Where You Need To Be In Order To Give Your Dog Freedom
“Just feeling confident that we have the control over the dog if we need it, that’s really the important thing.”
Great follow up session with Luka and his owner, chatting about how the training has given Luka amazing opportunities for improvement with breaking commands and focus. These are the things that we work towards, that matter for when we are able to give our dogs freedom!

Just because I wouldn’t own that breed doesn’t mean I don’t like them
This week the girls take over the podcast to talk about dog breeds they'd never own, the next breeds they'd be interested in getting and WHY. Breed traits and standards are not the end all be all, are important to consider when finding the newest addition to your family. And just because we wouldn’t own a specific breed, doesn’t mean we don’t love and respect those breeds as clients!

You can’t half ass enforce rules with dogs
On this week’s podcast, David and Josh tackle a number of topics and listener questions. Like in this clip for instance, the importance of enforcing rules and boundaries with your dog. If you’re only enforcing things with your dog half of the time, you can cause the behavior to intensify and actually become worse.

Follow Through Is So Important
Breaking habits is difficult but when it comes to teaching our dogs, we need to make sure we’re clear on what is expected. When your dog breaks a command, you have to follow through with a correction AND your command again or your dog is going to think they can get up whenever they’d like, continuing that pattern. Follow through is so important in the teaching stages —> long term.

Communicating With & Motivating Owners
Recently David was asked to join Jeff Gellman on his Wake The F*ck Up Podcast to discuss all things training and business. Jeff asked a lot of great questions like how the David The Dog Trainer Podcast ties into the Miracle K9 Training Business, if David has seen an increase in difficult dogs in recent years, and communicating with and motivating owners.

Room For Error Between Big and Small Dogs Is So Little
Room for error between big and small dogs is so little.
Lady came to us with lots of energy, very playful pup. But with her new friend Binx, who as you can see is very small, she needed to learn that some things she was doing out of excitement was simply not safe.
Michelle explains that any bursts of energy where Lady would come at Binx, had to be corrected for, as well as any nuisance behaviors that could cause harm for Binx’s small chihuahua body. After awhile of being together in this supervised social, Lady was able to take in boundaries that Binx had set as well as the corrections that were given into affect as she was less amped and just curious.
Obviously with more time, these two will coexist even better since this was only one lesson together but since then, it’s awesome to know they are on the right track. Full video available on our YouTube.

Putting Your Dog Away Around Guests Because You Can’t Control Them
It’s more than okay to put your dog away while guests are over but are you doing this because you can’t control them?
Having good management while people come over is so important especially when you don’t want to set your dog up for failure in these scenarios. As we work with Louie and his owner, we find out a lot about what kind of dog he is and what we are going to do to help his owner be able to allow Louie to hold commands while guests are over instead of putting him away.
Full episode on our YouTube now in DogVlog 149. We will be sharing a lot more videos of Louie’s journey soon, don’t miss out on his transformation!

Watch Your Dogs While They Eat
You may not think about it, but watching your dogs eat should be apart of your daily routines with them. Not only will it prevent fights or guarding, but you being there can signal to your dogs that if anything happens, you’re there to handle any issues that could arise.

Preventing Fighting When Dogs Go After The Same Toy
Your dogs can be around resources together BUT you should have some rules with what is allowed when throwing toys such as a ball, especially around ball driven dogs.
You’ll notice, when throwing anything while playing catch, the multiple dogs will go after it of course, but sometimes it can result in a fight. This can be easily resolved with letting the dog that doesn’t get to it first that they cannot try to go grab it. It’s a bummer when a dog antagonizes during playtime, but that’s because you’ve been allowing it. Implement these methods and you should have a healthy and happy playtime with your dogs! 🎾

Offer More Follow Up Support
It’s common to see people in any kind of profession letting people down who come to them for their services and help but it doesn’t make it right.
We had a call with a dog owner who was unfortunately in a very, very sad situation and reached out to discuss behavioral euthanasia. During that call, it became known that the dog owner wasn’t given enough follow up support to continue with the training, which led to her being extremely let down, not really knowing where to turn. Even her vet wasn’t willing to discuss anything with her…
If you think you are offering enough follow up support, you need to offer more. Be there for your clients and continue to educate, guide, truly support them. These things aren’t easy but we need to be better.

Lowering Your Dogs Arousal Around Guests
Does your dog get extremely stoked when you have guests over and sometimes it’s a game of not knowing if they’ll knock your guests over? You’re not having your dog hold their bed stays or stationary command long enough.
Allow your dog to hold that command for 10-15 minutes until their arousal levels go down. And if your guests aren’t amping them up when they’re released, your dog will realize oh okay… nobody is getting amped so why should I!

Learning Stages Of A Recall
The beginning stages of learning a recall have many different elements but it’s important to know that it’s all about repetition. Your dog will start picking up on the ques, therefore they may not make it that far away from you but that’s great. It’s more about the dog hearing it and doing it rather than calling from longer distances with distractions!
