This is NOT the norm for building a gravel driveway or pad. Or is it?? Or can it be? Down here in Southern Illinois we are in red clay country big time. So there are some principles relating to building a gravel driveway or a gravel pad that can be used to save money on a gravel drive. The standard if you ask most excavators is you'd use large stone as a base layer, and then small stone on top. Some use road fabric and some do not. When we built our near mile long gravel driveway and new home gravel pad I had many conversations with our excavator, who's had probably 45 years of experience building government projects, DNR projects, and building public roads as well. There are pro's and con's to every method. If you can get your drive good and compacted and shaped to remove water (either a crown in the middle, or the water runs across the road on an incline from one side to the other) then your gravel will dry quickly after a rain and greatly reduce the chances of the dirt pumping from your vehicles. Culvert pipes are also a must to keep your gravel road dry. But even still you don't want any 'flat' spots where water just soaks in through your gravel. Ideally a layer of base stone and then 6 inches of small stone is what most excavators would do or recommend. But in this case I did not think that was necessary since we already had a pre existing 'rough' gravel drive and 2 years of machines driving over it and compacting it. Today I'll be using my KIOTI NS6010 and ABI Attachments TR3 tractor rake to get this new gravel drive and gravel pad completed. NOV 26, 2023! It's been a bit since we did an update on our Southern Illinois VRBO cabin build update so join us for an up to the minute update to see how the progress is coming along. In today's update we'll join Sharon on Thanksgiving weekend as she puts in a full 4 day weekend of work on her ongoing DIY rustic cabin projects and get a hands on, behind the scenes look at how she builds the DIY fireplace mantel and the DIY rustic bathroom vanity and sink, by using a custom cut Pecan slab for the DIY bathroom vanity counter. The DIY fireplace mantel is now ready for stone, as she has the concrete board all in place. She had to order the synthetic stone so it won't be in for another week or so, but I am pretty excited to see how that DIY fireplace mantel setup turns out! We did get the custom Red Cedar fireplace mantel top in place though, and while it does look a little awkward now, I think once she gets the stone and mortar on it will make it really pop! Also during our fall food plot updates I will tell you some deer hunting stories, but with video to back them up! Yep, last season I arrowed a 180" massive Southern Illinois buck, that by all accounts should be on my wall! But it was the toughest buck I've ever seen, not only surviving my neighbor arrowing him the night before, but surviving my one lung and likely liver shot the very next day!! Yep, this is generally my kind of luck in life, in general, which is why I continue working so hard to succeed at things in life! Nothing ever comes easy! Going to be a busy AND PRODUCTIVE WEEK! Sharon is on vacation so that means I WILL BE WORKING ALL WEEK! LOL. Join us for DAY 5 of Sharon's vacation from work, although she will be working full time on our VRBO cabin project to try and make up for lost time to get this beautiful Southern Illinois home finished! And of course that means that I will have supervision all week so that I can't get out of too much work! Seriously though it is time to kick this vrbo cabin into full gear to get it completely finished and on the market to sell! Needless to say that our expectations were never met on this new home construction as it has been nearly 2 years in the making with TONS of letdowns.. Week after week, month after month, mystery bill after mystery bill.. But now that it is nearly done the ball is in OUR COURT NOW! And that means WORKING OVERTIME! So for DAY 5 Sharon will be working inside of the cabin by sanding and staining cabinets and doors to give the rustic, yet modern inside some contrast since all of the walls are knotty pine, aka car siding, with a light color wood texture. And I will be working on the outside working on fixing some major water erosion and water runoff issues, trenching some buried perforated drain tiles, trenching the gutters, working the new gravel drivway that needs to be totally re done, re leveled and re graded, and much more. Oh, and we finally get to fill a dumpster after nearly 2 years of trash build up on this new home construction! So today I'll be using my KIOTI NS6010 for buying new drain tiles, grading out an entire hillside, filling in low spots, final grading with my ABI Attachment TR3 tractor rake, planting grass, leveling ditches for water erosion and runoff and then finishing it off with some leftover straw from the last grass planting. Then we'll get an AFTER look after about a half inch of rain to see how the laser level and ditch grading did, as well as how well I graded the entire hillside to mitigate water erosion and runoff! This tractor attachment is NO JOKE! Join me for today's #shorts video of a near live time tractor land management/land improvement project as I tackle a very steep hillside on our Southern Illinois farm cabin build site. I'll be using my KIOTI NS6010 and my ABI ATTACHMENTS TR3 TRACTOR RAKE to tame, subdue and grade out a very rough and steep hillside on our Southern Illinois farm. While using a tractor loader can be beneficial, there is no doubt that this ABI attachments TR3 tractor rake is a game changer! Notice how I can knock down and level steep humps and holes in reverse with the TR3 and not have to risk traversing them before they get leveled with the tractor. If you were to try to back drag these steep humps and holes you could be at risk of flipping or rolling your tractor. This is why I much prefer letting the TR3 tackle those steep spots and level them before any of my tractor tires hit them and risk turning the tractor over! Too much rain runoff! It is time to think outside the box for today's project video! In this video, we'll show you how to transform chaos into order with our mini excavator and heavy duty brush cutter attachment. The mini excavator brush cutter attachment is a great tool for solving small excavating problems in a quick and efficient manner. In this video, we'll show you how to use the brush cutter to clear a path in a 15' jungle, and transform chaos into order in a matter of minutes! In about 7 mins flat! In this spot along our gravel driveway ditch there are several Walnut trees that have started dropping Walnuts. Sharon has been collecting the Walnuts for us so she asked me to clear everything below the Walnut trees. So I took out the Bobcat e42 r2 series mini excavator and 42" construction attachments HD brush cutter (will cut up to 6 inch material) and cleared this severely overgrown ditch area complete with briars, trees and bushes, and some of the trees were 15' high and 3 to 4 inches at the base. Join me for a quick video today as I hop in one of the newly released KIOTI TL750 Compact track loader, aka skid steer, for test drive in some dirt. I recently got to see one in action in the field as our new neighboring property owner just bought one. He was using a forestry mulcher to clear trees to create some new roads through the woods, a new homesite clearing as well as cutting a new driveway, installing a culvert pipe and doing some dirt work with a dirt bucket. I asked him how he was liking the new KIOTI TL750 skid steer and he was impressed with the build and said it was built very heavy duty, and so far he has enjoyed operating it. Sharon here! It's almost fall and the hickory nuts on our wooded homestead are just starting to drop. The race is on to find them before the squirrels and chipmunks do! Take a ride with me as take you deep in the woods and show you some beautiful nature scenery and teach you what I learned (the hard way) about the different types of hickory's we have on our property. Oh, and also on today's wooded adventure I will be picking some black walnuts, some passion fruits, aka 'Maypops' and some Red Oak acorns and start to prepare them for human consumption and use! I've been learning a lot about maximizing the usefulness of our Southern Illinois property so come along and join me for the learning adventure and fresh air!
