I don't envy those members of the various public health agencies attempting to sell the jab or jabs to the people

RAHM EMANUEL While he may not have originally coined the turn of phrase, Rahm Emanuel is famous for saying, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.” He said this in November of 2008 while serving as Chief of Staff for President Obama. The sentence that he spoke after his original statement was, “It provides the opportunity to do things that were not possible to do before.” I’m here to suggest that he may have had it wrong. HE’S WRONG I met Rahm Emanuel in November of 2007, before then Senator Obama announced his candidacy for president. I ran into him at a dinner meeting with many members of the Illinois Democratic Party. I wasn’t a person with political leanings and had no idea who he or Senator Obama was, but we talked for about five minutes. I still think he’s wrong. NEVER LET A WAIST GO TO CRISIS I think the statement should read, “Never let a waist go to crisis. It provides the opportunity to do things that are not possible to do after.” But, I’m basing this on my own experiences. And, I have a lifetime of experience in letting my waist go to crisis.

Lately, Bill Gates has gotten lots of press coverage for his philanthropic work and his work in vaccinations and immunizations. Because I’ve decided to title my day’s writing the way I have, I’m sure many of you are already ready to read the description or jump to conclusions and hang me by the hangman’s noose. But, bear with me and watch and see if you can see my point of view. The dirty little secret, unless you live with me, is that I spend most days thinking poor thoughts about Bill Gates. It’s not a healthy attitude, but when I’m tired, I lose my filter, and I get tired of the decades-old bugs, the never-ending computer reboots, the endless hourglasses, and the lost time. I hope you ask more questions, find answers, evaluate, and ask more questions. Is this right or wrong? Fact or fiction? Ask the fact checkers because they know. I don't know. I just hope you continue to find the desire and the drive to ask questions, in a time when asking questions is forbidden and means that you wanna kill someone's grandma.

EXPERTS EVERYWHERE The year 2020 made it obvious in so many ways that we had plenty of experts in everything everywhere. You simply could not have virtual or in-person conversations with any individual or group of individuals without someone comparing their personal favorite expert’s opinion on a topic when compared to your favorite expert’s inferior, stupid opinion on the same topic. Once the conversations progressed, the conversation usually then escalated to referencing the expert’s educational pedigree along with a list of their published citations. And, usually, the final portion of the conversation, occurring before communications were discontinued for a lifetime, was the endless name-calling, the assassination of character, and other fruitful pursuits in rescuing one’s insulted dignity. WHERE DO EXPERTS COME FROM? Well, I’m no expert on the topic, but I suppose they came from their mommies and daddies. They were all raised in humble dwellings by sacrificial mommies or daddies who sacrificed everything so that they could attend all the premier schools, get the best education, and get the diploma(s) on the wall to prove that they are the brightest. Or, maybe that’s not the case. Maybe it’s like the career path of Mona Lisa, as mentioned in the movie <a href="https://youtu.be/3nGQLQF1b6I" target="_blank">My Cousin Vinny</a>, when Vinny calls her to be an expert witness in the court case. Maybe the expert learned their craft at the side of their parent or someone else that already had the skills they wanted to learn. Perhaps the expert started as an apprentice. ME I hope my random thoughts on experts have served as a catalyst for you to clarify your relationships with the various experts and help you weigh how or if they will find their way into your life. I’ve been meaning to write about procrastination, but I just keep putting it off, until I get around to it. I was going to write the content yesterday but decided it could wait until another day. It would probably be best if I waited until a hurricane impacts the shores of Tennessee, but I digress. The time has come, and I can not put it off any longer. I am old, and I’m not getting younger, and I think it’s time I tell the younger generations my thoughts on procrastination.

FUTILE I’m not a fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, or any wars for that matter, but there seems to be a substantial disagreement on the origin of the phrase “Resistance is Futile.” Apparently, the phrase was popularized by the Bork or Borg in the movie “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” I wouldn’t know, because I’ve never been awake or attentive through an entire Star Trek movie or episode. Someone apparently found a reference to the phrase in an X-Men comic written in 1976, so it seems futile to even try to figure out where the phrase came from. FERTILE I’m more interested in the idea or topic that “Resistance is Fertile.” It seems that we are actually witnessing a fertile resurgence of resistance all around us. So, in my mind, “Resistance is Fertile” in so many areas of life. FUTILE OR FERTILE I’m not here to draw conclusions, only to provoke thought. But, I think we have to consider our attitudes and opportunities about the topics I mentioned and decide if we want to make the investment in learning more about them. We live in such a connected world where information is available on all of these topics. For instance, I really enjoy getting information from Facebook groups like “Reversing Insulin Resistance” (https://www.facebook.com/groups/reversinginsulinresistance/) and “Lower Insulin” (https://www.facebook.com/groups/198981013851366/) where you will find enthusiasts that will discuss the finer points on the specific topics. And, there are Facebook groups and groups on other social media platforms for similar topics. I encourage you to go explore, learn, and resist. It may be futile or fertile. ME Is resistance futile? Is resistance fertile? I think for me, it is both. But, I continue to resist every day, in every way, so that I can continue to learn and grow. For you, you have to decide. THEY ARE ALL OUT TO GET ME I’m only paranoid because they are all out to get me. And I’ve never understood why I can’t just restore my data from all the backups the government agencies keep of my data. I’m only kidding, of course. I’ve just lost too many important things in my life to risk losing more. I always wondered what happened to that set of twins, but I digress. So, I keep backups and probably always will. The extra drives, cables, bicycles, cars, vitamins, and pints of ice cream will probably drive my wife crazy until the day I die, but I will have a backup. (Fortunately for her, it’s my only flaw.) And likely, the backup will be some form of locally sourced, grass raised, free-range, pastured form of backup data. And, now you know. WHAT IS A NEWSLETTER? Since long before fossils roamed the prairies, back when I was a kid, people, families, and organizations have produced newsletters. A newsletter used to be either a written, typeset, or typewritten letter containing the latest news about these people and organizations. As time progressed, people would include things like drawings, photos, and art to improve the message and make it more attractive. Of course, now, we have sophisticated newsletters that include content like video and audio to spruce them up and make them more personal. HISTORY OF NEWSLETTERS There seems to be some general disagreement when it comes to this topic, but we know for sure that there were newsletters in the 1600s and 1700s. By the mid-1700s, they were becoming more common, and then larger versions for organizations like towns, cities, and political groups evolved into the newspapers of the days of my youth. In the present day, we usually receive family newsletters during the holiday period in December but will receive them monthly from some families that serve as missionaries. AWARE I am aware that I am totally unaware of many things … I'm clueless … I have a tendency to focus on specific things, and, because of that, I am unaware of what is happening around me. But, I am aware that I am unaware. UNAWARE I must say that, while I am unaware, I am not necessarily unhappy. I tend to enjoy my time of focus, but it is somewhat disconcerting to know that the building I'm in could be on fire and I may not notice. So, I've decided I need to become more aware of that which I am not aware. CALENDARS One thing that I wasn't aware of was that they actually have awareness calendars. This new information actually left me in “a days.” In any case, I located an awareness calendar at https://nationaltoday.com/awareness-holidays/, which contains a list of awareness days, awareness weeks, and awareness months. I'm going to highlight some of these. JANUARY 2021 January 2021 is almost gone, but it was home for these awareness holidays: National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, Paget's Awareness Day, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, World Braille Day, World Leprosy Day, World Leprosy Week, Cervical Health Awareness Month, Glaucoma Awareness Month, National Birth Defects Prevention Month, National Blood Donor Month, and Thyroid Awareness Month. Even as unaware as I am, I knew about the problems with human trafficking and have been aware of the Holocaust. But, Paget's was new for me. FEBRUARY 2021 While there are probably more awareness events for February, I did discover that February has Give Kids A Smile Day, Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Day, National Condom Day, National Donor Day, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Week, National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, National Children's Dental Health Month, Low Vision Awareness Month and American Heart Month. I was unaware of these last two awareness campaigns even though I am aware that I've had poor vision most of my life. And, my recent recovery from heart failure episodes have made me become more aware of heart health. MARCH 2021 March marches in and brings us International Women's Day, National Panda Day, Great British Spring Clean Day, International Day of Forests, World Down Syndrome Day, Kick Butts Day, World Water Day, American Diabetes Alert Day, World TB Day, Poison Prevention Week, National Aplastic Anemia and MDS Awareness Week, National Sleep Awareness Week, Endometriosis Awareness Week, National Caffeine Awareness Month, National Kidney Month, National Social Work Month, Brain Injury Awareness Month, Hemophilia Awareness Month, March To Health Month, National MS Education and Awareness Month, National Nutrition Month, Red Cross Month, and Poison Prevention Awareness Month. I was unaware that poison was such a problem, needing both a week and a month, and I feel that we probably need a National Caffeine Awareness Year. APRIL 2021 April is one of my favorite months as I am aware that it is my little Pudykin's birthday which makes it especially special. It is also World Autism Awareness Day, World Health Day, National Public Health Week, National Infant Immunization Week, Distracted Driving Awareness Month, National Internship Awareness Month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Stress Awareness Month, Cesarean Awareness Month, IBS Awareness Month, National Autism Awareness Month, Primary Immunodeficiency Awareness Month, and Sarcoidosis Awareness Month. MAY 2021 I am aware that May is the month of my wedding anniversary, so I will tend to be less obnoxious during this month. No guarantees though. There aren't many awareness days in May, but World Fair Trade Day is on the calendar. Somehow, I think it might apply to my wedding anniversary in some way, but I suppose I probably got the better deal. It does seem that many associations want us to be aware of things all month, as I could find all of these awareness months: ALS Awareness Month, Arthritis Awareness Month, Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, Better Hearing and Speech Month, Better Sleep Month, Celiac Awareness Month, Clean Air Month, Correct Posture Month, Cystic Fibrosis Month, Hepatitis Awareness Month, Huntington's Disease Awareness Month, Lyme Disease Awareness Month, National Cancer Research Month, National High Blood Pressure Education Month, National Lupus Awareness Month, National Melanoma Skin Cancer Awareness Month, National Mental Health Month, National Neurofibromatosis Month, National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month, and National Stroke Awareness Month. JULY 2021 We must be too busy to be aware during the month of July, and that’s just the naked facts. AUGUST 2021 August is a busy month for most, as many of the “littler” peoples are returning to school. “The slap” is the process a company or person goes through to get rid of a relationship that was desirable at some point but is no longer desirable. In many cases, as many companies grow in size, they tend to develop relationships with newer, bigger clients. They then feel it is in their best interests to abandon their original customers because, relative to the new customers, the older customers don’t provide the same benefits. So, the company will take actions to “slap” or get rid of the older, original customers. Some individuals also use “the slap” in their marital relationships. As time passes, they feel that there is no point in maintaining the relationship, and they take actions that “slap” or drive away their partners.

Once you have a sense of what things are both actionable and advantageous, you need to eliminate the other things as distractions during the day and focus on the “actionabler” and “advantageouser” items for the day. You want to eliminate and focus.

Someone passed along the advice “Don’t cross the streams,” and that got me wondering about the origins of the phrase. After a bit of online investigation, it turns out to be a phrase from the 1984 film “Ghostbusters.” Dr. Spangler then informed the audience that “It would be bad,” and we’ve been concerned with crossing the streams ever since. But, I’m not sure that this is the actual origin of the phrase. This then got me wondering if I had ever crossed streams during my life, and that brought a fantastic walk down Memory Lane.

How does someone become the boss of me? Where do they get that authority?

We have migrated from a society that built great things because we would divide and conquer. We have recently migrated to a society of individuals and institutions that divides and cancels. Only time will tell if this makes things better or worse. In any case, it’s something to consider in your own personal life as you move forward. Are you dividing and conquering or dividing and cancelling, and how will it benefit you and those you love?

ARE YOU SLOW? As we age, we tend to slow down or think that we are slow. But do you feel that you’re slow? Is time passing more quickly, or are you slowing down some? And, are you “got passed by a guy pushing a wheelbarrow” slow? I found out I was. APRIL 16, 2015 April 16, 2015, started off like any other day for me. Well, not really, but it was another in a long series of great days. The ship that we were sailing on pulled into the Port of Roatan on the Island of Roatan just off the coast of Honduras. I was excited because I was planning on riding my bicycle around the island. I had learned that I could take my bicycle when cruising and had done it for some time. And, the day was sunny, and winds were light. CYCLEMETER I have an app for my Iphone named Cyclemeter that I use to track all of the details for my bicycle rides, and it serves as evidence for the tale that I’m about to tell you. The link http://cyclemeter.com/6a08acd34d9daf7a/Cycle-20150416-0822-29817 will provide you with all the details for my ride that day. It records things like my heart rate, distance, time I’ve ridden, the speed of travel, etc. Think of the app as a “black box” that records all of the details for an airplane flight, only this works on my phone on my bicycle. GREAT BEGINNINGS When riding a bicycle, it’s always important to start the ride with a nice slow pace to warm up, and this island provides the perfect opportunity for that type of riding. After clearing the ride with the Honduran authorities and ignoring the “He’s gonna ride that thing in these hills!” stares, I set out on my bicycle, riding to the left out of the port and heading down to the town of Flowers Bay. THE GOING GETS TOUGH After passing through the town of Flowers Bay, you have to turn right and head over the hill if you want to go to West End, as I did. And, at the two and a half-mile mark of the ride, the going started to get tough. But, that’s when the tough get going. And, I’m rough and tough and hard to bluff. But I am slow. It’s not necessarily that you have to climb a long way as the climb only measures about two hundred feet, but it’s the steepness and grade of the ride. And, I was pushing my 350-“poundish” body on a bicycle up that steep grade. And that’s when it happened. WHEELBARROW DUDE At around the three-mile mark, a dude pushing a wheelbarrow with some bricks, two buckets, and some concrete mix passed me going uphill while I was pedaling like a madman (story embellished a little to protect my fragile ego). I’m fortunate that the camera on the bicycle recorded my moment of doom for posterity so that you can all chuckle a little. The dude was friendly and muttered “rapido, rapido, rapido,” which translates into something like “move over, and let the faster people pass” or something like that. After feeling a moment of embarrassment, I eventually caught up with him when he went to turn off the road, and we chatted in Spanish for a moment or two after I could breathe and talk again. He was a really nice chap, and while our paths have not crossed again, we remain friends to this day. THE HUMILIATION At that point, I had to decide if I should turn around and go back to the ship or continue to see what was on the other side of the hill. As a big dude, decisions like this come about on a frequent basis. But I decided to press on, and I’m so glad I did. HEAD WEST, YOUNG MAN I was rewarded with a bay that was as smooth as glass in the little cove town of West End, which is not on the east end of the island. I meandered around the town on my trusty iron steed and took many photos of the town, the people, and the bay. THE LONG WAY BACK While I could have taken the short path back to the ship in the back of a taxi, I decided that I should take the long way back to the ship. And, I was rewarded with many more beautiful photos of the island. I passed by Gibson Bight, Antoney’s Cay, and Sandy Ba, and turned back up the hill after I passed the town of Sundancer. NEVER TURN BACK I guess the point of my story is don’t stop, turn around, or quit even if you are a little slower. Never turn back unless you absolutely have to.
