Finally, the word went out to local union offices, miners’ clubs, and soup kitchens: the mass picket at Orgreave 18 June was a priority. The two NUM officials who had been issued with video cameras described what they saw that day and posed questions that were not followed through: Why were the police there in such strength? Who alerted the television crews? When the National Coal Board and the government were first alerted that Orgreave might become a target the alarm bells had rung. There was no way that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was going to allow Scargill to repeat his 1972 victory when a mass picket closed the Saltley coke works at Birmingham and forced her predecessor Ted Heath to concede a 27 per cent pay rise to the NUM. Winning “The Battle of Saltley Gate” was – as Scargill has frequently said -- the proudest moment of his life but was acknowledged within the government as a disaster when it came to policing industrial unrest; furthermore, it was a retreat that was seared into the political memory of the Conservative Party. She told the Home Office to give the South Yorkshire force “every support”; in the corner of one document was her hand-written note asking: “Can we provide the funds direct?” One document which also caught my eye among the many official papers was from the Department of Energy, dated 5 June 1984, which notified the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire that British Steel wanted to clear the remaining 8,000 tons of coke from Orgreave to Scunthorpe by road in the week commencing Monday 18 June – they very day that Scargill had chosen for the mass picket. The police action needed to be “part of a carefully conceived and well executed operation” … “to minimise any opportunity for the NUM to claim a victory.” The timing of this government intervention helped to explain why so many police reinforcements were present on 18 June. Convoys of lorries started taking coke from Orgreave to the Scunthorpe steelworks on 25 May and as the picketing intensified police used riot gear and mounted police for the first time on 29 May; the following day Scargill was arrested for obstruction. By informing South Yorkshire police on 5 June of that the final clearance of coke from Orgreave would commence on 18 June, the Department of Energy had given the national reporting centre ample time to organise additional support from forces around the country. There had already been a taste of what was to come at the dress rehearsal on 29 May when South Yorkshire said 41 officers were injured, 28 pickets hurt and 82 arrested. Sophisticated police surveillance during the strike – including the extensive use of phone tapping – would undoubtedly have picked up news of the NUM’s plan to make Orgreave the focus for picketing on 18 June. The two NUM officials explained why Scargill had wanted to picket Orgreave from day one. His theory was that if the NUM could stop coke being moved to Scunthorpe it would close the steel works, halt production at other plants and force negotiations that would “resolve the dispute”. The party did not oppose new cuts to National Insurance in last week's Budget. But the Labour leadership believes they have found a way to turn the tables on the Conservatives when it comes to economic competence. Labour is still licking its wounds over its £28bn green prosperity plan - a pledge that was diluted last month under sustained attack over how it would be funded. So, Labour has been quick to attach a price tag - a whopping £46bn - to the Conservatives' "ambition" to do away with National Insurance. This was branded by Sir Keir as an "unfunded pledge". This is despite Chancellor Jeremy Hunt making clear it would only happen when fiscal and economic conditions allow - and that it could not happen overnight But as Liz Kendall put it in a speech - ostensibly about pensions - on Wednesday morning: "If Labour made a commitment 100 times smaller than this we would rightly be asked to spell out - where is the money coming from?" "Will it be paid for by higher borrowing? Or spending cuts to vital public services?" At PMQs, Sir Keir suggested it would come at the expense of health expenditure or pensions. Challenging the prime minister in the Commons, he said that 80% of National Insurance is spent on social security and pensions, and 20% on the NHS. So, if pensions or NHS were not to be cut, the government would have to raise other taxes or borrow money. Soon after, Labour released a dossier claiming that a "pensions bombshell" was in the offing - echoing the successful Conservative warning of a Labour "tax bombshell" at the 1992 election. What is driving all this is not just a desire for revenge over the beaten and battered £28bn green investment pledge. Labour held post-Budget focus groups last weekend, and they found that those questions resonated with key voters. Certainly, national insurance contributions can determine how much state pension you qualify for. So if National Insurance were to go, there was a worry amongst these voters about how pensions would be paid for - a concern Labour has been keen to amplify. But on health spending, previous attempts to 'hypothecate' - or earmark - NICs for specific public services have been abandoned. For example, the health and social care levy on National Insurance - proposed by Rishi Sunak as Chancellor - was scrapped by Liz Truss and never re-introduced. So worries about National Insurance cuts being linked to NHS cuts are misplaced. Jeremy Hunt has accused Labour of "scaremongering" and has said on X: "The value of NICs receipts do not determine the NHS budget, or the value of pensions." And appearing before the Commons Treasury Committee, the chancellor said complete abolition would not happen in the next Parliament. He stressed it was "a long-term ambition" of the Conservatives. And the Treasury has added that this won't be done in a way which would harm pensioners, compromise public services or increase taxation of workers. Nonetheless, confusion and concern over the government's intentions aren't necessarily unhelpful for Labour.

He disclosed how the UK Border Force had failed to inspect hundreds of private jets which landed at London City Airport last year despite being assessed as 'high-risk'. 'The Home Office is dysfunctional, the Home Office needs reform,' Mr Neal told the BBC's Today Podcast. Mr Neal, the former head of the Royal Military Police, expressed fears the watchdog role would remain unfilled for months while a successor is appointed. 'There will be no scrutiny of small boats, there will be no scrutiny of adults at risk in detention which is a controversial area, there will be no publishing of the Rwanda material,' he said. 'Much of the debate is dominated by asylum, but actually the protection of our borders is a 24/7 activity, that affects every person in this country and that's why it's so critical.' The charity,which does not want to be namedto avoid obstruction to its relief efforts in Gaza,spoke to Middle East Eye in outrage at having to pay what it openly describes as a bribe to a state-linked agent. A spokesman for the charity said: “We have worked around the world in times of war, earthquakes and other disasters, but we have never been treated like this by a state who is profiteering from the dispatch of humanitarian goods. It’s draining a lot of our resources and the bribe being paid is per truck.” The charity said the money is being paid in the form of a “management fee” to a company affiliated with the Sons of Sinai, a construction and contracting firm owned by the Sinai businessman, Ibrahim al-Organi, and part of his Organi Group. He heads the Tarabin tribe in the Sinai desert bordering Israel and owns a company that is a joint venture with two companies owned by the GIS. The Organi Group is alleged in media reports to be the ultimate beneficiary of a lucrative sale of “fast-track” permits for Palestinians wishing to escape from Israel's war on the Gaza Strip. Aninvestigationcarried out by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and independent Egyptian website, Saheeh Masr, found that intermediaries were selling exit permits at prices ranging from$4,500 to $10,000 for Palestinians and$650 to $1,200 for Egyptians. As desperation in Gaza has increased, the price for a passage out of the enclave has gone up to $10,000 per person, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported recently. The price for commercial traffic going intoGaza charged by companies owned by Organi is $9,000 a truck, although the cost of the fare charged by truckers is commonly just $300 a load. A spokesperson for Unrwa, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees providing vital support in Gaza, told Middle East Eye it is not paying fees to transfer aid into the enclave from Egypt. Bleak situation The charity’s statement to MEE is the first concrete evidence of Egypt or Egyptian government-linked parties demanding a cut from the humanitarian aid going into Gaza, which already is subject to weeklong delays incurred by Israel. Earlier this month, James Heappey, the British minister of state for the armed forces, said that over 150 tonnes of humanitarian aid delivered to Egypt by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is waiting to be transferred into Gaza. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is bleak. More than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war broke out in October, and on Sunday, a UN expert said famine in the enclave was “inevitable”. Last week, Middle East Eye spoke to five families from Gazawho all confirmed that they had paid fees in the thousands, mostly in US dollars or euros, to mediators who then facilitated their exit from Gaza. Besan, a Palestinian who arranged for her mother to leave Gaza, said of her Suez-based mediator: “He told us that he works with Egyptian security and that he would pull strings to put our mother’s name on the list.” A parallel “fast-track” system for getting through Rafah has been in place for years, with Gaza-based agents demanding several thousand dollars for quick passage. But this market has boomed since Israel’s ground attack started and the desperation of internally displaced Palestinians has grown. One of the companies allegedly involved in the trade is Hala Consulting and Tourism, an Egyptian travel agency. This is one of eight companies operating under Organi’s chief arm, the Organi Group. Another company in the same group is Misr Sinai, a joint venture with the Egyptian defence ministry’s industrial conglomerate, the National Services Projects Organisation (NSPO) Organi said in aninterview with Youm7in 2014 that the NSPO owned 51 percent of Misr Sinai’s shares, in partnership with two companies owned by the GIS. “As you can see, all state entities are in this company. The dogs would then approach and intimidate me while I had my eyes closed, unable to see anything,” he told Rose al-Yusuf magazine, in a now-deleted interview. It was a few months before millions of Egyptians took part in nationwide protests that ended with the resignation of then-president Hosni Mubarak. The protests were partly triggered by several documented incidents of torture at the hands of police and security officers. “One day, they brought three prisoners on death row, dressed them in women's nightgowns, and invited all detainees to watch them. They told me it would be my turn the next day and attempted to do the same to me," he said. Organi said he suffered a stroke due to torture and ended up at a hospital, partially paralysed. Organi was serving time in jail for kidnapping dozens of police officers after an incident in which his brother was killed by anofficer at acheckpoint in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. He was released about two years later. The same man, now 50 years old, is currently considered one of the closest allies to President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and the Egyptian military. He owns a gigantic business empire spanning construction, quarry mining, travel, hospitality, and private security. Since the Gaza war broke out on 7 October, during which Israel imposed a strict blockade onthe Palestinian enclave,Organi has wielded significant influence on the movement of people and goods between Gaza and neighbouring Egypt through his companies. There have been reports that his companies, some of which are part-owned by the Egyptian security services, have even demanded bribes to allow aid into Gaza and people out of the enclave. Middle East Eye asked the Organi Group and the Egyptian State Information Service for comment but did not receive a response before publication. Along with his business empire, he also heads a controversial Sinai militia known as the Union of Sinai Tribes, which has worked closely with the Egyptian army in its fight against a local Islamic State group affiliatebut now faces an unknown future after the official end of the military operation. Organi has come under increasing media scrutiny since the Gaza war. One independent outlet has labelled Sinai as the “Organi Peninsula”, reflecting his widespread influence in the northeastern region. Another portrayed him as the “Hemeti” of Egypt, drawing analogies between him and the Sudanese warlord Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. But how influential is Organi? Currently, he heads the Union of Sinai Tribes, a paramilitary group mostly made up of members of his own tribe. According to a Sinai tribal source, Organi started his career as a taxi driver in northern Sinai, using his pickup truck. He was also engaged in lucrative smuggling activities to Gaza and Israel, said the source. Organi is also believed to have earned money by charging businessmen who used his tribe’s area for construction projects. The Tarabin,Sawarka, and Romaylat were the subject of aferocious security crackdown in the aftermath of bombings that hit several tourist destinations in south Sinai between 2004 and 2006. The arrest campaign targeted several thousand tribesmen, as well as some women who were detained to force their male relatives to surrender themselves. The crackdown prompted the tribes to organise a series of protests and sit-ins in April and July 2007. The protest movement at the time was referred to in the media as the "We Want to Live" movement ("Wedna Nieesh" in Arabic). Then in his early thirties, Organi participatedin the protests and sit-ins. When Diana began dating Prince Charles, she was thrown into the public eye and there was huge media interest around her and she was often followed by paparazzi. Princess Diana was on holiday in France with Dodi and it is reported that Henri Paul, the driver of the car, approached the entrance of the tunnel at a speed of 70mph when the speed limit was 30mph. Reports say that Henri lost control of the car and crashed into a pillar in the middle of the tunnel. Henri and Dodi were pronounced dead at the scene and Diana was rushed to the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital. It is believed Diana had concussion, a broken arm, a cut thigh, and two serious chest injuries. Doctors operated for two hours to save her life but were unable to get Diana's heart beating properly again. The Princess never regained consciousness and she passed away on August 31 1997. It is widely believed that a seatbelt would have saved Diana's life. Trevor, the only survivor from the crash, had been wearing a seatbelt at the time.

But before we explore that question, let's start with a more important one. Let's be honest with ourselves. If we can look at the situation from beyond the confines of current political discourse, and look at the emperor without his "new" clothes, we all know that Israel does not want peace. They want all of Palestine, and their belligerent settlement practices confirm that. But the Israelis are taking advantage of the world's ignorance of the realities in Palestine, and posturing as being willing to talk "peace", only to actually stall that very peace process, so as not to interrupt the further colonization of Palestine. So anything that can be offered as an excuse, will be. The most convenient ploy, presented with the sycophantic assistance of the media, is that of "terrorism". But the masses are naive, and fail to suspect the Machiavellian extremes that certain leaders will resort to to aggrandize their power. This includes creating a false enemy, in this case, Hamas, whereby the right-wing leadership of the Israelis can point the finger to some "enemy" to blame otehr than themselves for supposedly stalling the process. The use of Islamic terrorism for the political ends of Western nations is nothing new. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1924, the British and Americans stepped in to fill the vacuum by providing their own versions of "Islamic" leaders. This started with the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was created through a grant from the British. Under British sponsorship, the Brotherhood flourished, and today represents a sizeable and powerful force in the Islamic world, but most worryingly, as the institution behind almost every act of terror in the name of Islam. More correctly, the Brotherhood has been a tool shared my numerous Western intelligence agencies, starting with the Nazis, followed by the CIA, but also the Russians, French, Germans and Israelis. Since the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, it has been a staple of foreign policy of the Cold War to exploit the Muslim Brotherhood to rally naive Muslims to reject "atheistic" Communism as an arch enemy of Islam. Ever since, the Americans and others have been able to manage the Brotherhood like a rabid dog on a leash to keep the Communist threat at bay. With the collapse of the Cold War however, the Brotherhood has been used for new imperial objectives, where they pose as the bogey man which the Americans can chase with their armies into the Middle East and Central Asia, starting with Iraq and Afghanistan. But, as NSC official Sheila Haslin explained, in a testimony at Senate hearings into illegal fund-raising activities, US policy in the region was to "promote the independence of these oil-rich countries, to in essence break Russia's monopoly control over the transportation of oil from that region, and frankly, to promote Western energy security through diversity of supply." Israel has also maintained a long-standing relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood, with its most recent manifestation being its participation in the founding of an offshoot organization, Hamas. According to Robert Dreyfuss, who details the US' troubling relationship with Islamic fundamentalism, in "Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam": And beginning in 1967 through the late 1980s, Israel helped the Muslim Brotherhood establish itself in the occupied territories. It assisted Ahmed Yassin, the leader of the Brotherhood, in creating Hamas, betting that its Islamist character would weaken the PLO. According to Charles Freeman, a veteran US diplomat and former US ambassador to Saudi Arabia, "Israel started Hamas. It was a project of Shin Bet [Isreali domestic intelligence agency], which had a feeling that they could use it to hem in the PLO." In 1965, Yassin had been arrested by Egyptian intelligence, but after 1967, when Israel took control of the West Bank and Gaza, Yassin was freed. In 1973, under approval from Shin Bet, Yassin founded the Islamic Center, and began to establish effective control over hundreds of mosques. In 1976, Yassin created the Islamic Association, which membership branches throughout the Gaza Srip, and the movement grew. Israel's formal support for Islamic fundamentalism came with the election of the right-wing Likud party. In 1978, Begin's new government formally licensed Yassin's Islamic Association, as part of a strategy to undermine the power of the PLO.
