How DNA Caught The Golden State Killer ft. Barbara Rae-Venter & Tom Myers Part 1
In the world of true crime, new technologies and investigative techniques often played a crucial role in solving crimes. Genetic genealogy, in recent years, helped investigators crack cases. In this episode of All Things Crime, Jared Bradley is joined by Barbara Rae-Venter and Tom Myers as they delve into the world of DNA and its role in capturing the Golden State Killer.
Barbara Rae-Venter shares the story of her quest to trace her family history to Scotland, which led her to discover DNA testing and connections with adoptees seeking relatives.
Tom Myers also sheds light on the process of using DNA to identify perpetrators and victims. Their work extended to solving the Bear Brook Four case in New Hampshire, where the killer employed aliases and stole identities to leave an unknown trail. Through DNA analysis and investigation, the team identified victims and the perpetrator.
This episode discusses that even rootless hair, believed to yield no nuclear DNA, can provide vital clues in solving crimes. Additionally, use of aerial photography to locate burial sites and the challenges posed by introduction of tiny DNA fragments during hair growth are explored, revealing the techniques used to crack these complex cases.
Barbara Rae-Venter is a New Zealand-born American genetic genealogist, biologist, author of the book “I Know Who You Are”, and retired patent attorney best known for her work helping police and investigators identify Joseph James DeAngelo as the Golden State Killer. She is also the Founder of Firebird Forensics Company, a non-profit company that focuses on assisting law enforcement in identifying suspects in violent crimes and identifying unidentified human remains.
Tom Myers is a retired FBI ERT leader, and has had an extensive background in law enforcement. He has been a CSI extraordinaire and a ranger.

Psychology of Serial Killers Scott Bonn Part 1
Dr. Scott Bonn is a criminologist, podcast host, TV commentator, public speaker, and author of the best-selling popular culture book Why We Love Serial Killers: The Curious Appeal of the World’s Most Savage Murderers. He provides expert commentary and analysis for a number of high-profile true crime TV shows and documentaries on A&E, Discovery Network, Oxygen, Investigation Discovery, and Travel Channel.
Serial killers have long captivated the public's imagination, leaving us engrossed in the dark recesses of their twisted minds. In this episode of All Things Crime, Jared Bradley is joined by criminologist and serial killer expert, Dr. Scott Bonn, to unpack the psychology behind these disturbing individuals.
Contrary to popular belief, the majority of serial killers are not mentally ill but rather fall into the categories of psychopath or sociopath, which are characterized by antisocial personality disorders. Psychopaths, unlike sociopaths, lack the ability to feel a normal range of emotions and empathy. Their unflappable nature makes them particularly dangerous and difficult to identify.
Drawing from real-life cases, the episode explores the chilling similarities between a high-profile coworker currently facing trial for mass murder and notorious serial killer Dennis Rader, also known as BTK. Both individuals share backgrounds in criminal justice, a propensity for stalking, and a fixation on targeting women.
Delving deeper into the topic, Dr. Scott also sheds light on the various motivations that drive serial killers. Ranging from sexual gratification to missions and responses to perceived higher powers or authorities, these individuals operate on psychological and visceral hunger rather than typical emotions associated with homicide. They exhibit a calculated approach, carefully planning their crimes and demonstrating a cooling-off period between killings.
Ultimately, this episode offers listeners a fascinating glimpse into the minds of serial killers. By understanding the psychological factors at play, we gain valuable insight into their motivations and behaviors.
Takeaways
1. Most serial killers have antisocial disorders.
2. Serial killers act on self-desire.
3. Knowing the killer's motives can prevent violence.

Psychology of Serial Killers Scott Bonn Part 2
In Part 2 of our series on the Psychology of Serial Killers, we dive deeper into the dark minds of these individuals while exploring the impact of media and technology on our society.
In this episode, Dr. Scott Bonn challenges the notion that technology and media are inherently good or bad, emphasizing that it's how we use them that truly matters. From the almost extinction of comic books in the 1950s to the rise of social media, Dr. Scott explores the influence of these mediums and urges listeners to be more empathetic and considerate of the impact their actions can have on others.
Delving into the psychology of serial killers, Dr. Scott also unravels the cold and calculating mindset of individuals like Dennis Raider, better known as BTK, who believes his actions are God's work and feels no remorse. Drawing parallels between psychopathic behavior and successful individuals in high-powered positions, Bonn sheds light on the predatory nature of these individuals.
Throughout the episode, listeners will gain insight into the behaviors and motivations of infamous serial killers such as Ted Bundy and Richard Ramirez, understanding the concept of adaptability and fearlessness, as well as the thrill-seeking nature of these individuals.
While serial killers may be on the decline due to advancements in detection and profiling, Bonn highlights the rise in mass public shootings, questioning the impact of social media and technology on our ability to connect with the world around us.

Overcoming Sadistic Torture and Abuse ft. Jimmi Toro Pt. 5
In this series finale, host Jared Bradley and guest Jimmi Toro unpack the widespread issue of unaddressed trauma in society and its healing importance. Jimmi also highlights the critical role of mothers in shielding children from predators and discusses symbolism in art as a means to process trauma.
Both Jared and Jimmi acknowledge that trauma's physical effects are well known; stress can profoundly impact the body. However, they emphasize that extreme trauma can lead to even harsher consequences. The hormonal response to such events can cause a dramatic bodily reaction, preparing for fight, flight, or even freeze.
Interestingly, Jimmi sheds light on the potential for transformative healing from trauma. He explains the possibility of a metaphorical time travel, altering past experiences to release stored trauma, which could trigger a swift recovery.
Yet, as Jimmi warns, the journey is not always smooth. Lingering trauma and recurring anxiety can progressively impact physical health. Hence, he encourages listeners to acknowledge the physical toll of trauma and seek help when required.
In conclusion, this insightful episode with Jared and Jimmi emphasizes the physical toll of trauma and the crucial need for addressing such experiences to prevent lasting damage. Jimmi's personal journey underscores that healing is challenging yet achievable, requiring a mental voyage into past traumas. But the result of this strenuous process can be transformative and bring about a quick path to recovery.

In part four of this series, Jared and Jimmi talk about using the M-Vac system to collect DNA evidence in criminal investigations. They also discuss the trauma that children can experience from crimes like kidnapping and abuse, and recommend understanding the effects of trauma and initiating the healing process.
One of the most powerful tools in healing from trauma is hope and imagination. Providing hope to a child who has experienced trauma can be a game-changer. By giving them a sense of control and agency, they are able to reimagine their experience and find a way to feel safe.
It is also important to note that trauma affects not just the physical and mental aspects of a person, but also their spiritual being. As Jimmi Toro discusses, we are spiritual beings having a physical experience. When we keep this in mind, we can tap into a deeper part of ourselves that is untouchable by trauma. Imagination also plays a crucial role in healing from trauma.

Overcoming Sadistic Torture and Abuse ft. Jimmi Toro Pt. 2
In the second part of this series, Jimmi shared his survivor story of ritual abuse and discusses different methods of healing from trauma. He also touch on the prevalence of child abuse and predators, and the importance of believing children when they report abuse.
Despite exploring various therapies such as talk therapy, yoga, and tapping, the most potent approach was guiding his younger self to self-rescue amidst traumatic events. This process consisted of recognizing the emotions tied to the trauma, and then locating his younger self within that event. Jimmi's aim was not to save the child himself, but to empower the child to do so.
Although the method has its challenges, such as the emotional toll of revisiting trauma and the unknown number of traumatic memories, Jimmi Toro insists the process was worth it for the healing it brought him.
Overall, this episode delivers a hopeful and empowering message for childhood trauma survivors. It reinforces that healing is attainable and survivors can seize control of their own healing process. Through empowerment and action, survivors can begin reclaiming their lives.

Overcoming Sadistic Torture and Abuse ft. Jimmi Toro Pt. 3
In the third part of this series, Jared and Jimmi talk about the warped logic in some pedophiles' actions, especially within satanic cults, where child abuse is an act of rebellion against God due to children's perceived purity. Pedophiles, driven by their addiction to sexual gratification, intentionally choose victims who are most defenseless – those who are unable to retaliate or grasp the extent of the abuse they're enduring. This makes them the ultimate cowards!
Alarming statistics suggest that many pedophiles remain uncaught, pointing to a potential hidden danger within communities. Thus, awareness about this issue is crucial. To counteract this threat, Jimmi suggests starting a community group to increase awareness and liaising with legal authorities, therapists, and other organizations to protect children. Knowledge of the tactics used by pedophiles, like online grooming or parties, is vital.
In summary, the episode emphasizes the deliberate targeting of children by pedophiles, and the collective responsibility to protect them. By raising awareness, working with professionals, and understanding predator tactics, these crimes can be prevented, creating a safer society.

Lindsey Wade unravels the complexities of the investigation, she reveals how the persistence of law enforcement and the strategic use of DNA evidence ultimately lead to the identification of the perpetrator and the resolution of a heinous crime.
These gripping narratives serve as powerful reminders of the unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of justice required in solving high-profile cases. Ret. Det. Lindsey Wade's insights shed light on the crucial role DNA analysis plays in unraveling mysteries, bringing closure to victims and their families, and ensuring that no crime goes unpunished.

Investigating Your Worst Nightmares - Lindsey Wade Part 2
In the second episode of the series, Ret. Det. Lindsey Wade rejoins Jared Bradley to delve further into the intricacies of criminal investigations. Her career, ignited by personal experiences and the notorious Ted Bundy case, led her to specialize in solving cold cases through DNA analysis. Wade’s stories illuminate her deep-seated passion for justice and relentless pursuit of truth.
The conversation revolves around the pivotal role of the CODIS database. Despite its critical importance, a significant challenge law enforcement faces is the limited number of DNA profiles within the system. Wade advocates for mandatory DNA collection from all convicts to bridge this gap. Even as she acknowledges the potential of investigative genetic genealogy, she emphasizes that efforts should primarily be focused on maximizing the existing CODIS system's efficacy.
Wade also shares insights on criminal behavior patterns, noting that individuals often commit a range of offenses. This increases the likelihood of apprehension for non-violent crimes, such as burglary or drug possession.

Kristian Flood - Immigration, Crime and Leadership in New York Part 4
Det. Kristian Flood and Jared Bradley return for the finale of this podcast series. They continue to discuss several criminal cases including the mysterious disappearance of Andrea Caruth. The episode details the steps the police have taken to investigate the case, including interviews and searches, as well as a hospital canvas and extended search to nearby states.
In January of 2016, the body of Andrea Caruth was found in a closet in the basement of her home in New York. On the day of the murder, Andrea had gone to confront her father about the money he had been taking from her. It was then that her father William Caruth killed her. After an investigation, William was arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter. He was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The motive for the killing was found out to be financial. William had been living off of his daughter and had been trying to squeeze money from her. It was a heartbreaking case, as William had killed his own daughter.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of DNA evidence in criminal investigations. It also serves as a reminder of the dedication and hard work of the investigators involved in the case. Without their diligence, the perpetrator may have never been found and justice may never have been served.
This case also serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of financial desperation and greed. William had been living off of his daughter and had been trying to squeeze money from her. In the end, his actions cost him his freedom and his daughter's life.
No matter the motive, murder is a heinous crime and should never be taken lightly. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of justice and the consequences of taking the law into one's own hands. No one should ever be allowed to get away with taking another person's life, no matter the motive.
Det. Kristian Flood is a retired First Grade Investigator at NYPD with 20+ years of experience in law enforcement with expertise in hostage negotiation, criminal investigations, public safety, law enforcement, and interrogation.
Takeaways
1. DNA evidence is critical for investigations.
2. Listen to the concerns of citizens.
3. Thorough investigation and dedication are important.

Father of Murdered Daughter Discusses Her Case Part 2
In part 2 of this episode, host Jared Bradley continues to interview Eddie Cutrer, father of murder victim Angela Strussion. They continue to discuss the circumstances surrounding the murder, the investigation, and the progress made in the case.
Crime remains an unsolved mystery in many cases, even after years of investigation. This is the unfortunate reality for the family of Tom and Angela Strussion, who were murdered in their own home in Belmont County, Ohio, over a year and a half ago. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and the family's own investigation, the perpetrators remain unknown.
The Strussion were found dead in their home, having been shot and the house set on fire. The family believes that Tom's habit of carrying large sums of money with him may have been a factor in the crime, as it is possible that the perpetrators were aware of this and sought to take advantage of it. However, this is only speculation, as no concrete evidence has been found to support this theory.
Eddie and the family have gone to great lengths to try to find answers, including billboards with Crime Stoppers, podcasts, and other forms of outreach. Unfortunately, these efforts have not yielded any leads, with only eight calls on the Crime Stoppers billboards.
The Strussion's case is a stark reminder of how difficult it can be to solve a crime, even with the best intentions. It is a reminder that we must always remain vigilant and do our best to help law enforcement bring criminals to justice. We must also remember the victims and their families, and do our best to support them in their search for answers.
Note: Listeners are encouraged to come forward with any information they have that may help solve the case.

2. Enjoy your loved ones while you can.
3. You never stop being a parent.

Father of Murdered Daughter Discusses Her Case Part 1
In this episode of All Things Crime, host Jared Bradley interviews Eddie Cutrer, the parent of a homicide victim whose case remains unsolved. Eddie shares memories of his daughter and son-in-law, talks about their case, and highlights the challenges of dealing with the loss of a loved one. Through this emotional and touching interview, listeners gain insight into how families cope with the aftermath of violent crime and the importance of bringing justice to victims and their loved ones.
DNA evidence is a powerful tool in the fight against crime. It can provide investigators with the ability to identify suspects, link crimes to individuals, and even exonerate those who have been wrongfully accused. When it comes to solving crimes, DNA evidence can be invaluable.
In the case of Eddie Cutrer, his daughter, and son-in-law were murdered in 2021. Despite the fact that their case is still unsolved, DNA evidence was able to provide some clues. After the M-VAC system was used to collect DNA from a doorknob, investigators were able to determine that there was not enough DNA to create a full profile. However, the DNA that was collected was enough to provide investigators with leads that could potentially help them solve the case.
DNA evidence can also be used to exonerate individuals who have been wrongfully convicted. In many cases, DNA evidence has been used to overturn convictions and free innocent people from prison. In some cases, DNA evidence has been the only way to prove that a person was wrongfully convicted.
In conclusion, DNA evidence can be an invaluable tool in the fight against crime. It can provide investigators with the ability to identify suspects, link crimes to individuals, and even exonerate those who have been wrongfully accused. DNA evidence has been used to solve countless crimes and exonerate innocent people. It is a powerful tool that should not be underestimated.
Takeaways
1. DNA evidence can help solve crimes.
2. Crime destroys families.
3. Remember the victims and honor their memory.

Kristian Flood - Immigration, Crime and Leadership in New York Part 3
Det. Kristian Flood and Jared Bradley return for part 3 of this podcast series to discuss the cyclical nature of crime and how we are currently in a period where weak leadership at the top is creating difficult conditions for workers at the bottom–causing many people to leave the city, which ultimately weakens everything else.
Crime is escalating rapidly, and it is a sad reality that affects us all. Everywhere we look, we are seeing increases in crime, and it is becoming a major issue. It is hard to ignore the fact that crime is on the rise, and it is a cycle that has been repeating itself for years. The cycle starts with strong men creating good times, which then leads to weak men creating hard times. We are currently in the weak men creating hard times era, and the real hard times have yet to hit.
The politicians at the top are making policies that reverberate all the way down to the bottom. This creates conditions that are so difficult for those at the bottom that many people simply give up and move to stronger areas. This weakens everything else, and it is a sign of the times when people have to take care of themselves.
The problem is further compounded by the fact that 5 million people have come into the country illegally in the last two years. The majority of these people are young, working-age men, and when they get here, they may not find the streets paved with gold. This could lead to more carjackings, robberies, and other crimes.
It is clear that crime is escalating rapidly, and it is a problem that needs to be addressed. We need to take action and find solutions that will help to reduce crime and make our communities safer. We need to take a stand and make sure that those in power are held accountable for their actions and that the weak men creating hard times are no longer in charge.
Det. Kristian Flood is a retired First Grade Investigator at NYPD with 20+ years of experience in law enforcement with expertise in hostage negotiation, criminal investigations, public safety, law enforcement, and interrogation.
Takeaways
1. Crime is escalating rapidly.
2. Fight crime with justice.
3. Immigrants often face discrimination.

Kristian Flood - Immigration, Crime and Leadership in New York Part 2
In part 2 of this podcast series, Det. Kristian Flood joins Jared Bradley and examines rising crime, its root causes, and the victims it affects. They also discuss topics like Somalis entering the US in the early 2000s, migrants coming to America to be Americans, and issues with cities like New York and San Francisco.
Unfortunately, in recent years, many states have implemented laws and policies that have unintentionally incentivized crime. These policies have included bail reform laws, raising the age of criminal responsibility, and plea deals that often go against the victims of the crime. This incentivization of crime has had serious consequences.
One of the most significant consequences of incentivizing crime is the re-victimization of victims. When plea deals are made without the knowledge or consent of the victim, or when crimes are downplayed, victims are revictimized and not taken seriously. This can be incredibly damaging to victims and can lead to long-term psychological and emotional trauma.
Another consequence of incentivizing crime is leading to an increase in crime and violence. When criminals are not held accountable for their actions and are not given harsh punishments, they are more likely to commit more crimes. This can lead to an increase in homicides, robberies, and other violent crimes.
In order to prevent these consequences, states must take the necessary steps to protect citizens and show respect and appreciation for law enforcement. Only then can we prevent tragedy from occurring.
Det. Kristian Flood is a retired First Grade Investigator at NYPD with 20+ years of experience in law enforcement with expertise in hostage negotiation, criminal investigations, public safety, law enforcement, and interrogation.
Takeaways
1. Personal choice is key.
2. Crime unchecked leads to tragedy.
3. Incentivizing crime has consequences.

Kristian Flood - Immigration, Crime and Leadership in New York Part 1
Det. Kristian Flood is a retired First Grade Investigator at NYPD with 20+ years of experience in law enforcement with expertise in hostage negotiation, criminal investigations, public safety, law enforcement, and interrogation. In this podcast series, Det. Kristian Flood joins Jared Bradley and covers a range of topics–including Det. Flood's experience growing up in New York, the restrictions imposed during the pandemic, and the differences between law enforcement in New York and Florida.
The recent influx of migrants to the United States has created a significant strain on the resources of many cities, particularly New York City. This strain has been exacerbated by the fact that many of the migrants are coming to the US without any resources or means of support. This has led to an entitlement mentality, where migrants expect the US to provide them with food, shelter, and other basic necessities without having to work or contribute to the country in any way.
Unfortunately, the city has not been able to provide adequate resources for the migrants, leading to overcrowding and a lack of basic amenities. This has been further compounded by the fact that the federal government has not provided sufficient funding to address the issue.
Ultimately, it is important to remember that the US is a nation of immigrants and that it has always been a place of refuge and hope for those seeking a better life. However, it is also important to remember that those seeking refuge must do so in a way that is respectful and responsible. They must not be allowed to take advantage of the US’s generosity and resources. The US must take steps to ensure that migrants are properly vetted and that resources are allocated in a way that is fair and equitable. Only then can the US remain a beacon of freedom and opportunity for all.
Takeaways
1. Entitlement mentality causes chaos.
2. The influx of migrants must be addressed.
3. Seek help legally.

Sgt. Celestina Rossi and Det. Fadi Rizk - Solving the Lesia Jackson Murder Part 2
In part 2 of this series, Sgt. Celestina Rossi and Det. Fadi Rizk shares their thoughts about the pain that must have been felt by the family of Lesia Jackson and the guilt they must have felt for leaving the swimming pool during the argument causing her death.
It is often said that forgiveness is the key to unlocking inner peace and healing. It is a powerful emotion and a difficult process to go through. When a tragedy occurs, such as the murder of a family member, it can be difficult to forgive and move on. It can be even more difficult when the family believes that the perpetrator has escaped justice for years. This was the case for the family of Lesia, who was murdered 43 years ago.
The family of Lesia had two brothers who were at the swimming pool when the tragedy occurred. It is believed that they had an argument with Lesia and left, leaving her alone. For 43 years, they have carried the guilt of not being there to protect her, and have not done any interviews since. It is understandable why they would feel so much guilt and remorse, and why they would not want to speak about it as it was a painful reminder of the tragedy that happened.
The family had gone through the process of forgiving and moving on, but the news of the real perpetrator being found brought back all their pain and guilt. Forgiveness is an important part of healing and moving on, but it is not an easy process. It takes time, and it is often difficult to forgive when it feels like justice has not been served.
Sgt. Celestina Rossi is a Crime Scene Investigator at Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Conroe, Texas with over 21 years of law enforcement experience. She is also the President of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts. Meanwhile, Detective Fadi Rizk is also an officer at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and is a member of the Cold Case Squad, responsible for all cold case investigations assisting MCSO detectives, Country and District Attorneys, as well as other law enforcement agencies.

Sgt. Celestina Rossi and Det. Fadi Rizk - Solving the Lesia Jackson Murder Part 1
In this podcast series, Sgt. Celestina Rossi and Detective Fazi Rizk join Jared Bradley to talk about a recently solved cold case involving the abduction and murder of then-12-year-old Lesia Jackson in 1979. They discuss their investigative work on the case and shared details on the events leading up to her abduction and subsequent murder, and how M-Vac helped in finally solving the case 43 years later.
DNA technology has come a long way since Lesia Jackson's murder in 1979. At the time, DNA was not an investigative tool, and the case went cold for many years. However, with the advancement of DNA technology, it has become a powerful investigative tool that can help solve crimes.
DNA collection machines like the M-Vac Systems helped to solve many cases that would have otherwise gone unsolved. It is an invaluable and powerful tool that can help law enforcement bring justice to victims. However, it is important to remember that it is not a panacea and that it is only one part of the investigative process.
Takeaways
1. DNA technology is a powerful investigative tool.
2. Crime still lurks in rural areas.
3. Remain vigilant and alert in public.

Dr. Lee Mellor - Self-Inflicted Wounds and Societal Lockdowns Part 4
Dr. Lee Mellor and Jared Bradley return for the finale of this series. Specifically, to talk about how social media has had a negative effect on people's attention span, mental health, and how it stimulates unnecessary gossip and vanity rather than meaningful conversations.
In today's world, it is easy to become isolated and lose touch with reality. Social media, the internet, and technology can all be used to create a sense of disconnection from the real world. This can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
One way to unplug and reconnect to those around you is to limit phone use in situations where it is not necessary. This will help to ensure that individuals are able to focus on the conversations and activities around them and create meaningful connections.
It is important to remember that taking the time to unplug and reconnect does not have to be a chore. It can be as simple as taking a walk in nature or playing a board game with family and friends.
By taking the time to engage in meaningful conversations and activities, individuals can help to create a more connected world.
Dr. Lee Mellor is the author of the bestselling book “Cold North Killers: Canadian Serial Murder”. He is also a criminologist specializing in abnormal homicide and sex crimes, offender profiler, lecturer, podcast host, singer-songwriter, and the CEO of Grinning Man Media.
Takeaways
