Rid yourself of excuses. Excuses are only an attempt to feel ok about not accomplishing something. Whenever an excuse comes up like "I don't have time to exercise today," instead say to yourself "how can I find time to workout today?" This will force your brain to create solutions."

Kat Elton is an expert in helping those with chronic pain live full and fulfilling lives, regardless of their physical limitations. Having suffered from Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis Kat learned to cope with the difficult aspects of living with pain, such as uncertainty, disability, and lack of understanding. Kat has been in chronic pain for 46 years and uses it as a learning tool to help her evolve and help others find joy in their life regardless of what type of pain they are experiencing.
She gained so much first-hand experience for developing strategies for not letting pain stop her, and discipline for self-care to decrease her pain, Kat went on to become licenced in the field as an OT and worked one-on-one with clients for 15 years before retiring as an OT to write her books and focus on coaching and speaking.
Kat has earned her BA in Anthropology, MS in Occupational Therapy, She has taken extensive continuing training classes including a week long course in stress management/ stress resiliency at the Herbert Benson Institute Harvard Medical School, ETPS certification, Reiki Level 3, Biofeedback and numerous other O.T. related continuing education classes.
In this interview, Kat talks about chronic pain, the controversy surrounding opioid use/misuse and what people in chronic pain can do to live well with pain. Ashley and Kat also discuss is the core premise of Kat's second book, True Health The Inside Job, which is that true health is not the absence of disease, but instead reflected in your life.

Your Challenge:
Add more plants into your diet, preferably in the whole, natural state. Eat as many plants as you can. Add 5 extra servings of organic fruits to your diet every day for the next 7 days!
Ashley's Flourless Bread Recipe:
Ingredients:
1 cup / 135g sunflower seeds
½ cup / 90g flax seeds
½ cup / 65g hazelnuts
½ cup / 65g almonds
1 ½ cups / 145g cooked quinoa
2 Tbsp. chia seeds
4 Tbsp. psyllium seed husks (3 Tbsp. if using psyllium husk powder)
2 tsp. fine grain sea salt
3 Tbsp. melted coconut oil or ghee
1 ½ cups / 350ml water
For sweetness:
1 or 2 mashed bananas (more banana for sweetness)
1 diced apple or 1 can of mashed pineapple for sweetness
Optional: 1/2 cup dried blueberries, cranberries or raisins
Directions:
Combine all dry ingredients, stirring well. Whisk oil and water together in a measuring cup. Add this to the dry ingredients and mix very well until everything is completely soaked and dough becomes very thick.
Let sit out on the counter for at least 2 hours, or all day or overnight.
Mix in the cooked quinoa with the dough and put the mix in flexible silicon loaf pans. Only fill the pans so the bread is about 2-3 inches tall.
To ensure the dough is ready, it should retain its shape even when you pull the sides of the loaf pan away from it. Mix in a bit more water if the dough is too hard.
Preheat oven to 350°F / 175°C.
Place loaf pan in the oven on the middle rack, and bake for about 40 minutes. Watch bread to make sure it doesn't burn. Remove bread from loaf pan, place it upside down on a baking sheet and bake for another 30-40 minutes. Bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool completely before slicing.
You can toast the slices in a toaster oven or a regular oven and serve with ghee/coconut oil, cheese or nut butter!
Store bread in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for up to five days. Freezes well too – slice before freezing for quick and easy toast!
Be sure to drink a glass of water after eating a few slices. This flourless bread is FILLED with fiber and can cause constipation if you don't drink enough water!

We Can Take Control Of The Pain We Are Experiencing

Because of their chronic pain they are no longer able to enjoy life - they can't be active anymore, their sleep is affected, they suffer from the side-effects of pain medication, their relationships are affected, they worry about who will take care of them as they get older.
Breath work is a tool that anyone can use to take control of pain, even if their mobility is limited. Jennifer shares that she loves being able to help people take control of their lives again.
• Most people do not breathe to their full capacity and don't realize this can add to stress and pain levels. Simply learning to breathe the way we were meant to reduce stress and pain levels.
• When people suffer from chronic pain, the 'stress response' aka the fight-or-flight response persists in the body. This causes the nervous system to stay wound up. The nervous system becomes hypersensitive and creates more pain sensations than are necessary. We can take control of the fight-or-flight response by moving from doing shallow, chest breathing into deep slow breathing.
The breath is the one aspect of the fight-or-flight response we have control over. Deep slow breathing sends this message to the nervous system:
• slow the heart rate
• stop producing pain and stress hormones
• start producing relaxation hormones (which block pain hormones)
• relax the muscles
• start digesting
• divert blood and resources back to the immune system, reproductive system, internal organs
Breath work can have a powerful effect not only on stress levels but on pain levels. When chronic pain is present, the nervous system learns to detect smaller problems and send more than normal pain signals back to the brain. With persistent pain, the nerves can act as if normal sensations, like touch, are dangerous. Deep breathing counteracts these responses.
So, although it is not a cure for chronic pain, deep breathing impacts the nervous system and can take the edge off the pain and make life livable again.
Deep breathing also strengthens the diaphragm muscle. Studies have found that people with weak diaphragm muscles are at greater risk of developing back pain and may develop neck and shoulder pain too.
1) the breath is a tool we can use to reduce stress and pain levels - when we recognize the ways we are not breathing to our full capacity, e.g. shallow chest breathing, mouth breathing, fast breathing, only using limited parts of our torsos - we can re-establish our natural ability to breathe deeply
2) strengthening the diaphragm through deep breathing can help reduce back, neck, and shoulder pain
3) doing a 10-minute breathing practice daily is all it takes to make deep breathing a habit and can make a significant impact over time to stress and pain levels

Sherry teaches two lessons from her book during our interview:
1. Nature’s Principle – Nutrition that is most present in our life is what we need the most of. Air and water are the most primary life dependent nutrient. Vegetation (vegetables) are the third. Easier to obtain nuts, seeds and berries are next. Fruit and then animal protein is last. In the wild, we would rather find and cook an egg or a fish than kill, bleed, gut and skin or pluck a chicken or lamb.
If we had to live in nature we would eat much differently. If we think of the hierarchy of how we would eat if we depended on nature we would eat more of the foods that are easy to obtain and less of the foods that are harder to obtain.
2. The Lethal Recipe – How we are producing our food has to lead to a huge rise in “lifestyle” diseases. These diseases are directly from how we eat. Many foods in our grocery store are as processed as heroin or cocaine. It’s artificial, chemical, toxic and void of nutrition.
These foods are refined grains, sugars, oils, salts and chemicals. Also, dairy and soy products are often manipulated until they are unhealthy.
Through the process of making these packaged foods, they denature the nutrition, remove minerals and add addictive chemicals.
Many processed foods that contain these chemicals are what is causing food addiction.

Posture correction leads to the elimination of chronic pain. Brendan Ridings has had great success helping his clients relieve joint and muscle pain that even doctors were unable to help fix. In today’s interview Brendan shares why so many of us are suffering from chronic pain, why most of us need posture correction and what we can do to take matters into our own hands. Many of his clients have been able to utilize Brendan’s posture correction exercises to the point where they were able to avoid surgery!
Brendan Ridings graduated from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale with a Bachelor’s of Science focusing on Human Nutrition and Dietetics. While attaining his degree, Brendan won the 2007 WABDL World powerlifting championships, the 2008 and 2009 WABDL National Colligate Championships, and currently holds the IL bench press record and deadlift record in 2 weight classes.
Brendan went on to attain his Corrective Exercise Specialty from The National Academy of Sports Medicine. Brendan teaches people how to easily reverse chronic pain and correct their posture using simple biomechanics, exercise and a back support device he invented. Poor posture has a stronger correlation to lowered life expectancy than smoking. The majority of osteoarthritis and chronic pain conditions are actually chronic poor posture and bad movement patterns resulting from these postures. Brendan provides simple, actionable steps to feel better, look better, and prevent pain.
Brendan Ridings shares that poor postural mechanics resulting from the 9+ hours spent sitting has even distorted breathing patterns. We have adopted chest breathing which is shallow and rapid, this signals the body to release cortisol and adrenaline, which creates stressful feelings and chemistry.
Here’s What You’ll Discover:
A lengthened muscle from slouching becomes weakened.
Reciprocal inhibition is when the nervous system shuts down around elongated muscle from slouching making it harder for us to activate good muscle patterns and posture!
Brendan teaches exercises we can all do to help reverse bad posture.
Bad posture leads to chronic pain and can wear down joints unevenly.
Health AH-HA Moment:
Poor posture leads to increased stress hormone levels and decreased testosterone! Likewise, 4 minutes in a “power posture” decrease stress hormones and increase testosterone!
Your Challenge:
Do these three exercises below:
1. Exercise:
Good Neuro Muscular Activity:
Hands outstretched to sides, turn palms to the ceiling. This activates the between the shoulder blades that are normally over stretched muscles from slouching.
2. Exercise:
Lay on floor on back
Squeeze butt so hips come off floor a little
Squeeze abs 20% and bring the bottom of rib care a little closer to the pelvis.
This is a neutral spine that helps reactivate your core.
3. Exercise:
To lower stress levels and the stress hormone:
Sit down
Pull shoulder blades back
pull your head back into a neutral position
Place hands on your thighs with palms facing down.
Take a couple of deep breaths, slightly deeper than normal, through the nose and out of the mouth.
Turn palms up to face the ceiling.
Sit up straight and pull your shoulder blades back, now focus on drawing the air into your belly or diaphragm.
Take another couple of deep breaths, slightly deeper than normal, through the nose and out of the mouth.
Notice it’s easier to breath when your palms face upwards.
You will see after 1 minute, you already have a more relaxed feeling in your body. Diaphragm breathing helps to relax the body, improve oxygenation, and even stimulate serotonin. Since stress is linked to almost all medical conditions, this is something you can do daily, or when feeling stressed to counteract the harsh effects of chronic stress.
Do this daily for 2 minutes to relax. Use it before bed and when at the office.

Deep Breathing | The Learn True Health Podcast #36

Deep Breathing
Dr. Heidi describes the anatomy of the lungs. At the base of the lungs, down by our belly, is where there is the most amount of blood pulled for O2 exchanged. When we do not breathe correctly, our body cannot get the right amount of O2.
Oxygen is how we digest! If you are not getting enough O2 your body cannot do anything else optimally. Literally optimal health cannot be achieved if we are not breathing correctly. And most of us are NOT breathing correctly!
The immune system is within our sinuses and throat to aid us in fighting off germs that want to enter our lungs. Our nasal passages moisten and warm the air which protects the lungs.
It’s best to breath in through the nose.
When we flex our diaphragm, we are pushing the organs in our belly down and out. By breathing deeply we are also increasing our digestion and healthy movement of our intestines.
Proper Full Deep Breath:
Step One: Breath in through the nose
Step Two: Breathe into the belly, feel the belly push outwards and diaphragm flex downwards.
Step three: Feel the sides of your ribs expand
Step Four: Firm up your belly and complete your inhale by filling the upper part of the lungs by the collar bones.
Deep breath on an 8 count:
Walking breathing meditation.
Breathe in fully for 8 seconds. Hold for 8 seconds. Exhale for 8 seconds.
Every time you are at a stop light, practices this deep breathing technique.
Take a couple of full deep 8 count breaths before you begin to eat. This will aid in digestion.
Alternate Nostril Breathing:
Right finger over left nostril, inhale. Switch to left finger over right nostril. Exhale. Switch and repeat for 10. Then switch sides.
The nervous system controls breathing and breathing controls NS. The vagus nerve runs down the chest. Stimulating the vasovagal nerve lowers heart rate and blood pressure. We can intentionally stimulate that nerve to lower blood pressure and calm the body.
Rib stretching:
Deep breath with hands on sides of ribs.
hold breath and gently squeeze ribs downward.
Exhale.
The Cleansing Breath:
Deep full inhale
Purse lips without poofing cheeks out
Blow multiple times like you are trying to blow candles out until your lungs are empty.
Take a full deep breath
This forces the lungs to get out all stale air, cleanses the lungs.

Why do we yawn?
Why are we told to breath into a paper bag when we have a panic attack?
Deep breath increases energy!
We lose water when we breathe so drink more water when doing breathing exercises!
Proper deep breathing increases immune health by pumping lymph!

Deep breathing decreases pain and increases mood!

Dr. Heidi Semanie is back on the show to teach us things we didn’t know about vitamin D! Every major aspect of your health is influenced by D.
It’s common knowledge that vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin because our body uses the sunshine to make it. And in the winter, we can suffer from Seasonal Affectiveness Disorder (S.A.D.), or low D levels, which are linked to depression.
