081: The Dunning Kruger Effect in CQB
Terms like the Dunning-Kruger Effect are often used to explain the phenomena presented when we observe people who's level of confidence does not appear to match their level of skill. While we may often use it to observe this demeanor in others, the real value comes from introspection.
So we take the Model often represented in an X-Y Graph, and apply it to the skillset of CQB as an example of how we might consider how we think about our own skill development.
If the X axis measures skill, and the Y axis measures confidence, a pattern emerges regarding the relationship between the two.
Section 1: The ascent of fundamentals.
Section 2: The plateau of Dogma
Section 3: The Descent of Renaissance
Section 4: The Ascent of Mature Skill
Section 1: Begins with building a naive and unskilled individual’s basic abilities in regards to the skill. Each valid method of instruction develops the student in the execution of basic maneuvers, principles, and rules. Foundations take time to build, repeated practice is necessary to cement lessons learned.
Rules are established and solid. The student is typically incapable of separating Method from Principle.
The student is approaching the end of the first phase when they are able to perform the fundamentals with repeatability. They are able to identify when principles and and rules are broken.
Section 2: The ability to perform the fundamentals in sequence continues to improve. More complicated maneuvers begin to smoothen out, the ability to communicate the fundamentals, whether as a teacher or as colleague partly defines this phase from the previous one.
The individual identifies when they and others break established rules, as well as they begin to consider different schools of the subject. A chief example of this being martial arts in the early days of the internet before MMA had changed the field.
The individual gains more confidence in their skillset as the see the successes of clean execution after practice. Their view of the subject becomes dogmatic: as they are yet incapable of distinguishing between a rule broken and a skillset from a different school used in conjunction with their own.
This phase typically ends after a precipitating event or series of events that break the paradigm of their dogma. Although confidence begins to drop, their skill continues to improve.
Section 3: As the subject begins to descend from their dogma, they began to consider exemptions to their established rules and principles. A renewed interest in fundamentals changes from improving performance and articulating the skillset, to separating between a heuristic and a principle.
Heuristics define a school, and rely on principles. Principles apply to all schools. What was once a rule becomes a heuristic, that, in this case, can be broken.
Articulation is steadily exchanged for comprehension: the ability to choose from multiple maneuvers and skillsets to solve a problem. The phase prioritizes the development of these skillsets as well as ancillary ones, and be able to discern when and how to use each of them. Dogma of rulesets is finally exchanged for mastery of skillsets and their application.
Phase 4: The subject continues to refine, polish, and execute maneuvers appropriate to the scenario. They refine micro-components of each movements, and tackle complex problems with some sense of order. The key feature is the ability to understand a rule/heuristic and when to break it, so that the objective can be accomplished.

080: Shame on You
Once again we are entering a week of Social and Political discourse, loaded with the events of the weekend. One part, a following up on the subject of gaslighting, another part deeper dive into why it's important to have a firm foundation for what we believe in, this episode of the REDACTED Culture Cast focuses on the proper response to the kinds of accusations that will be leveled at Gun Culture in the following days and weeks.
We've already addressed how Gun Culture is gaslit into considering our own conscience in the wake of tragedies and acts of violence against innocents. While we may feel the utility of having a good argument in response is to convince our accusers, perhaps it is more important that we are sure of what we believe, in order to discard false accusations.
The intent of these kinds of accusations is to make you feel guilty, regardless of any correlation to reality.
The Pre-Order for the Subdued shirts are live, and we're including a giveaway. Find out more in the coming days.

079: Decentralization is Inevitable & Brave New War by Robb
It is not enough that we hold on to our liberty with fingers stressed tight through dedication, while doubt troubles our minds to the values and virtues of our cause. It is not enough that we merely hold onto the means of our liberty, while casting aspersions on the reasons why we hold these truths to be self evident.
In is book " Brave New War," John Robb argues that, in some sense, decentralization is inevitable when it comes to the nation-state. Fragile, slow, and bureaucratic centralized authorities are too slow to face threats informed by open source warfare and decentralized movements.
Since the book was published, we've seen this play out in real time, with the "summer of love" and following changes in the socio-political landscape. But from our perspective, instead of learning, the powers centralized in letter-agencies have chosen, instead, to pursue more invasive forms of control in conjunction with increasing use of social pressure to achieve compliance.
But if Robb's assessment proves correct, they are losing, and the evidence is in the people.

078 Part 2: Vlad Saye of Terminal Armament on SDR Applications / Decentralization through Tech
Part 2 with Vlad Saye picks up where we left off on the topic of Software Defined Radio. This time we dive deeper into various pieces of equipment and their capabilities, as well as different use cases.
When it comes to decentralization, guns, and technology, we are beset with the question of not only what are the capabilities, but how they could be socially implemented, all built on the foundation of why this might be a goal worth pursuing, knowing fully well that every decision in one direction will come at the opportunity cost of others.

078 Part 1: Vlad Saye of Terminal Armament on Tech, Surveillance, and Privacy
In Part 1 of our conversation with Vlad Saye of Terminal Armament, the converstation begins with how he entered into American Gun Culture with a desire to bring something valuable to the table.
A tone begins in this first part, about how the tech milieu may have one set of means to securing their privacy and freedom, but are otherwise incapable of defending it, with Gun Culture often exhibiting the inverse: the physical means, but not the technological ones. Privacy or Freedom if you chose one or the other, but thankfully we are not forced to chose between the two.

077: Gaslighting Gun Control
The term Gaslighting has risen to prominence in the past few years, and before it completely fades into the mist of recently overused terms, we're going to address the use of it as a tactic to hijack the conscience of the accused.
One mission of REDACTED is to contribute to the cultural and intellectual foundation that informs our Right to Bear Arms. Politics, as it stands, exhausts the concerned, quickly burning out any optimism for morals to succeed in the face of various forms of corruption.
In this example, Gun Owners are typically gaslit with accusations that their choice to take up responsibility for their community is equivalent to justify holding them morally responsible for the actions of complete strangers.
Gun Culture has an abundance of the physical materials to defend themselves, so we chose to add to their intellectual concerns.

076: How To Build a Library
The REDACTED Culture Cast is dedicated to two principles: honest philosophy, and the Rights to Self Defense and Privacy.
Never before has it been easier to build a personal library, and in the same vein, the determining factor over what should or should not be admitted into your personal library hinges more on the ability to evaluate information, instead of simply one's access to it.
But with that change, how do we consider the action of building out a library? How do we go about choosing what topics, authors, or styles to focus on?
In this episode we cover a some of the factors to consider when building your personal library, including cataloging, note taking, and categorizing your shelves.

075: How & Why Insurgency Came to Be
Instead of merely documenting the rise of Insurgency across the world, in this episode we draw out both how and why insurgency came to become so prevalent in the world.
Two trajectories can be drawn from the end of the 19th Century, as the presence of unified and integrated belief systems declined, and war began industrializing. One intersection arrives in the form of insurgency, where war on a National scale is held back by the threat of mutually assured destruction, meanwhile, populations continue to feel less and less connected to their country, and a sense of meaning.

074 Part 2: Paigeosity // Women in Gun Culture, Monopolies on Violence
We left off just halfway through the conversation on Women in Gun Culture, and resume by addressing what might be the other extreme of the spectrum. While we addressed the intent and premises that we approached this talk in the first half, the second addresses what it looks like to "have a seat at the table."
But wait, there's more.
Having a monopoly on violence, in its base form, is antithetical to our human rights. Not only antithetical in the sense that, if it were the case, it would be wrong, but another layer deeper when we say that a human right is one that cannot be deleted, only infringed.

074 Part 1: Paigeosity on Multiculturalism and Women in the Gun Community
Before we get into even talking about Women in Gun Culture, we have to lay down the premises that frame the conversation. The word "representation" is so abused that it must be either cured or discarded.
Paige aka Paigeosity has found a place within Gun Culture, and brings the problems with multiculturalism to the conversation. Defining terms, we start by breaking down presumptive arguments that attempt to inject truth statements in the form of an assumption, without directly signaling the intent. In some cases, the argument is the distraction, and in part one, we start by unravelling what one looks like.
So when it comes to the conversation about Women in Gun Culture, what do we do? From Gun Bunnies to Annie Oakleys, it turns out that the conflict isn't coming from within, but without.
Stick around for Part 2.

073: Jake Knight of GRIDBASE on Decentralized Tech / Digital Multitools
A common theme repeated when regarding the advancement of technology arrives in the phrase from Jurassic Park: "Our scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should." Yet outside of the metaphorical Silicon Valley, with the rise of AI, and the advancement of technology as a tool for surveillance, the conversation is evolving to reconsider the Rights of the Individual. Whether bitcoin could function as the antidote to centralized banking, or if encrypted communications are a threat to the nation state, part of considering technology is what is could do, and another is what it should do. Stagnancy is not an option.
Surveillance, Counter Surveillance, Communications, and Enhancing the capabilities of cooperative technology, the Base Station by GridBase provides many of the benefits of computing technology for OffGrid and Decentralized applications.

071: The Paradigm Shift in Gun Culture
Three elements provide the context for today's Topic: holding ourselves accountable in an environment that seeks to take advantage of it, the projection of conflicting categories of people, and the paradigm shift apparent in Gun Culture.
Dr. Rigney has left his position as the President of Bethlehem Seminary, with articles stating that it's partly because of his affinity or support for Christian Nationalism. This comes at a time when terms of this sort are often defined by the people least qualified to do so.
We see this happen in debates around Guns in the United States.
At the same time categories are being declared in conflict with one another, and in this case, it's by supporters of the aggressor.
Reading "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" by Thomas Kuhn identifies a way of describing the shift in Gun Culture, and while many are trying to figure out what that means, it would suggest we are in the time between paradigms, one of searching.
So we posit what a few of the examples and core principles should emerge in the new one.

As much as the topic of Radios typically focuses on two subjects: Military/Citizen Application, and the strengths/weaknesses of individual systems, this conversation on radio-based centers on something made relevant by recent events. Alex, of Mojave Repeater answers the question of what he would be looking for as far as radio capability and proficiency in an active shooter response scenario.
When last we spoke with Alex in episode 013, we talked about the differences between digital and analogue radios, a subject that comes up frequently in Gun Culture. This follow on asks questions closer to home in light of the violence in Nashville.

068: Iain Harrison Returns: Ukraine, Global Strategy, and War
The subject of Ukraine cannot be separated from politics. We can come to this conclusion either from and ontological angle: Clausewitz "War is politics by another mean," or by the account that in America, any conversation on the war in Ukraine must first wade through a political prelude before any real conversation can occur.
Iain Harrison returns to the REDACTED Culture Cast to bring his perspective on the War in Ukraine to the table. While we are often aware of the tribalism seen in others, this conversation functions as a healthy opportunity to reconsider our premises, and look at the Ukrainian War differently.
Plenty of lessons have been learned from this most recent conflict, and we look at how those apply to the individual.

The art of Gypsy Walters can be seen across Gun Culture. From shirts, stickers, and patches, to tattoos, and beyond. It shows that Gun Culture isn't purely utilitarian. While we often justify our purchases and pursuits for their utility, whereas our true motivation might be located somewhere else.
There was a time when tattoos were an identifier of danger, but with a changing of the guard, tattoos became commonplace in the last 15 years. While this was going on, Gun Culture was shifting towards broader involvement.
For Gypsy Walters, it was always his goal to make a living off his Art.
So we address what that means for him, and take a look forward to what comes next.

Better Late than Never. This episode had to be written before it could be presented, particularly due to the nature of the material.
You have heard that Governments have a Monopoly on Violence. We take a look at that premise, and the application of our conclusion to how we look at violence.
Thesis: the Concept, or Axiom that men are created equal, or more specifically, on level playing field of metaphysical value, is not reflected in either nature or most of history, and must be grounded in theological truth.

What is the difference between surreptitious and covert, and what does it have to do with Gun Culture? One thing we know about this 'community' of sorts, is that it'll never be satisfied when it comes to skillsets. If you can learn to shoot, you can learn to pick a lock, run a radio, and so forth.
What begins with picking locks, leads to questions of privacy, digital penetration testing, and red teaming, as skillsets, and as thought experiments.

063: Intel as Entertainment, News as Information
Most of us have grown up with a healthy distrust for "the News," but are at risk for substituting it for something inherently more valuable, without utilizing it as such.
Field: Epistemology.
Terms: Intel, Information, News, Entertainment.
While we are aware that the News primarily operates as a form of entertainment, Intel isn't necessarily used as useful information. By remedying this division, we are made better thinkers, actors, and Citizens.
The Field of Epistemology can often come across as rude, especially when debating a cynic with a bent for dismissal. But despite it's timeless nature, it will be the antidote of Fifth Generation Warfare, if not a demarcation of those who survive it on top.
If you can defeat an enemy without firing a shot, by either demoralizing him, or disrupting his ability to evaluate information, you have a distinct advantage over them, as you will be able to assess the playing field, while they are rendered incapable of understanding it.

The relationship between Gun Culture and video games is messy, but isn't ending any time soon. We know they're not the same thing, that skill in one does not translate to skill in another. Meanwhile, fiction imitates life as the most successful gun culture adjacent games have a present a modicum of "realism." Like in a healthy relationship, communication and consideration is needed.
Justin, aka Controlled Pairs brings consideration to the table when it comes to Video Games and how Virtual Reality might serve as an asset to professionals and citizens alike.

Opening: Matthew 24:6-8.
You will hear of Wars and Rumors of Wars. The apocalypse doesn't come without it's allure. At risk of chasing the current zeitgeist, this solo production of the REDACTED Culture Cast approaches the topic of Civil War with a series of questions that lead to warnings. The topic of Civil War continues to be attractive in media, this production included, partly because of the urgency it brings, and also through the subjects reflection of the state of nations.
This subject is further muddied by the rising interest in 5th Generation Warfare, another subject of mystery and intrigue. If true, who are the actors? If this is war, then what?
