Over 200 Nazi books seized in Argentina after police raid on fascist printing house
#GlobalNews #argentina #propaganda
Argentine federal police on Tuesday night seized more than 200 Nazi and anti-Semitic books in a raid on a printing and book distribution company in Buenos Aires, authorities said.
The raid came after an extensive investigation that began in 2021 following a complaint by the Israeli-Argentine Association (DAIA) against "Libreria Argentina," an e-commerce platform that offered Nazi material.
The police closed down the printing house, which sold books with images of swastikas, iron crosses and the imperial eagle of the National Socialist Party, as well as Nazi propaganda texts.
Police arrested a man who was allegedly the head of the publishing house.

Morocco earthquake: Survivors continue to sleep outdoors in makeshift shelters, 5 days after tragedy
#GlobalNews #Morocco #MoroccoEarthquake
Five days after a deadly 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco that killed at least 2,900, survivors are still spending their nights sleeping outside in makeshift shelters after losing their homes.
Overnight, those without tents slept under blankets on the ground, or in the remnants of damaged structures, cooking in the open from the aid packages that had been distributed.
German-born Moroccan Atik Azzouzi, cut short his vacation in the city of Nador to volunteer with a German aid organization to help those in need.
“My first thought was, what can we do, how can I help?” Azzouzi said.
While the death toll begins to slow, as search operations become increasingly difficult for emergency services, the number of people injured has more than doubled to at least 5,530, officials reported Wednesday.

#GlobalNews #Toronto #police
Toronto police are looking for a suspect wanted in connection with a downtown hit-and-run on the night of Aug. 25, which happened in the area of Dundas Street East and River Street. Police say a cyclist was struck by a "scooter-style motorcycle" at around 11:45 p.m.
Dashcam video shared with Global News by personal injury lawyer David Shellnutt shows the moment the collision occurred.
“The motorcyclist had cut off our client and our client gestured displeasure at him,” he told Global News’ Shallima Maharaj during an interview Wednesday.
“You can see the motorcyclist in the motor vehicle lane yelling, presumably at our client, and then he makes a move into the bike lane and then chases after our client, hits him… We say intentionally.”

Cosmic Dust Rings Spotted by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope
#Nasa #Cosmic
An image from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope reveals a remarkable sight: at least 17 concentric dust rings emanating from a pair of stars located about 5,300 light-years from Earth. Each ring was created when the stars came close together and their colliding stellar winds (streams of gas they blow into space) caused some of the gas to compress into dust.
Collectively known as Wolf-Rayet 140, the stars’ orbits bring them together about once every eight years, so just like the growth rings of a tree trunk, these dusty loops mark the passage of time: The 17 rings reveal more than a century of stellar interactions. And while other Wolf-Rayet stars produce dust, no other pair is known to produce rings quite like Wolf-Rayet 140.
Because the stars’ orbits are elliptical rather than circular, the distance between the stars changes constantly, and dust forms only when they are close. The amount of dust produced by this interaction varies, so the system doesn’t form a perfect bullseye. One of the densest regions of dust production creates the bright feature repeating at 2 o’clock.

Keep AI under the control of people”: Technology leaders testify before US Senate
#GlobalNews #artificialintelligence
Speaking before a U.S. Senate hearing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Tuesday, technology company Nvidia’s chief scientist William Dally testified that “uncontrollable artificial intelligence is science fiction, not reality.
"At its core, AI is a software program that is limited by its training, the inputs provided to it, and the nature of its output. We can spur innovation by ensuring AI tools are available to everyone, not concentrated in the hands of a few powerful firms,” Dally said.
Echoing those thoughts, Microsoft President Brad Smith added that “Maybe It’s one of the most important things we need to do so we ensure that the threats that many people worry about remain as part of science fiction and don’t become a new reality. Let’s keep AI under the control of people.”
Tuesday was the third AI-focused hearing hosted by Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Josh Hawley, R-Mo., the leaders of the Judiciary subcommittee on privacy, technology and the law.

Apple launch: New iPhone 15 skips price hike amid slumping global smartphone sales

Apple unveiled its newest iPhones and Apple Watches today at a launch event code-named Wonderlust. The tech giant says its latest iPhones will be brighter, lighter and safer for users.
The good news is the prices have remained nearly the same as last year — with the iPhone 15 base model starting at $799 and going up to $1199 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The premium Pro model iPhones will be encased in titanium for the first time, the same alloy used in the Mars Rover. This makes the iPhone 15 Pros lighter and more durable than previous models, but it limits the colour options to just four.

Premier Doug Ford’s 2018 mandate letter revealed for 1st time amid Greenbelt scandal
#GlobalNews #DougFord #Greenbelt
After Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives were swept into office in June 2018, newly minted Premier Doug Ford said he would run a government defined by ethics, accountability and a province that was strictly “for the people.”
In a series of mandate letters given to newly appointed cabinet ministers in 2018, Ford laid out in painstaking detail exactly what he meant by “for the people” — words that would eventually clash with the premier’s actions six years later with his government embroiled in the Greenbelt land swap scandal.
For years, the Ontario provincial government has fought to prevent the release of the mandate letters from 2018. But now, they have been obtained by Global News and are being made public for the first time.
Global’s Queen's Park bureau chief Colin D'Mello has more on what they reveal.

Turkey's Erdogan says grain deal without Russia would not be "sustainable"
#GlobalNews #Turkey #Russia
During the 2023 G20 New Delhi summit — and two months after Russia exited the Black Sea grain initiative — Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said a new international grain deal that did not include Russia would not be “sustainable.”
“There is a very low probability that a process that excludes Russia from the grain issue is sustainable,” Erdogan said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin quit the deal in July, only a year after the deal was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey. At the time, Putin, 70, said Russia’s food and fertilizer exports faced obstacles and that not enough Ukrainian exports were going to developing countries in need.
The Black Sea grain initiative allowed Ukraine, too, to safely export life-saving grain supplies through the Black Sea passage amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Last week, Putin claimed Russia would re-enter the initiative as long as all agreements relevant to the accord are fulfilled.
