Feeding stingray at the San Antonio Aquarium
Took my son to the San Antonio aquarium and he was able to hand feed sharks and rays there. They came up to his hand and sucked the fish out. He had a great time! I recommend taking your children there if you haven’t already.

Early Spring, Creek Fishing! - Beautiful place! - McFly Angler Episode 46
Before I describe the trip to you, I want to give you a link to where you can find this beard balm. https://fbit.co/7jwa
Its good stuff, and your purchase helps me keep getting more sponsors to help me keep this channel going. Thanks! And keep growing that beard thick and strong guys! Us bearded men need to stick together!
So lets now talk about the trip!
My buddy Jeff and I were a little bored of fishing the same old thing. It seems like all we have been able to fish are the Animas and the San Juan river. I mean, through winter, thats about all we have here. However, spring is here, and we figured we would explore.
Now we knew its still a bit early for fish to be coming up to the small creeks, I mean just 2 weeks earlier there was ice on the banks. However, we wanted to try it, and do some exploring!
It was a long hike to the public access of the creek though. In fact, it was 3.5 miles there, and 3.5 miles back. We also walked about 1.5 past the public access. So I think in total we went a whopping 5 miles each way, thats a total of 10 miles in one day. Not crazy far, but I have to admit I was tired. It felt good though to get out and exercise though.
So as promised, I will list what gear I was using.

Animas in March - Fishing in the town of Durango - McFly Angler Episode 45
Finally I am back fishing! After a months recovery from melanoma surgery, I am very happy to be back on the water!
The animas is a free flowing river, and that means that the water flow fluctuates through the year depending on snow melt and the amount of rain. So during the end of winter, we tend to get a very low flowing river. The water doesn't flow much, and its hard to find deep holes. Luckily, through out the town of Durango, and even into the Ute (Native American) land, there are some deep spots that you can find fish holding. The fish are sluggish though during this time of year, so fishing a streamer is not the most recommended approach. Nymphing small baetis, caddis and midge patterns though works wonders though, and I was able to hook a few fish.
So I am a bit rusty, and still sore from my surgery and not fishing for a while. So I lost quite a few fish during this trip. I was able to hook 3, but lost 2 of them. So I only netted one fish. Thats ok though, as It was great just being back on the river. The fish I did bring in though wasnt huge, but a very beautiful brown with lots of spots. Just gorgeous fish on the Animas.
So as promised I would list the gear I used on this trip including that sling bag, my flies, and my fly boxes.

Unexpected catch! - Vallecito Lake in early Spring - McFly Angler episode 44
Well lake fishing from the shore is never easy, but it can surprise you! Its always better to have a boat or canoe but, there are good fish to be had when fly fishing from the shore. I fished all day, and dealt with a few pike biting off some of my flies. But finally towards the end of the day I hooked into a good trout. It was only one fish, but the fight was good enough to make it a great day out on the water!
Many people ask me what gear I use on my trips, so here is a breakdown on what rods, reels, and line I was using.
Setup 1:
Sage Method 9' 6wt Rod - https://amzn.to/2r6vVlR
Piscifun Platte 5/6 - https://amzn.to/2HZOaE7
Rio outbound short intermediate sink tip - https://amzn.to/2HDdk8d
Setup 2:
Piscifun rod 9' 5wt (not a model for sale yet)
Piscifun sword 2 reel 5/6 - https://amzn.to/2Fniljn
Rio In-Touch Perception WF5F - https://amzn.to/2JulGPZ
Also many of you have asked about that fly I was using to hook up to that trout with. Its called the double bunny, and its a good one for sure. Here is a video I did on how to tie it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YrMCqacelI

Eleven Mile Canyon - Fishing in the SNOW! - McFly Angler Episode 43
This had to be one of the prettiest places I have been to in a long time, if not ever. What a beautiful little canyon, and so close to a major metropolis city. Only an hour from Colorado Springs, and about 1.5 hours from Denver. This Eleven Mile Canyon is really a great fishery, and a beautiful place to camp and fish.
Even though I didnt actually net any fish, I did hook 4 during very foul weather. I am not sure why I lost all those fish mid fight, maybe I did something wrong, I am not sure. All I know is that there were fish everywhere, but they were very picky. I probably was using the wrong flies, or wrong presentation. Maybe both! But, next time I go, I will make sure and get more info about the river, and hopefully get some fish in the net.
I said that I would list the sling bag I was using, so here it is. Its a Fishpond Summit and I got the Gravel color. Its a small-ish sling, but really holds a fair amount of stuff. In fact, I am able to put all my camera gear in it. I do like it, but cannot figure out for the life of me the best way to keep my net with me. Here is a link to this sling on Amazon, where you can see many pictures and such. http://amzn.to/2FlGCHX
Also, I finally have my new fly boxes and they are for sale on eBay. I really like them, and I think you will also. They range from $11.99-16.99. Check them out here along with some flies I am selling... https://www.ebay.com/usr/escapingdailygrind
I ended up fishing my 10' 3wt custom fly rod the entire time, and paired it with a Piscifun Sword 2 - http://amzn.to/2GCfhkb
I also was using a 4wt double taper fly line by Rio - http://amzn.to/2HEZmTx
Also, for those who dont know, the indicator yarn system I was talking about was the "New Zealand Indicator System" which is awesome for sensitivity, and soft taking trout. However you do need floatant with it, or it won't work properly. So here is a link to the system - http://amzn.to/2Fq1xdc
Also a link to the floatant I use with it - http://amzn.to/2HGdfkw
And now a list of flies I used...

Zebra Midge - https://youtu.be/CBSSUccfop4

San Juan River in February - Off color water - McFly Angler Episode 42
Fishing in winter can be tough. Many places around the country are frozen over, or just not fishable. But there are still fish to be had when fishing on the San Juan River. In fact, this is one of my favorite times of year to fish this river, due to the fact that it is less crowded. Also the water is off color, and therefor you can up the size of your fly slightly and not have to fish the really tiny stuff like size 26. Now you can fish a size 20-22 midge/annelid pattern.
So this was not just a fishing trip, it was a test for a new reel, the Piscifun Sword 2. I do really like the reel. Unfortunately I didnt have any big fish today, so no chance to test the drag. But, it did feel solid, and seems like a great reel, I am really happy with it. If you wanna buy this reel, here is a link to purchase it. Its only $66 for the 5/6 size, and less for the smaller version. A great price for a fully machined reel.
So overall, while I didn't catch anything large, I had a great time fishing with Jeff. He caught some really nice fish! And also was a lot of fun to fish with.

Animas River in January - Fishing Native American Ute Land - McFly Angler Episode 41
The Animas is one of those rivers that can either be amazing, or terrible! I have fished it many times getting skunked, and I also have fished it where I have excellent days! Today was an excellent day. While none of the fish were monsters, I did catch lots of them. And they were very fun. I got to fish with my buddy Carter, and he also brought one of his friends who has only been fishing for a little while. He was able to catch a wild rainbow for the first time. He had caught trout before, but never wild trout, always stockers in ponds and lakes.
I fished all day with that new zealand indicator system. It seemed like the trout weren't fully committing to the flies, and just making little nibbles. This means that without a sensitive indicator, I would have missed lots of bites. In fact thats why I think Carter and Eric didnt catch as many fish, I saw their indicators barely move a few times, which is hard to detect. You should pick up this system if you haven't already. Here is a link to where you can purchase it online if your local fly shop doesn't have them. http://amzn.to/2Gijb2D
Also, I fished all day with 2 flies. One was the GTI Caddis, and the other was more of a simple dubbed caddis. I have tied the GTI Caddis before on camera, and here is that link... https://youtu.be/-lszOLv1gbQ
As for that simple caddis, I am working on making a video for that as well. Its much easier to tie, than the GTI, and its also quite effective. Keep checked in with the channel to see that one on video. Basically this time of year, any olive caddis pupae will work.

San Juan River in January - Large Rainbows and Nymphing Streamers - McFly Angler Episode 40
The San Juan River is fishable year round. I have caught many fish while its snowing out. The river is a tail water, so it does not freeze up, and the temperatures stay relatively the same all year round. The winter is one of my favorite seasons to fish at the Juan because the river isnt as pressured, and the larger fish come out. The lake also turns over usually in late December and the river becomes slightly off color. For that reason, you can fish larger nymphs and even do really well on streamers. No more fishing the really tiny midge patterns you are used to fishing in the spring and summer. I find that you can get away with size 20-22 midge patterns, 18-20 red annelid patterns and some smaller bunny leeches and other streamers as well. In fact, I really like to fish a streamer under an indicator and drop a red annelid behind it. Also, you want to fish a bit more flashy this time of year.
Here is the phone number for FloatNFish if you want to setup a float trip with Kelly. (505) 632-5385
Also, I talked about the New Zealand Indicator system in the video, so here is a link to where you can buy it online if your local fly shop doesn't carry it. http://amzn.to/2DOOEIL

Fishing the Animas in December! - Animas river in Colorado - McFly Angler Episode 39
In most parts of the United States, fishing in the winter is something that is not possible. Either snow covers the ground, or fishing is not very productive. But not so in southern Colorado or northern New Mexico. Around here, you can practically fish year round. Granted there are a few days out of the year you probably would not want to be on the water, however there isnt really a specific season where fishing dies down.
So in December I only got to go fishing once, and that was on the Animas river. During the winter, the fish are more lethargic and therefor streamers are not quite the best bet for fishing. They dont want to chase swinging streamers. So nymphing is probably your best bet. Caddis pupae tend to be one of the more effective patterns to use during this time. And that is the fly I caught all my fish on. Other patterns to use are going to be copper johns, prince nymphs, and the various baetis nymphs as well. You want to fish slow, and relatively deep, as the fish are deep in holes just conserving energy. While some people are randomly productive with some dry flies, you really cannot guaranty fish on dry this time of year. You kinda have to be at the right place at the right time. So bring those dries along with you, but dont be disappointed if you never get to use them. Your best bet for catching will be on the nymph. At least that is my experience.
The fly I caught the most amount of fish on was called the GTI caddis. Here is a video on how to tie that. https://youtu.be/-lszOLv1gbQ
Per request from many subscribers, I am listing the gear I used on this trip, with links to where you can purchase them.

Fishing in November - Dolores River and Fishing with my Kid - McFly Angler Episode 38
This will be probably the most memorable month of fishing for me. I had a great day fishing on the dolores and caught quite a few quality fish, and all of them wild trout. Actually including a salmon. I also tested out a new annelid I designed and it did awesomely on the San Juan River! I caught quite a few good sized fish. I also got to fish with my kid! He had never fished before, but practiced quite a bit with his little kid fishing rod. He can cast really well, and we decided to try actual fishing. He did such an amazing job and caught a fish the very first time he went! I was so proud!

One of my favorite nymphing rivers! - McFly Angler Episode 37
The Upper Dolores River is a great river! There are times of the year that the fishing is not easy, but if you catch it right, you can have some great fish in a short amount of time. For instance, this trip we caught 5 nice fish in about 2 hours. This river has an abundance of rainbow and also brown trout. As well as trout, it also has salmon that run in it during the spawning period.
So I caught a fish the first cast, and the 2nd cast. Then it slowed down a little. Even so, we still caught a lot of fish! This was one of my favorite and most memorable fishing trips in a long time.

Fishing in Port Aransas! - Fly Fishing the Gulf - McFly Angler Episode 36
I used to live in Corpus Christi, Texas and would catch fish non stop. However recently hurricane Harvey came through and destroyed much of Port Aransas and Rockport, and Huston got hit really bad as well. It seems like much of the fish have moved from my normal spots, and It was very difficult over the last 3 days trying to catch them and find them. I saw only one redfish in the whole 3 days of fishing, and only a few speckled trout.
This was the last day on my trip, and I ended up doing a bit of a hail mary and went on the jetties in Port Aransas. I was going out to see if there were maybe some Tarpon or Jacks at the end of the jetties. I also thought there might be some sea trout, and even a few bull reds. While I did see a few people catch some bull reds, they were using live bait, and sinking deep to the bottom, where my fly could not reach.
Unfortunately the only fish I caught was a needle fish, and they were everywhere shredding my flies. I did see a lot of sea turtles though, so that was really cool.

Fishing the Gulf after Hurricane Harvey! - Day 2 - McFly Angler Episode 35
On our 2nd day fishing in the gulf, we decided to try and kayak to find fish. The day before we saw many fish popping the top out of casting and wading reach. So we figured if we got out to where they were, we would catch some. We were wrong. This day was super slow. I got 5 perch, and Johnny got a small rat red. Not what I usually expect on fishing trips in the gulf. I usually catch fish left and right. However, that storm that came through before my trip down to the gulf really sent many of the fish deep, and the ones we did see weren't as active as usual.

Fishing after Hurricane Harvey! - Gulf of Mexico in Texas - McFly Angler Episode 34
The devastation of hurricane Harvey was terrible in Rockport and Port Aransas. Just so sad to see all the trash and debris. Especially since Port Aransas is such a beautiful little town. I was shocked to see how much got destroyed in the hurricane. But luckily Corpus seemed to be in full working order, and I was able to spend some quality time with my buddy.
Wading this first day was difficult, and it was tough to find fish. Also the temperature was in the high 80's and the sun was pounding down on us. So being in waders was a bit uncomfortable. However it was a nice day, and we had a great time fishing even though we didnt catch very many fish.
I was able to test out the new reel that Piscifun sent me called the Platte, and it did great! For the low $100's, its an excellent deal for such an incredible reel. Check it out here! http://amzn.to/2ztILNF
Also I was able to test out Rio's new line called "Winter Redfish". I was using a WF8F version of the line and it was seriously the best line I've used for fishing that area. It sailed large flies out with ease, and it floated high even after a few days of fishing with no cleaning. Check this amazing line out here. http://amzn.to/2zujBOW

Animas River in Fall - Lots of Moss! - catching rainbow trout - McFly Angler Episode 33
The Animas river is a technical river. Its tough even for seasoned fisherman to catch fish every trip. I have had my share of bad days on the river, and been skunked many times. However I caught lots of fish this trip, but they were all very small. They were pretty little fish, just really small.
I was using a grasshopper pattern in the morning dropping to a nymph for most of the morning. Then switched to a slump buster streamer in the later afternoon. All of which were covered in moss at almost all casts. Just lots and lots of moss, all day long.

Hillbilly Bonefish - Carp fishing in a small lake - McFly Angler Episode 31
Carp fishing is said to be similar to bonefish fishing, just without the pristine water and beautiful tropical flats. They spook easy, require light line, delicate presentations, and smaller flies. Also they feel like you hooked into a freight train when you get one on the line! They are absolutely one of the most rewarding freshwater species to target with a fly rod. If you haven't carp fished before, you are definitely missing out.
Where I went were a few small lakes right off of the San Juan River which is one of the best trout fisheries in the United States. However these lakes are pretty unknown to the general public, and there are some monster carp in there. My largest I have caught was a 30" carp when I was fishing a 5wt rod. I felt like I was going to break the rod due to that one fighting so hard. That fish took me 21 minutes to bring in, and has to be one of the hardest fights I have ever had on a fly rod. Of course this fish was only 20" or so, and I was using a 6wt rod, so he was much easier to bring in. It only took me 2 minutes on this last fish, because I could put a bit of backbone into him. Overall though, any carp is fun and enjoyable to fish for. The fights are epic, and its very tough to hook them. Lots of hiding, sneaking, and crouching while casting.
For a list of gear I used go to my website store where I list all the rods, reels, line, and apparel I use on my fishing trips. http://www.mcflyangler.com/store

Floating the Animas - With Fresh Salt Fishing - McFly Angler Episode 30
The Animas river is a tough river, but when you catch fish, they are good sized and energetic fish! I have had some trouble catching fish during the summer months here on the river, due to the season's high water flows. I thought taking a float boat would help give us some more luck. However this was not the case.
While we didn't hook any fish on the boat, we did have a great time. Weston was in the kayak the entire time, and said he loved it! It was fun, and sorta like a roller coaster.
After the float trip was over, we still had some daylight, so we went to wade a spot we saw coming down on the float trip. It looked good, but we didnt catch any. Colin though hooked a decent fish, that started jumping like a tarpon. It really was an amazing site to see.
Overall we had a great time. Even though there weren't any fish in the net, it was enjoyable just being on the water, and with some great company. I think even Matt had a good time while floating us. He was very skilled, and made for a fun day.

Animas River Wading - With Fresh-Salt Fishing - McFly Angler Episode 29
If you remember a few weeks back, I went fishing the San Juan River with Fresh Salt Fishing, and we had a great time! We caught many Brown Trout, and one was really really large! They came back to fish with me, and we decided to hit up the Animas River. We had a float trip scheduled for the next day, however we had some time this day to wade the river.
Fishing the Animas can be tough. Its not one of those rivers that many people can go out and guaranty a boat load of fish. But when you catch one, usually its a very good sized fish. Mostly browns live in this river, and they are wild. They pull hard, and make you fight for every inch of line.
Keep in mind this river is very slippery, so if you come out, make sure and bring some wading boots with studs in them.

Gunnison River dry fly fishing - Beautiful Wild Trout - Black Canyon - McFly Angler Episode 28
Last episode I setup camp at the blue mesa escape camp ground, and went to fish the Gunnison river. I ended up getting dehydrated and almost didnt make it back. I only caught 2 fish, and both were rather small. I ended up going out to Gunnison to talk to the local fly shop, and got some advice for the river. And boy am I glad I did, because I caught some nice fish this trip! If you want to watch last weeks video, check it out here... https://youtu.be/APPZDga19ds
I started off nymphing with a large wire worm and small nymph. I hooked and landed a large wild rainbow trout. One of the prettiest I have ever seen. The colors were vivid, and it was very dark. A good fighter too. Hooking it on a small midge made the fight difficult however it was also very fun! I was so happy to get a fish so early on in the trip.
A little later in the day, after fishing many spots with no success. I noticed the trout started hitting the top of the water. So I threw on a dry fly, and hooked a decent brook trout on the small adams dry fly. He was also very beautiful, with well defined spots.
I started noticing some large moths on the water, and flying in the air. I didnt have any other large dry fly except a stimulator. So I threw that on, and hooked a really nice trout on that large dry fly.
Overall I was very happy with the trip, an absolute great day on the water!
Some of you have asked for the gear and flies I have used today. Below is the info on that, and some links to where you can get them for good deals, and from reportable sources.

Gunnison River Colorado - Fly Fishing Tailwater of the Blue Mesa Reservoir - McFly Angler Episode 27
The Gunnison River is a tailwater of the Blue Mesa Reservoir, and its really good fishing. Better known is the Black Canyon River section of the Gunnison which is further down stream, but it is still great fishing right near the dam. In fact, one of the trout I caught on my second day, was one of the prettiest rainbow's I've ever seen. Super colorful, just absolutely amazing! Also, there was something a bit surreal about this river. Being in the middle of a narrow canyon, with rocks on either side. There was an echo that made for some excellent noises when fighting fish. Every time they would jump, it sounded amplified.
The fish were hitting streamer, but on the 2nd day, I started getting some fish on dry fly and nymphs. It was a really really good day. Please stay tuned next week for an absolutely amazing day fishing!
I stayed at a camp ground overnight in a tent. The camp ground was called "Blue Mesa Escape" and I highly recommend staying there if you plan on camping around that area. If river fishing is not your thing, there is a large lake that have some record sized lake trout in them. Seriously, some are upwards of 50+ lbs! If you want to stay there, please make a reservation at the camp ground before showing up. They are booked up regularly because they are so nice and good prices. Fly fishing on the San Juan River can be really good, and it can be really bad. Luckily the day that I had guests with me from FreshSaltFishing it was a good day fishing. We caught 7 browns that day, and most were really good sized.
FreshSaltFishing are a great group of people. Colin and Westin are great fisherman, and Tyler was an awesome photographer and videographer. Also all of them were really fun to fish with. They have a passion for fishing, and it shows. I will list below their youtube channel, instagram and website links.

Haviland Lake Kayak Fishing - Beautiful Alpine Lake - McFly Angler Episode 25
Haviland Lake is a beautiful small lake up north of Durango Colorado. You can kayak, swim, and camp at the lake. While you can catch fish off the shore, having a boat really improves your catch rates. I was able to stop into 4 Corners Riversports the morning of my trip and rent a kayak from them. An awesome shop with lots of really nice kayaks for sale, and also very nice kayak rentals. They also sell and rent other items used in watersports as well, like paddle boards, rafts, water games, and more. Check it out and visit their website here... https://www.riversports.com
Keep in mind that these fish are stocked, and meant to keep. You can catch and release, but my wife wanted to cook up some trout and have a meal with my parents. So I kept 4 fish, and Carter took home 3. They were really good, and none was wasted! We ate every ounce of fish! HAHA
While fly selection could change from day to day, many of you have asked me to list what flies worked. So here is that list...
Olive Bead Head Wooly Bugger
Black Bead Head Wooly Bugger
Brook Trout Strip Streamer - This was the most productive fly we used. Here is a picture of one I found online. http://www.bigyflyco.com/images/Streamers/littlebrooktrout.jpg

Crazy day! Caught 5 different species of fish! - McFly Angler Episode 24
Kyle took me out fishing again on his boat and wow! We had a blast! Caught fish non stop! Most of them smallmouth bass, however we caught 5 different species. Smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, carp, crappie and bluegill. It was really one of the most fun days fishing I have ever had.
I was also able to catch fish on a fly I tied with my own beard hair. That was a joke of a fly, but it actually worked! I couldn't believe it! Watch the video of me tying this "beard hair fly" here.... https://youtu.be/vPaIG25ng7E
Kyle was fishing bass on a topwater fly, and I was able to get a shot of a bass coming up and crushing it, It was such a cool shot!
Here is a list of the gear I used today...

Electra Lake Stacked Trout - Shooting Fish In a Barrel - McFly Angler Episode 23
Electra Lake is an awesome lake with some monster trout! It was Very easy to catch them, at least the day I went. They were stacked up in the river and inlets of the lake, and I was able to hook 4 fish in a 20-30 minute period. Just absolutely amazing fishing!
Electra lake doesn't allow for wading into the lake, or for boats except for those run by the people who live on the lake. However, there is some great fishing from shore, and you won't be disappointed in the quality of these fish. Every fish I hooked was a good sized and colorful fish. If you haven't been there before, its well worth the $15 to fish the lake. Check it out!
Here is a list of Gear I used in this video and links to where you can buy them.
