Jazz's Protective Instincts - Dudley Zoo Alarm Startles Orangutans
An Alarm went off at Dudley Zoo which spooked the Orangutan family.
Orangutan Mother Jazz was at the diving door of the two areas. When suddenly an alarm went off. She already had Jim on her arm and Joe quickly crawled into Jazz's arm as well. Jazz didn't seem to be too worried at first, but her daughter Sprout seemed quite spooked, she pulled her mum's hair and went up to the door. Jazz runs off hooting to the other side with the babies save in her arms. Luckily the alarm stopped pretty quickly and no need for concern. She goes inside but quickly comes back out again. Jazz still kept the babies in her arms for a bit. Making sure they are safe. While I concentrated on Jazz and the babies Sprout was inside.
When Jazz started to squeeze her sport again (she is the master of squeezing her spots lol) you knew she was OK and soon after the babies started playing again.
Jim is the one chewing the strap and then climbing on it and Joe is the one by Jazz's back.
Sprout is there at the end, eating a leave with her straw hat on.

Gorilla Shufai’s Cheeky Antics — Challenges with Oumbi and Rolling Escapades
Gorilla youngster Shufai from Twycross Zoo is playing with the door flap, beating his chest at it. He's actually egging on his dad, who is behind the flap. Boxing the flap and biting it, it seems to be tiring work, as he starts to yawn repeatedly. Then, all of a sudden, he hits the flap again as he sees a shadow—his dad is coming out. As always, the magnificent Oumbi’s presence and size earn him some admiration from the visitors. The silverback stops as his son pretends he’s done nothing, acting sweet and innocent. Shufai rolls away when his dad comes over, and the silverback sits down, taking a little rest by the hut. Biddy is dragging her stick behind her, with Ozala just behind. A close-up of Oumbi’s handsome face shows as the silverback goes inside. Shufai beats his chest again at the door, and Oumbi has a quick look. Soon after Oumbi is out again, but about to go inside with some grass or weeds he picked in his hand when he suddenly turns around and snaps at his son, who was following him a bit too closely. Shufai still follows and has a look through the door, but then he beats his chest, hits the flaps, runs off, and rolls down the slope. At the bottom, he grabs a big stick, peeling off the bark with his teeth. He then gets back up again and starts running with the big tree branch dragged behind him. He has another roll, only letting go of the branch mid-roll.

Scaling Heights Sumatran Orangutan Emma and Baby Hilda's Epic Climb
*Scaling heights, Sumatran orangutan Emma and baby Hilda's epic climb. Emma with baby Hilda climb high, huddle under hessian sheet, tightrope walk*
Scaling the heights the Sumatran Orangutan Mother Emma with her baby girl Hilda. Once up the pole they huddle together under the hessian sheet. Zooming out to show you how high they are. After a little rest it's time for a climb. Little Hilda is hanging on her own at first, but after I moved, Hilda is holding on to her mum again. While Emma is tightrope walking. She's holding onto her safety strap. Upscaling is done just as expertly done as the tightrope walk. The Sumatran habitat at the monsoon forest is one of the best I have seen. Such a vast area and amazing nature for the family to explore. A little rest down the bottom and then a climb again. Once up the top, she enjoys her nettles and her baby in her arms. When it gets too windy, she covers up with her hessian sack again.

First Boredom, Then Gorilla Play Shufai’s Day Takes a Turn
Gorilla Shufai leans back, resting against the bridge straps that were reinstalled. He seems a bit bored, but then things take a turn.
He throws himself onto the ground, holding onto the bridge, but almost immediately gets up again. Not only that, but he sniffs the bridge and then uses it as a hammock. After a minute, he gets back down onto the ground.
His mother, Ozala, comes close. He quickly gets up to stay out of her way. Ozala grabs the stick and pulls it away, but surprisingly, not to eat it! If you know Ozala, you'll understand why this is even more surprising—she loves her food. She squeezes under the bridge, rolls onto her back, and moves closer to her son. She puts her hand on his back, and Shufai starts to wrestle with his mum, who is quite happy to let him play. He rolls over onto her belly. They wrestle, and then Shufai is seen sitting on his mother. His behaviour may suggest an attempt at mating, but it's important to note that Shufai is castrated. I did some research on this, and there is more information below.
He gets off his mum, and they both wrestle again.
Given that Shufai was castrated at a young age and is now nearly 8 years old, it's likely that his behaviour is influenced by his upbringing within the troop and the social dynamics he's observed over time. Castration at a young age would have significantly reduced his testosterone levels, which usually limits the development of sexual behaviours and reduces the likelihood of him being seen as a threat by the silverback.
However, even with low testosterone, some social and instinctual behaviours might still manifest, especially as he grows older and becomes more aware of the interactions within the troop. These behaviours might not be as intense or as hormonally driven as they would be in an intact male, but they could still occur due to learned behaviour or residual instincts.
The silverback's lack of intervention suggests that Shufai is not perceived as a significant threat or rival. Since Shufai has been part of the troop from a young age and likely doesn't exhibit the full range of typical male behaviours due to his castration, the silverback might tolerate his presence and actions. The social bonds and hierarchy within gorilla troops are complex, and the silverback might recognise that Shufai does not pose a challenge to his dominance.

Baby Orangutan Struggles and Jazz's Sweet Support
*Baby Orangutan Struggles and Jazz's Sweet Support*
Super mum orangutan Jazz is giving Joe a helping hand. Joe is hungry and wants some milk from Jazz, his surrogate mother/grandma, so he climbs up to Jazz, who has raised him since birth. I wasn't too sure who was making the whimpering sound, or if it came from Joe. He seemed to struggle a bit that day and appeared to be under the weather. I wonder if he has caught a bug of some sort. Jazz reached out over the ledge to pull little Joe up to her. It was such a sweet thing to do. She normally leaves them to their own devices but must have recognised that Joe wasn't feeling too well. Her own son, Jim, followed suit and started nursing as well.
A little later, the two had some playtime. Little Joe looked a little better; perhaps he just needed a rest and a feed.

From Barrel Punches to Popcorn Shufai’s Busy Day at Tycross Zoo
*From barrel punches to popcorn, Shufai at Tycross Zoo. His mother Ozala chases him for misbehaving. Silverback Oumbi eats below while Biddy watches.*
Gorilla Shufai from Tycross Zoo is dismounting the platform, runs to the new barrel and punches it. His mother Ozala was on the other side and not pleased with him doing that, so she chased after him. Ozala stares at him, giving him the evil eye until he moves away. Moments later, you can see in her stance that Ozala is still not happy with him. If it was Lope he wouldn't have stopped, but Shufai took the hint and moved away. Ozala relaxed and sat down so did Shufai.
A little later, Shufai comes out with a lot of wood wool, holding it in his arms and rolls through the grass with it.
He enjoys sitting in the tree and eating his leaves. Silverback Oumbi down below. Eating a leave and getting his branch take away to eat inside. Shufai is sitting on the stone like it's a chair and having some more browse.
At lunch time they had some popcorn. Not a lot, but at least something other than just cabbage. Shufai and Ozala had most of it.
Biddy kept her eye on the silverback. Ozala eats her cabbage on the slope.
Asante has some leaves by the tree.
Next Friday back to the the Gorilla Greenhouse at Beauval's Zoo, France.

Playful Gorilla Brothers Kovanga, M'baku, and Yamba
*Gorilla youngsters Kovanga and M'baku continue their playful antics. Yamba skips by the pool, while the brothers chase each other. Kovanga takes a tumble, but quickly recovers.*
Gorilla youngsters Kovanga and M'baku are continuing their fun in this compilation. Yamba skippes past the pool.
The brothers chase each other with Kovanga running through the pool and on the way back stops in the pool to have a drink.
In the next clip M'baku pushes Kovanga off the rock after a wrestle, in slow you can see that Kovanga still tries to grab the rope but misses it and he falls to the ground. That's quite a drop, but luckily he seems fine and runs off.
Yamba gets up, tries to pull the branch off the platform and then runs off.
In the other direction, Silverback Asato across the room in pursued by his son. Some high-speed action between the youngest brothers. Kovanga has another drink. Mum Kabinda is watching the action.
Mapenzi is beating his chest. In the next footage, it's either Mayélé or Kiwano as they both hold their ears. The arms are crossed over the back and then even starts walking like that with the ears covered. Not sure why they do this. You would think it's really noisy in there. I'm sure it can be at times like all zoos, but at the time of my visit it was very quiet and hardly any people in there.
Yamba is playing with Kiwano. M'baku swinging on the ropes. Mayélé sitting at the top.

Supermum Jazz and Her Energetic Baby Duo
*Supermum Jazz and Her Energetic Baby Duo showcase the bond between Orangutan Super Mum and her babies, Jim and Joe.*
Orangutan Super Mum has always been the strong unflappable mother/grandma. She's reliable and there when the babies need her. She rarely does play with the babies though and leaves that part to Sprout her daughter and mother of Joe. That's why it's special her getting involved a little in the wrestling of the two babies. As I missed the beginning, she was probably resting and the two decided to have a little fun with her. Biting her legs and arms.
In this video the Baby Jim and Joe That's why this video is so special she has a little fun wrestling with the babies.
When Jazz got up the babies continued wrestling on their own.
Joe runs off and Jim stays with Jazz. Sprout is by the moat scratching herself. Jazz moves again and Jim still wants to play with his mum. Joe comes back and joins the two. Sitting down, Jazz seems to try to keep the two boys apart.
The last clip, them walking away was filmed in the new area.

Twycross Zoo Gorillas - Shufai's Leaf Dilemma: What’s Hiding in the Branch?
*Twycross Zoo Gorillas: Grandma enjoys lunch while Shufai faces a leaf dilemma. Something in the branch makes him reluctant to touch it. Oumbi and Ozala investigate. At lunch, Shufai tightrope walks for cabbage*
As promised, I'll keep you up to date with the Gorilla family from Twycross Zoo.
Next week, more from the ZooParc de Beauval in France.
Gorilla Grandma has got her table to eat her lunch. Shufai has an issue with the branch of leaves. There must be an insect or something in there as he's reluctant to touch it. He takes a different branch instead. Oumbi and Ozala go and check it out as well, with Silverback Oumbi having a real close look. Ozala has another look. Shufai now sits in the bunk above, looking down at it. I zoomed in closer but couldn't see anything obvious. When Shufai sits on the log, he looks at it again and wipes it across the floor.
Outside, Asante sits on the top of the climbing frame while the others are busy inside. At lunch, everyone is outside. Today for lunch, it seems like they are getting a Napa cabbage. Shufai comes out, tightrope walking to the hut's roof to get his lunch, with Grandma Biddy down below. Shufai got the cabbage out of the barrel, and Ozala collects it down at the bottom. She takes it up high to enjoy her food on top of the platform. Down below, Oumbi and Biddy are enjoying theirs in harmony for a change. Biddy is on alert, though, when he walks by her. The last clip shows Biddy having a scratch.

Chimpanzee Dylan Strikes Back - Assault on Alice Ignites Chaos
*Chimpanzee Dylan Strikes Back - Dylan's Assault on Alice Ignites Chaos. Chimp altercation escalates at Chester Zoo, with frantic screams and defence attempts, culminating in reassurance and rest for Alice*
Continuing from last weeks video. Chimpanzee Alice had a go at Dylan and now the tables have turned and Chimpanzee Dylan from the Chester Zoo has a go at Chimpanzee Alice. He keeps hitting her as she's screaming. I think Eric is the one that comes charging past the two hooting, hitting the metal and goes inside.
Suddenly all the chimps inside storm out and it gets even louder. Dylan hits Alice with both hands. Even jumping up to get more power. The others try to defend her. Even one of the youngsters, who might be her daughter Annie tries to hold Dylan's back trying to stop him.
Then the tables turn again and Alice and maybe Farthing, the female who helped her both run after Dylan. Then they disappear into the wooded area. The others look on.
Sally comes out jumps up, and claps her hands. Then Alice and the other female come back to the front, still screaming running back inside, but they are straight back out again. They are still noisy.
The next bit you might have seen in the shorts. Alice seems to get reassurance from Eric. Mandy lets out a hoot. They all sit near the door a few minutes later as it quiets down. Alice still showing her teeth. After feeding time, Alice has a deserving rest by the bush.

Chimpanzee Chaos in 8K Alice's Ear-Splitting Vendetta on Dylon
*Chimpanzees at Chester Zoo unsettled, Alice furious, chasing the male chimp, others join. Eric emerges, Sally kicks door. Hooting. Alice screams and attacks. Drama unfolds.*
"It's feeding time and the Chimps are getting unsettled and noisy. Alice has a beef with Dylan and chases him around with the other females and Carlos is there as well.
I do love Eric coming out of the wooded area. Sally with her beautiful unique markings is kicking that metal door. Then some hooting and they are getting their snack, primate pellets. Alice starts screaming again at Dylan and then she attacks him. They aren't happy with him.

Alice has an older daughter named Annie.
Tragically Alice lost her baby recently (about May 2024, born in December 2023). It has been confirmed by Chester Zoo staff when questioned, but no reason given and no public announcement was made as far as I know.

Jambo And His Group Braving The Cold
Jambo, the stylishly hairless chimp, struts through the grass on a quest for grub, all part of the daily enrichment regimen. They prefer to channel their inner forager through the lush greenery. Flynn, the gourmet gorilla, scores himself a leek and some primate gourmet biscuits. Meanwhile, Kibali proudly parades with a cauliflower and Victoria has also got her food. Jomar kicks back in the hammock, but wait, here comes Jambo, sporting a leek like a seasoned cigar aficionado, later stumbling upon not one, but two halves of cauliflower. With his loot in tow, he gracefully descends and heads indoors, perhaps to plan his next culinary feast or to contemplate the mysteries of the universe.

Hairless Chimp Jambo, the alpha male was born at Twycross Zoo in England. He has had alopecia, a form of hair loss since his youth. He was born on June 9, 1982.
In November 2018, Jambo lost his ear, possibly due to an accidental fight with his mother. Attempts to reattach it with skin glue failed as he continued to pick on it. In October 2022, he also lost a toe, with the cause unknown but possibly related to fights and agitation during mating season.
In 2018, the chimpanzees received a new habitat called "Chimpanzee Eden." It spans 1,160 square meters and includes two seven-meter-high indoor spaces connected to a large outdoor area with climbing frames and huts.

Tombol's Gentle Touch for His Adorable Baby Sister
Orangutan mother Sarikei from Chester Zoo is holding her baby daughter. She is trying to bite/suckle Mum's mouth. Mum's hand is bigger than her daughter's head. getting more active every day, the little one grabs the rope, biting it and pulling herself up.
That little foot grabbed Mum's hair to hold on tight.
Sarikei older son Tombol comes to have a look at his baby sister and gently touches her face. Was that a smile from Tombol? The baby is suckling on mum's face again. Tombol touches the baby's hand, but Mum's reaction makes him pull away. Tombol tries to get closer. He tries again to touch her hand, but Mum is very protective. Tombol goes off and plays with the hessian sack.
The baby was born on the 31st of August 2023 to Mother Sarikei and Father Willie I believe. I believe they haven't named the baby yet.
Next week back to Jazz and the babies again!

Gorilla N'yaounda's Signals and Indigó's Pole Performance
*At Budapest Gorilla feeding, N'yaounda signals for more food, Indigó seeks attention but misses, N'yaounda enjoys greens, Silverback Golo is selective with his food, and Indigó stretches on poles.*
Continuing with the feeding time at the Budapest Gorilla outdoors. Gorilla N'yaounda has her own way of signaling that she wants more food. She lifts up her arm when she wants more. Indigó sits on the pole again, beating her chest. lease notice me, I'm here.... . , but she misses the food again and N'yaounda does more hand signals and just like the last video, she really seems to enjoy her greens. Silverback Golo is quite choosy in what he likes and discards part of the leak, throwing it away. In the back N'yaounda puts her hand up again and receives another leak as well. While Indigó seems to have a stretch on two poles.

Gorilla Indigo's Food Fumbles On A Pole At Budapest Zoo
*Indigó cleverly stakes out the top of a pole during feeding time at Budapest Gorilla Outside, showcasing amusing attempts to catch her favourite food, while the rest of the gorilla family enjoys their meals in preferred spots.*
It's feeding time at the Budapest Gorilla Outside. The food is thrown in from above from two keepers. Indigó's favourite place to get her food is on top of the pole, closer to the keepers while the others all seem to have their favourite place.
The first thing that is getting thrown Indigó tries to catch it but fails. She stands up on the pole and beats her chest. The second one, nope went past her as well, but you have to give it to her she sticks with her plan and stays on the pole. Silverback Golo and Indigó's mum N'yaounda are tucking into their lettuces. Sweet Indigó is still holding her hands out to get some food and finally, she gets her lettuce. N'yaounda 'has another lettuce, pulling a bit off and crunching it together before eating. Just look at her face, truly enjoying her lettuce. Indigó quickly puts out her arms for some more, so funny with her straightening up her back. The leek goes past her, but then she catches some lettuce. Iringo comes down from the strap and gets herself some food that has fallen onto the grass. Some more hit-and-miss moments for Indigó before she dismounts from the pole to get some food from the ground.
Next week more from the family. N'yaounda signs when she wants more.

Gorilla Youngsters Wild Side
Gorilla Youngster Indigo from the Budapest Zoo has a wild side. She's playing on the strap and messing around with the wood wool. Even Dad Golo is not safe from her energy. She has a quick wrestle with the silverback before she returns to the strap. Golo kept his calm.
Iringa who I think is her surrogate mother chases her off. Indigo was hand raised and now she spends most of her time with Iringa. Iringa is quite a big girl, but boy can she move and play like a youngster when she wants to. Last year got got asked if she was pregnant, this time I got told nope, she just likes her food. Must be a common answer as I got the same answer from Twycross staff when I enquired about Ozala :-).
When Indigo is back on the strap, it's Liesel the other female on the right. Liesel is not as keen to play so she moves away from the energetic youngster. A quick face shot of Liesel, taken outside where the light was a lot better. Outside Indigo has some more wood wool fun and some more shots of Indigo.
Filmed Oct 2023.
The gorillas at the Budapest Zoo are very difficult to film inside as they have a 1.5m barrier away from the window. That's why I'm unable to cut out any glare.

Jambo's Bug Fighting Tactics at Twycross Zoo
Jambo, the bald chimpanzee from the Twycross Zoo, thoroughly enjoys his time lounging in the hammock outdoors. However, there's a hiccup – bothersome insects that he shoos away. When the insect buzz becomes overwhelming, he ascends to the top, seeking refuge from the pesky critters.
#HairlessChimpanzee #HairlessChimp
Hairless Chimp Jambo, the alpha male was born at Twycross Zoo in England. He has had alopecia, a form of hair loss since his youth. Born on June 9, 1982, he shares the same habitat with Coco his mother, who is the oldest animal at Twycross Zoo. Jambo's siblings from his father's side, Holly (born December 27, 1982) and Jomar (born December 28, 1990), are also in the same habitat. His first son Peter is in neighbouring enclosures.
In November 2018, Jambo lost his ear, possibly due to an accidental fight with his mother. Attempts to reattach it with skin glue failed as he continued to pick on it. In October 2022, he also lost a toe, with the cause unknown but possibly related to fights and agitation during mating season.

Playful Orangutan Duo Sari and Lursa's Zoo Escapades
Orangutan youngsters Sari and Lursa (2), hailing from the Leipzig Zoo in Germany, truly relish their playtime. Sari, the elder of the two, may have the advantage, but that doesn't deter Lursa. However, after a playful bout, Lursa decides to break free and makes a swift dash towards her mother. Once there, she skillfully turns her mum around for a nurturing moment.

Jambo's Itchy Dilemma at Twycross Zoo
Jambo the Hairless chimp from the Twycross Zoo has what looks like an itchy insect bite on his back. He feels the swollen lump, has a quick scratch but then scratches another bite. He does get treated for his dry skin, but as you can imagine with chimps it doesn't last long with all the grooming they do. He moves off and then stops in front of another window before he goes back inside.

In 2018, the chimpanzees received a new habitat called "Chimpanzee Eden." It spans 1,160 square meters and includes two seven-meter-high indoor spaces connected to a large outdoor area with climbing frames and huts.

Lope's Pad & Gorilla Family Biddy, Shufai, Ozala and Oumbi in Action
As people wanted to see Lope's family as well, I have both for you today. The family and Lope in his bachelor pad.
I just got there when Gorilla Shufai came off the Hut's roof and balanced along the new strap. He has to get a bit more practice as he was wobbling like a Jenga tower after a few too many moves lol. A quick upright walk before mum Ozala chased him away from the food.
Even Ozala tested out the new smaller-length strap. She'll do anything to get her hands on those green beans. She crosses over again to the other side and once on the ground again she gets chased by the Oumbi the Silverback. Shufai found a tennis ball at the bottom. He has a good sniff at it and well then just stands up straight and throws it in the air. He walks up the hill and then hits the hut. Something he learned from his brother Lope.
Gorilla Biddy was enjoying her snack in the sunshine on the other side. Unfortunately not for long as Oumbie came out and stole her branch from her and went straight back in. You can just see his bum, as I was just about to change the battery and stopped recording when he came out. Biddy was watching the door before hand, so she kind of knew something was about to happen, I just thought I was quicker in changing the battery. Biddy seems to have a bald patch. Highly likely an insect bite where she scratched herself. She did get some food a bit later and she was able to eat all in peace inside. Unfortunately, Asante was only inside and it was too busy for me to film her there.
Now to Lope in his bachelor pad. When I got there, he was looking at the tortoise again and all I could see was his foot. He's on the move again and stops at the end of a log to have a sniff. He kept himself mostly to the back where it is difficult to film. I got him when he walked passed me and then when he climbed to the top. Stopping to get something on the pole with one of his leg up in the air.

As you might know, Lope is in his bachelor pad and in quarantine for him to be moved abroad. The rumours are it's going to be France, Zoo Arcachon Basin, but there is still no confirmation.

Leipzig Zoo's Orangutans - A Tale of Paper and Play
These are the Zoo Lepzig Germany Orangutans. They have a wonderful inside. No glass or fencing and full of natural light.
Sari (6) got herself some packing paper and got it wrapped around her. She lets herself fall backwards and then moves off with the paper covering herself up. Swinging at the bottom in the next clip are Sari and Lursa (2) the youngest Orangutan in the group. In the following clip, you see Orangutan Dokana (34) dragging some packing paper in her mouth.
Look into the eyes of flanges Orangutan Male Bimbo. What a beautiful Orangutan. He has got this beautiful two-tone auburn hair. Just look at that beard and watch his eyebrows they appear to be really light. Next up is Raja (20), also with her own packing paper.
Back to Bimbo as he sits by the waterfall. He's also got some paper which he drapes in the water before covering himself with it. It was quite a hot day, so he was being quite clever to cool down a bit.

Orangutan Baby Jim's Muddy Playtime
Jim is getting all muddy, playing with some muddy grass. When he walks off he has a brown leave stuck to his face. Hanging on the strap again with his muddy feet and something on his lip.
After his play, a quick dash back to his mum and both Jim and Joe are in Jazz's arms again. Sprout the mother of Joe was up the top, trying to drink her own milk and then biting the strap.

Jambo The Hairless Chimp In A Huge Brawl
Jambo the hairless chimpanzee hasn't got it easy.
The chimp from the Twycross Zoo ended up in a huge brawl again, resulting in some big cuts. This isn't Jambo's first injury, he has enough battle scars to show. The biggest one losing an ear in a battle. I always thought he lost his ear, fighting with his challenger Kibali, as this is what the educational talks were saying, but it turns out the keepers of the chimps said that it was his mum that did it accidentally. Twycross did try to save the ear, as it was only partly ripped at first, they used skin glue, but Jambo kept playing with it and eventually he lost his whole ear.
The bite he received this time looks quite bad and deep, but sadly this is a common thing among chimps and not just captive chimpanzees. Wild chimpanzees just like other animals fight to stay on top and even kill. I'm sure you're aware of lots of wildlife programs that show this behaviour all the time in different types of animals.
Jambo got in a fight with a male when all the rest of the troop joined in and a massive fight started. Some of the group members jumped on top of Jambo, biting him and others like the females tried to protect him. The chimp on the left is taking a bite out of Jambo and pulls his leg, you can just see this to the left. You can also see Rosie (the chimp with the pink face) cutting in, to defend Jambo. You'll also see Jambo's Daughter Genet ( brown chimp towards the camera) try to get the others off Jambo as well.
As quickly as it started it stopped again and everybody dispersed. Jambo licked his wounds and made his way outside. With the cold winter air, his breathing looks like he's having a smoke and a quiet moment for himself. Charlotte his half-sister comes to check on him and lick his wounds, but Jambo moves away.
Twycross zoo did write an article a while ago when the younger male Kibali was joining the group, but it's still quite relevant now.
They wrote
"What’s happening with the TZ chimpanzees?
Some of the younger females in the group are changing their allegiance to one of our young virile males, Kibali. This attention is giving Kibali more confidence and a keen interest in mating. Jambo is not in favour of this and as a leader of the group tries to control the situation, which sometimes leads to clashes between the two males.
Challenges for power, although completely natural, are not for the faint-hearted. It involves the challenging chimp working to ensure he has his backup in place (lots of bonds forming with his chimpanzee pals) and then displaying aggressive behaviour toward the dominant male. The extent of this can vary from lots of loud screaming and chasing around to the use of their strong arms and teeth to prove their power, which may create some injuries. Recently Kibali and Jambo have been entering into this type of combat, with Jambo receiving some nasty-looking wounds. Up until now Kibali has been unable to gain control of the group but he might decide to try his luck again in the future. This is causing tension within the group from time to time while they are transitioning through a time of unrest at the top.
What do we do?
It is important that our chimpanzees are given the space and freedom to live as close to a wild situation as possible. This means foods they have to forage for, space to climb up and along, high places to sleep, freedom of choice to go outside, stay inside, to be seen by the public or not and most importantly to create their own hierarchy. If we were to get too involved in this process it could mean potentially training the chimpanzees to rely on human intervention or it could even elongate the issue. We have an amazing keeper team to take care of our animals, knowing when to intervene or not, and a very well-trained on-site vet team, who monitor and treat injuries as required. Chimpanzees heal very quickly; we don’t rush in to treat injuries (which would require a full general anaesthetic) unless absolutely necessary but tend to let the wounds heal themselves where possible. So in general – we allow our chimpanzees to be chimpanzees!"

Pileated gibbons, like Valerie and dad Helmut, are known for their graceful movements and enchanting songs. These apes are found in the lush forests of Southeast Asia, swinging effortlessly through the trees with their long arms. Their melodious calls are a signature feature of the rainforest, and they play a crucial role in the ecosystem.
Join us in celebrating this precious new life and learn more about the fascinating world of Pileated gibbons. Don't miss out on this heartwarming video
🌿📹 #PileatedGibbons #TwycrossZoo #NewbornGibbon
Physical Characteristics:
Pileated gibbons are small apes with distinctive features. They have long, slender arms and no tail.
Their fur coloration can vary, but it often includes black, dark brown, or grayish fur with a lighter face and hands.
One of their most remarkable features is their white cheeks and throat, which make them easily recognizable.
Adult males and females have different fur colorations. Adult males are typically black with white facial markings, while adult females are a lighter color with dark facial markings.
Behaviour:
Pileated gibbons are known for their incredible agility and ability to swing through the trees using their long arms.
They are highly territorial and communicate with loud vocalizations that can be heard over long distances.
These gibbons are monogamous, forming strong bonds with a single mate. They often have a single offspring, and the family unit is crucial to their social structure.
Their diet primarily consists of fruit, leaves, and other plant materials.
Conservation Status:
Pileated gibbons, like many other gibbon species, face threats such as habitat loss due to deforestation and illegal wildlife trade.
They are classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
Conservation efforts are in place to protect their habitat and combat illegal trade to ensure the survival of these remarkable primates.
Observing Pileated gibbons in their natural habitat or at accredited zoos, like Twycross Zoo, provides valuable insights into their behaviour and highlights the importance of conserving their fragile ecosystems.
