060: Civil War and Rumors of Wars
Opening: Matthew 24:6-8.
You will hear of Wars and Rumors of Wars. The apocalypse doesn't come without it's allure. At risk of chasing the current zeitgeist, this solo production of the REDACTED Culture Cast approaches the topic of Civil War with a series of questions that lead to warnings. The topic of Civil War continues to be attractive in media, this production included, partly because of the urgency it brings, and also through the subjects reflection of the state of nations.
This subject is further muddied by the rising interest in 5th Generation Warfare, another subject of mystery and intrigue. If true, who are the actors? If this is war, then what?

059: Ben Griffith of Flux Defense and Snake Staff Systems
Ben Griffith of Flux Defense joins the show to talk about both his process of development, and how they look at the firearm as a tool. While the Flux Defense Raider isn't the first time someone has tried to improve the capabilities of a pistol, it represents a combination of new manufacturing capabilities, as well as the use of interchangeable parts to turn an otherwise stock handgun into a very different tool.
But this show isn't only about designing a new tool, as we discuss political homelessness, conflict in the 21st century, and some of the principles of Gun Culture.

057: Who is Allowed in Gun Culture?
The question of who is allowed in Gun Culture has once again risen to the surface, thanks to the actions of a few choice individuals. Before we are all accused once again of gatekeeping, we're going to take a look at the framework of the question and how it points out how we think about about principles, rights, and community.
Important distinctions:
-Rights vs Community
-Big Tent vs Tribes
-Individual Choice vs Cultural Norms

056: Zach Stone on Touching Grass, Cultural Influence, and Adding Value
For a culture that is visually centered on the outdoors, it suffers many of the same blights that plague the greater social environment. Sometimes our solutions are distilled into phrases like "go out and touch grass."
Social Media, and these people we call "Influencers" have played a role in Gun Culture for the best when they combine education with entertainment, which isn't exclusive to their position. We consider what it means for Americana going forward.
For all the accusations leveled against American Gun Culture, in this episode we look at the similarities and differences between the U.S. and Australian approach to their citizens.
Zach Stone's influence in Gun Culture exists of a brand owner who works within other brands.

055: Isaac Botkin of T.Rex Arms on Decentralization
Decentralization is in the main stream, but rarely by that name. Whether it's a lack of faith in the federal government, or a reaction to what looks like crumbling complex systems, or a focus on local communities, to calls for National Divorce, we might wonder if the case for decentralization is purely evidenced by the failures of centralized power.
Isaac Botkin joins us again to discuss what decentralization looks like on the ground floor, and what the limitations of the principle may be.

054: Decentralization vs Specialization
An exploratory episode considering the concepts of Decentralization and its tension with Specialization, as applied to industry, societies, culture, teams, and the future we are looking to create.
Movies, Games, and even contemporary politics have presented this idea that everyone has something to offer the team. In Lord of the Rings, we have the skills of Legolas, the wisdom of Gandalf, the expertise of Gimli, and the Leadership of Aragorn to constitute the Fellowship of the Ring. But does that translate to Gun Culture? This is a touchpoint of where we have examples from the Military, but that structure does not necessarily apply to Citizens, or might not be advantageous.
So instead of presenting a direct series of principles outright, this episode seeks to explore the relationship between two potentially contrasting concepts: decentralization and specialization, and how we can think about it when it comes to Gun Culture and Americana as a whole.

053: Mike Majewski of Ferro Concepts, Open Source Defense
-Are you so uncompromising in your liberty to allow your enemy to be armed?
A perpetual question when it comes to gun culture, where answers delivered too easy are suspect and the time spent considering this question is evidenced in the way it is delivered. Sometime simple, often not, it sets the tone for this conversation with Mike Majewski of Ferro Concepts and Open Source Defense.
Once again we are beginning with distinctions, but this time it begins in the Classroom. When working as a teacher on the collegiate level, Mike Majewski worked to instill true Craftsmanship in the arts as technology, be it digital cameras or social media impacted the field.

051: 5th Generational Warfare Myth and Reality
The Term "5th Generational Warfare" gets used more and more as our ability to evaluate information continues to degrade, institutionally and culturally. Often that intellectual degradation is seen as evidence of deliberate attempts to sabotage a society, but we ask the question, is that sufficient evidence?
What are the other generations of warfare?
How did we get here?
What are the tactics and tools?
What about a justified application of war?
These questions and more serve as the topic of this episode of the REDACTED Culture Cast, and part of our mission to re-engage the intellect in how we understand conflict, violence, and Human Rights.

050: Jack Potter of Guerrilla Tactical on Homesteading, Self Sufficiency, and Who Gun Culture is For
From training and traveling around the world, to working towards self-sufficiency, Jack Potter brings a conversation to the table which straddles adventure and homesteading. Indicative of the shift in culture, his approach to being self-reliant differs from the self-isolating zeitgeist of the past. As the founder of Guerrilla Tactical, Jack Potter talks about how he sees the culture we are actively participating in and what that means to him.
Guerrilla Tactical also represents a certain breed of the American Dream which starts in a Garage, not a Think Tank. While it's not his experience which validates his approach, it serves as context for what we are concerned about.

049: Fred Baker of Counting Coup Tactical
In this conversation with Fred of Counting Coup Tactical, we address how so much of Gun Culture has been using capability as a vector for evaluating the morality of the subject. This leads to a discussion on how the increased capabilities of both individuals and government has opened up new moral quandaries.
At what cost? At what cost do we maintain liberty or safety, and are they at odds? The capability of government organizations to collect data expands, it also leads to new question on who are of interest, and what that entails when it comes to a society which at least claims to value freedom.
In the second half we look at what the long term goal of Gun Culture could be.

048: What Propaganda Teaches Us About Virtue
Buried in each explanation are a series of assumptions about the world we live in. For example, mystics of propaganda speak as if all of society's problems can be boiled down to someone with power, be it government or a microphone, manipulating an otherwise good-willed populous. The assumption buried within is the idea that there is a fundamental difference between the propagandist, and the population. A distinction is made at the metaphysical level, which is buried within the compelling argument that "the people" are too easily controlled by propaganda.
While making an overt argument THAT propaganda has its effect on people, it imbeds a subtle implied argument HOW that happens. As a result, buried in a framework of the world we live in, the distinction between value and context is poorly plastered over.
From this description we can see the relationship between the experience of professional warfighters and the values imbedded within Gun Culture.

047: Collin Underdahl on Education, Knowledge, and Wisdom
Drawing a distinction between three terms often intermingled, we discuss what the difference between Education, Knowledge, and Wisdom looks like in Gun Culture with Collin Underdahl. Returning to the show for another conversation, the question also extends into how we think of the society we live in.
Where does achievement fit in the mix? Experience?
How do we evaluate our own choices and decisions going forward?
We would encounter these concepts in gun culture, be it veteran status, courses taken, functioning as an instructor, or choosing a tool, how we think about these concepts will play out, and for the better when we consider them accurately.

046: Jared of Orion Training Group on the New Ethic of Instructors
Not long ago, it was common for Instructors to look to lawyers to inform them of the ethical framework they were expected to teach. But today, Gun Culture is much more concerned with both the moral and legal question when it comes to the use of Force. As Instructors have changed the material and methods of teaching available to open enrollment courses, some of this can be attributed to the above-noted shift in the community.
As the head of Orion Training Group, Jared Arceneaux returns to the REDACTED Culture Cast to discuss the finer details and argue for what he believes is the appropriate ethical framework for instruction.
Gun Culture is more than possessing an item, but instead implies a sense of action and pursuit of virtue.

REDACTED Culture Cast 026: Josh Froelich on Competing at the World Level and Expanding into Culture
Josh Froelich represents the higher echelon of competition shooting, but that's simply the introduction. One key aspect of Gun Culture is how we experience the relationship between gear, practice, performance, and goal setting. While some say things like mission-dictates-gear, it's not uncommon to find similar principles albeit with different language in the competition scene.
While the conversations starts with chasing widgets, Josh Froelich talks about what it took for him to keep improving, the pitfalls of mindset, and the milestones that led to where he's at. The microcosm of Competition echoes outward into the macrocosm of Gun Culture.

045: The Human Right to Privacy
Privacy may just be more important than the Right to Bear Arms.
From brigands in the streets, to the halls of Congress, the term 'Rights' gets thrown around so flippantly that we should wonder if it retains any true value. In contrast, such unsanctimonious use can also be seen as tribute to the weight the concept of a right imposes on reality. As our world changes through the amoral development of technology, to the morally dubious encroachment of a surveillance state, it is not only what we think, but how we think about what we believe that will have implications on the world to come.
Privacy is something that can be threatened, but why we value it must be called into question. What we believe about morality, and the rights of the individual will have long-tail impact on what we argue to be true.

REDACTED Culture Cast 025: Chris Fettes on becoming a Navy SEAL, Ice Cream, and Saving Lives
From the outside looking in, it may be easy to define military members by their unit, record, or number of deployments. But from the inside looking out, individuals in the military have hobbies, and interests which ride on a narrow line of defining who they are. Turns out the age of individualism comes with the threat of perpetual identity crises.
Chris Fettes talks about the need for acceptance and how it motivated him to become a Navy SEAL. After leaving the military, he has carried on an interest in both Ice Cream and Saving Lives into new ventures going forward.
While media outside the military simplifies SEALs as the elite of the elite, and those in the military sometimes describe them as the counter-culture of Special Operations.

The battlefield is always changing, and while we can look back at the technology that has played a decisive role in the history of warfare: Napoleon's Cannons, Industrialized Manufacturing of Ammunition, Battlefield Medicine, it is the people and ideas that move them which makes the greatest impact. Without human will, they are inanimate objects.

REDACTED Culture Cast 023: Frank Bito of Bull Creek Strategic on the Duality of Contracting
The time has come to let die the idea that private contracting is grass-is-greener situation. In exchange for looser uniform restrictions, and a modicum of control over one's schedule, one has to put up with constant pressure to leave home behind, and will generally face greater scrutiny when it comes to the use of force.
Frank Bito, of Bull Creek Strategic, and Escarpment Arms talks about the cost of friendship and cutthroat nature of the Private Contracting Circle. After a time in the Army, and continuing to work in a conflict zone, he started a training company and gun shop.
One constant that's more substance than style within the contracting world is this: Your Reputation is Everything. Similarly, no matter where one exists within gun culture, building one's reputation on a foundation of sand almost always catches up. Sometimes this looks like 'Stolen Valor' but more often it boils down to overpromising and underperforming, consistently, over time.

REDACTED Culture Cast 020: Fixing Reconnaissance with Blake Flannery of Maneuver Training Solutions
Jokes, Joys, and Despairs aside, Gun Culture, like any other, has its trends. And while Recce may look like it's challenging the mystical throne that has been held by CQB, it suffers what all revolutionaries eventually must deal with: becoming the one thing they hate. One thing about CQB that became old, and quickly, was the idea that it was some secretive art, part technique, part magic, and if we're not careful, reconnaissance may repeat the same fate.
So today we have a conversations with Blake Flannery of Maneuver Training Solutions, who has spent more years in Recon than many of us have been carrying a rifle, for fun or otherwise. We start with where it belongs in the greater ecosystems, and break down some of the mystery into objectives, goals, and techniques.

REDACTED Culture Cast 014: Isaac Botkin of T.Rex Arms on Foundations of 2A and the Enlightenment
It's not enough to use the Second Amendment as merely a legal defense against tyranny. Just as the paper itself does not establish a Human Right, neither does the institution that honors it. But these concepts did not arrive out of the void. Rather the ideas that culminated in the Second Amendment took centuries to crystalize into a codification intending to restrict governments from infringing on the rights of the people.
Politicians, movements, and ideologies can all be guilty of simplifying history into a specific narrative: the Enlightenment was a battle between science and religion, the American war for Independence was between good Colonials and bad Red Coats, and history is only written by the victor. While these generalizations can feel helpful at times, if we are to learn from history, we must first understand it, and in order to do so, we must consider how we gather information on the subject.
In addition to producing gear for the culture, T.Rex arms also dedicates time to participate in culture building. Isaac Botkin joins the show to discuss what had to come to pass before we were able to produce a document with the express purpose of defending the right to bear arms.

REDACTED Culture Cast 018: Moral Men and Immoral War
There are pernicious ideas which travel through cultures, and peoples which offer a moral exchange: gain temporary relief from the burden of thinking, in exchange for a later crisis of conscience. This idea travels through depictions of war as a dehumanizing force. It commits multiple logical fallacies along the way, and ones that, unlike in the halls of academia, leave trails of bodies wherever they go.
In this episode of the REDACTED Culture Cast, the idea of where morality is located sits at the center of a series of considerations, addressing the effectiveness of pragmatism, how leadership ought function, and what people pay when they reject the responsibility of being thinking men.
