Making Candied Cat's Tongue- MUSHROOM CANDY!!
In this video I make Cat's Tongue, also known as Pseudohydnum gelatinosum, into yummy jelly-like candies. Mushroom candy might not sound that great but it can be!! If you are into trying different things then you might wanna try this recipe.
ITs very simple and it starts with wild foraged mushrooms. These aren't your typical mushrooms though. The "Cats Tongue," is a type of saprobic mushroom that grows on dead conifer logs and branches here in the PNW and other places in the world. Its translucent look, strange jelly-like texture, and fuzzy little teeth on the underside make this one pretty hard to mistake when found in the wild. A bit of a winter loving mushroom, this on prefers the colder months, so at the time of this upload (January) the forests are dripping with these natural gummy candies. You could eat them straight off the log if you wish, as this is one of the few mushrooms that's ok to do with, (although eating a bunch of them raw could cause some stomach upset).
I make a super simple syrup with food dye, soak the mushrooms overnight, roll in sugar and dry. They're simply delicious.
Would it be easier to buy a bag of Swedish Fish at the store or some gummy worms? yes- undoubtedly- but it wouldn't be nearly as fun or as cool as doing this!

Identifying WILD MUSHROOMS growing in January - 2023
In this video Aaron Hilliard, Mycologist, VP of a mycological society, and creator of Mushroom Wonderland takes us on a walk in the forest to see what kind of wild and amazing mushrooms the new year has brought us.
Despite it being a pretty lame autumn for mushies, with a pretty hard winter pounding in mid December, the fungi is still finding a way to grow. Let Aaron show you in stunning 4k some of the mushroom you may encounter in the forest. Mushroom's do have a tendency of being a bit regional, and that is not to say these mushrooms wont be growing near you, but they might not be. This video was shot in the Puget Sound basin, right across the water from Seattle Washington, right at about sea level.
This was shot owner the course of about a week, so if you notice inconsistencies in Aarons attire, then that would explain it.
We first encounter a handsome saprobic mushroom that is growing among leaf duff known as the "Ambiguous Stropharia," or Stropharia ambigua. A fairly large and attractive mushroom with a yellowish cap that often has dangling appendages hanging from the margin.
The next is a look-alike of a medicinal mushroom known the world over- but what we look at it the "False Turkey Tail," or Stereum hirsutum.
Then we come across an impressive flush of Trametes gibbosa, or the "Lumpy Bracket." This one is actually closely related to the Turkey Tail, but not known for its medicinal properties.
We next encounter some Xylaria hypoxylon, a strange little log loving mushroom that puts off amazing puffs of spores when agitated.
We get to see some of the "Rosy Oysterlings," Scytinotus longinquus, a little oyster looking mushroom that is super common this time of year growing on downed logs. Next to it is a stump totally covered in mycelium of the "Fairy Parachutes," Marasmiellus candidus, a delicate yet impressive flush of fungi.
Then we see an amazing conifer log covered in Pycnoporellus fulgens, Dacrymyces chrysospermus, and Fomitopsis mounceae. This is an episode you don't want to miss!!

Amazing Mushrooms in a Microscope, with Alan Rockefeller
In this video I had the chance to hang with world famous mycologist Alan Rockefeller in a cozy little cabin to look at mushrooms under a microscope. Alan is well known for his studies in mushrooms, his work with magic mushrooms, his mind blowing photos of mushrooms, and all everything mushrooms. And, coincidentally here on Mushroom Wonderland, we talk all about mushrooms.
If you're a mycophile (someone whos obsessed with mushroom's), or have any interest whatsoever in mushrooms, then this is a good video to sit back and see a real master at work.
This was filmed at the 2022 Costal Fungi Symposium near Oysterville, WA in October of 2022.
We look at a beautiful blue crust fungi called Terana coreulea, a spider that was parasitized by a fungi called Gibbolula, and we look briefly at a Lobster mushroom.

The Psychedelic Frontier - Oregon Legal Magic Mushrooms: Part 1
Oregon is on the forefront of psychedelic medicine, and as of the 2nd of January of this year (2023) there will be licenses available to people wanting to start farming, testing, facilitating, and administering magic mushrooms to people in a legal and regulated way. After 2 years of preparation, the measure is ready to be unrolled and its an exciting advancement in medicine and its possibilities to help people overcome trauma and addiction issues as well as other ailments that psychedelic medicine is believed to help.
Voters in Oregon decided in 2020 to pass measure 109, allowing the legal use of the magical mushrooms, for the first time in American history and in this video we take a close look at what this measure could mean, how this "medicine" could be beneficial, certain risks, legality, scientific explanations, and how these mushrooms are grown and distributed.
Keeping in mind this is a drug that is still recognized by the federal government as a schedule 1 drug. This conflict of laws has been an issue with the legalization of Cannabis, but with less protections for people in the mushroom world.
I got the chance to interview Angela Allbee, manager for the Oregon psilocybin council, a section of the Oregon Health Authority, and she helps to explain how this measure will work and some of the rules surrounding it. There are also several highly regarded people in the mushroom world interviewed and featured in this video, like Larry Evans - "The Mushroom Man," Alan Rockefeller- an expert on magic mushrooms, Reishi Strauss - a psychedelic guide and herbal healer, and Jordan Weiss- "a mycology educator."
This is this first in a series of videos about the measure and the hope is to help spread information and education about the mysterious magical mushroom and help destigmatize them and to maybe help people who could use this 'medicine' to find it more approachable.

Did the story of Santa come from a Magic Mushroom? The story of Amanita Christmas
In this Christmas special Mushroom Wonderland takes a look at ancient folklore and modern day Christmas traditions, as well as mushrooms, Amanita muscaria to be exact, to see if the story of Christmas as we know it today was influenced by the mysterious and magical mushroom.
Undoubtedly the most iconic and famous mushroom around the globe, the red and white speckled Amanita, has made its way into modern culture in so many different ways. From fairy tales to video games, if you ask anyone to quickly draw a mushroom, this is the one they'll be most likely to draw. This mushroom holds certain effects if ingested and this was no mystery to reindeer herders in the far north reaches of Siberia and Finnish Lapland. It is said that the story of old Saint Nick, the flying reindeer, and many other parts of the Christmas tradition were influenced by, well, people under the influence of this mushroom. This information is just pieced together from a hundred different sources I have read and heard over the years and is solely my interpretation, so if you're offended or find that this doesn't make sense, I am not really interested in a debate, this is all in good fun and very little should be taken as a fact.
Amanita muscaria has several different "varieties" or sub-species around the globe and some people think that the North American version should be called Amanita chrysoblema and the muscaria version is purely the European variety. Either way, to simplify, I just call them all Amanita muscaria.
This is for ENTERTAINMENT purposes only and should not be used as any kind of identification key or guide. We are not promoting the use of this mushroom, it is reported as Toxic and I treat it as such.
This mushroom is not illegal, and it is said that is because the effects can be so unpleasant that few people will try them twice. Take that, as well as everything else in this video with a grain of salt.
Merry Christmas and Mush-Love to you all!

The Costal Fungi Symposium 2022 - Documentary of a fungi festival
Ever been to a fungi festival? Seems like a strange thing to the laymen person, but to the fungiphile or mycophile it is one of the greatest weekends of the year. I decided to load up my Tahoe and head to the Long Beach Peninsula of Washington state to join in the festivities with some of the greatest mycologists around for a weekend of fungi, food, and friends. Some of the people I already knew, many I just met, and I had an awesome time.
The event was organized by "Friends and Fungi," a faction of mushroom lovers whos interest is getting together like minded myconauts for an amazing weekend called the Costal Fungi Symposium.
There was no way that I could have possibly captured everything that went on that weekend, so this is just kind of my view on the CFS and I hope you enjoy it.
Mush Love everyone!

Learning Wild Mushrooms in December- with a short microscopy tutorial
In this video Aaron Hilliard, mycologist- creator- VP of the mycological society- takes us on a journey into Mushroom Wonderland to discover what wild mushrooms might be growing in a forest near you in December. This video was made in the great Pacific Northwest but this information could also be relevant in your neck of the woods if you live elsewhere. Mushrooms love to grow wherever it is moist and at the right temperatures, and many of these species grow all over the world, just in slightly different habitats or with different tree hosts.
This video could be a great resource for beginner foragers as well as people who have done a little research in the world of mycology but want to go deeper.
At the end there is a short microscopy tutorial where Aaron takes a Pluteus and shows how to do a spore print and to dehydrate and take a gill section and mount it on a microscope slide, and then look at it under the scope. Very interesting if you've never seen spores or the amazing antler-like structures on the "deer mushroom.'
Several products were shown in the video and below this are the links to easily buy these things for yourself, and buying through these links also helps to support Mushroom Wonderland.

Alan Rockefeller Keynote Mushroom Presentation at 2022 Coastal Fungi Symposium
In this video Alan Rockefeller blows away the crowd at the 2022 'Friends and Fungi' Costal Fungi Symposium near Long Beach WA.
One hundred plus mycophiles converged on a small, wooded piece of land on the Washington coast in October to learn and share and hang out with other adoring mushroom fanatics. Lots of amazing mycologists showed up for the weekend and shared stories and knowledge. The Saturday keynote speaker that weekend was Alan Rockefeller, a self taught mycologist from the Oakland CA area. The child of two science teachers, Alan has excelled in the field of mycology for the past 20 years. He has worked for therapeutics companies, talked all over the world, travels frequently to Mexico, and has his name published all over mycological literature.
Immediately prior to this talk he gave a shorter, separate talk titled Psilocybin Mushrooms of North America which is also featured on Mushroom Wonderland. Just search for it in the videos, and I will put an end title after this video so you can just click on that.
Due to the length of his talk that night we decided to split it into two different talks. Here is part two, covering the most amazing mushrooms he photographed recently. Mushroom Wonderland would like to give a huge shout out to Alan Rockefeller and the staff at the Costal Fungi Symposium for this talk! Glad to bring it to you here, all you have to do is hit that subscribe button and give it a thumbs up!!
