Prison or Freedom - Your Attorney Matters Part 2 - Elizabeth Franklin
Elizabeth Franklin is the founder of the law practice Elizabeth Franklin-Best, PC. It is a boutique law firm focused on client appeals. Her focus is on helping clients beat cases. Understanding this process is crucial for detectives and investigators.
In this episode, part 2 of a 3-part series, we go deeper into the rabbit hole of evidence collection and how it leads to convictions and acquittals.
Elizabeth explains that mistakes in evidence retrieval can kill cases immediately. Bite marks for example have proven to be unreliable. Toxicology reports tend to be accurate. DNA still proves to be strong, but again, if collected incorrectly leads to bad convictions or guilty parties walking free.
Takeaways
Physical evidence can be unreliable if it is obtained incorrectly
Don’t make assumptions based on physical evidence only
Qualify cases by talking to people first

Aurora Theatre Murders - How and Why It Happened Part 3 - Kerrie Droban
Kerrie Droban is a criminal defense attorney at Droban and Company and author of, "Aurora: Inside the Mind of a Mass Shooter."
People in general, view each other through the prism of their own perspective. Most people will look at the Aurora Theatre killer and have no ability to comprehend his thought processes, and we'll revert back to thinking he's just insane. We can't empathize at all. It's almost like a protection mechanism that we go through. It is this lack of ability to understand what these killers go through that blinds us to glaring red flags.
Three Takeaways

Why people don’t report red flags.

Kerrie Droban is a criminal defense attorney at Droban and Company and author of, "Aurora: Inside the Mind of a Mass Shooter."
Kerrie Droban is an investigator of evil. She believes people have a tendency to view others through their own prism and can't comprehend what goes on in the mind of a mass shooter. It's hard for people to process such senseless violence and our impulse is to blame someone. In her work, she often examines why evil manifests and tries to highlight the brave souls that confront it every day. She thinks it's important to have a dialogue to prevent future violence

Aurora Theatre Murders - How and Why It Happened Part 1 - All Things Crime
Many people can relate to the thrill of seeing movies at the theater. The least they expect is a tragedy. On July 20th, 2012, a Century 16 movie theater in Colorado was disrupted when James Eagan Holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 more.
Despite not having a criminal record, James planned his evil act intensively with a notebook. Without any remorse, he orchestrated his plan and affected the lives of many victims and their families.
In this episode of All Things Crime, Jared Bradley welcomes Kerrie Droban, a defense attorney who has written 8 books related to crime. They talk about how the minds of serial killers and psychopaths work and how psychiatrists figure out the source of their malicious intentions.

Protecting Our Most Precious Resource - Children
Halloween is one of the most celebrated holidays of the year. Children get to play their favorite characters and gorge on candy. While Halloween is a holiday centered around fear and scary themes, current events have become the stuff of nightmares. Particularly when they involve children.
In areas where criminals operate, children become the most vulnerable. The southern border has seen a lot of children being abused by human traffickers. This vicious cycle of criminal acts continues when children are not given the opportunity to overcome their trauma and receive proper guidance and education.
Quote
“Education and schooling are two very different things. Schooling is being present in school, while education is when you’re learning. Allow the kids to get educated.”

Doug Bremner, MD: The Psychology of True Crime Pt. 2
Gun violence and racism have become prevalent issues in the United State’s current political climate. This is why a credible justice system is as important as ever.
In the second part of the two-episode interview with Doug Bremner, Jared and Doug discuss how social media influences people’s opinions about recent news on crime. They cited the infamous Kyle Rittenhouse case in Wisconsin in which a 17-year-old who carried an assault rifle caused fatal injuries to at least two men during a Black Lives Matter demonstration.
Although his trial proved him to be innocent on the basis of self-defense, media coverage depicted the case differently. Social media even fueled people’s rage and sentiments about the issue. While politics will always have divisive viewpoints, people need to distinguish between fact and opinion in a generation where platforms can easily take things out of context.

The Psychology Of True Crime Doug Bremner pt. 1
When Amanda Knox got back to her apartment in Perugia, Italy, she was terrified of seeing blood in the bathroom while her roommate lay lifeless in her locked bedroom. It was 2007 and she was in a foreign country for a student exchange program. After the authorities compiled initial evidence of the gory scene with the consideration that she was in the company of her deceased roommate, Amanda was wrongfully convicted. A grueling investigation followed, both involving the Italian and American justice systems. It was only in 2015 that she was finally acquitted.
Investigating crimes is a crucial part of any justice system. Experts always utilize critical thinking to ensure that traces are accurate. When it comes to the justice system, decision-making is also as crucial as gathering evidence to identify the culprit.
Doug Bremner is a psychologist and physician based in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the brother of Anne Bremner, a prolific attorney who was also a previous guest on this podcast. Doug’s expertise in psychiatry and nuclear medicine encouraged him to release a book with his sister about the Amanda Knox case, the flaws of the justice system, and the solutions needed to address and resolve these issues. In this episode, he explains more about the psychology involving the authority’s decision-making process.

How Database Systems Help Solve a Case Part 2
Angie Dodge suffered a terrible fate in the hands of her killer. As one of the cold cases of the 20th century, the investigation led to a false accusation. The wrongly identified culprit unfortunately spent 20 years in prison before the authorities finally traced the real perpetrator. Because of an intense DNA matching technology and the convict’s confession, the case was finally solved.
In the second part of the two-episode interview with Tom Myers, discussions about the importance of interviews and interrogations were brought up. In a world where crimes continue to plague people, it’s up to the authorities to be extra vigilant and discerning when it comes to their investigation. Liars can hide really well but authorities should know how to identify them.
Technology paves the way for accuracy. Equipment that analyze genetics can trace the culprit. Skills of probing are also integral in identifying the suspect.
Quote
“You can’t expect to be in a bad situation and come out of that okay. You wouldn’t be swimming with sharks that are really hungry.” - Tom Myers

How Database Systems Help Solve a Case Efficiently pt.1
Two innocent girls were kidnapped at a mall and were never found. It was the ‘70s, back when serial killers could easily leave their tracks unseen and their traces undiscovered. Years later, investigation led to a culprit - a dangerous suspect who murdered the girls and burned their remains in his home.
Such cases in the previous century required a lot of time and effort to arrive at a conclusion. With the advent of modern technology and techniques for investigations, similar cases could easily be resolved. Tom Myers believes that a database is just as important as tracing evidence and history.
As a former FBI ERT leader, Tom has had an extensive background in law enforcement. He has been a CSI extraordinaire and a ranger. With his experience in the US army, he has witnessed what it means to protect and serve the country.
Tom is impressed with the innovative tools and equipment used to conclude an investigation. In this episode, he shares his insights on the best practices conducted by detectives to trace the culprit of a crime and efficiently solve a case. A database system, for example, tracks the person’s history so it would be accurate to piece the puzzle together.

Doug Young: How A Senior Crime Scene Investigator Helps Solve Cases Pt. 2
The world is changing. With the innovation of technology comes a shift in generational values and insights. That’s what Doug Young and Jared Bradley observed in their experience and encounters as law enforcers.
In the second part of their two-episode interview, Doug and Jared talk about the painful memories that leave a mark on law enforcers’ mental health. Gory scenes of mutilated victims, some as young as infants, are images that result in trauma, especially for the people who study such cases or have seen the aftermath of the crime first-hand.
The law enforcers’ well-being is a topic that is rarely talked about, especially in the justice system. Many rely on law enforcers to uphold justice, but at the end of the day, they are also human beings just like the people they are sworn to protect.
While modern technology provides an efficient and strategic way to conduct investigation, collect evidence, and reach accurate conclusions, the grueling process poses challenges that take time to overcome.
With generational changes, it’s about time to acknowledge that law enforcement qualifies the bravest and compassionate individuals who are dedicated to keeping communities safe.

Doug Young: How A Seasoned Crime Scene Investigator Helps Solve Cases Pt. 1
A mangled, lifeless body lies on the field, dressed in tattered clothing. Upon its discovery, the dress serves as a potential clue to trace the perpetrator. In a community where crimes like this happen and cold cases go unsolved for years, how far can law enforcers go to carry out justice and ensure safety and security?
Jared Bradley speaks with Doug Young, a crime scene investigator at Thornton Police Department in Colorado. With nearly 30 decades of experience in law enforcement, Doug finds value in forensic science essential in conducting investigations that will result in accurate findings. This is the first part of their two-episode interview.
Innovations in forensic technology helps simplify the complicated process. With the use of the M-Vac, Doug and his team of forensic experts found the culprit - a man who lived with the victim. The wonders of new forensic technology help push progress and simplify complicated investigations. With the right equipment and a dedicated team, law enforcers can bring swift justice to the victims and their families, and regulate a safe and secure community.
