The Murder of Sarah DeLeon - Detective Describes The Scene!
In 1989, Sarah DeLeon was 18 yrs old.
She had her whole life in front of her.
She was young and vibrant, fun-loving, beautiful and everyone seemed to like her.
Except for one person - and she ended up being the prime suspect in Sarah's murder.
In December 1989, a train conductor noticed from his train window what he thought was a body laying next to a large, cylindrical bridge support. He stopped his train and went back to look and sure enough, it was the body of a young girl.
She had been brutally stabbed 22 times, many of those wounds in the neck area.
In investigative circles an attack that is vicious and brutal is often referred to as a 'crime of passion', and it usually involves two people that know each other.
When police arrived they noticed drag marks in the snow and gravel, with periodic, small pools of blood between the road and where the body lay. The distance was 18-20 feet, at a slight decline, and the ground was frozen solid.
Not far off was a popular high school partying place, and both the victim and the suspect knew about it, and how isolated it was. The suspect also likely knew that police rarely went down there because it was so isolated.
Sarah's body was dragged and left in a way it would have been very difficult to see it from the road. The murderer obviously didn't anticipate a train conductor seeing it from the nearby tracks.
Where had the investigation led since 1989?
It's taken more twists and turns than most would believe, including potentially being tied to another murder just 5 years later that involved the same suspect and another couple.
And Detective (Ret) Jeff Cheek has been involved the entire time.
He was a cadet when a homicide detective grabbed him and said he was going out on a homicide call with him. The victim was Sarah, and Jeff thought he knew her and she had gone to his school.
Could a serial killer be walking the streets to this day?

The Lina Reyes-Geddes Cold Case Homicide Solved After 24 Years Pt 3
Does your crime lab have all the latest technologies that would enable it to solve a crime committed against you?
Odds are it doesn't. Especially if it's a public lab.
Of course, they do their best and are experts with what they have, but time after time cold cases are being solved as new technologies emerge.
And most public labs take a while before they are able to get those latest and greatest techs.
One of those newer and very powerful technologies is the M-Vac system.
Why is it the key that is unlocking so many cases?
Because forensic DNA is becoming the gold standard and no tool in the world can collect more surface DNA material than the M-Vac, which is oftentimes leading to a DNA profile that couldn't be obtained before.
In the Lina Reyes-Geddes case, investigators were able to collect 117 ng of DNA material from a rope that had been tested by the state lab multiple times in the past with zero results.
And that was the big break they needed to solve the case!
Lina Reyes-Davis went missing on April 8th, 1998. At the time she lived in Youngstown, Ohio, with her husband, Edward Geddes.
12 days later, over 2,000 miles away in a remote area just north of Lake Powell, Utah, two men found a body by the side of the road.
But no one knew it was Lina.
Her body had been tied up, frozen, wrapped in plastic and duct tape, and placed in a sleeping bag all rolled up in some carpet. And her fingertips had been removed so investigators could not identify her by fingerprints.
Her "loving husband" never reported her missing. The only way authorities knew to begin looking for her was because one of her relatives in Mexico called the Youngstown PD and said she had never made it to visit them.
Lina had disappeared and her husband, Edward committed suicide 3 yrs later. Did the guilt get to him?
Fast forward 20 years. Investigators from the Utah State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) had reopened the case several times with no breakthroughs. The Maidenwater Jane Doe case remained unsolved.
Detective Brian Davis was assigned the case in 2016.
How did he solve the case? By teaming up with other detectives and experts to finally put all the pieces together!
Incredible thin threads link enough pieces together that Det Davis and the detective in Youngstown Ohio were able to identify her. Is it all a coincidence?
Before you watch or listen to part 3, you should really go watch part 1 and 2 of this fascinating interview!

Methods That Help Investigators Solve Crime? Detective Steve Conner Pt 3
Detective Steve Conner spent 15 years investigating crimes, most of those in homicide, and helped his department solve hundreds of cases.
But what changes and adaptations did he have to go through in order to keep up with the times?
Many of our viewers and listeners may not even know what a carbon copy is.
You should look it up cause that was a major pain!
And as the amazing technology of the typewriter came onto the scene and eventually computers they paved the way to DNA, crime scene imaging, drones and body cameras, just to name a few.
Detective Conner discusses a number of his cases and how he was able to use technology, including forensic genealogy, to help bring murderers to justice!

Catching a Serial Killer - Alex Ewing's Murder- Det Steve Conner Pt 2
In 1984 the city of Aurora, Colorado was horrified by the news of the brutal murder of three members of the Bennett Family - the husband, wife and oldest daughter - had all been beaten to death with a hammer. The youngest daughter, despite being beaten as well, somehow survived the ordeal.
There were other murders that had similarities as well. All the victims were beaten to death with a hammer and their garage doors were left open at night. Other than that there was no apparent connection.
Denver had a serial killer on the loose.
Detective Steve Conner was one of many detectives who had looked at the Bennett case, but he had the advantages of time and the advances in technology, including DNA.
In time he contacted Dr Fitzpatrick in Arizona and had her run the DNA through her genealogical database and she not only identified the family tree of the killer, she gave Steve the name of the killer!

How To Become a Homicide Detective? Detective Steve Conner Describes His Journey pt1
How did you end up where you are?
I think that's a question most of us ask ourselves on a regular basis.
Hopefully, you also have a good answer for it!
When I was a kid I always wanted to be an army general. Lead troops into battle. Be a GI Joe type. I achieved some of those dreams, but definitely not all of them!
Detective (Ret) Steve Conner had those kinds of dreams as well, but they were more focused on being a cop. And he definitely accomplished that!
After serving many years in law enforcement, mostly with Aurora PD in the Denver, Colorado area, he joins All Things Crime to discuss his career path as well as some of his more interesting (and brutal) cases.

Honoring Our Fathers And Other Positive Male Role Models - Society Needs You!
How do you celebrate Father's Day?
Do you celebrate it at all?
All of us had a biological male that contributed half of who we are genetically, but sadly not all of us have a Father, and some in society don't even have a man to look up to.
We need to change that.
Why?
There's a direct correlation between not having a positive male role model in a young man's life, how well they grow into their role in society and crime.
So if a young man doesn't have a father, other men need to step up and help fill that gap.

The Warrior Class - Who Are They In Today's Society? Do We Support Them?
Warriors.
Throughout history, there has been a warrior class - those willing to defend what they hold most dear - whether that is their family, their tribe, their community, or their nation, they have always existed.
And societies that didn't were quickly destroyed or defeated and whatever assets they had were given to the victors.
Most modern-day competitions are based on teaching warriors the skills needed to win on the battlefield. American football is the perfect example of that. It was created and further developed to teach squad-level skills, teamwork, and ways to penetrate the enemy's defenses and overwhelm them.
But for some reason, there are a few small but vocal groups in modern-day society that want to demean, belittle and demoralize the warriors who, ironically, defend their right to be vocal.
What happens if they succeed? What happens if the "defund the police" movement succeeds? What happens if the anti-2A movement succeeds?
Have we really thought this through??

The Tragedy of Susan Powell and Her Boys - Familicide Pt 3
What are the signs of domestic violence and abuse?
Could you readily spot them?
Most of us can't. Partially because many of the forms of domestic violence and abuse are not physical so we don't see the bruises etc that we typcially expect in a DV case.
Before abusive people like Josh Powell reach the point of physical violence there are lots of ways he or she can abuse - manipulation, coercion, threats, using children or a parent to control others - and the list goes on and on.
And often times abuse is generational. In Josh Powell's case, he was abused by his parents and they were abused by theirs, so it was a developed pattern of behavior.
Tune in to this last episode of our discussion with attorneys Evan Bariault and Anne Bremner to hear all about this sickening form of behavior!
Clearly, now that we have the ability to review Josh Powell's actions before he killed (assumingly) his wife, Susan, and then murdered his two little boys with a hatchet, then burned himself and the two boys to death, we know at least what his mindset was.
Such is the Powell Family Tragedy.
Josh Powell, the father, was a psychopath. But like most psychotics, he was able to hide his behavior from all but the closest to him. Sadly, his wife Susan knew what he was capable of and literally made notes and videos to her loved ones stating that if anything ever happened to her it was Josh that had killed her.
Then, on a cold December night in Utah, Josh Powell took his two young boys camping in the desert West of Salt Lake City - which no sane person would ever do. Not surprisingly, Susan disappeared about that same time.
We all know what likely happened to her. Josh killed Susan in a rage, probably because he was losing control of Susan and his own circumstances, and then buried her somewhere in the desert.
Within weeks of Susan disappearing Josh moved himself and his two young boys up to the Seattle area, where the State of Washington removed the boys from Josh's custody and ordered him to undergo a psychosexual evaluation.
A short time later he killed his boys and blew himself up.
Anne Bremner and Evan Bariault are attorneys who have been fighting to get justice for Susan, her two young boys and Susan's parents for over a decade. They join us to tell this tragic tale in a way that only those who are intimately involved with the case can.

How do you kill another human being, let alone your own family member?
What kind of mental derangement do you have to be in to do that?

The Tragedy of Susan Powell and Her Boys - Familicide Pt 1
Any murder is tragic.
But when it involves children we all draw a sharp breath in shock.
When we learn a family member killed their own family and likely themselves as well it takes our disbelief to an entirely new level.
Such is the Powell Family Tragedy.

The Matrix's Lessons: Unveiling the Link Between Scarcity, Violence, and Personal Security
In Matrix Resurrection Captain Nairobi says "Nothing breeds violence like scarcity". That statement made me rewind and listen to it again.
Because it's ABSOLUTELY true.
Good times bring contentment, lounging, and easy living. Take away people's resources and see how quickly that changes, especially if those resources include the bare necessities - food, shelter, and security.
I'm headed to Australia for work. As a US citizen, supposedly an Australian ally, in order to obtain a visa and enter the country I had to fill out a 19-page questionnaire, submit my marriage license, DD214, 3 months of pay stubs, covid test, and other documents, all to prove that I was who I was saying I was, I didn't plan on staying past my visa and I had ample reason to go home when my business was concluded.
Obviously, they are picky about who they will allow into their country. And why shouldn't they be?? I guarantee millions of people would rush to be allowed into Australia if they opened the floodgates of immigration.
Just like they are in the United States. But for some insane reason, the concept of personal, community, and national security is basically being completely ignored in the US. And it is not going to end well.
Not only are people dying along the way to our southern border, but when they get in the expectations of gliding along gold-paved roads with ease for the rest of their lives may not become a reality. And when it doesn't, the immigrants who made the journey because they believed the lies are not going to be happy.
That's when the security part comes in. Not only will the US national sovereignty be completely violated, but with a massive influx of immigrants who have not had time to assimilate, yet expect to be taken care of, and recognize the lies they will do the natural thing - lash out and take what they view as theirs.
That's when our personal and community security will come into play. Will we just let them take what they want? Do what they want? With no consequences? We'll see what others do, but I know what I will do!

Solving Murders With Cutting Edge Technology Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick Part 3
Dr Colleen Fitzpatrick wrap up our discussion, including the first case the M-Vac helped solve, the media's reaction, and how the first-ever mention of Colleen and a colleague from Identifinders International were described.
Sometimes you just have to shake your head right?
Forensic genealogy is changing the way cases are solved, and many of them are years if not decades old. If the investigators can procure DNA material from the crime scene, then even if the suspect's DNA is not in the DNA database they can oftentimes use genealogy methods to develop a family tree and a name.
Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick has a Ph.D. in nuclear physics. So how did she become one of the leading experts in the world in forensic genealogy?
It's all about the numbers. Statistics. Getting rid of the data that is not relevant and identifying what is.
And when two of the most knowledgeable homicide detectives we know recommend we talk to her, we do it! After all, aren't both Lindsey Wade and Joe Kennedy awesome All Things Crime interviews? So of course they would know!
Tune in to this fascinating discussion with the founder of Identifinders International and learn about some of the amazing cases she has helped solve!

How Did Forensic Genealogy Help The Phoenix Canal Murders? Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick Pt 2
The Phoenix Canal Murders occurred in 1992-93. The murders took place in Phoenix, Arizona, and each of them involved a young woman that went for a bike ride in the early evening along the Arizona Canal, and neither one of them ever returned.
The victims' names were Melanie Bernas and Angela Brosso.
While at a conference in Phoenix Dr Fitzpatrick met with some members of the Phoenix PD and explained to them what she could do to possibly help their case. They sent her the data, she ran it in her system, and came out with the name Miller.
The killer's name was Brian Patrick Miller.

How Did Ted Bundy's DNA Profile Get Uploaded to CODIS? Det Lindsey Wade Pt 1
What do you do when you are investigating a 1961 cold case and you learn one of the most prolific serial killers in American history (Ted Bundy) may be a suspect? You get to work!
Cold case detective (retired) Lindsey Wade was reviewing cold case files in Tacoma, Washington, and realized Ted Bundy could have killed the victim from their oldest case. It was a long shot, but one that needed to be explored. Evidence was going to be sent to the lab for DNA testing. But she didn't have a reference sample from Bundy.
But surely Ted Bundy would be in the CODIS (national) DNA database right? He is the poster child for why we need one! The serial killer who operated in numerous states across the country, likely committing many crimes that have never been solved but DNA might be collected someday. But not even the state of Florida, where he was executed, had his profile.
That had to be fixed. So Detective Wade, along with numerous others, went to work and eventually found some of his blood that had been stored in a safe for 40 years and managed to get a DNA profile from it.
Was he the killer? Watch the episode and find out!

The Life and Responsibilities of a Cold Case Homicide Detective - Lindsey Wade Pt 5
Being a homicide detective isn't the glamor you see on TV. When a murder happens, which is usually at night, the detectives are called in and they must drop everything they're doing and head immediately to the scene.
The clock is ticking and time is not on the side of the detectives.
It takes grit, determination, persistence, and years of training to solve the more complicated cases. Some murders have almost no evidence, no witnesses, and no suspects.
Combine all of that with the fact that the case has gone cold from lack of leads, and that is the life of a cold case detective.
To say the detective must get creative is a dramatic understatement!
Detective Lindsey Wade was charged with solving, if at all possible, the 27 yr old cold cases of Jennifer Bastian and Michella Welch, among others, and she got creative in doing so.
What she didn't expect was what happened when she DID solve one of the cases. Tune in to find out what it was!

Breaking The News To The Mother's Victim! Det. Lindsey Wade Pt 4
Detective Lindsey Wade had been working on Jennifer Bastian's murder case for years. She had grown to love her mom and even received strength from her to keep moving forward, somehow.
'If Pattie Bastian, who's 12 yr old daughter can put a smile on her face and keep going, then I can too' was Detective Wade's mindset. But the cold case was 30 years old!
Evidence was almost non-existent, good leads and suspects few and far between, and every day the case dragged on seemed more and more hopeless.
But in 2015 there was a breakthrough. Detective Wade learned about a new genealogical technique in Arizona that might help get a family name from a Y-STR profile. So she sent it to them and the Arizona lab returned 3 names. One of those names was in the case file but not anyone Det Wade was remotely focused on.
But now Detective Wade had a plan. Every year their cold case unit needed to conduct an exercise. This year (2016), they were going to reopen this case, put out a renewed call to the public, and go collect DNA buccal swabs from as many suspects as they could. With all the help they mustered they collected hundreds of swabs.
After almost 18 months and negative, after negative results came back from the crime lab, Detective Wade had almost given up. Then she got the call. We have a match.
Learn what happened from there in this episode!

Tacoma Murders: Serial Killer Connection? | Det. Lindsey Pt. 3
In 1986 Tacoma, Washington was a beautiful, quiet, and safe community. Or so all the residents thought.
In May 1986, 12-year-old Michelle Welch was riding her bike in a city park. She never came home. Search dogs found her body that night. She had been sexually assaulted and murdered.
Just a few months later another young girl, Jennifer Bastian, was riding her bike in a park just a mile or so away from where Michelle was killed. When she failed to come home at the time she had told her father they began to search for her. After tracing her typical bike route with no trace of her, they called the police, and a massive search was launched. Her body was not discovered until a jogger noticed a foul smell in the park two weeks later.
Detectives thought the two crimes were most likely committed by the same perpetrator because of the similarities between the two cases. Both young girls, riding a bike in a park, both in the North end of Tacoma, both sexually assaulted and murdered.
DNA was obtained from Michella's case but there was no profile in CODIS to compare it to. Jennifer's case was much more difficult. Because her body was so decomposed when they found her and DNA technology being what it was in the 80s, separating any suspect DNA from her DNA was impossible.
Fortunately, law enforcement is some of the most dedicated, persistent, and relentless individuals in all of society, and the Tacoma PD never gave up on their cases. In time DNA technology improved. A male profile from Jennifer's swimsuit was able to be collected and when compared to the DNA from Michella's killer, the two did NOT match!
This threw the entire investigation into a different realm as now the cases had to be examined as two completely separate and unrelated crimes. Suspects previously discounted had to now be reexamined. Witnesses re-questioned. The cold case unit had their work cut out for them!

How Do DNA Databases Like CODIS Work? Det Lindsey Wade Pt 2
There are over 230,000 cold-case homicides in the United States. If you add unsolved rapes and assaults that number becomes staggering. Imagine the impact if the populace thought about how many un-convicted rapists, murderers, and violent criminals there are!
Would it help if serial killers like Ted Bundy were in the database?
Of course, it would! Then why aren't all major crime offenders in the database?
Cold case detective (retired) Lindsey Wade explains!

Private Crime Lab: Personalized Forensic DNA Profiling for Justice w Theron Vines
Forensic evidence can be fickle.
Sometimes it easily yields a perfect, one-contributor DNA profile, and other times it's a jumbled mess that is completely uninterpretable and can't contribute anything of value to solving the case.
Pure Gold Forensics is a private crime lab in Southern California and since their inception just a few years ago they have been making huge waves, acquiring much of the latest technology, including the M-Vac system, and methods in generating the absolute best forensic DNA profiles possible.
We discuss their "boutique" lab and some of the latest cases with President Theron Vines, and how they are making a difference for the victims of crimes.

Criminals and Dictators Are The Same In The Face of Weakness - Russian Invasion of Ukraine
Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is a playground bully - just on a much grander scale. He believes he can act however he wants, take what he wants, and there's nothing of significance anyone will do about it, especially the "leaders" of the Western World.
So two days ago he invaded Ukraine. Not at the minor scale, all the intelligence agencies indicated, but a full-scale attack with almost 200,000 troops, armor, and aircraft. His armies have fired missiles at civilian housing, his tanks have run over civilians in cars and casualties are rapidly rising.
What have the leaders of the world done? Very little. Applied sanctions against Putin's billionaire buddies which will make it more difficult for them to get their kids into Harvard. But the US and other countries are still buying thousands of barrels of oil and natural gas from Putin, the mainstay of his economy, making him richer than ever.
Never underestimate the stupidity of politicians.
How does Putin explain himself? He's justified because the Ukrainians and Russians have an ancestral and language connection so he is simply uniting the two. As ridiculous as that is no one has done much about it except the President of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people who are putting up a surprisingly fierce resistance.
The similarities between Putin's mentality and most criminals are startling. Someone has what he wants so he's just going to take it. And unless someone is big and bad enough to stop him he really doesn't care what others think.
Add to that the weak and feckless actions of our world, state, and community leaders in essentially enabling criminals to have free reign in many of our largest states and cities and no one should be surprised that crime of every level is on the rise.
We're at a dangerous crossroads folks, and unless the good men and women of the world stand up and demand our leaders do their duty it will only get progressively worse.
