When your dog makes a mistake, the most important part is identifying the mistake before doing anything else. Your remote does not need to be on you and we don’t need to be rushing! Clear communication with your dog will build that solid relationship and structure before an ecollar correction will. So while you’re training, remember these things.

Those things that we want to correct for, but we really can’t because they aren’t clear, can be very annoying. So much so to the point that it can overshadow all the amazing work and progress we’ve made with our dog. If you’re struggling with this mindset you’ve got to ask yourself, are those annoying behaviors like pacing, sniffing, or spinning dangerous to our dog or anyone else? Are they worth it clouding all of the positive changes you’ve made? Give yourself and your dog the credit you both deserve by focusing on the positive, and understand that there are just some things that our dogs do which we cannot change, and that’s okay! When you have no control over the resources around you and you’re constantly letting your dog take them from you, your dog is going to develop worse and worse behaviors surrounding resources. It’s important that you learn how to resource guard things from your dog. What we mean by that is if you’re enjoying a snack on your couch, and your dog attempts to take that snack from you, you have to tell them no and correct them. Don’t let them take it away from you, or they will continue to keep trying to do it. Intensifying your “no” marker isn’t going to stop the behavior. It’s important that no matter how you’re saying your marker, you’re always following up with your correction. THAT is what’s going to condition stopping behaviors, not your tone.

There are bound to be plenty of things your dog will do that will bother you. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should correct for all of those things. Some of those behaviors, while annoying as they can be, aren’t clear enough to your dog to correct for. The way we keep training and corrects fair to our dogs is knowing that they understand exactly what they are being corrected for. The correct can be attached to a specific behavior or lack thereof. If we correct for behaviors like sniffing, or spinning, or pacing (under the assumption that they aren’t breaking another command in order to perform the behavior), we can actually do harm to our dog’s training and our relationship with them. Alot of people look at rehabilitating dogs with dog aggression issues as it’s got to be this big, dramatic session you’re going to watch. Don’t get us wrong, it can be but the large part of this that we see is putting them in a healthy environment to start so we can allow them to communicate and we will step in whenever we feel is too far.

There are a lot of responsibilities that come with owning power breeds like German Shepherds, Rottweilers, or pitbulls. However, it’s not YOUR sole responsibility as an owner of one of these types of dogs to make a good name for them. Your dog doesn’t have to be the representative of all of these dogs. Your only responsibility is to train the dog in front of you, handle them safely, and work towards their success! Taking on all that responsibility is too much pressure for yourself and your dog. By simply being dedicated to the training of your dog, you will make a good name for YOUR DOG, and that is the most important thing! Training your small dog still matters. It’s so easy to leave out small dogs untrained because we can simply pick them up and they don’t pose much of a threat to anything. However, an untrained small dog could be at risk of another dog injuring them. If your small dog is constantly reactive at every dog goes by or has free reign to approach any dog, you have no idea how the other dog in the equation is trained or what their behavior is like. When we constantly baby our small dogs and treat them like permanent puppies, we are doing them a bit of a disservice. You’ve got to stop infantilizing your small dog, because they are still a grown dog who you can communicate and set boundaries with. Boundaries that could one day save their life! In the house, they’re emboldened through getting away with fearful behaviors in an environment that they’re comfortable in to keep scary threats away and owners may start to misconstrue those behaviors as confidence. We want to be mindful of who is soliciting the attention when it comes to us and our dogs. Although it may be cute when our dogs are pawing and climbing on us for affection, it can get to a point where it’s unfortunately not cute anymore and just annoying. These things can lead to unwanted behaviors so just be mindful!

When it comes to behavioral issues with dogs, there can be multiple factors that play into a larger issue. And for owners, it can be difficult to connect those dots. As trainers it’s our job to help clients understand the ripple effect some behaviors have with others, and how letting our dog get away with some can exacerbate others. As a trainer, a big part of your job is critiquing clients and the way that they interact with or lead their dogs. This can be very difficult, so, it’s imperative that the critiques you’re giving are set up delivered in such a way that they are entirely constructive to the owner and can help them feel more confident. If you focus on building that confidence early on in the program as well, your clients will see that as they continue, any advice or knowledge you’re giving is to make their relationship with their dog BETTER.
