How Murders and Cold Cases Get Solved - Sheryl McCollum
Sheryl "Mac" McCollum is a special person. Period. It takes minutes of being around her to know that. Why? Because she cares. She cares about the people she's with, she cares about what she's doing at the moment, and fortunately for the crime-solving world, she cares deeply about her profession and most importantly the victims of the crimes she investigates.
All Things Crime is honored to welcome Sheryl back for another discussion as we talk about her Emmy Award, her work as the Director of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute, and the progress being made in the brutal murder of Melissa Wolfenbarger.

Using Effective Communication To Solve Problems w/ Ravi Rajani
Professional and effective communicators can immediately get your attention. How? By recognizing the situation and using a pattern interruption technique that will snap anyone back to reality. Oftentimes this will also diffuse a seemingly hostile or confrontational situation.
Ravi Rajani is such a communicator, and he teaches people how to be more effective in their interactions, presentations and communications for a living. And he's REALLY good at it! Ravi started in theater as a child, entered the corporate world in his 20s and is now fulfilling his true calling as a communication coach for individuals and corporations.
What does this have to do with true crime? Everything! How many horrible situations could potentially improve if the opposing parties could communicate better? I think we all know the answer to that. Is this the solution to all of our current problems? Of course not. But it's a great place to start!
We highly recommend you follow Ravi or contact him at these locations:

The Critical Role of Defense Attorneys - All Things Crime w/ Lucas Hirsty
For most of us, the title of defense attorney carries as negative a connotation as a door-to-door vacuum salesman. But in our criminal justice system, a robust defense of any defendant, guilty or not, is imperative for a fair and just society to exist.
Lucas Hirsty is a public defender in San Diego, California, and strongly believes in ensuring his clients receive a fair trial. During our discussion, he said something that I've never heard before though, and that is that he views his job and responsibility to be to ensure the investigators, the prosecution, and the judge are doing their jobs much more than just "getting his client freed" as most of us view defense attorneys. It was actually refreshing to hear that!
Lucas also hosts the podcast Members of the Jury. Make sure to check it out!

Sex Crimes: How Our Most Vulnerable Are Being Victimized - Tammey Gray
Lt (Ret) Tammey Gray served 32 years with the same sheriff's department in South Florida - an impressive feat by itself, but she also served 8 years with the sex crimes unit, which almost puts her on a pedestal. Why? Because sex crimes, especially against children, are so horrific very few detectives can handle more than a couple of years of it.
In this All Things Crime episode we discuss how these horrific crimes are affecting our most vulnerable, and how parents, relatives, and neighbors can help prevent them. We MUST be more proactive in educating our children on how they can protect themselves against predators!

How a Skid Row Cop Is Changing the World: All Things Crime w/ Officer Deon Joseph
Officer Deon Joseph is not just a 25-year law enforcement officer, he's also a homeless advocate, author, and public speaker. He's spent untold hours helping drug addicts, homeless and marginalized citizens receive help, and taken time away from his family to speak to university-age kids and professors, educating them on the realities of the street and policing.
This episode is a fantastic discussion about where we are as a society, especially in light of the defunding of the police movement and the war on cops. How do we get the pendulum to swing the other way? Deon has some amazing ideas and we all need to take them to heart.

What Can Non-LE Citizens Do To Help Solve Crime? Scene of the Crime Podcast Mike Morford
There are "run of the mill" crimes that can be solved rather quickly and easily, such as burglary where the suspect is caught in the act. Detectives love those kinds of cases. Then there are the cases that are not so simple and can drag on for years and even decades.
The lingering cases are tragic in many ways. Typically they involve more serious crimes, which affect significantly more people in the community, and the case against the suspect(s), assuming there is one, must be backed by evidence that can enable a jury to dispel any reasonable doubt.
In this, All Things Crime episode, Jared and Mike Morford discuss what all of us non-law enforcement types can do to help. From simply thanking a police officer for serving down to discussing a case on a podcast to generate tips, there is always something we can do to help. Resources, information, moral support, there is always more we can do, so please help in any way you can!

Advancements in Forensic DNA w/ Suzanna Ryan, MS
In the last decade, forensic science has advanced more than in the previous century, enabling DNA analysts to generate profiles from evidence collections so small it would fit on the end of a pin. Not the head, the END. Sometimes only 8-10 cells are enough!
As those advances in science have come, DNA experts have risen to work on making sure the sensitivity of the process does not overwhelm the DNA itself. Suzanna Ryan is one of those experts. She has held multiple positions in both private and public crime labs and has testified for both the defense and prosecution, so she knows the entire system inside and out.

Law Enforcement and Community Relations: All Things Crime Dale Dupree
We promised to cover ALL aspects of investigations and the investigative process, and a big part of that is the relationship between law enforcement and the community. How much more difficult is it to solve a crime when the members of the community won't cooperate with the investigators? To say much is a massive understatement.
In this episode, Dale Dupree, founder of the Sales Rebellion (https://www.thesalesrebellion.com/), joined All Things Crime to discuss some of the reasons people may not have a good relationship with another regardless of their circumstances, position, and posture. I thought it was a fascinating discussion and there's plenty of food for thought. Hope you do too!

Noelle Kohles - Nursing Perspective on the Law Enforcement Stresses of Today
Noelle Kohles MSN, RN, has been in nursing for over 15 years. She was a critical care nurse in a NICU so she has seen the worst of tragedies. What could be more stressful than watching a child pass away? She's also been in nursing leadership, so been responsible for the training and well-being of an entire nursing shift, which has its own set of challenges. Then there's COVID!!
With that experience, she has set out to become one of the premier nursing, PTSD, and leadership trainers in the country, and we are excited to have her on the show! WHY? Because how she and the other hospital staff deal with stress, fatigue, PTSD, etc, are very familiar with what our law enforcement has to go through. That makes for an interesting discussion!

Jeff Cheek PI - From Law Enforcement Officer to Private Investigator
Law Enforcement officers develop a myriad of skills ranging from discipline to interrogation to administrative organization. When they leave law enforcement these skills translate into valuable assets for civilian occupations and employers.
Private investigator and corporate security expert Jeff Cheek is a perfect example of a seasoned officer who has moved into the civilian world and is now using his expertise to further his career and benefit those in need of his services. We first met Jeff when he was working on a cold case homicide in the Kansas City area. He was one of the responding officers to the scene when he was a relatively young officer, and helping solve that case has been one of his missions ever since. Using the M-Vac to potentially get DNA from the victim's clothing is what introduced us, and we have been in contact ever since.

Amanda Coleman - How Become The Irish Angel - Support the Police
The Irish Angel!! How could a video cast about law enforcement and the criminal investigative process be complete without an episode including law enforcement's biggest supporter? We are absolutely honored to speak to Amanda Coleman, the founder of The Irish Angel (https://irishang.org/) today!
In 2016, Amanda just wanted to do something...ANYTHING, to help support the police and other 1st responders, especially in America, who were being brutally criticized for even the smallest mistakes, and eventually for just doing their job! She saw, even from Ireland, how blatantly unfair it was to the 99% of good cops when the 1% would make a mistake. So she started posting support messages, especially for police, all over social media. They so appreciated it that she was flooded with thank you letters, messages, and emails. She even was awarded her call sign The Irish Angel by a SWAT team in Georgia and the name stuck.
Amanda now leads a fantastic team in supporting our police, and we are thrilled to join her in her efforts! Do we want accountability and responsibility in our law enforcement? Of course! But we also want them to be respected, revered and appreciated the way they deserve!
I think you will really enjoy this episode!

Parker Sneddon - How Do Forensic Suppliers Help Solve Crimes?
In this interview, Parker Sneddon and Jared discuss the reality of solving crime with modern-day technology through crime scene products and forensic science.
Contrary to many crime shows, the modern-day Sherlock Holmes or Colombo superhero/crime solver does not exist. In reality, there is a team of investigators, support staff, and vendors that all play a role in helping solve the cases.
Arrowhead Forensics (https://www.arrowheadforensics.com/), like M-Vac Systems, is one of those vendors that provides a variety of tools for the investigators to use and move cases forward, many times in a more rapid way than they could have in the past.
In this episode Jared interviews Parker Sneddon, Arrowhead's Chief Marketing Officer, to get a better feel of them as a business and most importantly what they are currently doing to help law enforcement agencies and crime labs be more effective in investigations.

Forensic DNA From Shell Casings! Karin Crenshaw - BSO Crime Lab Unit Mgr DNA
Forensic DNA from spent shell casings!!
Many major law enforcement agencies have their own crime lab, including a DNA lab. This is a major expense but the advantage is cases can get processed faster, the local agency has more control over what evidence is processed, and sometimes research can be conducted between departments. This is what happened with the Broward County Sheriff's Office recently. The DNA/biology section of the crime lab and the detectives of the Crime Scene Unit were able to join forces and research new ways to collect forensic DNA from spent shell casings.
Karin Crenshaw is the BSO Crime Lab Unit Manager DNA, and she worked extensively with Detective Chris Williams of the Crime Scene Unit to take existing protocols, such as the Bardole Method, and put their own ideas into the method to further enhance the lab's ability to collect DNA from a spent shell casing. They presented their findings at the 2020 ISHI Conference, and the forensic and law enforcement communities are putting the new protocol into practice. Here is a link to the publication:
https://www.ishinews.com/maximizing-dna-yield-from-fired-cartridge-casings/
Of note is the following: "The Broward Sheriff’s Office Crime Laboratory and Crime Scene Unit have worked together to optimize a DNA collection method that allows for approximately 41% higher DNA recovery when compared to swabbing techniques and yielded DNA profiles consisting of approximately 68% more alleles."

Joe Kennedy, Cold Case Expert, NCIS (ret) - How Experts Solve Cold Cases
In this interview, Joe Kennedy and Jared Bradley discuss how experts solve cold cases. They cover what it's like to work a homicide case, establish NCIS, work on cold cases, and train detectives.
Homicides are, by their nature, the most difficult cases to solve. The crimes are usually brutal, the victim's family will never get closure, and the community is affected more than any other crime statistic. This is why only seasoned, hardened and the best-trained detectives make the homicide squad.
In his 25+ years at NCIS, Joe Kennedy not only helped solve dozens of homicides all over the world, he also was instrumental in establishing the NCIS cold case unit and trained cold case squads on almost every continent. Since retiring from NCIS, Joe has continued to train detectives in cold case techniques and shares some of his insights with us in this episode.

Nancy Sulinski, Crime Scene and Forensics Expert - How Do You Become a Successful CSI?
It's safe to say that by the time a CSI is ready to retire he/she has seen more than their fair share of horrible things, dealt with thousands of people who are having quite possibly the worst day of their lives, and spent countless hours pouring over evidence at both the scene of the crime and the police station looking for any clue as to the identity of the perpetrator.
Nancy Sulinski is one of those people. She served over 20 years as a senior CSI, gaining expertise in everything from collecting forensic DNA to fingerprinting to ballistics. We spend a few minutes learning her story and what she did as a CSI.

Crawlspace Podcasters Tim and Lance - How Do True Crime Podcasts Help Solve Crime?
True Crime Podcasts are becoming hugely popular, and two of the best out there are Lance Reenstierna and Tim Pilleri of Crawlspace and Missing Maura Murray. They are experts at interviewing, uncovering details of a story and drilling down into what could have happened to a victim or case, and exploring possibilities in how it might be solved.
How does that help investigations, especially cold cases? Podcasters raise awareness. They are a new set of eyes. They broadcast details of a case that may bring additional resources or motivate witnesses to come forward and help the case. And although consummate professionals in educating their audiences, they also have a good time and make the podcasts entertaining and enlightening.

Mehul Anjaria - How Criminal Defense Experts Prepare Clients, Advise In DNA Matters
In this interview, Mehul Anjaria and Jared discuss Criminal Defense practices and DNA's role in the criminal justice system. Mehul had worked as an analyst, DNA tech leader, and forensic expert for over 20 years, and his experience ranges from analyzing DNA in a public crime lab to helping educate juries and even convicted criminals on the basics of DNA.
Forensic DNA is, by far, the most discriminatory and scientifically sound evidence that investigators can find at a crime scene or from evidence. But even with the ability to say there is one chance in trillions that it's NOT a certain person, forensic DNA can still be misused, misunderstood, and misinterpreted.
This is a fascinating interview and we appreciate all the info Mehul was able to share with All Things Crime!

One of the keys to a secure financial future is understanding where your expenses are coming from, and one of the largest in the government in the form of taxes. Supporting your community, state, and country is important, but it's crazy to pay more than what is required! And considering most of us pay between 35-50% of our income to the government then anything we can do to reduce that just makes sense.
Rob McNinch is an expert in a number of financial products that can benefit anyone with a retirement plan, or who wants one. I decided to have him on because so many 1st responders have retirement plans but may be able to further leverage them with more information.
