The Labour group on the council voted to withdraw support for the proposals and said it was worried about the "impact on low income families". Its move follows concerns raised by Liberal Democrats in Cambridgeshire. Plans to charge motorists at least £5 to drive into or around the city in peak times were due to be discussed at a meeting on Thursday. Under revised plans the charge would have raised around £26m a year and helped pay for an expansion of the bus network. 'Rug was pulled' Councillor Mike Davey, Labour leader of Cambridge City Council, said there were parts of the proposals, known as Making Connections, his group supported but others it did not. But, he added, the "rug was pulled" after the Liberal Democrats said they had "further concerns". Asked how "dead" the plans were, Mr Davey said: "They are not going to go ahead. "There were bits we liked and bits we remained concerned about. "Sustainable travel has not gone away – something is going to have to happen. "Something will have to go ahead because we have a problem with congestion in this city, which is only going to get worse." Avon and Somerset Police tried to prevent Bristol-based pastor Dia Moodley from 'passing comments on any other religion or comparing them to Christianity'. It also sought to stop him displaying 'graphic material'. The Evangelist fundamentalist had become known to the police after holding up signs saying 'abortion is murder' and mocking followers of other religions for failing to acknowledge 'God's truth'. On other occasions the creationist held up signs that read 'all lives matter', 'evolution is a lie' and 'God created them man and woman' - leading to a hostile reaction from passers-by. Mr Moodley, who belongs to the Spirit of Life church, had arranged a meeting with the local policing team after claiming officers had 'done nothing' when members of the public 'spat' at him and 'destroyed' his signs. In turn, Bristol police issued the notice warning that the churchgoer's behaviour was having a detrimental effect on other Bristolians' quality of life. Officers said the preacher had displayed 'graphic material', which included showing images purporting to be mutilated or aborted foetuses, and 'persistently' made 'abusive and insulting statements' in a public space. Police said this had led to crowds becoming 'hostile and responding aggressively' to Mr Moodley and his congregation. The force said the warning – which was issued in October 2021 and expired after six months - followed complaints about the preacher's conduct that had continued for a number of years. In the warning, the force told the Evangelist, or anyone delivering sermons on his behalf, to refrain from using any amplifier or speaker system while preaching or playing recordings of sermons in Bristol. Police also said he should not display graphics or images that are, or purport to be, mutilated or aborted foetuses. Mr Moodley took legal action over the restrictions with the support of the Free Speech Union and ADF International. This criticised the police's notice telling Mr Moodley he could only deliver one one-hour sermon a day that had already been approved by Avon and Somerset Police. They also criticised the police's warning for the preacher not to use 'any words of language that could be considered to negatively affect public health or morals or have the effect of inciting crime and disorder'. Their final complaints lay at the police's warning against the Evangelist passing on any comments on other religions 'or comparing them to Christianity while in a public area. They also rejected the police's warning that Mr Moodley should not be able to comment on 'beliefs held by atheists or those who believe in evolution whilst addressing the public'. Last night a lawyer working on behalf of the Chief of Avon and Somerset Constabulary Sarah Crew issued a settlement which said five of the terms of the warning notice were 'disproportionate'. Reacting to the settlement yesterday he said: 'This creeping culture of censorship is detrimental to all of us in society, whatever we believe, and we must challenge it wherever we see it.' He was the second of five children, four of whom were born in Straide; Mary in 1841, Anne in 1848, and Sabina in 1850. Michael’s only brother James was born in Haslingden on the 30th June 1853 and died two years later on the 12th of March 1855. His father and mother, Martin Davitt and Catherine Kielty were tenants on the John Knox estate at Straide. Upon being evicted from their home in Straide, the family was forced to go to the workhouse in Swinford. After Catherine discovered the rules of the workhouse required Michael to be separated from her, the family immediately left the workhouse and like many other evicted families at this time, decided to emigrate in search of a better life. Arriving in Liverpool by boat from Dublin, they set out on foot to Haslingden, almost 50 miles away. Haslingden was an area of England where locals from the Straide area had already found work. Davitt’s father managed to find temporary lodging for his family. However, after only two days here, they were evicted for a second time, when it was discovered that Michael had the measles. Davitt’s father then set up a tent against a wall and James Bonner, a worker from County Armagh, took the sick child and family into his house, even though he had four small children of his own. The census of March 1851 shows the Davitts as lodgers in Owen Egan’s house in Wilkinson St. At that time, there were a total of fifteen people living in the small house. Later the Davitts’ succeeded in renting at Rock Hall, where families from the west of Ireland lived. Michael’s father and mother found work as hawkers, and a year later Martin found work as a farm labourer. Martin Davitt was literate in English and wrote letters home for other families whilst also teaching them to read and write in English. Michael’s Childhood and Early Work Experiences At just nine years of age, Michael Davitt started working in a cotton mill at Ewood Bridge, on the outskirts of Haslingden. He passed himself off as being over thirteen years old and worked 60 hours a week. His pay was 2s.6d, a week. He later moved on to Whittaker and then to Stellfoxe’s Victoria Mill near Baxenden, outside Haslingden. It was here that he got his right arm caught and badly injured in a machine on 8th May 1857, resulting in amputation. After Michael Davitt recovered from his operation, John Dean a cotton manufacturer, became his benefactor and Davitt got a second chance at education in the local Wesleyan school run by George Poskett, which he attended for 4 years. The report was immediately rejected by Israel as an “obscene inversion of reality”. More than 70 percent of the recorded deaths have been women and children and Israel has failed to prove that the remaining 30 percent – adult males – were active Hamas fighters, she said. Regarding the second violated act, Albanese said Israeli forces have wounded more than 70,000 Palestinians and detained thousands of Palestinian men and boys, subjecting them to torture and mistreatment. On the third act, Albanese said Israel has destroyed or severely damaged most of Gaza’s life-sustaining infrastructure, including hospitals and agricultural land. “The incalculable collective trauma will be experienced for generations to come,” Albanese said in a statement. “Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza is an escalatory stage of a long-standing settler colonial process of erasure,” said said. Watchkeeper Drone UAV Tactical Systems’ flagship product is the Watchkeeper drone, made for the British Army and Border Force. Having racked up 100,000 hours of service in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Watchkeeper was originally modelled on Israel’s Elbit-made Hermes drones, which have been extensively deployed in operations against Gaza. By commissioning the Watchkeeper, the British government is thereby buying technology that claims to be ‘field-tested’ on Palestinians, while the Elbit CEO boasted of the ‘collaboration with the Israeli and UK governments‘ made possible through the Watchkeeper programme. UAV TACTICAL SYSTEMS ARMS ISRAEL The UAV Tactical Systems factory is directly supplying the Israeli military. Data to 2021 shows that the company holds export licenses for the sale, to Israel, of drones systems, target acquisition/surveillance systems, electronics equipment, and other military technologies. Freedom of Information disclosures show the company supplies Israel with infrared or thermal imaging equipment, and components for military grade ground vehicles. We also know that the UAV Tactical Systems site has been used for projects operating the Hermes class of drones, on behalf of both the British military and for the United Nations. This drone is notorious for its deployments against Palestinians, used for surveillance, bombings, and targetted assasinations. Having been Israel’s ‘worst kept secret‘ for years, the Israeli military recently admitted that its Hermes drones are outfitted with explosives and munitions, and it is likely that parts for these drones are what comprise the many ML10-categorised exports that UAV Tactical Systems holds for the sale to Israel. The UAV Tactical Systems site is therefore intimately tied to Israel’s drone warfare operation in two ways. On one hand, it is fuelling Israel’s drone programmes directly through the provision of hardware for Israel’s Hermes. While on the other hand, it further profits from these operations by repackaging and selling Israeli drones under the Watchkeeper brand. Elbit systems All of this fits the pattern of Elbit’s British operations: profitting two-fold from Israeli occupation and from the export opportunities from Israeli occupation technologies. Elbit Systems is Israel’s largest arms company, with their broad range of activities generating a broad influence in Israel’s militarised, securitised occupation of Palestine. Elbit supplies the Israeli military with 85% of their drones and 85% of their land-based equipment. The company’s surveillance equipment monitors Palestinians through drone operations, at border points, and across Israel’s apartheid wall. Elbit supplies the IDF with all of its small calibre munitions through subsidiary IMI Systems, while its armed remote-control boats which have attacked Palestinian fishermen. Their Hermes drones have been used for extrajudical killings in foreign countries such as Sudan and operations in Egypt, while enabling the slaughter of Palestinians inside Gaza. They were used extensively in the 2008 and 2014 assaults on Gaza, in which Israel killed 1,417 and 2,202 Palestinians respectively, including four boys killed by a Hermes attack while playing on a beach in Gaza in 2014. Elbit’s business model is then to sell these technologies on to fuel imperialism elsewhere. Its drones have not only been deployed by British military and border operations, but are employed by the EU’s militarised border agency Frontex. The same technologies outfitting Israel’s apartheid wall run along the US’ border wall with Mexico, and are used for monitoring of indigenous lands. Elbit drones have been puchased in major volumes by India, in turn deploying them in violent military campaigns perpetuating the repression of Kashmiri populations. The company formerly hosted 10 sites across Britain. As of 2023, with Elbit forced to close its Oldham factory and London headquarters, this has been reduced to 8 sites. Soon they’ll only have 7.

The British Dental Association survey found 43% of dentists said the rescue plan will result in fewer appointments, while just 3% believe it will create more. Patients and dentists staged a protest at Westminster yesterday, as Dentistry Minister Andrea Leadsom prepares to be grilled by MPs today. The BDA’s Shawn Charlwood, who will also give evidence before the Health Select Committee, said: “Check ups are hard to come by, but it will prove much harder for ministers to find a dentist who backs their outlandish claims. Empty soundbites won’t stop queues outside practices or call time on DIY dentistry.” Everyone should have access to an NHS dentist More than 12 million people were unable to access NHS dental care last year – more than 1 in 4 adults in England. At the same time 90% of dental practices are no longer accepting new NHS adult patients. Data from the House of Commons Library showed 40% of children didn't have their recommended annual check-up last year. Restore funding for dental services and recruit more NHS dentists The UK spends the smallest proportion of its heath budget on dental care of any European nation. Government spending on dental services in England was cut by a quarter in real terms between 2010 and 2020. The number of NHS dentists is down by more than 500 to 24,151 since the pandemic. Change the contracts A Parliamentary report by the Health Select Committee has branded the current NHS dentists' contracts as “not fit for purpose” and described the state of the service as "unacceptable in the 21st century". The system effectively sets quotas on the maximum number of NHS patients a dentist can see as it caps the number of procedures they can perform each year. Dentists also get paid the same for delivering three or 20 fillings, often leaving them out of pocket. The system should be changed so it enables dentists to treat on the basis of patient need. Sir Benjamin Bathurst, a wealthy slave trader, acquired the stunning estate in 1695 and it remains in the family’s hands. The park sits beside the town of Cirencester and, ever since its inception, people have been allowed through the gates for walking, playing and imbibing the scent of lime blossom from its magnificent avenue of mature trees. The parkland, landscaped in the 18th century, has been the de facto town park: children have climbed trees there, and residents with tiny back yards have enjoyed the many scientifically proven physical and mental health benefits of exercising in a very large green back yard. There are similar arrangements at other estates, such as Blenheim, where the townsfolk of Woodstock – similarly adjacent to estate walls – can wander fairly freely into vast swathes of parkland on their doorstep. This centuries-old arrangement arises because previous lords recognised a social contract: they needed the town as much as residents benefited from access. Besides, it would be provocative to keep the hoi polloi confined to their grimy little streets when there was so much green space just over the wall. Now that social contract is crumbling. The Bathurst estate is due to activate electronic gates and a ticket booth at Cirencester Park, charging pedestrians £4 for a day pass (locals can pay a £10 deposit for a “free” access card). Lord Bathurst appeals for “help” to run the park; poorer residents will struggle to prioritise paying £10 to enjoy an avenue of limes. Rarely are land rights questioned in any way in Britain, but this heartfelt outcry from one English town is similar to the Covid lockdowns when, desperately requiring local green space, many people began to question why so much land was out of bounds. Why do we only have a right to roam over 8% of England? And clear rights to swim or paddle in 3% of rivers? These questions are growing because Lord Bathurst’s charges are part of a bigger trend. Large estates are run on increasingly commercial lines. It’s cash for access. And landowners are shaking down visitors for every penny. Most of us accept that if we drive a car into a grand estate we must pay handsomely for parking (£9 for six hours at Cirencester Park). Fair enough, if we want to purchase a guided tour, a well-priced coffee, or treat our dogs to the Bathurst estate’s special dog-wash. But charges for a walker who seeks nothing more than the peaceful enjoyment of the green fields ofEngland? Local residents have called in the Right to Roam campaign, which has organised a “mass trespass” in the park this weekend, with speeches and games for children. For many, the fact that many grand estates are built on colonial plunder and slavery adds to the importance of them acknowledging their social obligations today. Labour has already U-turned on its commitment to a Scottish-style right to roam law in England. But it would be in the landed gentry’s own best interests to encourage the next government to take some steps to widen access, and for the grand old estates to restore their pragmatic approach of recent centuries – freely giving the little people a little access. Without such modest compromises, the clamour for more rights to roam will become an irresistible movement.
