are removed are Twelfth Night and Candlemas, the latter of which ends theChristmas-Epiphany season in somedenominations. Leaving the decorations up beyond Candlemas is historically considered to be inauspicious.

Home Remedy for Arthritis
My arthritis has been getting worse lately so I started looking into some home remedies. The that seems to be the most popular is a mixture of Certo liquid pectin and white grape juice. Just mix 1 tablespoon of Certo with 8 ounces of white grape juice. Drink this once a day.
Certo is a plant pectin used to thicken jams and jellies. This remedy has been known to work since the 1940's.
According to the Eruropean Journal of Clinical Nutrition in May of 2012, Pectin has been shown to lower cholesterol and blood sugar and it may have anticancer activity.
Grape juice contains antioxidant polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds also dilate blood vessels and improve circulation. They may also enhanceimmune function.
I'm going to give this a try and see if it works for me. I will give an update at another time and let you know.

Instant Vortex Plus Review
I recently purchased an Instant Vortex Plus and wanted to share my review on it.
This multi function cooking appliance has become my new go to tool for cooking. Not only is it an air fryer, but it can also be used to roast, broil, bake, reheat, and dehydrate. It come with everything that you need to get started. So far I have used it to make french fries, burritos, fried shrimp, crab cakes, hot wings, and beef jerky.
My next test which I will try today is a big one. I will try to fry some catfish. If it passes this test then I know that it is perfect for us.
If you are in the market for an air fryer I highly recommend this one.

Jerky made with the Instant Vortex Plus
This video shows how to make jerky using ground meat in the Instant Vortex Plus system. I used the same ingredients that I would use in my regular dehydrator but had to tweak the temp and time a little from what is shown on the video.
Ingredients:
5 lbs of ground venison or beef
4 1/2 tsp salt
3/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp ground red pepper
2 1/2 tbsp meat tenderizer
3/4 tbsp black pepper
3 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce or Tamari
1/2 cup liquid smoke
1/2 cup ketchup
The one adjustment that I had to make from my video is to raise the temperature to 160 deg for 5-6 hours. This was the first time that I made jerky on this new machine so I found that this setting worked better.
This batch turned out so good that you could hear my wife in the background saying awesome.
