The Salt Lake City Police Department has released body-worn camera footage from an officer-involved critical incident that happened in mid-August.
Officers caught the suspect fleeing from a robbery attempt near 356 West 700 South on August 14.
According to police, the suspect resisted detainment efforts by two of the responding officers. Those officers sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Police said that the suspect lost consciousness after being detained. Following this, officers performed chest compressions and administered naloxone (which rapidly reverses an opioid overdose.)
Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown praised the officers involved, and said his department will use this situation as a teaching tool for other officers.
“Our police officers come to work every day to protect our community. In the face of great stress, danger, and uncertainty, they are trained to remain professional and show strength and resiliency” said Police Chief Mike Brown.
“We are committed to carefully reviewing the investigative findings in this case. As a forward-thinking department, we will use those findings to evaluate our policies, training, and procedures to continue ensuring we are making our city safer.”
The body-worn camera footage shows the suspect being noncompliant with the officers. The suspect is then seen reaching for the gun holster of one of the officers. Once detained, the officers encouraged the suspect to calm down and began preparing a safety restraint device. Officers began performing medical aid just a minute later.
The suspect was then transported to the hospital. The Police Department was informed of his death less than an hour later.

Pleasant Prairie officer won't face charges when Jacob Albright killed himself in the back of the police vehicle
[Note to YouTube uploaders, this video may have a "Community Guideline" violation and which may result in a channel strike, post at your own discretion]
The Pleasant Prairie Police Department released body camera and squad camera video Wednesday from the day a man in handcuffs ended his life in the back seat of a Pleasant Prairie squad car.
Three Pleasant Prairie police officers arrested and were transporting 36-year-old Jacob Albright to the Kenosha County Jail on July 20, when he managed to shoot himself in the head.
WISN 12 News is not showing the moment Albright pulled the trigger of the gun.
Squad camera video shows Albright had a gun in the back seat of the squad car after officers initially searched him.
"I'm going to detain you," Officer Brandon Matz said to Albright in the body camera video from July 20.
Matz arrested Albright at the Super 8 hotel in Pleasant Prairie. Pleasant Prairie Police officers said someone saw Albright with a gun.
As a felon, he could not legally have one.
Video shows Matz escorting Albright outside in handcuffs. After a brief struggle near the squad car, officers search Albright and then put him in the squad car.
"Anything in your pockets?" one officer asks Albright.
"No. Just my knife," Albright said.
He is still in handcuffs, but officers in the video see him appear to reach for something.
"If you've got something in your pants, we need to know about it," Matz said to Albright. Matz asked again, "Do you have drugs on you? Or do you have a gun in-between your butt cheeks?"
Albright said he did not.
According to the video, officers ultimately decide they will search Albright again, but only after they drive him to jail intake at the Kenosha County Jail - a roughly eight-mile drive.
Video in the back seat of the squad shows Albright shifting around and saying the handcuffs hurt his wrist.
"Ow (expletive), the cuffs are making me numb, dude," Albright says.
At one point, Albright unbuckles his seat belt. Periodically, he lays down horizontally on the seat.
Later, the gun appears in the video. According to PPPD, Albright pulled it from inside his shorts.
As the squad car pulls up to the Kenosha County Jail, Albright gets his finger on the trigger and fires one shot into his head.
Albright died at the scene.
Albright's family says they are devastated and still left with questions.
"He was able to change positions two or three times with the gun out and visible. Had the officers just glanced back," said Albright's niece, Kailah Bergstrom.
Bergstrom and her family said with the release of the police video, they will continue to fight to get justice for Albright.
"I just want it not to happen to another person. And I just want some humility," Bergstrom said. "And I just want Jake to know that he was worth the fight, because clearly, he didn't think he was anymore."
Albright's sister, Shawna Little, said in a statement to WISN 12 News:
"We are still left without real answers. Why was Jake arrested for a weapons charge without locating said weapon? After failing to locate a weapon, why did the officers allow Jake to fidget around in the backseat without checking what he was doing?"
On October 30, Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley told Pleasant Prairie Police Chief David Smetana there would be no criminal charges against the two officers in the squad car with Albright, and another officer involved in his arrest.

Seattle police releases video of deadly shooting of suspected child predator at Tukwila hotel
Seattle police released new bodycam video Friday evening that shows the moments leading up toofficers fatally shooting a suspected child predator at a Tukwila hotel earlier this week.
Seattle Police Department (SPD) Chief Adrian Diaz said the 67-year-old child predator suspect arrived at the DoubleTree Suites hotel around 3:13 p.m. on Wednesday under the impression that he was meeting two young girls, ages 7 and 11.
However, unbeknownst to the suspect, multiple SPD officers with the Washington State Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce were undercover and waiting to arrest the man.
The task force at the SPD investigates Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) cases. These cases may include the production, distribution or possession of materials used to sexually exploit children or service provider systems used in committing such crimes.
The newly released video shows the officers opening the door for the man, who immediately flashed a gun. A scuffle then occurred before police ultimately fatally shot the man. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Officials at the scene said a Seattle officer was grazed by a bullet in their leg during the shootout with the man.
Diaz continued to note that internet crimes against children are up 67% from 2022 to 2023.
"For our officers, these situations are dangerous, unpredictable, and can escalate rapidly," Diaz said.
“I was running, I could see someone firing a gun,” said Eric Wehrmeister, who was staying at the hotel several doors down. “There was a rapid succession of gunfire. Good thing they were shooting away from my room. You know it could’ve been a lot worse.”
Wehrmeister told KOMO News he had just checked out before the shooting on the fifth floor of the hotel, which happened several rooms down from where he had stayed.

Bodycam footage shows fatal stand-off during hostage situation at Florida bank
Bodycam footage shows the negotiation efforts between Florida authorities and a suspect during a hostage situation at a Bank of America on Tuesday.
“You are about to view the body-worn camera footage from within the Bank of America robbery and hostage incident that occurred yesterday,” the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies and the Federal Bureau of Investigations were dispatched around 11 a.m. to a bank robbery at the Bank of America in the area of Bell Tower Shops in Fort Myers. Upon arrival, LCSO said dozens of people fled from the bank as they secured the area.
According to Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno, law enforcement officers immediately began negotiating with the man who took two hostages and threatened them with a knife while saying he had a bomb.
LCSO said the moment the suspect threatened the hostage’s life, a SWAT sniper shot and killed him. Both hostages were not harmed during the incident.
On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office released bodycam footage that showed officials talking to the suspect, who has not yet been identified.
While the video only shows the authorities talking to the man from outside of the bank, Sheriff Marceno said the footage “depicts only a small portion of the hostage negotiation efforts that took place.”
According to the sheriff, the suspect was placing hostages in “imminent danger” by threatening them with a knife while placing them in a chokehold during the portion of the footage.
“Keep talking to me, keep talking to me,” the officer said. “You let me know what’s going through your head right now. What concerns do you have? I wanna make sure you’re the most relaxed.”
After the officer stops talking, a pop can be heard.
“In an effort to preserve the lives of the hostages and general public, the decision was made to neutralize the threat. Our Special Operations Unit and Hostage Negotiations Team train regularly together so that all options are available when situations like this arise,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

Fond du Lac police justified in the fatal shooting of Lawrence Drennan after a high speed chase
No charges will be filed against a North Fond du Lac police officer for shooting and killing a suspect who had threatened to kill officers and would not show his hands, Winnebago County District Attorney Eric Sparr ruled.
Sgt. Bryce LaLuzerne stopped Lawrence Drennan during a traffic stop on Feb. 2, but Drennan drove off. LaLuzerne's body cam shows he pulled him for not having his tail lights on. During the stop, the officer suspected Drennan was intoxicated. He asked Drennan to get out of the vehicle, but Drennan drove off.
The pursuit made its way to Interstate 41. During the chase, Drennan called 911 and made comments including “if they stop me, I will shoot them all to death”, and “get ready to fire to kill, because I’m going to fire to kill.” Those comments were related to LaLuzerne.
After a tire deflation device was used, Drennan’s vehicle stopped. Drennan did not follow LaLuzerne’s commands, and kept his right hand hidden behind his back. Drennan also repeated the comments that officers would need to shoot him. As Drennan moved towards the officer, LaLuzerne fired twice, striking Drennan once.
Winnebago Co. District Attorney Eric Sparr's opinion on a Feb. 2 officer involved shooting.
Autopsy results showed Drennan had a BAC of .198, more than twice the legal driving limit, according to Sparr’s report.

Charleston County Sheriff’s Office releases dash cam video from deadly deputy-involved shooting
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) on Friday released dashcam footage from a deadly May 7 deputy-involved shooting.
The incident happened in Ravenel shortly before 4:00 p.m. when Deputies Evan Cubbage and Alexander Hodge conducted a traffic stop on a black Crown Victoria.
Charleston County deputy injured, suspect dead in traffic stop shooting
Deputy Cubbage approaches the passenger-side window and has a pleasant conversation with the driver and passenger for just under seven minutes before asking the passenger to step out of the car.
Deputy Cubbage appears to grab the passenger’s hands and tells him not to reach for anything as he is getting out to of the car.
Deputy Hodge approaches and Deputy Cubbage screams, “he’s got a gun!”
The suspect jumps out and opens fire as the deputies run to the driver’s side of the car.
Deputy Cubbage returns fire over the car, then runs around to the passenger’s side and continues firing. Deputy Hodge runs off-screen and fires as well. The suspect, identified as James Pierce (28) of Walterboro, was hit and died at the scene.
Deputy Cubbage was also shot three times. He can be heard screaming, “I’m hit!” Deputy Hodge asks Deputy Cubbage where he is hit, and Deputy Cubbage describes his injuries. He also says that he needs help with the suspect, who is dead.

Ada County deputies justified in the fatal shooting of Jared Decker, after stabbing a deputy
Valley County Prosecutor Brian Naugle has found three Ada County Sheriff's Office deputies were justified in the shooting of Jared Decker on April 10, 2023.
“Decker’s actions presented a real and immediate risk of death or serious injuries to the deputies he encountered, particularly the deputy Decker stabbed multiple times,” Naugle said in a letter issued last week. “The use of force by the deputies in this case was justifiable.”
The shooting happened after Decker pulled a knife and stabbed Deputy Todd Nelson on Interstate 84 near Eisenman Road.
Nelson and three other deputies, Ryan Carlson, Anthony Del Toro and Dustin Lauritzon, responded to a report of a man walking down the freeway. When confronted by deputies, Decker was combative and stabbed Nelson. Decker was shot by deputies and later died.
“This is not a close case,” Naugle said. “The deputies gave mister Decker ample time to comply, offered him help, and made every reasonable effort to resolve the situation peacefully.”
Naugle's review, and an internal investigation by the Critical Incident Task Force (CITF), found all four deputies did not violate any policies.
CITF reviews also found the deputies use of lethal force was necessary.
Deputy Nelson is still recovering from his injuries.

Body camera video shows Florida woman jump in deputy's car before chase, deadly crash
Three people are dead, and another is hospitalized after the Marion County Sheriff’s Office says a woman stole a patrol car, led deputies on a high-speed chase, and then caused a crash.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were initially called to Forest Plaza off Highway 40 in Silver Springs for a report of a suspicious incident. Someone told dispatchers that a woman was trying to steal an elderly lady’s car. A woman working at a China King in that plaza says she also witnessed the woman trying to break into other cars too.
A deputy drove out there to try to help, but things went awry almost immediately. Body camera video shows the moment the sheriff’s office says 33-year-old Kendra Boone climbed in through the passenger side of the deputy’s patrol car.
"No!" the deputy shouts when he realizes what happened.
In seconds, the woman the sheriff’s office has identified as Boone is in the driver’s seat, "pedal to the metal" with another deputy after her. Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods says the theft could have happened to anyone.
"You saw how fast that happened. Even in my 34 years of experience, that would have happened to me," said Sheriff Woods.
Boone fled down Highway 40, with the sound of speeding cars and sirens drawing people out from shops along the way. Katelyn Rentz was one of them. She works at Big Pines Hardware, across the street from the plaza where the deputy’s car was stolen.
"It was, like, insane," said Rentz. "I have never seen that."
A man at an AutoZone near where the incident happened told FOX 35 he saw the whole thing and couldn’t believe his eyes. Rentz says she was in the same boat.
"It was a scary experience because you just don’t know what’s going on at that point," said Rentz. "People are crazy, man. That was my first thought. People are insane."
The sheriff’s office says she flew down the road at over 100 miles an hour, eventually slamming into a pickup, killing two of the three people inside and herself. The third person who was in that truck is still in the hospital.
Sheriff Billy Woods says Boone has faced charges all over the state and believes she should still have been in prison on Thursday when all this happened.
Asked whether the sheriff saw any issue with the deputy leaving his car running when he stepped out, the sheriff got heated.
"That means s***," the sheriff responded. "That doesn't play a factor in anything. This moron stole a police vehicle and killed two human beings. What my policies are and what the procedures are mean nothing. We did nothing wrong. My deputy did nothing wrong."

A wanted man in Tulsa is shot in the head after he pointed a gun at officers during a standoff
The Tulsa Police Department (TPD) have confirmed an officer-involved shooting near East Pine Street and North 129th East Avenue.
Police say that they were serving an arrest warrant of a 22-year-old man that was accused of trying to set his home and family on fire.
When officers arrived at the man's home, he came out with a revolver and then officers shot him, according to TPD.
FOX23 spoke with Tulsa Police captain Richard Meulenberg.
"When we arrived at the location, he came out of his home with a revolver and his actions caused officers to open fire on the suspect, Meulenberg said.
Police said the suspect, Brenden L. Lantz, who was shot in the head with non-fatal injuries.
"So here we’re coming out here to arrest someone who’s known dangerous individual here’s someone who’s put his own family in harms way in the past so we already know that’s dangerous so we’re going to take as much caution and care as possible," Meulenberg said. "When someone comes out with a weapon they escalate that so we’re on high alert and his actions are going to endanger himself and everybody out here so officers were forced to take action based on the suspects action."
Lantz was taken to the hospital for treatment and was later booked into the Tulsa County Jail.
According to court documents, Lantz pleaded guilty to first degree arson, endangering human life, and assault and battery on a police officer in September.
The arson and endangering human life was from a case in September 2022, and the assault and battery on a police officer is from July of this year. Lantz took a plea deal on all three at the same time.
Lantz was given a suspended sentence and was told to complete the Arise program, a drug rehabilitation program, as part of his plea deal, according to court documents.
Court documents say he didn't show up to his first review which was set for last Thursday, and therefore a "bench warrant" was issued for his arrest, which is what led police to his home today.
"We came out here to arrest him for his warrants," Meulenberg said.
After being released from the hospital, Lantz was booked on his previous cases and for having a gun while under the supervision of the Department of Corrections and obstruction.
"At this time I don’t have information that says he actually discharged his weapon, but the way in which he presented it his actions today caused the officers to defend themselves," Meulenberg said.
He said the officers were all in uniform, all wearing vests, clearly marked as police officers and the incident happened in the middle of the day, so he isn't sure what Lantz's mindset was.
"Only one officer fired, and I believe it was only one round," Meulenberg said.
Family told FOX23 Kristan Smittle, niece of the homeowner and girlfriend of Lantz, was arrested and booked for harboring a fugitive.

Bodycam shows Surprise police fatally shooting man holding a shotgun in domestic dispute call
Newly released body camera footage shows the moments leading up to when Surprise police fatally shot a man during a domestic dispute call in Surprise last month.
The incident occurred after officers arrived at a residence near Dysart and Waddell roads around 3 a.m. on March 10, the Surprise Police Department said in a critical incident briefing video released Friday.
They were responding to a call from a minor reporting a domestic verbal argument.
“My parents are, uh, keep on arguing, and they’re like, keeping me up all night, and it’s just being annoying,” the caller said.
After the dispatcher asked if there were any weapons inside the house, the caller replied, “Uh, no, I don’t think so. I think they’re just, like, verbally arguing, but like sometimes they do this and … it just gets out of control.”
When two officers arrived, they could hear screaming inside the residence.
As the officers approached the front door, a woman exited and said, “He’s trying to hit me.”
One officer stayed with the woman, while the other entered into the home.
As the officer opened the door, 44-year-old Trinidad Ledesma could be seen walking from the living room to the kitchen area, out of the camera view.
“As the officer turned the corner, he encountered Ledesma facing him with a black shotgun in his right hand,” Sgt. Richard Hernandez said in the briefing video.
Ledesma could be heard in the video saying, “Don’t come in. Don’t come near, boss.”
According to Hernandez, Ledesma began to bring his shotgun up, in the officer’s direction, prompting the officer to fire his weapon at least seven times. Ledesma was pronounced dead at the scene.

Colorado State Patrol releases body cam footage showing fatal crash after CSP cruiser stolen
Colorado State Patrol has recently released body camera footage of a fatal crash involving 31-year-old Anthony Alphonso Sanchez III.
As we have previously reported, Sanchez was a suspect in custody that "stole and fatally crashed a Colorado State Patrol vehicle after fleeing from Otero County Sheriff's Deputies" last Tuesday, June 20th.
While fleeing along Highway 50, the suspect reportedly caused and attempted to cause multiple crashes with his and other vehicles.
CSP Troopers deployed stop sticks that caused Sanchez to lose control and crash into the side of a semi-truck that was parked along the side of the highway. The stolen CSP vehicle then caught on fire.
Law enforcement removed Sanchez from the vehicle and transported him to an area hospital.
Sanchez later died due to injuries he received during the crash. The truck driver was uninjured.
Agents with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation are actively investigating the incident through interviews and a comprehensive review of material evidence.
Colorado State Patrol tells News5 the trooper who had their vehicle stolen was put on administrative leave but has been since cleared for return to duty. An investigation into if disciplinary action will be taken against the trooper is still ongoing.

Police body cam footage shows shootout with Bnei Brak terrorist
Police on Wednesday released body camera footage of the shootout between officers and the Palestinian terrorist who carried out a deadly terror attack in the city of Bnei Brak the previous day.
The footage shows two officers speeding down city streets at night on a police motorcycle, pistol in hand, toward the scene of the attack as a dispatcher gives them the location.
The terrorist, identified later as Diaa Hamarsheh, 27, from the West Bank village of Yabad, near Jenin, is heard shooting as the officers slow the vehicle and turn off the street.
The officer on the back of the motorcycle, who was wearing the camera, addresses his partner, Amir Khoury, saying “Khoury, watch out!” Moments later, a gunshot rings out. The officer wearing the camera falls to the pavement, stands back up, and begins firing at the terrorist from behind a tree.
He fires over a dozen shots down the residential street as sirens wail in the distance. The terrorist is then seen crumpled on the ground.
The officer takes away the terrorist’s rifle, and shouts out, “Quiet, quiet. He’s dead.”
“He’s down, he’s down, search the area,” the officer is heard saying a few seconds later, as another officer walks by.
Khoury, who was seriously injured in the encounter, later succumbed to his wounds, becoming the fifth and final victim of the deadly attack.
Seconds before the exchange with police, the terrorist shot dead his fourth victim, Avishai Yehezkel, 29, who was protecting his baby from gunfire.
The other victims include Bnei Bral resident Ya’akov Shalom, 36, and Ukrainian nationals Victor Sorokopot, 38, and Dimitri Mitrik, 23.
Hamarsheh’s terrorist past came to light on Wednesday as authorities scrambled to respond to the wave of terror attacks. Tuesday’s attack was the single deadliest terror attack in Israel since the 2014 Har Nof synagogue massacre and the third terror attack in the past week, resulting in 11 Israelis killed — the largest weekly toll since 2006 at the tail end of the Second Intifada.
Hamarsheh had sought to plot a suicide attack against Israelis as early as 2011, when he was 16 years old, according to Israeli military court filings. Hamarsheh was not convicted for that offense, instead, signing a plea bargain that saw him plead guilty to lighter charges and serving 30 months in prison.
Defense Minister Benny Gantz ordered 1,000 soldiers to bolster police forces on Wednesday, and Public Security Minister Omer Barlev called for volunteers to join civilian patrols.
Gantz also approved the administrative detention of two East Jerusalem men over their alleged ties to the Hamas terror group.
Gantz’s office said the orders were issued due to information about planned violent activities that the suspects intended to advance, and the threat they posed to national security. The orders were in the works for at least two weeks.
Earlier, the Israel Police ordered officers onto heightened alert and the army said it would beef up troop presence along the West Bank’s border with Israel. Several local authorities have announced they would shut down construction sites in order to keep Palestinian laborers away.
Police also said they were cracking down on illegal entries into the country from the West Bank and reinforcing forces positioned on main roads in the area.
Barlev, whose office oversees police, has vowed that Israel would not be deterred in its fight against terror.
“It’s a difficult night for Israel. Our hearts break for the families of those murdered and injured in this terrible attack. We will continue to battle with all our might until the terror is subdued,” he said at the scene of Tuesday’s attack.

The Decatur Police Department released body cam and dash cam footage from an officer-involved shooting from October 12 that left two officers injured and a suspect dead.
Two officers were shot and a suspect was killed after a traffic stop turned violent.
A press conference was held Monday at 11 a.m. WAND News was there to bring you the latest information.
Multiple angles from several different body cams and patrol dash cams were released.
>>Decatur police officers wounded in shooting both released from hospital
The suspect was identified as Jamontey O. Neal, 32, of Decatur, who was pronounced dead at Decatur Memorial Hospital at 12:48 a.m. Wednesday.
Around 12:30 am, officers made a traffic stop in the 1300 block of E. Walnut Street. During the stop, shots were fired. DPD said an informant had told them he was in possession of a gun.
They said Neal had two guns in the car with him. One was underneath of him. Decatur police said that is the one he reached for before opening fire on the officers.
Police said the driver, Neal, was ordered to show his hands. The videos that were released showed the officers repeatedly ordered Neal to show his hands and place his hands on the steering wheel. They said Neal refused to comply, and one officer saw what was believed to be a handgun in the vehicle near Neal.
At this point, DPD said the officers tried to remove Neal from the vehicle.
That's when they said Neal produced a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the officers at close range. At this point, the officers returned fire, DPD said.
Neal then again fired at the officers, police said, at which time the officers again returned fire.
During the shootout, one Decatur Police Officer was hit multiple times and a second Decatur Police Officer was hit one time. Neal was struck multiple times.
Decatur Police Chief Shane Brandel said, "Sergeant Wittmer was in the worst possible situation in this incident. He had been hit multiple times by gunfire. He went down to the ground. His vision was impaired. He had a malfunction of his weapon and he was completely exposed to the person who was trying to kill him."
Decatur Police said Neal's family were viewing the footage of the shooting with Illinois State Police and the Macon County State's Attorney.
"I've said this from the beginning, I want the public to see this... there is no hiding anything here. The videos speak for themselves," Chief Brandel said.

A man who attempted to carjack several vehicles was shot, killed after he pulled a gun on officers
This incident began in the area of 27th Avenue and Van Buren Street around 10:45 p.m. when patrol officers saw a brown vehicle leave the parking lot of a business at a high rate of speed.
Officers were unable to catch up to the vehicle, so they relayed the information to other officers in the area. Another officer spotted the vehicle around 34th Avenue and Van Buren Street and attempted to pull it over.
When the vehicle did not stop, the police helicopter took over and followed the car as patrol units backed off.
The vehicle continued until it reached the area of 43rd Avenue and Granada Road. The driver got out of the vehicle and ran up to a car with a gun in his hand. The driver of that car reacted and drove away.
The suspect got back in his car and drove to 60th Lane and McDowell Road. That is where he got out of his car still armed and ran up to another car yelling at that driver. The driver of that car drove away.
The suspect then ran towards a red car stopped in the roadway. At this point, officers were driving into the area and saw the man approach the car. The driver of that car said the man slammed both hands on the hood of her car holding a gun and demanded she give him her car. He then tried to open her door.
One officer arrived, and a second officer showed up as his back-up. Both officers reported seeing the suspect point his gun at one of the officers.
That is when the suspect and one officer exchanged gunfire. The suspect was hit and fell to the ground. The officer was not hurt.
After the shooting, officers moved up and provided medical aid to the man until fire personnel arrived. The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
A gun was recovered near where the suspect was shot. Evidence was found that showed the suspect fired his handgun during the shooting. No officers or community members were injured.
The car the suspect was driving had been reported stolen.

No criminal charges for Denver officer killing an armed suspect that was holding a driver hostage
Three Denver Police officers who shot and killed an armed suspect in Broomfield last year have been cleared of criminal charges, the 17th District Attorney’s Office said.
Denver's detectives James Waidler, Jay Lopez and Cole Connors all fired shots at Anthony Lainez during an armed carjacking and hostage situation on Sept. 29, 2022, the DA’s decision letter said.
“Given the totality of the circumstances and evidence, the prosecution cannot prove that the involved officers were not justified in using deadly physical force,” the letter said.
The Denver Police Department Fugitive Unit detectives were looking for Lainez, who police said was connected to a homicide, and tracked him to a residence in Broomfield.
The DA’s office said detectives watched Lainez leave the home with a woman and drive off in a white Ford Edge with temporary New Mexico tags. Broomfield Police Department officers, who had been called in for backup and tried to stop Lainez, but he drove around them and took off.
Lainez was driving recklessly according to the DA’s letter, and when he went to turn left onto East Midway Boulevard he lost control and crashed into another car in the intersection. Both Lainez and the woman got out of the Edge and ran to a Toyota Corolla that had stopped after the crash.
Lainez got in the front passenger’s seat and the woman hopped in the back passenger’s side, the letter said. Lainez allegedly held a gun to the driver’s ribs and told him to “go” but the driver pulled the keys out of the ignition and tried to escape.
According to the DA’s office, Lainez grabbed the driver and pulled him back into the car. Undercover Denver detectives in police tactical gear showed up, and Waidler yelled for Lainez to show his hands.
“Mr. Lainez appeared to hold the victim as a shield between himself and Detective Waidler as he pulled the victim back inside the Corolla,” the DA’s decision letter said.
Detective Lopez drove his truck near the Corolla to distract Lainez, got out, and “ran up to the front quarter panel of the Corolla to break the windshield with the muzzle of his rifle,” the letter said.
Lainez pulled out a gun and shot Lopez in the neck, according to the DA’s office. Lopez shot at Lainez while dropping to the ground. During that shootout, Waidler “pulled the carjacking victim by the arm and returned fire at Mr. Lainez, seated in the driver’s seat. The carjacking victim fell to the ground,” the letter said.
Lainez got out of the car with a gun in his hands, the DA’s document said, and moved toward Waidler, who was on the ground. Waidler fired several shots that struck Lainez and caused him to drop to the ground.
Detective Connors was the third officer on scene and as he was putting his tactical gear on, he heard gunshots but did not know who was firing them, the DA’s letter said. He then saw Lainez on the ground reaching for his gun and yelled at him, “Don’t grab the gun!”
“Mr. Lainez ignored the command and reached for the handgun, causing Detective Connors to fear for the safety of everyone in the immediate area. Detective Connors fired his handgun at Mr. Lainez until he stopped moving and was no longer a threat to anyone,” the letter said.
Lainez died at the scene. Lopez survived and spent nearly a month and a half in the hospital.
Lainez tested positive for cocaine and methamphetamine, and a 9mm semiautomatic handgun was found near his body at the scene, the DA’s letter said.
Additional guns and ammunition, drugs and $1,000 in cash were found inside the Corolla.
The woman involved with Lainez, Sky Toya, was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, possession of a controlled substance and first-degree criminal trespass. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison on April 27.

Intoxicated Woman Resists, Berates and Spits on Flagler Deputies During Arrest
On Friday, April 19 just after 7 p.m., deputies responded to a duplex on Farraday Lane in Palm Coast after the FCSO Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call regarding a highly intoxicated female.
Prior to arriving at the residence, Deputy Parker located the woman, Julia Jones, 40, a Palm Coast resident, at the intersection of Farraday Lane and Fawn Lane. While speaking with her, deputies noticed she could not keep her balance and smelled strongly of alcohol. They asked her to stand next to the patrol car to keep from swaying into oncoming traffic, and at that point she became extremely agitated and began screaming.
While deputies attempted to detain her to prevent further disturbance, she began spitting on the deputies and struggling to break free. After several minutes, deputies and medical personnel were able to gain control of Jones and place her in the back of the patrol car. During a search of her backpack, deputies located a small bag that contained three white pills that were identified as containing acetaminophen and hydrocodone.
Jones was arrested on charges of Disorderly Intoxication – Public Place, Cause Disturbance; Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer; and Possession of Hydrocodone. While en route to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, Jones began banging her head repeatedly inside the vehicle and actively screaming. Deputies transported her to AdventHealth for medical clearance before she was taken to jail. Jones posted a bond of $7,500 and was released.
“This woman disrupted a peaceful neighborhood and then continued to berate and attack and spit on deputies,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “If you spit and attack a Deputy Sheriff, we guarantee you a trip to the Green Roof Inn.”

‘Will Run:’ Helicopter video shows Florida motorcyclist weaving through I-4 traffic at 145 mph
The owner of a motorcycle tag that read “Will Run” was arrested Tuesday night after “fleeing recklessly on his motorcycle at speeds of 145 mph” on Interstate 4 in Florida, according to deputies.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said Ashtin Jarvis, 19, taunted and fled from police in several Volusia County cities, as well as Volusia County sheriff’s deputies.
In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s office said it called in Air One, which tracked the motorcycle from the air, instead of having law enforcement pursue Jarvis from the ground.
Video released by the sheriff’s office shows the helicopter following the motorcyclist as they ran a red light at an intersection on International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach, then sped through traffic, running red lights and getting on I-4.
The bike is then seen weaving in and out of traffic on Interstate 4 into Seminole County, at one point reaching speeds of 145 mph. Eventually, the video shows several vehicles stopping the motorcyclists.
Jarvis was eventually arrested in Sanford. The sheriff’s office says he faces charges of fleeing at high speed, reckless driving, and possession of a counterfeit license plate, as well as traffic violations.

Suspect who attacked an elderly man with a hatchet is shot by Kent police officers
Newly released video shows police officers shooting a suspect who was wanted for the unprovoked attack of a 71-year-old man at a park in Federal Way, Washington.
Prosecutors have now cleared the two Kent officers who shot Paleti Anikesi Veniale, 30, on December 23 near 24800 Pacific Highway South.
The video shows officers chase Veniale on foot across a road before he pivots with a large knife in his hand, and one officer falls to the ground. At that moment, the officers fire at Veniale, who then drops the large knife he was holding over the officer, the video shows.
Veniale was wanted for attempted murder in connection to the violent attack on a stranger at a Federal Way park two days prior. According to court records, Veniale followed a 71-year-old man around Town Square Park before running up behind him and striking him with a hatchet on Dec. 21, 2023.
Video of the attack was captured by park surveillance cameras. Prosecutors said Veniale struck the victim numerous times, even after he had fallen to the ground.
According to prosecutors, the 25-second attack was completely unprovoked.
Police say Veniale ran off after the attack, and the victim was rushed to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries to the head, face, and chest. Initially, doctors said it was possible the victim wouldn’t survive his injuries, but he is now listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview almost three months later.
Veniale was charged with attempted murder in the first degree. Prosecutors cited Veniale’s ‘extreme level of violence and extensive violent criminal history’ in charging documents that requested a bail of $1 million.
While Veniale was being treated for his gunshot wounds, court records show he tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Leaked bodycam shows Suffolk Police fatally shooting suspect who stabbed an officer in Bay Shore
A man who allegedly attacked a police officer, stabbing him in the snowy front yard of a Long Island home, was fatally shot and killed Saturday morning, police said.
Three officers from the Suffolk County Police Department responded to a home on Udall Road in Bay Shore around 9 a.m. for a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance, Acting Commissioner Robert Waring said at a press conference.
Waring said two of those officers walked up to the front of the home, with one of the officers opening a screen door, when the caller's husband allegedly charged at them. The man was armed with a large knife, police said, when he jumped on top of one of the officers and started stabbing the cop.
The suspect, identified as Taiquell Woodson, stabbed the officer repeatedly, "clearly intending to kill him," Waring said.
One of the other officers tried to use a taser, which apparently did not work, before the third officer fired their service weapon, striking the man. Waring said the suspect was transported to the hospital, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.
The injured officer was taken to a local hospital, where doctors said a full recovery was expected, but there was the possibility of nerve damage.
"This was a justified shooting. Without the decisive actions of these officers, one of our officers would have been killed today. I am grateful that our officers will be going home to their families," Waring said outside Stony Brook Hospital.
The commissioner told reporters that the incident had been captured on body-worn cameras, but that the footage would "not be released at this time."
Waring also refused to expand on what circumstances led up to the 911 call, but said the caller and a 1-year-old baby at the residence were unharmed.

COPA released body cam video of a deadly police shooting last month in West Garfield Park.
Dexter Reed, 26, was killed by Chicago police on March 21 during a traffic stop that ended with dozens of bullets fired.
COPA said video footage and initial reports confirm that Reed fired first, hitting an officer. COPA said four other officers then returned fire.
COPA said the officers fired approximately 96 times over 41 seconds.
At a press conference Tuesday morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his condolences for Dexter Reed and said he is praying for the full recovery of the injured officer.
Mayor Johnson said the shooting occurred just blocks from his own community.
"It is not lost on me that both Dexter Reed and the officer could have been my students," Mayor Johnson said.
Johnson said he will work with COPA and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office to provide transparency on the investigation.
His family viewed the footage Monday, and they're expected to speak at noon.
Reed was pulled over by five Chicago police officers along the 3800-block of West Ferdinand Street shortly after 6 p.m. on March 21.
The traffic stop ended with Reed's SUV spotted with at least a dozen bullet holes.
He was critically wounded and died at Mt. Sinai Hospital.
Chicago police said an officer was also shot in the wrist but was in good condition and a gun was found at the scene.

Sacramento sheriff's deputies fired 33 gunshots at armed man in deadly Carmichael shootout
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office on Friday evening released video of deputies firing more than 30 gunshots at a man last month in a Carmichael apartment complex, where he was fatally shot after an hours long standoff and firing a gun at the deputies.
William Dean Wilson, 43, of Carmichael was the man fatally wounded in the shootout with deputies Jan. 10, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office released an edited video of the shootout with narration from sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi. The video contains footage gathered from a sheriff’s aerial drone and body-worn cameras on the deputies who confronted Wilson as he exited an apartment that night.
The incident began about 5:30 p.m. Jan. 10 when deputies were called to the Sienna Square Apartments in the 4700 block of Marconi Avenue, between Mission and Root avenues. Gandhi said the deputies received reports of a man firing a gun out of his apartment window.
The deputies arrived at the scene and determined that nobody had been injured, before they created a perimeter around the area and evacuated other residents from the apartment complex to isolate the suspect, later identified as Wilson.
Gandhi said deputies quickly established phone contact with Wilson and started speaking with him. Sheriff’s crisis negotiators and the Special Enforcement Detail team, which is the Sheriff’s Office’s SWAT unit, were called to the apartment complex.
Over the next few hours of negotiations with the suspect, Wilson fired several more gunshots from his apartment toward deputies, Gandhi said.
“Wilson became increasingly threatening toward negotiators, specifically mentioning wanting to kill a deputy,” Gandhi said in the video.
The sheriff’s spokesman said the Special Enforcement Detail team deployed a chemical agent into Wilson’s apartment to push him into coming out and surrendering to the deputies. Gandhi did not say what chemical agent was used.
About 9:40 p.m., Wilson came out of his apartment. Gandhi said deputies spotted Wilson holding a handgun behind his back. He said the deputies repeatedly ordered Wilson to drop the gun, but he refused to put down the firearm.
“Suddenly, (Wilson) raised the gun toward deputies and fired one shot,” Gandhi said in the video. “Three deputies immediately returned fire, striking (Wilson) and causing him to fall to the ground.”
He said members of the Special Enforcement Detail team tried to provide first aid to Wilson before medics arrived. Gandhi in Friday’s video said Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene. Previously, the morning after the shooting, Gandhi said Wilson died at a hospital.
Video from the body-worn cameras show the moments when deputies fired their guns at Wilson. Three deputies — all on the Special Enforcement Detail team — fired gunshots at Wilson.
Gandhi said one deputy, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2016 and part of the team since 2020, fired nine gunshots from his rifle at Wilson. He said another deputy with the Sheriff’s Office since 2007 and with the team since 2021 fired two gunshots from his rifle at Wilson.
A deputy, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2018 and with the special enforcement team since last year, fired 22 gunshots from his rifle at Wilson.
The sheriff’s video does not indicate how many gunshots struck Wilson. No other injuries were reported.

Bodycam shows LASD deputy fatally shooting man armed with precision pick/hook in Antelope Valley
On February 23, 2024, at 6:32 a.m., Palmdale Station deputies responded to a gas station in the 13000 block of Pearblossom Highway, Unincorporated Pearblossom, regarding a call of an assault with a deadly weapon. The caller stated a male was armed with a sharp object, threatening to stab the victim if she didn’t call the police.
The male was later identified as 30-year-old Joseph Westley Henson from the
Pearblossom area.
Deputies located Henson walking eastbound away from the business with a sharp object in his hand. They gave Henson multiple commands to show his hands and drop the weapon, but he refused to comply. The deputies followed Henson in their vehicle as he walked eastbound toward another business.
Deputies continued to speak to Henson, giving additional verbal commands to gain his compliance. Henson stated repeatedly, “You’re going to have to shoot me.” At one point during the encounter, Henson advanced toward the deputies while concealing his right hand inside the front left chest area of his jacket, simulating a weapon, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
After the deputy-involved shooting, Henson ran away from the deputies. The deputies engaged in a short foot pursuit of Henson to the front entrance of the business, where he fell to the ground.
Henson sustained several gunshot wounds. Deputies rendered first aid until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. Henson was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A precision pick/hook was recovered at the scene.
There were no other persons injured in the incident.
