The Van Andel Institute has found a new way of treating colorectal cancer by combining two already approved FDA drugs. A doctor at the institute said she and her team of experts saw a decrease in tumor growth by combining the drugs.

Troy Police say an elderly woman was scammed out of over 660-thousand dollars
Investigators say the scammer posed as an attorney with the Federal Trade Commission and told the victim she won a Publisher's Clearing House contest. The woman finally told a friend about it who convinced the woman to call the police. Investigators say it is not likely the scammer will be caught and remind residents to be cautious of any stranger asking for money.

Gas prices are up slightly from last week in the state.
Triple-A Michigan says the average is a nickel higher at three-dollars-62-cents, up 31-cents in the last month and nine-cents more than last year. A 15-gallon fill up costs 54-dollars on average. The lowest price is in Marquette at three-52 and the highest is in Jackson at three-66.

Dana Nessel is blasting DTE Energy for requesting a rate hike of over eight-dollars a month.
Nessel says it's an "absurd" increase less than four months after the Michigan Public Service Commission approved their last rate hike. The MPSC is being asked by DTE to approve the rate hike of more than 450-million-dollars effective January 28, 2025.

A park in Ottawa County will soon be closing for restorations
Ottawa Sands will be closed to the public starting April 1st. Construction will be done on parking lots, paved paths, restrooms, as well as the ongoing work at the Explorers Camp. Also, work will be done to enhance and restore 238 acres of the park. The park is expected to reopen later in the summer.

There's finally a winner in the Mega Millions lottery.
A winning ticket sold in New Jersey matched all six numbers in Tuesday night's drawing worth over one-point-one billion dollars. One ticket sold in Michigan matched five numbers but not the Mega Ball, and is good for a million dollars. Lottery players are now turning their attention to the Powerball jackpot, which will be worth an estimated 865-million dollars in Wednesday night's drawing.

Over 260 residents and physicians at the Western Michigan University
AFT Michigan says 93-percent of the vote was in favor and they have certified the union, which will be known as the Resident & Fellow Alliance, or RFA. The interim dean of the medical school says they are aware of the vote and says it needs to be certified by the national labor relations board. Resident physician Jamil Khondker says the union "will give us a voice in the workplace, the ability to negotiate for fair contracts and working conditions, and protection from exploitation."

The City of Grand Haven is looking to redevelop the historic Chinook Pier.
Those who support the redevelopment of the pier say it will benefit local residents and businesses as well as the millions of tourists who visit the area each year. The city is accepting proposals through mid-April and if approved, the redevelopment would be done over the next two-years.

The United Auto Workers Union says workers at the Volkswagen factory
The National Labor Relations Board announced Monday a vote will be held at the plant April 17th to the 19th. Over four-thousand workers filed paperwork seeking an election last month. The UAW announced last fall it will begin efforts at non union auto plants owned by Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Telsa. The effort is primarily focused on plants in southern states and covers around 150-thousand workers.

Free gun safes are being offered to pistol owners in Kalamazoo
Several hundred safes are available, as are free rifle locks. The pistol safes are available in three ways. Those are from certified CPL instructors under the Michigan Constitution on Law Enforcement Standards during training courses; by picking up vouchers at MSP's Paw Paw Post from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and through vouchers at gun stores with the purchase of new pistols.

College hockey fans of Western Michigan, Michigan State, and the University of Michigan
The three schools are playing in the NCAA tournament regional in suburban St. Louis, Missouri at an arena with just 25-hundred permanent seats and three-thousand-148 capacity with standing room only tickets. Attendance at the regional games since 2018 has averaged between seven-thousand and 13-thousand. The arena is the practice facility for the NHL's St. Louis Blues.

Some of the experiences include an immersive gorilla experience, an updated petting coral for young visitors, and new goats from San Clemente Island. The automaker says the cuts will affect engineering, technology and software division employees. The automaker says the cuts are to help them maintain a competitive advantage amid the electric vehicle transition. The layoffs account for two percent of workers in the United States.

General Motors is ending a relationship with two data brokers after a customer filed
A Florida resident filed a lawsuit earlier this month alleging General Motors and OnStar violated privacy and consumer protection laws by sharing his speeding, braking and acceleration with LexisNexis, who then shared it with insurers. GM released a statement saying the company previously shared limited driver data through an optional program however as of March 20th, they are no longer sharing data with LexisNexis or Verisk.

FEMA says two Disaster Recovery Centers will be open starting today
The recovery centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They are set up to help people who were impacted by severe weather that hit the southern part of the Lower Peninsula last August. FEMA says the deadline to apply for federal disaster assistance is April 8.

Josh Chapman will start the job May 1 and was selected after a nationwide search. He is currently the president and CEO of the Blue Water Area YMCA in Port Huron and was previously the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Cooke County in Texas.

The city of Holland will break ground April 23rd on Window on the Waterfront's Ice Park
Mayor Nathan Bocks says he is excited about the opportunity to provide "something that's going to be a fixture in this country for generations to come." The rink will be refrigerated and will have ice from November through March. Bocks says the park will be open year-round but it won't be ready for next winter.
