Balanced training gets a bad rep, but our trainers sit down to talk about the absolutely absurd theories and lies about it on this week’s staff podcast episode. Here, Bridget explains the biased lens many see balanced training through, and addresses the myth of “training fallout”.

Confidence From Repetition
Consistency.
When working sessions with your dog, you have to make sure you’re ending on success. People make the mistake while working their dogs through something they struggle with by either ending after one good rep or moving onto something else.
You’ll know when it’s right to end that session when your dog has more clarity than when they did from the beginning and they gain confidence in doing what you’re asking of them.

Breed traits aren’t an excuse for your dog’s bad behavior
This week the girls take over the podcast to talk about dog breeds they'd never own, the next breeds they'd be interested in getting and WHY. Breed traits and standards are not the end all be all, are important to consider when finding the newest addition to your family. Here, Bridget discusses how breed standards don’t have to determine how your dog will behave, and they don’t have to limit your dog either!

Don’t Correct Before A Mistake Is Made
When working with reactive dogs or even dogs that break commands while guests are entering your home from excitement, make sure you’re not correcting before they make the mistake. Your communication in these drills and real life scenarios is the foundation of working through it to get successful so wait until the actual mistake is made.

Progress On Impulse Control
When working on your dogs impulse control, the little things matter a ton. During this session, we had given a criteria of when the dog goes after a piece of food that drops from the counters, it’s not a freeby and the dog needs to understand just that. Because you’re working these drills or you’re on top of the training in these situations, the probability of anything bad happening with guarding or impulsiveness is so low. #dogtraining #impulsecontrol

“I want my dog to have the same hobbies as me”
This week the girls take over the podcast to talk about dog breeds they'd never own, the next breeds they'd be interested in getting and WHY. Breed traits and standards are not the end all be all, are important to consider when finding the newest addition to your family. Especially when it comes to things like temperament, activity level, grooming maintenance, and general social levels with other dogs or people. When integrating a new dog into your family, you want the new potential pet to fit well into your lifestyle and at some level, share your hobbies as well! You can enjoy a dog breed and they still may not be the right fit for your home, and that’s OKAY!

Discovering Yourself When You No Longer Seek Help In Others
We’re all guilty of being skeptical in putting trust into others when it comes to our projects, businesses or anything that means a lot to us. For David, he struggled a bit with that but eventually realized when it was time to figure things out on his own as well as allowing his trainers the full freedom of letting go of that safety net.
You find out so much about yourself as a person and your craft when you do these things on your own.

Extreme Reactivity One Week Progress
Louie has training behind his back but he was still struggling a bit with having explosive outbursts when he would pass dogs. From the beginning clip to the end clips, you can see the massive strides Louie has taken in order to not only help himself with being able to go on walks, but to help his owner have confidence when taking him. Now Louie is able to pass dogs who are barking, coming at him through fences, running or walking by.
From our video earlier, his owner and David discussed implementing rewards into his training. As you can see, we added treats, not as a bribe but because we got Louie past the hurdle of being able to shift his attention onto the handler rather than expoding at the barking dogs passing by.
In two sessions, we learned a lot about him and his reactivity. Although we have some ways to go, his progress only goes up from here. Go Louie!

It shouldn’t be trendy to hate dog breeds
This week the girls take over the podcast to talk about dog breeds they'd never own, the next breeds they'd be interested in getting and WHY. Breed traits and standards are not the end all be all, are important to consider when finding the newest addition to your family. However, we want to do away with the trend of hating certain dog breeds like doodles. Hating doodles is just as bad as hating chihuahuas or pitbull. And while it’s important to critique breeding practices and ethics surrounding owning certain breeds, whether they be mixes, working breeds, or power breeds. At the end of the day, people get dogs because they want to love them and care for them. Every dog, regardless of breeding, deserves the chance at a joy filled life with their owners.

Adding Rewards Into Your Training
Making sure you’re not using rewards as a bribe is so important when adding them into your training routines. We are big on using rewards in our training but only when expediting the positive associate with doing the right thing in situations that previously were not so positive to the dogs.
Stop by later to see us post how we used rewards with Louie who has worked on his extreme reactivity with us the last few weeks, because his progress has been GREAT.

Push Back and Real Life Situations
When we met Louie, his reactivity was so intense that his owner struggled getting him back into commands in the real world, which is scary in public! Role playing these situations so your dog is prepared for the real life scenarios without battling the push back from the ecollar is so important. Especially in Louie’s case.

My Dog Is Terrible In The Crate
This may come as a shock to many but there are options to crate training and sometimes it may come down to not crating them at all. Although we are big proponents of crating your dog, you can take precautions to eventually fade them into freedom if they are absolutely terrible in it. Some dogs just do better outside of the crate, some need time so we recommend not giving up if you’re almost there and be patient with your dog!
