*Correction: the Rane MP2015 is a digital mixer not analog. I was fooled by the website's description: "the MP2015's analog soul and digital heart". There's a lot of talk online about which DJ mixer sounds the best and why, so I wanted to find out for sure. I put three of the best DJ mixers available now head-to-head (along with one cheap mixer) to see how they differ in sound quality. For each mixer I play a segment of my new song "The Dirty" at normal gain, then sweep the low pass and high pass filters, and then also push the gain into the red (clipping). Making a stellar DJ mix shouldn't be locked to having CDJs and a mixer. In this video I'll show you how to make them in Ableton Live by stitching songs together- warping tracks, locking them to the grid, BPM automating, adjusting EQ, gain, filter, and adding effects between different genres of music. In this tutorial I've gone from 127 BPM House music to 127 BPM Drum & Bass. I've also utilized a custom "DJ Mixer Channel Audio Effects Rack" that includes all the standard effects that would be on a DJ mixer, and features XFer Record's DJM Filter VST plugin to further emulate mixing on an actual mixer. Nothing crazy- just showing how I replaced the rear quarter window in my 2015 WRX. There weren't any tutorials or even write-ups on how to do this so I figured I'd document it for everyone else. Cheers!

The S2400 has some of the best groove and punch on the planet. It also has Choke Groups that can make sounds cut each other off, creating a gating effect between the various sounds in your songs. Combined, this makes for a SERIOUSLY awesome sounding drum machine sampler, but getting that same sound you worked hard to perfect into your DAW requires a special technique in order to preserve all the groove you created. In this video, I'll explain WHY choke grouping is a thing, WHY you want to use it, HOW it affects your songs, and HOW to properly record your tracks from the S2400 into your DAW. After searching for some of the wildest, glitchiest hardware effects boxes I could fine, I stumbled across the Boss RSD-10. This thing is vintage digital mayhem. What makes it unique is that it's terribly designed in the best way meaning it does all the things a typical delay unit... well... shouldn't. It frequently glitches out when switching modes. It saves "ghost" recordings in it's memory and replays them at random times, layered with the current original sound. It also has a "keyboard input" which allows you to plug a synthesizer into it and trigger back sampled recordings in different pitches, OR change the pitch tracking of the delayed signal playback. This of course leads to even more weirdness. That being said, the Boss RSD-10 is highly usable and said to be many producer's secret weapon. In this video I'll show you various effects builds that quite often make their way into my songs using the various delay ranges and manually automating the feedback knob. Also, I frequently feed loops into it and play with the various parameters while recording in Ableton, capturing all those beautifully odd nuggets of gold that you can slice out and use for unique percussion bits in my music. This particular unit requires a "wet mod" in order to get a 100% wet signal out of it. This was a daunting task at first because it does require you take the entire unit apart and de-solder and remove a capacitor, but fortunately I captured the entire process with photos and will be writing up a "How To" on my website which I'll link here soon. These Boss effects units are now fairly rare, and while hard to find, can usually be had for a couple hundred dollars, so modifying them to become strange delay glitch machines isn't too nerve wracking- highly recommended in fact. In this video I'm using my beloved Isla Instruments S2400 sampler to trigger sounds into the Boss RSD-10 for effects. Guitar pedals aren't just for guitars, and the Julianna Deluxe is a perfect case-in-point. This stereo chorus and vibrato pedal creates fantastic results paired with your synthesizer, sampler, or drum machine in the studio. While its controls may look pretty standard, this thing packs a whole-lot of flexibility and tone-shaping controls in a standard pedal sized enclosure. You've got two LFOs that can be assigned to each other to create lush and wide choruses, subtle or wild vibratos, and everything in between. The Julianna Deluxe also lets you use both outputs (mono & stereo) to stack your signal making your sounds huge, allowing you to control the stereo image as well. I fed a bunch of samples from my trusty S2400 through the Julianna Deluxe to test out it's various tones and see what kind of effects I could get on the way into my DAW. There's LOTS of nuance in this thing. It can be wild or subtle. I was pleasantly surprised at how it made my samples 'sit in the mix' with drums. Check the video and listen for yourself! *Now accepting clients for mixing & mastering services - see below* I had a few people request a shorter version of my "how to make stems" video, so here's a shorter, more concise tutorial on how to make stems for mixing, mastering, and remixing, and how to zip them and send them. Keep in mind, if you're going to be printing individual stems for mixing, you'll want to solo each track independently instead of grouping them together. The rest is the same process however. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO DOUBLE CHECK YOUR STEMS BEFORE SENDING. I make a strong point of this because if the stems are not correct it creates a huge headache, so lets get it right the first time! Just pop them back into your DAW before zipping them and sending them to me or your mix/mastering engineer. Takes an extra couple of minutes but saves a lot of headache in the future. Granular synthesis has for a long time been an integral technique used by sampler and synthesis fanatics everywhere. It's a powerful technique where a "grain" or small snippet of a sample is used as the base sound or waveform of a larger sounding synthesizer preset, typically made with a digital sampler or granular synthesizer. The methods vary a bit depending on which you're using, but they largely start from the same place- using a tiny bit of sound to create a larger, more complex sound. In this video I'll show you how to do granular synthesis on the Isla Instruments S2400. It's important to note that this machine, while it's incredible in all that it can do and how it sounds, is still in the early stages of firmware development and many people still haven't received their units, so over time the methods used in this video may change and need to be updated. I'll make sure to stay on top of this and make new videos as the machine grows and progresses. Alright- some of the people on the S2400 forum were requesting those of us who had our units make more video content for them to watch while they were waiting for their units. I've never actually made a video before actually learning a piece of gear inside and out, but in this instance I thought it would be fun to talk about why I'm excited about this thing, make some sounds on it, and let you all watch me fumble my way through working with it. Here's the thing- for me, this is a piece of gear that I've dreamed about owning for well over a decade, and the team over at Isla Instruments finally made it, so this is not a piece of gear that I'll try and sell for something else. It truly is a something that I'll most likely have for life and so I will without a doubt be making LOTS of videos on it- tutorials, performances, etc. This video is just the start and meant to be taken lightly.
