Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 18: Lighthouse, Heritage Hill and Endless Paths 10 and 11
The most important loot is highlighted in today's thumbnail. This session involves a trip to the Lighthouse. It's a nice little side story, but still not as good as Raedric's or Blood Legacy. Same with Heritage Hill. Both of these areas are interesting, but Defiance Bay is getting a bit long in the tooth.
I feel like maybe the Heritage Hill section should have been completed later, but I don't think we missed anything here. I assume we can't actually save the knights there. We take a break mid-Floor 11, but we'll be back to it soon enough. A decent amount of progress here.

Pillars of Eternity, Part 17: Defiance Bay Sidequests (Catacombs and Wael)
We cleared out a lot of sidequests. The Catacombs sidequests were pretty fun, but not nearly as a high as Raedric and Blood Legacy. Our team also knocked out everything up to turning in the research to Dunstan. I want to clear the quest, but I don't want to bind souls to animated armor forever. I wish I could get the XP in some way by not turning it in.
Also: Everyone in Defiance Bay seems terrible. Even the nice old man needed some prodding to not leave the love his life trapped in a soul gem forever so he could feel a little better. The Dozens: A bunch of bullies and thugs. The Crucible Knights: Very bad. House D: D is for Dicks. There's even a jerk lord who wants our fortress. Everything is bad.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 16: Bird Paladin and More Defiance Bay Sidequests
Overall, now that I've had Bird Lady for awhile, she seems to be my second best tank. Sure, some tanks have better Deflection. Some have better DR. Some output more damage, or have more support. But she's pretty much rank 2 or 3 with all of those. So, welcome to the team bird lady.
I also really, really think Defiance Bay has a problem. Well, many problems. And those problems are: Everyone who lives in Defiance Bay. We'll get to the time stamps to show you what I mean. By the end of this, we've learned the Dozens are fine with murdering scholars and the Crucible Knights want to stick souls into armor to make forever guardians. House Doemenal's minor murders seem quaint in comparison. Maybe I do hate everyone in Defiance Bay.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 15: Cleaning Things Up and Starting Act 2
A lot of this video involves our introduction to Defiance Bay, a town filled with criminals that were tuned for players who came here immediately after the dead dwarf sent you to Maerwald, who opened the gate at Caed Nua and bopped on over to Defiance Bay at maybe Level 3 or 4. Not the Level 8 regional hero that defeated Raedric and the cultist threat at Dyrford village. I don't want to murder every person in Defiance Bay -- but they seem committed to the bit.
We help a nice lady leave a drug dealing dick, help a kid find a dagger, and do a few other things around town.
I wasn't expecting another character to join in Act 2, I should have though since older games seem to enjoy just dropping characters on you whenever they want, instead of giving you a party to work with. But, it looks like we have a Paladin that we can make a more traditional sort than Lorrista the Ballista. Well, maybe. I do like weird things.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 14: Partial Searing Falls, Partial Floor 8 and Bandit Attack
I had a bit of time in the middle of the day, so I just sort of bopped around. There's not a whole lot happening here, despite a few hours of progress. I don't know if there's really much to say before we get to the time stamps.
Except that's not what I expected Hiravias to turn into in his wildshape. I thought it was a cat. Not a Hrothgar on steroids.
Also, check out @jonusfalcon for our Solasta playthrough; I don't want to bother recording and time stamping that nonsense.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 13: Finishing Floor 7 and Dyrford Village Quests
We're still in the wandering portion of the game. But, this was actually enjoyable wandering. I really liked the Blood Legacy quest, and I think the design of it (putting the Grieving Mother in the same area where she can get you a good ending to a quest, etc.) is just all around solid. The dragon egg quest is pretty meh, but not bad.
Blood Legacy is maybe the second high point of the game. So, Raedric's: Super Good. Everything up to Blood Legacy, average to above average. Blood Legacy: Super Good. Also, I think it is time to enchant things next video.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 12: Floor 6 and 7 of the Endless Paths
Alright. We made new friends -- including the acid bear you see in the thumbnail that uppercuts skeletons. So, let's get started! We sort of grind through two floors of the Endless Paths, though we haven't tackled the boss yet of Floor 7.
There was some frustration after Raedric's, but the game is on the upswing again, enjoyment wise for me. I think I just needed that feeling of mix-and-match party building.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 11: Making New Friends
This session is mainly making all of the mercenaries (and about 15 minutes of messing up with the character creator.) Our new heroes:
1. Lorrista, the Paladin Arbalesteer, who when she kills an enemy triggers healing, has a massive crit range, Lay on Hands and a giant Accuracy Aura.
2. Ragdalan, a high crit single weapon attacker who not only crits a lot, but his attacks have a good shot of interrupting people.
3. Lelias the Shifter Druid who turns into an Acid Bear.
4. Muriel, flail and shield Orlan priest support off-tank.
5. Brasgan, Barbarian with massive auto attack AoEs with a sword that bypasses more DR than most armor has.
6. Monk Tank Coggins the Dwarf With All the Punch CCs
7. Quidain, a CC range cipher who also has the Barbarian cross class talent to randomly enrage to shoot people dead.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 10: Druid Friend and Bounty Hunting
Finishing off Stormwall Gorge and leveling Hiravias didn't take that long. I settled on making him a caster druid, but I wish I had waited longer to make that decision since I think, narratively, focusing on shifting makes more sense for him. Oh well. Casting is way more impactful, I think.
Here's where the frustrations with the AI is really going to come into play. Watch the frustration of dealing with the forest dweller bounty. That's peak the game fighting against you more than the enemies. Overall, it has been the least fun part of the game, though the other two bounties went a lot smoother -- I assume because there was a lot less clutter on the screen or chain summoning. I think I said it best before the last pull: It's just an ugly fight that's hard to parse. Real Time With Pause at its worst.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 9: Grieving Mother, Village and More
This session involves us leveling up the Grieving Mother. I made her a dual wielding psychic dominator. So, CC and death. Seems like what she should do. I also took care of the quest for Medreth in town, which didn't end well at all. After starting the search for Harond's daughter, we double backed to Stormwall Gorge to explore, finding ourselves a weird place to come back to when we find something to put in the hole by these ruins. There, we met Hiravias, at which point this section ends with us deciding on how to level him.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 8: Beneath Caed Nua to Floor 5 and to Dyrwood
This was a bit of a fun time. We talked about Tarisland for a bit, the WoW Rip Off. Yes. Everyone hates Teemo. Accept and embrace this fact. I also learned that the next game brings our party size down to five, which I have mixed feelings about. Guess we'll find out in 20 years when I finally get to Pillars 2. Look, I'm slow.
Anyway, we got through floors 3 through 5 of the Endless Paths, beating a drake and many, many Not Kobolds. We picked up some levels, some bounties, and then passed through Stormwall Gorge to Dyrford Village, where we picked up even more quests and the Grieving Mother. We ended with trying to figure out what we should level her as -- and I think the answer is a dual wield murder machine.
The AI is starting to be a show its issues, and I'm going to be pretty happy with our choices. Our other goal is that once Darimere dings 7, we want to hire up some more mercenaries, because we can hire up to 8, so that means I'm going to fill our roster.

We push through some more floors beneath Caed Nua, deal with a slaver and then head east to recruit Sagani, a dwarf ranger from the arctic. And her fox. Her fox is more important, I think. Since we have a tank ranger already, I made her a pure archer. Let's NOT jump down that terrible hole by the way in the paths below. The ogre fights are a bit of a slog, but I think we might also have went too low. Ranger Tank is now Level 5, with our hero gun wizard Level 6. Let's get to time stamps.

Looks like there's no follow up to dealing with the curse, so we take a brief trip back to the Gilded Vale to rest. Also, we get a neat glamor shot on top of the inn. Look at our glorious team. After that, we explore the broken bridge, deal with some looters and then deal with the stuff beneath Caed Nua. We should hopefully get the Brighthollow or whatever built so we can rest at Caed Nua for free while clearing the paths below. It's been a pretty good trip so far! Let's look at time stamps.

Pillars of Eternity 1, Part 5: Storming Raedric's
Here we are: Storming Raedric's. Revenge for all the people on the tree, even if there's no guarantee things turn out well for anyone. The keep is still building the path to the east at the start, so we have nothing else to really do. I'm pretty sure that the only reason we completed this fight in one attempt was thanks to our Ranger Tank friend and her lion.
Honestly, there are only two encounters that are of note -- the one with the ainimancer in the dungeon and then Raedric himself. The ainimancer fight is pretty much a push over with Danimere's single target damage nuking down the caster, while Durance's anti-undead skill basically won the fight. Raedric was a bit more touch and go, but I think it is a perfect example of real-time with pause at it's best. Combined with slow mode, the game's combat feels manageable and stylish.
I guess we're going to have to open up the map and see what's next when we come back to play some more. We start by swapping weapons for Eder and Serena (the Ranger Tank); Eder doesn't need the regen morningstar as much as she does. With both of our tanks having some HP regen, it's time to explore. Let's follow the time stamps.

We also got the team to Level 5, including Kana now having a chant that increases reload speed and ranged attack, so he might stick with his rifle instead of swapping to the greatsword. Eder can also now drag people to him, and Durance has third level spells.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Temple of Eothas
We apparently missed a sidequest at the Gilded Vale, so this video takes us through there. It's a nice little quest where we find out a guy is a jerk maybe possibly trying to be a better person, which seems to be the theme of the people of the Gilded Vale. We also finally got Durance working right.
I think the game is proving itself to be quite good. The bell puzzle isn't really much of a puzzle, especially if you can just find the required key, but you can follow along using the bookmarks if you get stuck.

Pillars of Eternity 1: Character Creation to Meeting the Priest
Pillars was recommended to me as a better spiritual successor to Neverwinter Nights/Baldur's Gate than Sword Coast Legends. I do like the lack of proficiencies required for armor and weapons, though the talents that boost Accuracy feel like defacto proficiencies. The voice acting is surprisingly good, same with the music. Remember the game released in 2015, so even the graphics are fine. But, I'm not a huge graphics person and I grade fairly easily. Combat felt very micro-heavy, but I made the mistake of assuming the AI button having the green swirl meant it was on.
We've got four characters at this point. Darimere is going to be a ranged damage dealer and crowd control, using a gun once we can find one to equip. Aloth will be a more traditional AoE wizard. Eder is a standard tank, while Durance is going to be a team buffer.
I will say that so far, this was an enjoyable experience. I did maybe make a few too many attempts on the bears. Anyway, to the time stamps. I'll put the link to the Sword Coast Legends playlist at the end of the video. I originally did try to edit that one part out where we take a brief intermission, but then YouTube hung up forever editing it. So, no more intermissions or editing.

Rage of Demons 3: Beholder to Elder Brain
Well. I had a lot of good will going in to Rage of Demons. The Beholder fight is a push over and too easy; the Elder Brain is just a mess of crowd control, adds, AoE void zones, and bad control all piling on to a terrible experience. And then... the expansion just ends.
You can skip Rage of Demons. Sword Coast Legends C+ ranking drops easily to C- for this disappointment of an expansion. But, hey. I finally built a damage based main character. This is it. This is the end of Sword Coast Legends. That's all folks.

Rage of Demons 2: Succubus Cave to Beholder Gems
We continue our run of Rage of Demons. We make some progress -- namely through the Succubus Caves/Grymsong Mines and then to the main story. Grymsong Mines shows us that Rage of Demons remains more difficult than Sword Coast Legends was, while the main story dungeons are difficult in a different way. Namely, after you recruit Drizzt as an NPC companion, you get the wonderful joy of having to use Hide to steal some eyes from beholder statues. Combined with needing a super high Spot Hidden/Search check. Trying to sub Cyanelle in for a rogue is clearly a problem. After Sword Coast Legends basically didn't care about your rogue skills, this was a bit of a harsh opening. Black Puddings are still a pain to fight, but once I swapped Cyanelle away from slashing weapons, things went easier.
The plot so far is fairly basic. A bunch of jerks in a Duregar outpost are asking us for favors, and now we have to go find a missing person. It turns out, they've been cornered by undead illithids. We learn that these illithids are working in the service of an elder brain that died a long time ago, and so we must find Drizzt, the only person to kill an elder brain, to stop it. Conveniently, Drizzt is hunting a beholder nearby. We go and find him, and now we have a friend. Good times.

Sword Coast Legends 21: Duregar Prison Escape
Here's where things start to come together game play wise, and fall apart narratively. No one cares about spoilers, but you're warned.
Ok. The game takes Brynn from you -- she's actually secretly been a succubus this entire time... which makes her personal quest super weird, but it does explain a lot of why Brynn seemed kind of.. hot for anyone and everyone. Because she was a lust demon, not Brynn. How sad. She's gone. No more ranger in the party.
The boss fight here is an Illithid with a dragon strafing us, along with duregar slave adds. It's actually a really good fight. It still has the problem a lot of these fights have -- they're a little long with bloated HP totals -- but that's a routine D&D problem.
Then, we find out: the designers seemed to forget the camp dialogue between these events. No one responds to the fact our friend Brynn has been dead this entire time. Just a huge, narrative miss. Anyway, time stamps below. Next time we should complete the main game and start Rage of Demons with a new character!

Sword Coast Legends 18: Act 3 Side Quests
Act 3 opens with a search of the Underdark and lots of side quests. First, we've got a person with a mind controlling mask of goodness, which we can't resolve quite yet. It's really weird that we have a mind control mask of good. Good usually can't mind control to being good. That's not how it works, so it is a neat thing to see. There's a lot of twisting rune pillars in this update.
I'll also say the combination puzzle is a neat, organic quest that rewards exploration and puzzle solving. The game actually rewards exploration, and I like that. I think I'm moving from neutral to positive on SCL. None of the bosses are interesting fights, so I don't call them out specifically. Just go to near the end of the associated chapter for the Kiln, Illydia's quest or Javen's quest.
We got a second rogue, so Larethar is now a death archer. The new rogue doesn't have an Archery tree, so he gets to dual wield flaming swords.

Sword Coast Legends 17: Evermoors to Defeat of Rhylfang
This is the end of Act 2! We fight some slimes. And some trolls! And some drow! And some spiders! And Rhylfang, the Demon Spider. Overall, except for the sudden time out to reduce our carrying capacity, the pacing of the Act 2 ending is pretty decent, though the Evermoors drag. We've got everyone to Level 13, I think, and Parthall to Level 14. He's probably going to always be about a level ahead.
The Rhylfang fight is notable because it is one of the few times I've had to reload. You can cheese it by defeating all of the adds by one and then spending time to recover. Even without a dedicated healer, Brynn, Javen and Parthall were able to top us off each time before we got the boss back down. That also meant Brynn's Hunter's Mark was off cooldown during the burn phase each time, which trivialized that phase.
Welcome to the Underdark and Act 3! We'll see what's next as we chase down some evil drow to try and save the world. You can skip the chapter "Post Crash Evermoors" to skip the initial crash, shopping and pick up at rescuing people from trolls. There's a lot of running around after the Troll Cave, but none of the fights are particularly interesting, so I just left it one giant chapter.

Sword Coast Legends 15: Just Some More Dungeon Crawl
We're so close to having everyone at 12. Once we're at 12 all across the board, we're going to sprint to the end. We've got a few to go, just Larethar, Illydia and Hommet. Still, so close.

Sword Coast Legends 14: Dungeon Crawl 2
So, some weird things in the new dungeon crawl. Like Bellamy is still available to use, so we included him. He's Level 7 now, if that matters. We'll do one more set of dungeon crawls to get the remaining Level 10 people Level 11. No time stamps. Nothing interesting here.
Sword Coast Legends 13: Recruiting a Tank Wizard and Debuff Paladin
We get what I hope/think are our last two characters in this section. We get Dalanir, a drow who disguised himself as Soronil. He has some special spells, like Debilitating Strike and Dimension Door, that make him a prime candidate to be a mage tank. Javen, the paladin of Helm, gets to wear a jaunty hat to pump his CHA so he can be a debuff greatsword Paladin. Too much time is spent tweaking builds and passing equipment around. I assume we're now in the rush to the end at the Underdark. Or the Enderdark.
At the Temple of Ghaunadaur, I don't even really know what the boss, if any, there was supposed to be. We're not going to be tracking individual leveling any more, since at this point, people are just building up their existing skills or picking up more of the same. Nothing super exciting going forward level wise after we show Dalanir and Javen's builds.
