Christianity believes that salvation from a human (in cooperation with Christ) is essential. God says (Psalm 60:11) that salvation from a human is futile. I wonder who is right. I'm not myself yet. I didn’t realize until I was editing this video that I was already starting to talk with a little bit of a lisp because my tooth infection was going from the right side of my throat into my mouth—specifically under my tongue. I woke up at 12:30 am to find the bottom of my mouth so swollen that I couldn’t even stick out my tongue or tuck the tip of it under my teeth. The abscess was pushing my tongue toward the top of my mouth. I was dressing to go to the ER when I started researching abscesses, and I realized that I would PROBABLY not go into sepsis, and that I will PROBABLY still be able to breathe, and so I got back undressed and went to bed. Since waking up at 4 o’clock, the swelling has gone down somewhat. Nevertheless, for your entertainment, I will share with you on Monday a short video I made showing how I was talking during the full-blown mouth invasion. The people who insist that we must "accept Christ's free gift or go to hell for eternity," do not accept Christ's free gift themselves. This is the era, predicted by Paul, wherein believers and feigned believers alike "will not tolerate sound teaching" (2 Timothy 4:3). The word I'm focusing on today is the word "tolerate" (Gr. anechomai), which was also translated in the Concordant Version, "bear with." SOUND teaching is teaching that has stood the test of time, thus making it feel old. Some folks can't bear with (anechomai) antiquity for long (it feels boring and stagnant to them), and thus will "heap up teachers in accord with their own desires, and will be turned aside to myths" (2 Timothy 4:3-4). Myths are new and exciting and can be crafted to suit one's tastes. Myths are malleable. But as such, they do NOT stand the test of time and thus, over time, are exposed. But by the time the myths are exposed (it may take years), they have taken hold upon the hearts of those holding them. (Myths cater to the emotions.) By this time, not even facts will dislodge a myth from those deriving comfort from them. God causes myths to be blown up by competent teachers who would be considered boring and old fashioned were it not for the fact that exposing myths during an era of myths is stressful, depressing, and at times anxiety-producing. Fortunately for the modern learner, teachers afflicted with these maladies, being already quirky, generally become funny—when they're not crying, that is. In Ephesians 5 and 6, Paul is instructing those saints who happen to be married, or happen to be parents, or happen to be children, or happen to be slaves, how to deport themselves. Paul is not promoting any of these stations in life, as should be evident when one realizes that advice to slaves is included in his instruction. Would anyone imagine Paul to be PROMOTING slavery as an ideal way to live? Of course not. And yet there are two teachers in the body of Christ today, namely Clyde Pilkington and Stephen Hill, who passionately insist both in articles and in books that, here in Ephesians, Paul is promoting marriage and parenting as "the advanced will of the Lord for today." Because these men specialize in patriarchy (they publish other articles and even books on this topic) and focus on family life, they want EVERYONE to be patriarchs and to focus on family life. It is not merely that marriage and parenting are noble enterprises, but that these enterprises have moved "front and center," and are actually "the focus of our era." Yes, and not only that, but "the advanced will of the Lord for today." Anyone, then, wanting to live "the advanced will of the Lord for today," and reading the writings of these men, would feel compelled to be married with children. Otherwise, they could not be very advanced. Anyone reading Paul's earlier letter of 1 Corinthians, specifically chapter 7, will realize that Paul would prefer everyone to be like him, that is, single and unencumbered. The reason is easy to understand (for most people); it is so both men and women might be "undistracted for the Lord." Paul takes pains to point out that married people must focus on each other and would therefore be unable to focus entirely on Christ. This is timeless truth. But while Paul would prefer body members to be single, he does not insist on it, for he is aware of the human need for sexual relations. Pilkington and Hill reject the entire letter of 1 Corinthians as containing any advice for us today. Why so radical of a disposition? Because in 1908 a man named Charles Welch decided that Paul's letters should be surgically dissected from themselves. Where would be the cut? At the line of Acts 28:28, when Paul was in prison. Who decided this again? Charles Welch. What authority did this man have to do such a thing? None. What happened at Acts 28:28 that was so important? Nothing to justify Paul's canon being so crudely dissected. Paul merely repeated to some representative Jews come to Rome what had been said before, that they were a stubborn people (not exactly headline news there) and that God had already gone to the nations ("to the nations WAS dispatched this salvation of God"—Acts 28:28), a common fact which had occurred thirty years before at the call of Paul on the road to Damascus. God's new attitude toward the nations was unmistakably (at least it's unmistakable to most people) provided for when our Lord died on the cross and the veil in the temple was divinely rent—thus obliterating, in probably less than one second, the Jews' monopoly on access to God. THIS was the dividing line between divine Jewish preference and divine Jewish rejection—not some dull, one-sentence history lesson uttered by Paul to a handful of Israelites. But back to Ephesians. To say that advising wives, husbands, and children how they ought to behave is commensurate with PROMOTING marriage and parenthood—and not only promoting it but insisting that these institutions are "the advanced will of the Lord for today"—one would also have to say that, since Paul is also advising slaves in this same context, then Paul must also be promoting slavery as "the advanced will of the Lord for today." But since we know that Paul would never do that, then neither is he promoting marriage and parenting as such. And yet Pilkington and Hill still insist that he is. How do these men deal, then, with slavery in this same context? Deceitfully. In their articles, they change "slavery" to "employment," wash their hands and walk away, hoping, apparently, that no one will notice the sleight-of-hand. Based on the evidence and the hiding of evidence, the body of Christ must reject this selfish, unscriptural teaching. In no way is Paul promoting marriage and parenting in Ephesians 5, no more than he is promoting slavery. Paul is merely instructing those who happen to be in these stations how to deport themselves as believers. Paul's advice in 1 Corinthians chapter seven concerning his wish for believers to remain single if they can, stands. Otherwise, Paul would be, in Ephesians, encouraging saints to BE distracted for the Lord—the very thing he warns against in Corinthians. This is impossible. In one of the most deceptive statements that a body of Christ teacher can make, Clyde Pilkington teaches that marriage and parenting are “the focus of our era,” and “the advanced will of our Lord for today.” Isn’t it a shame that the apostle Paul could not live the advanced will of our Lord for today? By insisting that Paul’s advice in 1 Corinthians to avoid marriage if one can in order to be undistracted for the Lord contradicts Paul’s later advice in Ephesians to marry and have children (Paul NEVER ADVISES ANYONE in Ephesians to marry and have children), Mr. Pilkington at the same time relegates the snatching away of the body of Christ to a bygone era. I’m not sure which came first: the desire to keep the saints from being snatched away from their homes and families, or the desire to make marriage and parenting (Clyde also writes a newsletter about patriarchy) the "focus or our era" and the "advanced will of our Lord for today." If one’s PERSONAL focus is marriage and parenting, then it would certainly benefit one spiritually—at least in the eyes of others—if one could convince these others that marriage and parenting are “the advanced will of our Lord for today.” I mean, who would not want to portray oneself as living the advanced will of our Lord? Again, how unfortunate for the apostle Paul and for the unmarried and childless in the body of Christ today. Clyde has meticulously fashioned an artificial Scriptural distinction between 1 Corinthians and Ephesians (between singleness and marriage) in order to glorify his personal bent (I'm not even saying he's doing this consciously) and to keep himself and his family on this earth practicing it. If patriarchy one’s thing, then fine. If one wants to live in this fantasy world of marriage and parenting being “front and center” and “the focus of our era,” and “the advanced will of the Lord for today,” then fine. But when one contorts Scripture in order build and then maintain this fantasy SO AS TO PASS IT ON TO OTHERS AS "SCRIPTURAL," well, then those of us who realize that Paul’s marriage advice never changes and that the snatching away is to be the glorious expectation of all body members of all eras—we must vehemently object and expose the construct. Do married people have worries and troubles in this life, or should we relegate this statement of Paul's in 1 Corinthians 7 as belonging to a bygone era, to a time when the Corinthians were suffering persecution? In this edition of MZTV, not only will you learn what "to be on fire" specifically refers to (in 1 Corinthians 7:9), but you will learn the proper translation of 1 Corinthians 7:26. Where the KJV has "the present distress," the Concordant Literal New Testament (CLNT) has, "the present necessity." Wow, what a difference. Instead of their being some first-century persecution underway causing Paul to dispense unnatural marriage advice, we discover "the present necessity" to be something far more common, simple, and timeless. You will not hear this interpretation anywhere else. As a bonus, I share with you the very moment on August 17, 1969, when the heavens convulsed and the earth followed suit—when the last shreds of innocence (albeit the liberated variety) appeared and then disappeared in the middle of a deep purple night. We are told by Christian scholars that either a persecution of the saints or the supposed coming indignation forced the apostle Paul's marital advice in 1 Corinthians chapter 7, especially when he encourages believers to remain single. Clyde Pilkington takes this to the next level, insisting that the advice here is not only obsolete, but that it belongs to a different era, and that now believers are to marry at every opportunity, seize the day—family-wise—and use up the world as much as they can. What Mr. Pilkington and the Christian scholars have in common is that they both use the KJV. Mr. Pilkington's use of this error-ridden version is worse and less excusable, however, as he knows there's a better version available—the Concordant Literal New Testament. But he cherry-picks the KJV when needed to forward his "Family First" agenda. In opposition to all this, I contend to you that Paul's marital advice of 1 Corinthians is timeless, and that there was NO CHANGE WHATSOEVER between the advice given to the Corinthians and that to the Ephesians some thirty years later. Those who teach that Christ's return is probably hundreds of years away MUST divorce Paul's earlier epistles from his latter ones. Why? Because it was Paul's earlier epistles (1 Corinthians and 1 Thessalonians) where he revealed the secret of the snatching away of the body of Christ and that those body members alive at the return of Christ will not be put to repose. This is bad news to those who are afraid of the snatching away and who would dread being removed from their families, and so they must concoct teachings that relegate Paul's early letters to a bone-heap of the past. Two of the teachings subserving this purpose are: 1) The Acts 28 Theory, and 2) The Pre-Millennial Kingdom Theory. Clyde Pilkington embraces both of these theories, taking the further step of claiming that Paul's marriage advice of 1 Corinthians is NOT his marriage advice of Ephesians. But Clyde makes a critical mistake when teaching that Paul's advice in 1 Corinthians 7:29 ("...let those having wives be as though not having them") would cause husbands not only to lose their wives but to grieve the holy spirit of God. AS IF Paul would EVER give marital advice to husbands that would cause such destruction. Simply because Paul gives marital advice in Ephesians does NOT mean that Paul intends for marriage and family life to now be the pinnacle of a spiritual walk. And yet this is the artificial construct of those who MUST divorce the Ephesians Paul from the 1 Corinthians Paul in order to make the snatching away of the body of Christ disappear. Mercifully, God has given us a message of grace to sustain us and help us survive this era and eon. But at its core, this is NOT an era or eon of grace, but an era of suffering (Romans 8:18) and an eon of wickedness (Galatians 1:4.) It is an eon of wickedness that CONTAINS a message of grace. Clyde Pilkington, a dear friend and teacher in the body of Christ, desperately wants this eon to go on for another ten thousand years. This is due to his belief that the era spoken of by Paul in his early epistles is not the era we're living in now. Mr. Pilkington has bought into a theory that cuts Paul's letters in half, relegating the early half to a different era than the latter half. It is not difficult to demonstrate from Scripture the unworkability of this theory. Clyde's motivation for wanting this era to continue is that he is a comfortable, happy family man convinced that marriage and child-bearing are the highest spiritual attainment in this life. This being the case (in Clyde's theology), why would God want to interrupt something so beautiful and holy? This myopic vision selfishly ignores the greater problems of suffering and death that have plagued the human race since Adam. Not only that, but it ignores the TEMPORARY nature of the eon (explained by Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter 7) and the groaning for deliverance (Romans 8:23) implanted by God into every member of Christ's body. Well—every member except Clyde Pilkington, that is, and those who have grasped onto his teaching that this era is "limitless" and that we're all guaranteed to die. Jesus told a parable about a man who set out to build a tower but failed to calculate the cost. Adverse circumstances got the best of him and he could not complete the project. I'm a walking contradiction. On the one hand, I want things to go well for me. On the other hand, with success and notoriety comes more responsibility, more accountability, more scrutiny, more trouble. I want to arrive somewhere, but I want to fly under the radar at the same time. I love sincere compliments (I love it when you tell me that my work has changed your life, that you watch the show faithfully with your coffee in the morning, and that this channel is a lifeline for you in a wicked eon), but on the other hand, when building-up turns to fawning, I squirm a little bit and will say something like, "Let's change the subject for awhile." Let me be the subject for five minutes (thank you very much, I need it), then on to the predicate. I think we are so used to being low, unknown, unnoticed, and under-appreciated, that when the opposite things come we get startled into reticence and reflexively draw back into our comfort zones. I have crawled out of my comfort zone many times—driving to Cleveland for five weeks in 1999 to do the live Grace Cafe radio program was one of these times, quitting the Postal Service to do this work full time was certainly another—and I'm always thankful, in the end, to have peered out from my groundhog hole. But it comes with a price, eh? Too MUCH of a good thing is always bad. At least for now. "Everything, all the time" is a lyric from the Eagles' song, "Life in the Fast Lane," and even one of the most popular musical groups of all time paints it as a bad thing. And yet, "everything, all the time' is precisely what God is going to give us when we are snatched away. As presently constituted with flesh and blood bodies, we could not handle "everything, all the time." We would literally die of pleasure. This is the practical reason why our bodies must be changed. Our new bodies will be built to accept and sustain the glory that is rightfully ours through Christ. In Philippians 3:12, Paul relates how he had to learn to both abound and be abased. I think abounding might have been the harder lesson for Paul. Maybe for us too? We tend to think, "I'm not worthy" or, 'I want neither the notoriety nor the responsibility of fame." Well, don't worry. God has built in ceilings to even the greatest pleasures on earth so that when you do get too much, you vomit it out. This will not be a problem when we rise to meet the Lord in the air. Then, our bodies will sustain and appreciate, with room to spare, supernal glory. We will not only accept but expect the worship of ancient, celestial magistrates—all due to Christ. We will be the only people in human history to cheat death, and death doesn't like it. This is when Death loses its sting, because Death is shocked at what happens and never quite gets over it. I owe Robert an apology for saying yesterday he believed that Jesus left His body in the tomb. I got it wrong and I’m sorry. Rather, Robert believes that Jesus Christ left His body of the Mount of Olives, shedding it just before ascending into heaven in sight of His disciples, leaving it to His crew to figure out what to do with it. (I am hoping they took it to a taxidermist and that it will show up someday at a flea market or garage sale.) Why did Jesus leave His body behind? Notwithstanding the fact Jesus told His disciples he was “flesh and bone,” Robert still insists that the resurrected body of Christ also contained blood. And since flesh and blood cannot enjoy an allotment in the kingdom, that body had to go. And of course Robert still believes that living members of the body of Christ will leave corpses for our loved-ones to find, notwithstanding the fact that Paul says our bodies will be transfigured. Robert has his own way of thinking, refusing to avail himself of teachers. Teachers misled him in the past, therefore no teacher can be trusted. I began this show with a formal apology to Robert, but it was distracting and took up too much time, so I deleted it and hit the ground running with the topic at hand. I'll apologize on Monday. But turning back now to happier topics that do not involve corpses (my apology to Robert and others who see corpses everywhere), let’s revisit Corinthians 15:54-54 and see when exactly Paul says Death will be swallowed up by Victory, and when exactly Death loses its sting.
